Columbus and Lowndes County boast more than 60 industries, and its economic development arm continues to recruit more. The area currently has the potential to add thousands of jobs from prospective companies. In 2010, more than $226 million was invested in Lowndes County from new industry locating in the area existing industry expanding. The projects created more than 400 jobs. This year, The ColumbusLowndes Development Link is pursuing nine projects totaling 3,435 jobs and $2 billion worth of investment. Current prospects include companies in the businesses of sustainable energy, steel and aerospace, said Brenda Lathan vice president for economic development of the Columbus-

Lowndes Development Link. “Industry in Lowndes County is doing really well, Lathan said, noting the Link focuses part of its efforts on supporting existing industry. Through company visits, Link staff determines the needs of local industries and works with Congress and others to meet those needs and also make companies aware of any incentives available to them through new legislation. Current industries employ as few as five people (Datco textile and tack cloth manufacturer) and as many as 560 (Severstal steel mill). The 7,000 acres of land in the Golden Triangle Regional Aerospace Park is drawing more interest from prospective industry and is gaining international attention. “We’ve had five to six countries looking at the park (online) — India, Germany, Lathan said.

“One thing about the industrial park is all of our sites, with the exception of just a few, are shovelready sites, she continued. “And we control ever ything, either through ownership or option (to buy). Those sites not “shovel ready can be prepared within a matter of months. Industries at the industrial park include Severstal and partners Mississippi Steel Processing and New Process Steel, Eurocopter, manufacturer of helicopters, Stark Aviation and Aurora Flight Sciences, which both produce unmanned aerial vehicles, and Paccar engine plant. Paccar started its operations in the Center for Manufacturing Technology Excellence at East Mississippi Community College–Mayhew. It began operations at its 440,000-square-foot plant in December 2010. Since then, more than 2,000 engines have been assembled at the plant,
