Lisa Hannigan will be touring up and down the country for the summer, with the wonderful John Smith supporting, in a slightly more grown up version of her summer holidays. “I’ve spent the last year travelling about and writing songs for my second record. During that time I met Joe Henry and from that moment I knew he was the man to help me make the record that was in my head. I found a wonderful converted farmhouse studio in the middle of Snowdonia national park in Wales and we all headed over for a week. Gavin Glass played piano and banjo, Ross Turner was on drums, Shane Fitzsimons, double and electric bass, Donagh Molloy, harmonium and trumpet and an eight and a half months pregnant Lucy Wilkins played violin and arranged a couple of songs for cello and violin. John Smith joined for some guitar and general tomfoolery. The album will be out in the autumn and I can’t wait to get out and play the songs from it.” Lisa Hannigan 4

‘Gig of The Week at Galway Arts Festival 2010’ Ari plays in a Cafe style setting After his sell-out show and being voted ‘gig of the week’ at Galway Arts Festival last year, New York singer songwriter Ari Hest plays an intimate gig at The Dock as one of a small series of headline shows in Ireland to celebrate his new album. A prolific songwriter and a captivating live performer, with a voice that recalls Springsteen and Marc Cohn, Hest will be accompanied by the brilliant percussionist from Suzanne Vega’s band, Doug Yowell and Bass player (Angus & Julia Stone) Rob Calder. Hest recently opted out of a major record deal with Colombia to have more control over his art and embarked on the ambitious 52 project, spending an entire year immersed in an unprecedented effort – to write, record, produce and release one new song per week, for 52 weeks in a row. That was followed by his self-released studio CD, Twelve Mondays, featuring reworked versions of 12 fan-selected songs, culled from the previous year’s extraordinary output. With influences such as The Beatles, The Police, Jeff Buckley and Paul Simon, expect a scintillating mix of mellow acoustic balladry with several musical twists along the way from folk, pop, rock and more. See: www.myspace.com/arihest Support by classical guitarist Edgar Grunewald from Drumshanbo, 2011 winner of ESB Feis Ceoil Senior Guitar and Bach Guitar Awards. He is currently studying classical guitar at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

BEOGA
“the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century” (Wall Street Journal)
Beoga are blazing a pioneering trail in Irish music. The County Antrim based quintet features the unique twin duelling accordians of Seán Óg Graham and Damian McKee, four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray, pianist Liam Bradley and Limerick singer and fiddler, Niamh Dunne. The bedrock of Beoga’s sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition. However, they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy traditional sound. The result is traditional, with a huge sense of fun and adventure and it all works - wonderfully well. Their 2009 album ‘The Incident’ made the shortlist for a Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category. They also feature on fiddler Kevin Burke’s new CD ‘Suite’ with Cal Scott. Their gig at The Dock will give you a chance to hear material from their brand new album ‘How to Tune a Fish’.

Tim O Brien with Mike McGoldrick & Arty McGlynn A very special meeting of musical masters!
Grammy award winning musician Tim O Brien teams up with the great Manchester flute player Mike McGoldrick and legendary guitarist Arty McGlynn for what will be a very special meeting of masters at The Dock. The uncanny intersection of traditional and contemporary elements in Tim O Brien’s songwriting, his tireless dedication to a vast and expanding array of instruments, and his ongoing commitment to place himself in as many unique and challenging musical scenarios as possible has made him a key figure in today’s thriving roots music scene – and beyond it. Mike McGoldrick is probably the hottest name in traditional Irish music today. Regarded as one of the best flute players of all time, he is constantly on the road, either with his own 9-piece band or Capercaille or in countless other combinations. A former and founding member of Lunasa and Flook, he toured with Mark Knopfler’s band in 2010 and also performs with The Transatlantic Sessions, along with Tim O Brien and many more. Arty McGlynn is a legendary name in Irish music. One of the most influential performers in the genre, he has been playing guitar for a lifetime and has produced or appeared on many of the best recordings.

PHILIP NAPIER UNPACKING THE TERROR
Exhibition opening Friday 8th July 5:30pm
Philip Napier: Unpacking The Terror is the second of an annual series in which The Dock focuses on the work of an artist based in Northern Ireland. Napier’s project explores a connection between the civil engineering of future space of the estate of Northern Ireland and the immanent opening up of the North West Passage as a major seaway in the ‘high north’ of the Arctic linking Europe to the far and near east. In our time the passage is gradually opening as a major international highway due to global warming and the shrinking of the ice sheet. The North West Passage has occupied a significant and shifting relationship in successive imaginations for both the potentials of hard edged economic advantage and an imaginative spatial zone of discovery, terror and the romantic imagination. Philip Napier is an artist and also currently the Head of Sculpture at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. Napier is a former Rome scholar and has represented Ireland in the XXII Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, and Great Britain at the inaugural Kwangju Biennale in South Korea. He has shown widely internationally developing projects and manifestations often rerouteing meaning and power sited in situations of public realm debate.

Selection UpStart
The Dock is proud to present a selection of work from the Dublin based UpStart project
UpStart, non profit arts collective, put creativity at the centre of public consciousness during the Irish general election campaign 2011. The project achieved this by reinterpreting the spaces commonly used for displaying election campaign posters in Dublin City. They invited artists from around the county to submit work in all mediums. The response was huge and brilliant. The objective of UpStart was to encourage debate on the role of the arts in this state. UpStart highlighted the importance of creativity and ingenuity in our society right now while emphasizing the value of the arts to public life. At the core of UpStart is a belief that the future development of our country requires a healthy cultivation of the arts. The work on show will bring a particular focus to pieces submitted by artists based in the North West of Ireland. For further information please call Claire 071 96 508 28 or see www.upstart.ie Friday 8th July

Leitrim Arts Office The Leitrim Equation
Leitrim County Council’s second Traditional Music Residency featuring the renowned traditional group DERVISH comes to a close in July 2011 with the Leitrim launch of a CD recorded with Leitrim musicians and members of Dervish at the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim. The concert - “Mórtas Liatroma” will take place in the Ramada Hotel on Sunday 17th July at 8.30pm. Some of the local guest musicians will include Ben Lennon, Dave Sheridan, Eleanor Shanley, Louise Devitt, Mary McPartlan, Michael O’Brien, Mossie Martin and more…
The new CD, entitled The Leitrim Equation II, emerges out of Dervish’s regular visits to the county since 2009 and consists of songs and music from Dervish along with Leitrim musicians they met and worked with. The emphasis of this recording is on the ‘voice’ of Leitrim as explored through familiar Leitrim songs such as ‘Lovely Leitrim’, ‘Shores of Lough Bran’, and ‘My County Leitrim Queen’ given a Dervish twist. The emphasis on the Leitrim songs was Cathy Jordan’s desire to meet Leitrim singers such as Fionnuala Maxwell, Eleanor Shanley, Mary McParlan, Eamonn Daly, Tom Mulvey and Rosie Stewart and to identify songs native to Leitrim and bring them to a new audience. For more information on the Leitrim County Council traditional music residency, contact Leitrim County Council Arts Office on 071 962 1694 or see www.leitrimcoco.ie/Departments/Arts/Projects/Music/

The Moth presents The Pitch by Shane Connaughton
Directed by Kerry Crabbe. Starring Shane Connaughton, Fiona Fitzpatrick and Niall Lynch. Philly lived and played for his team, the jersey, the parish, his friends − the very pitch his enemies are now trying to take from him to turn into a housing estate. Like Philoctetes abandoned by his comrades as they go off to fight the Trojan War, Philly is tormented by painful memories and the unjust fate that holds him prisoner as he replays the events of that day when his club won the county championship for the one and only time and he wasn’t allowed to play. Accused of fathering an illegitimate child, and now threatened with retirement to a nursing home, he holds tight to the memory of the Herculean feats of his youth – and to the land on which these dramas unfolded. For him, the old pitch is sacred ground, and it is here that he will make his last stand.

SEAN TYRRELL, KEVIN GLACKIN & RONAN BROWNE
Three of the most highly respected musicians within the Irish traditional/ folk scene play the Glens as part of a national tour to promote their new album And So The Story Goes. Sean Tyrrell, renowned for his unique singer/ songwriter talents, legendary fiddle player Kevin Glackin and creative uilleann piper Ronan Browne will fuse their talents on stage, for what promises to be an inspiring night of music. Commenting on the forthcoming tour, Sean Tyrrell said, “Although the three of us are old hands in the business, we are very much looking forward to this tour. We respect one anothers’ talents and know that, as always, we will each benefit from this collaboration. We are also confident that our audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy an honest performance.” Seán, Kevin and Ronan have been playing together socially and for tours and shows since the 1980s but are only now (after major hounding by their fans) releasing a CD of songs and tunes. The CD is nicely balanced between gentle and wild, without suffering from that dreadful modern ailment, over-production – just warm, friendly music and singing. 8.30pm Adm: €15/12. The TENNESSEE MAFIA JUG BAND
From the pastoral hills, hollers, shopping malls and interstate highways of Goodlettsville Tennessee, home of Bill Monroe, Bashful Brother Oswald, Stringbean, Grandpa Jones, Keith Whitley and some living country music performers, comes the most entertaining “blast from the past” since Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys. They’re the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band - five guys and a scrubboard, with roots like wisdom teeth. The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band have shamelessly stolen a feature of the old Roy Acuff Show - a bit known as “Pap & the Jug Band”. There’s only so many graveyard numbers or raunchy love songs that even the most rabid country audience can sit through without some kind of relief. This frolicking fivesome brightens up the stage with rib-tickling old time tunes. Even better, they have an utter lack of self-consciousness (and some might say any sense of decorum). Hot picking, powerful harmony singing and riotous hijinks that will perk you up between the “hot young country” acts — that’s the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, and thank God for them. 8.30pm Adm: €16

MARTIN HAYES & DENNIS CAHILL

Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship, ranking them among the most memorable partnerships of our era. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances. The New York Times calls them “a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’ ‘Sketches of Spain.” Undoubtedly the greatest Irish fiddler of his generation, Martin Hayes has been an All-Ireland fiddle champion six times over; he was awarded the prestigious 2008 Musician of the Year award from Ireland’s Irish language television TG4, and recently led a group of fellow musicians to sold out performances at the Sydney Opera House in his role as artistic director of The Masters of Tradition. Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, whose innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. 8.30pm Adm: €18

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth a5 billion a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2009 is a75 million, that’s about a1 euro a week for every household. So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter with the arts, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
