Editor’s Letter Dear Readers, I hope that you have enjoyed the Summer. I have myself travelled to Dubai for a few weeks, where I spent numerous hours thinking about new methods to help emerging contemporary artists develop their career, and obtain the recognition that they deserve. As you can see in page 9, the innovation of this month of September, is a competition for our brilliant artists, in which each reader of The Discerner becomes a member of a jury. You do not need to have any special knowledge in the Arts to participate, and you can simply vote for your favourite artist based on your appreciation of the work presented. Vote for your favourite artist among the extraordinary individuals shown in our September issue, and email me at celine@thediscerner.com before the 1st of October with the name of the artist of your choice. I am pleased to let you know that the winner of this fantastic competition will be making the cover of our October issue.

Christopher Engel Christopher Engel is an American artist who lives and works on the East End of Long Island, New York – a place that has inspired many artists such as Pollock, Krasner and de Kooning. Engel’s faces, figures and abstracts invite the viewer to enter their subconscious, allowing images to reveal themselves to their conscious mind. Continuing to embrace his Jungian philosophy, Engel incorporates archetypal images of the collective unconscious via the use of mythical, mystical and dreamlike images in his figures and faces. His abstract paintings trace ancient patterns, allowing the viewer to journey through a door to our primordial beginnings, where alchemy plays a role in the metamorphosis of random shapes into powerful symbols. Engel opens a door to the past, reminding us of our present condition and perhaps our future transformation.

Featured in Vogue and having worked with the National Trust, what excites me is visiting a home, boat, village or view and letting myself be inspired by the visual story of the architecture and exploring my response to it. My dreamlike painting style strips away the expected norms to expose the “Through The Looking Glass” soft playful underbelly of life.

In my work I combine painting, collage and decollage (cutting or sanding away the built up surface to reveal layers below). I free associate cut up text and images to create a self contained scenario with its own reality. I’m a big fan of haiku and the gentle playfulness that helps us view everyday life with fresh eyes.

Stephen Schubert ave you ever sat around a table of great, simple food and wine H and felt transported? Or gotten lost in a soft focus dream? This is what Stephen likes to explore in his work; finding out where we find ourselves. His process is mostly unconscious.
Captivated by themes of transitions and transformations, his abstracts are created on elevated birch panels and canvases with a technique that includes placing up to 15 layers of paint, often finished with a resin topcoat which creates tremendous depth and vibrance.
