The Discerner

Editor’s Letter Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to all our readers who have kindly participated in The Discerner’s Art Competition that took place in September, and congratulate the winner Svein Koningen. Thank you for your votes, as it meant a lot to the artists. I would like to highlight two events: 1. I am pleased to inform you that a fantastic selection of Bob Barrons’s work is currently available for private view at The Discerner’s office in Mayfair. Bob’s work is truly unique and incredible as he uses waste cards that he collects from local outlets. It is material that has been discarded, maybe torn, walked upon and thrown out as refuse. He likes the idea of recycling this used, unwanted, humble material and turning it into art. (See page 7 for Bob’s works) I invite you to visit Bob’s website in the meantime to view his astonishing collection: http://www.bob-barron.com All works are for sale, and I cordially invite you to come and see them in person. Please email me directly at celine@thediscerner.com if you wish to arrange a viewing. 2. The wonderful Emily Carew Woodard is showing her stunning work between the 22nd and the 26th of November, at 8 Duke Street, St James’s, London SW1Y 6BN, and I will obviously attend the preview on Monday 21st November! She has called her exhibition “The Many Complaints of Elephants” so if you are as intrigued as I originally was, please see the details page 8.

Christopher Engel Christopher Engel is an American artist who lives and works on the East End of Long Island, New York – a place that has inspired many artists such as Pollock, Krasner and de Kooning. Engel’s faces, figures and abstracts invite the viewer to enter their subconscious, allowing images to reveal themselves to their conscious mind. Continuing to embrace his Jungian philosophy, Engel incorporates archetypal images of the collective unconscious via the use of mythical, mystical and dreamlike images in his figures and faces. His abstract paintings trace ancient patterns, allowing the viewer to journey through a door to our primordial beginnings, where alchemy plays a role in the metamorphosis of random shapes into powerful symbols. Engel opens a door to the past, reminding us of our present condition and perhaps our future transformation.

EMILY CAREW WOODARD

Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I am intrigued by the title of your up-coming exhibition “The Many Complaints of Elephants”. Could you tell me more about it?” Emily Carew Woodard: “I originally wanted a theme for the show, but as is the way of my work I tend to go off on a tangent and other, better works come out of a theme that actually have nothing to do with my original idea. I wanted to create a body of work that stimulated peoples imaginations, I want my audience to make up stories about the subjects in my work themselves. The story behind the title is as thus; I visited India a few years ago and was completely captivated by its colour, history and energy, whilst I was there I saw a sign that said something along the lines of ‘Elephant complaints this way →’ and it tickled me to think of a waiting room full of disgruntled elephants waiting to complain about something or other. Elephants and the colour and vibrancy of India are subtly present throughout my show.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “You have termed your work a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ or an ‘anthology of all things incongruous’. What inspires you, and what made you decide to take such a direction?” Emily Carew Woodard: “I am hugely inspired by Walter Potter, he was a taxidermist (and not a particularly professional one at that) from the Victorian period. His works are now very famous and he’s remembered for his extraordinary dioramas including ‘The Kitten Wedding’ and ‘Who killed Cock Robin’ which is made up of 98 species of birds to illustrate the story. I first saw his entire collection in the late 80’s when I was very little, at The Jamaica Inn, in Cornwall, I remember his 8 legged kitten and his drunk rats playing poker, I have been influenced by his work ever since. I want to create my own dioramas on paper, I enjoy the juxtaposition between the animals and plunging them into a human world. All in all I like the humorous and the bizarre to merge together.” ‘THE KASHMIR MUSK DEER’ 76.2x55.9cm INK, WATERCOLOUR, ACRYLIC, GOUACHE, GOLD, SILVER AND COPPER LEAF ON PAPER. £2,750

Thomas Strümpel The Discerner

An interview with The Discerner Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

When did you become an artist?

Thomas Strümpel:

You are born as an artist and so did I. There will come a moment to realise that and show the courage and passion to follow your destination. It’s hard to answer that - you do a piece of art, when is the moment “art” begins. You do the canvas and the ground and prepare your tools - is that already art ? From what moment on you call it art ?

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

What inspires you?

Thomas Strümpel:

I don’t have a method for inspiration. Inspiration comes, when I don’t focus on inspiration. Never try to force inspiration. For me, my work is a turning wheel , like a “perpetuum mobile”. One painting creates at minimum ideas for another artwork. So, as soon you finished with one work, you start the next one. So the muse is not kissing you, but sitting in your studio, waiting for you to come in.

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

Who are your favourite artists and why ?

Thomas Strümpel:

Do I have favourite artists ‚ I don’t know - I definitely have some artworks I love. For sure I always loved Titian, because he is truly a pioneer of painting. He painted himself out of his time and his epoch. He crossed borders in his late works and set the colour free in his late life time. Another favorite is Velazquez. He almost only painted, when he thought he would create a new aspect of painting. He had the task to portrait the noble man and aristocrats but since he was getting older, he portrayed the clowns and beggars in the palace. This is a subtle political statement. I always am impressed by the works of Joseph Beuys. I had the chance to see some of his original installations and that left a deep impression, full of intensity. I love his approach to art by working with the idea of alchemy and referring to European early culture. and Sean Scully !!!! I saw an exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Bern. Gorgeous painting yes and so on and on. There are so many, brilliant artists, that’s why I have a new favourite artist almost everyday !

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

Why are you so passionate about painting ?

Thomas Strümpel:

Painting offers always new paths to go and every painting you make at a certain time offers different ways to go on and finish with this painting. So you start the next one to explore these new dimensions . When you do some painting you work with your hands, with your intellect, with your soul, with your spirit, with your fantasy. What more can one expect? You need at last one passion in your life!

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

What are your favorite paintings you have made, and why ?

Thomas Strümpel:

Right now and to be honest for quite a time “Playground” is my favourite painting. I wanted to do more versions of that , because I know they all will turn out differently. I don’t want to copy myself, but that work offers so many aspects and dimensions and directions, it always is on my mind to paint another “Playground”. Same size, smaller , bigger, different materials. It represents in a way the existence of an artist. Step in some playground like a child and start to play - through imagination this playground can mean the whole world to you.

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

What advise can you give to beginning artists?

Thomas Strümpel:

Once an Englishman said, and I am sorry that I forgot his name, “We were born as individuals and we die as copies”. Don’t try to copy another artist (only for reasons of learning) be yourself and learn to be disciplined.

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

What are you working on now, and what are your plans for the future ?

Thomas Strümpel:

I have two topics I work on : utopia and mythology and I will work on that subjects. Maybe start with a picture about Rudi Dutschke, a famous political figure in the late sixties and early seventies and there are some paintings waiting in my studio. They require some attention. Yes and do more painting, do more drawings again, develop myself, read some good books, meet interesting people and enjoy life! © 2016 The Discerner Ltd. All rights reserved.
