A Bounce Borrowed
4th February to 25th March January to May 2017
Felicity Clear Richard Forrest Helen Hughes John O‘Kane Jane Rainey
This exhibition A Bounce Borrowed brings together five artists. It looks at the special energy that happens within a group show. The artists bring distinct approaches to making work and are at varying stages of their artistic development. The exhibition also offers a lens for a number of other considerations, for example what structures and approaches to making artwork influence the artists and how might this play out in their artistic language? The title A Bounce Borrowed references friendships, exchange and how exhibition making may influence how artworks speaks to audiences. The works are playful in their use of materials and ideas and are engaging in how materials are repurposed, represented and in the stories and perspective taken.

Ailbhe Ní Bhriain Saturday 8th April to Saturday 27th May
January to May 2017
This exhibition brings together a number of recent works by Irish artist Ailbhe Ní Bhriain for the first time. Ní Bhriain works with film, computer generated imagery and sound to create immersive multi-screen installations that play with ideas of representation and displacement. Her films depict archetypal or generic locations that have been transformed into a dreamlike theatricality. Whether a flooded library inhabited by birds of prey or a disused airport housing a rudimentary landscape, these works represent an altered reality in which our expectations of time and place come undone.

It is aimed at people of all ages, especially students, their teachers and parents. The Dock is offering those aged 8 to 14 years the chance to get involved in applying engineering principles to creative and fun arts practices. Artist Vanya Lambrecht Ward will be on hand on Saturday 4th March with a super workshop which involves no digital tricks but lots of illusion as participants are shown how to create Zoetropes and Thaumatropes. You might be asking yourself what a Zoetrope and/or Thaumatrope is exactly. Well they are devices that create the illusion of movement and, in the case of Thaumatropes, can actually make still images move! The great news is that these can be made with readily available materials such as cardboard and paper so we can take engineering principles and apply them to artistic creativity and learn more about both disciplines in the process.

He now finds himself in the bog wondering: Should snakes receive the Free Travel Pass? Are birds the souls of people that have passed on? What is that clown in number six smoking? Movies & Music Night Searching for Sugar Man & Boyle Songwriters Collective SATURDAY 11TH MARCH 8.30PM â‚Ź10 January to May 2017
Following on from a series of sell out nights Boyle Songwriters Collective are back with a night of their own music and the wonderful documentary film; Searching for Sugar Man. Searching for Sugar Man is the real and fascinating story of how a dogged music journalist tried to find out what happened to the mysterious Sixto Rodriguez, an American musician who had never achieved success in the United States, but had become very popular in South Africa where his songs of quiet strength and gentle rebellion caught on during the apartheid years. The man himself had seemingly dropped off the planet and was rumoured to have died. In a documentary that is both heartwarming and uplifting, we learn what happens to someone who discovers very late in life that he’s not the failure he had thought he was.
The Listening Club 7PM FREE Before the film why not join us for The Listening Club. If you are interested in hearing new music in a welcoming and laid back environment then this free event is for you. Artists Mark Garry and Karl Burke present this informal evening where you can bring along your own music choices to listen to and to share with others. The music choices are eclectic and always enlightening and can come in any format from vinyl to cassette tape to digital. They might be songs that someone finds interesting, progressive or just a piece of music they love. Think of it as kind of like Shazam with the added bonuses of social interaction and conversation.

FRIDAY 31ST MARCH & SATURDAY 1ST APRIL 7.30PM €16 Described as ‘a triumph’ by Declan Kiberd, these stage adaptations of two stories from John McGahern’s Getting Through collection explore how we try to cope with the conflict between desire and reality. In A Slip Up, Michael and Agnes give up their farm in rural Ireland to emigrate to London. The effects of this sundering from the land and community are powerfully revealed through the ordinary but fragile routines of married life. In All Sorts of Impossible Things, the experience of a stubborn romance and a precious friendship yield life-changing possibilities - but will they be grasped? Presented by The Dublin Shakespeare Society, the adaptations were conceived and scripted by Máire Doyle and devised for performance with George Carroll. The Dublin Shakespeare Society (or ‘The Shakes’ as it is affectionately known) was founded in 1907 and is the oldest non-professional theatre company in Ireland. The Shakes have performed virtually all of the Bard’s plays over the years and many ‘greats’ of Irish Theatre ‘trod the boards’ with the Shakes including, Milo O’Shea, Betty Ann Norton, Maire O’Neill, Brenda Fricker, Gabriel Byrne, Liam Cunningham, and many others.

Kathleen O’Leary: Video work Screening Opening 31 March – 13 April
O’Leary’s artworks are multidisciplinary in nature including Drawing, Painting, Video, Installation, Photography and Interactive Media. Altered Environments is the result of digital collaborations with artists, musicians, performers and technicians that explore how the body and its movements change the conditions of a site and alter the meaning and use of a place.
Working primarily with limestone, Cullen orchestrates a series of large-scale sculptural forms that explore the force of materials in the enactment of the ‘image’ and in releasing the power of ‘things in themselves.’ One of the ideas that unifies Cullen’s work is an interest in the underlying interconnectedness of things and the ambiguities of identity that emerge as we move between microcosmic and macrocosmic orders of scale.
O’Leary completed her Masters in ‘Art in the Contemporary World’, NCAD in 2013 and her B.F.A (Hons) Degree, Institute of Technology, Sligo in 2005. She screened ‘Second Sight | Site’ at Corina Fastnet Short International Film Festival in Schull West Cork, 2014, and curated ‘Mercurial’ for The Five Glens Arts Festival, Manorhamilton, (2015). In 2013 O’Leary screened her short film ‘Second Sight | Site’ at the Riverside Studios – The Irish Film Festival London, 2012. She launched her second solo show ‘Fifth Wheel Element Project’ at Pallas Projects, Dublin 2013.
Des Cullen is an artist currently living and working in North Leitrim. He studied sculpture at GMIT where he graduated with Honours in 1996. He completed a First Class Honours Degree in Painting in Sligo IT and more recently an MFA at Ulster University, Belfast (2014).

Altogether Now! Bealtaine 2017 Programme Theme: Altogether Now! Collectivism, civic engagement and protest! By 2030, 1 in 5 of us will be over 65. Although in our minds we will probably always remain somewhere between 21 and 37 years old, one day most of us will be part of the over 65 group with (hopefully) the fuller hearts on which Brian muses. Will we be old then? Or just older? Will we be pensioners? Will we be the “elderly”, “senior citizens” “silver surfers”? Whether growing old gracefully, or disgracefully, Age & Opportunity want to ensure that everyone has the chance to grow old creatively…. Altogether (and) Now!
