Katie Munda and Jennifer Pape
Greetings, readers! I am so excited to be part of the Dog Dish family! My husband Matt and I are both lifelong Okies and proud parents to two fur kids, whom our world revolves around. Molly, our sassy, spunky, sweet Chihuahua, is 11 years young and is truly the light of our lives. She is queen of our castle and loves to boss her brother, Bosworth, around. Bosworth is our three-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier; he is a therapy dog and our pride and joy. In fact, Bosworth was featured in The Dog Dish last year for his work as a therapy dog! This opportunity was truly an answered prayer. After leaving the job I loved as a kindergarten teacher in search of a new adventure and a change of scenery, I had become a bit discouraged in my search. One morning a few months ago, I prayed that God would show me an opportunity to use my passion for His glory. The very next morning, I received a message asking if I might be interested in taking over The Dog Dish Magazine, and the rest is history! I am so grateful to God for the opportunity to be part of the amazing OKC dog community as the publisher of The Dog Dish. It is my mission to be an advocate for dogs and their humans, and to promote living a dog-friendly life in our beautiful city. I am so honored that Jennifer would trust me with this amazing publication that she has built and loves so much. I look forward to the exciting adventure ahead and to getting to know you and your fur babies! Katie Munda 4 • The Dog Dish Magazine

Safety Tips for Integrating Kids and Dogs
According to the American Veterinary Medicine Association, at least half of the 800,000 Americans who seek medical treatment for dog bites each year are children. Educating dog parents and their children on appropriate interaction with dogs and the correct ways to approach a dog, along with how to identify the signs or fear or anxiety in dogs, are the best ways to prevent dog bites. Our dogs are our most treasured companions, and we share a special bond with them. It’s important to “speak their language” and learn the ways in which our pups are communicating their feelings to us so that we can safely and happily share our lives with our best fur friends. 10 • The Dog Dish Magazine
What do kids need to know about approaching dogs? ■ Avoid approaching or attempting to touch or play with dogs who are eating, sleeping, or chewing on a toy or bone. ■ Never approach a dog who is barking, growling, or seems fearful. ■ Always ask permission before approaching a stranger’s dog. Then, let the dog sniff your closed hand. Begin by petting the dog’s shoulders or chest, taking care to avoid the head.

BONNIE & CHLOE BENTLEY Bentley was special from the moment we met. He was running down a highway with a little friend so I turned around to get them off the road and when I got back to the car he was in my seat so I took him home. He was one of those once-ina-lifetime dogs that truly knew people’s souls. He would look you in the eye and then move his head side-to-side until he was satisfied you were OK. He started having seizures at 12 months old. I tried everything known to man and two years ago on April 19, after 19 seizures, I knew it was time to let him go. It was them that I learned there was nothing I could have done for my baby boy…I will always love him with all of my heart. Rhonda BARRY SWITZER He was the smartest, sweetest, most athletic guy around. He loved Wilson, his tennis ball, more than anything in the world and carried it everywhere with him. His time with us was way too short and he is very missed. We’ll meet you at the bridge, Switzer! Matt 12 • The Dog Dish Magazine
HANNAH HANNAH My Hannah! She was a rescue and our only child. We were blessed with 11 years of love. We lost her 2 1/2 years ago. I cannot express how many ways she was so special to us. It would go on for pages. She was such a gentle soul and will be forever in our hearts. Ginger PEPPER Ornery as the day is long, but what can you say, my baby! We lost her in 2016, at the age of 9 to leukemia. Broke our hearts! We will always love her, and always miss her! Robyn BUG BURWELL The best rescue dog there ever was. She loved her home, her car rides, and she really loved going to visit the staff at Gentle Care Animal Hospital. We sure loved her, but goodness she loved us so much more. There will never be another personality as big, fun, determined, and happy as her. She was truly one in a million. We were lucky to have her for her golden years. Danelle
CRICKET BONNIE & CHLOE They were, and always will be, my first babies. My husband got them for me to keep me company when he first joined the police force. They were my protectors. We lost Bonnie in 2015 and just lost Chloe last month. It is still so hard not having them around. Miss them so much. Lacy CHEYANNE My beautiful Cheyanne! My first Dalmatian, she was a social butterfly! Never met a stranger! We lost her in 2009 at the age of 14. She had hip dysplasia. We loved her so much, and miss her every day! Robyn CRICKET My tiny little soulmate. I lost her in 2012 and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. She was sassy, sweet, special, and so cuddly. She made me smile daily. She was a celebrity everywhere she went. I know we’ll be reunited one day and in the meantime I have so many special memories that I cherish every day. Jennifer

Gail SUMMER BREEZE Beautiful girl, and just as sweet as Cheyanne! We lost her in 2012 at the age of 16 1/2! We loved her just as much, and miss her every day too! Robyn OSCAR This is Oscar. LOLA MAY HESTIA Hestia was a rescue baby who was left behind in horrendous conditions for several months to fend for herself. She was 12 years old when we rescued her and she lived to be 13. Despite all she had been through, she was such an amazingly loving, sweet, patient old lady and such a fighter right up to the end. Severe muscle degeneration and arthritis got the best of her. I’ll forever miss her beautiful face. We love you, Hestia. Marie SNUFFY Our precious Snuffy. He was our best buddy for over 15 years. Car rides to the donut shop with his head out the window were his favorite; he loved his donut holes! He was the most faithful friend you could have asked for and we loved him more than life. He is missed every day. We will meet you at the bridge, sweet buddy! Robin RUBY Lost our girl, Ruby, almost a year ago. She loved everyone she met and was hilarious! Grace
SARGENT PEPPER LOLA MAY My Lola May. My first boxer. She was my heart and soul dog. She only lived to be 7 years old. She was funny, lovable, goofy, destructible, won every Halloween costume contest we put her in, loved car rides and so high maintenance. We loved her dearly. We still miss her to this day. She would be 12 years old September 20. Janet SAM My Sam. I found him at an old gas station in Jan 2009. He passed away March 2014. He was truly my buddy. Kathy SARGENT PEPPER Sargent Pepper was abandoned by my sister’s house. I remember going to meet her for the first time. I sat down on the stairs and just opened my arms. She walked right to me and never left my side. I will never forget the unwavering love in her eyes whenever she looked at me. Marcia May/June 2017 • 13

WEST
14 • The Dog Dish Magazine
Let’s start with what’s most important. What does WEST offer for our four-legged friends? The staff was immediately inviting and welcoming of the fact that we had dogs with us to dine. Upon seating our dogs were instantly brought a bowl of fresh water to enjoy (important on those hot Oklahoma days!). While WEST does not offer a dog menu, our server did suggest a grilled chicken breast or hamburger patty as dog-friendly fare. For the human food, the portions were large and tasty. They do have some healthier options on the menu such as kale salad and chicken avocado
sandwich. WEST is a beautiful place to enjoy lunch, brunch (the mimosas and bloody mary’s are also delicious), or an evening cocktail. The patio is casual, but elegant, and offers plenty of comfortable seating. It’s the ideal location to relax and spend a few hours with your best friends. The best news, and perhaps what sparked us to review WEST in the first place, is the fact that if you dine on the patio with your pup, 15% of your ticket total will be donated to Central Oklahoma Humane Society. Thanks for your generosity, WEST, and we appreciate you helping homeless dogs in our community! WEST is located at 6714 N Western Ave, in the heart of the Nichols Hills area. They are open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We look forward to visiting again soon for what WEST is best known for…their delicious brunch! Dog Days are Here Again Dog-friendly Summer Activities near the OKC Metro Written by Kelsey Warren-Bryant
It’s that time of year again! Several summer adventures await you and your pup near Oklahoma City. We found a few summer activities you can enjoy with your best pal. As you explore our great city, you’re sure to find many more activities to add to your “to-do” list. 16 • The Dog Dish Magazine
Doggie Paddle The Boathouse District lists kayaking as one of its dog-friendly activities, so rent a kayak and enjoy the summer breeze with your pup by your side. Just don’t forget to get her a life jacket, because even furry friends are required to wear one.
Patio Party Oklahoma City boasts several dog-friendly patios throughout the metro area. Try Rock and Brews in Edmond for a rocker’s paradise, or the Picasso Café for a more artsy venue and custom dog dishes. You can also swing by Fuzzy’s Taco Shop for a fun, casual atmosphere. Wherever you decide, just let the staff know you’ve brought your dog, and they’ll direct you to their patio. Your well-behaved bestie will probably love some extra attention from the staff.
Trailblazer Explore the outdoors by hitting one of Oklahoma’s many trails. Whether you want to stick closer to the city by Lake Hefner or are willing to road trip to the Wichita Mountains, enjoy the ultimate adventure outdoors with your canine adventurer. Be sure to pack lots of fresh water for your hike.
Tee Off When you spend your weekend at the golf course, why call a dog sitter? Furry friends are welcome at Top Golf in the OKC metro. You can even take your dog on the course with you, as long as he stays behind the teeing area.
Cool Treats It’s not entirely fair that humans get to enjoy ice cream and dogs can’t, so places across the city have embraced the tasty trend of dog-friendly ice cream. Swing by All Fur Paws, A-1 Pet Emporium, or
the Barking Dog Bakery to treat your pup to a frozen summer treat. These vendors also offer other types of doggie snacks, so stock up on your dog treats to make it worth the trip. Want to try making your own dog-friendly ice cream instead? Visit page 30 of this issue for some tasty recipes.
Wine Down If you enjoy the finer things in life, why not enjoy them with someone you love? Visit one of the metro’s dog-friendly wineries. Lots of the wineries allow pups to walk the fields, and will even provide a bowl of water for them. Just keep the wine tasting to the humans.
Stylish Staycation There are plenty of dog-friendly hotels near the metro, and some even have water stations for dogs. Treat your pup to a night of luxury in a dog-friendly hotel. After all, isn’t summer the best time to relax? Just a few hotels offering dog-friendly policies are the Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites by Hilton, and the Skirvin Hotel. May/June 2017 • 17

Wedding Bells and Puppy Dog Tails Ways to honor your dog at your wedding Written by Kelsey Warren-Bryant
It’s your big day. Family and friends are traveling from all over just to come celebrate your wedding day, and yet one of your closest family members may not be able to attend. Though opportunities exist for dogs to participate in weddings (like outdoor weddings and dog-friendly indoor venues), it may not be a possibility for you to have your dog at your ceremony. Maybe your pup gets anxious in busy environments, or you have a family member who is allergic to dogs. Maybe he’s crossed the rainbow bridge, and you’re taking time to mourn his loss before bringing in a new family member. If your special family member can’t attend on your big day, consider one or more of the following ways to honor him during the ceremony.
Prepare a toast
When you make a toast to welcome your guests, find a way to mention your dog. Tell a funny story that includes your fiancé, or say how excited your fiancé is to become a dog parent. This is an understated way to include your dog in the celebration even if he’s not present. 24 • The Dog Dish Magazine

Register for dog supplies
Do you ever think about things you want to get your dog? A new collar or a dog bed that will hold its shape could be included in your gift registry. This not only ensures that your dog is included on your special day, but she gets a nice gift out of it too.
Decorate with framed photos
Are you including framed photos of you and your fiancé on the guest book table? Consider including one of you and your dog as well. This will honor your dog while making your guests smile.
Put pretty dog tags in your centerpieces
For a subtle way to honor your pup at your wedding, hang a dog tag on each centerpiece. For an extra special touch, engrave the tags with your names or initials. Your guests that are dog lovers will appreciate the unique detail. May/June 2017 • 25
An Ounce of Prevention Veterinarian Tips on Flea & Tick Products Fleas and ticks are external parasites that can cause a lot of discomfort and even serious illness in dogs and their people. To prevent these pesky critters from taking a bite out of your fur kids, consider treating your home and lawn with a preventative product and keep them out of areas where fleas and ticks tend to hang around. For example, heavily wooded areas or tall grass can attract fleas and ticks. Ticks are attracted to moist areas, so be sure to remove any wet leaves, grass, or standing water around your home. Check your pooch over thoroughly each day, especially during flea and tick season and if they have access to heavily wooded or grassy areas. Flea or tick control products meant for dogs should never be used on cats and vice versa. Written by Zac Coldiron, DVM, Stoneridge Animal Hospital
Spring is in the air, and change is the buzz word of the season. Flowers are blooming, grass is growing, the weather is warming up, allergies are once again starting to really be a bother, and summertime is fast approaching. Once again, we will be able to enjoy the outdoors. Once again, our dogs will be bothered by the pesky fleas and ticks that seem to emerge at this same time every year. There’s no denying it; these parasites are a real pest for dogs. Not only do they make dogs uncomfortable as they crawl around and feed, they carry diseases that can be detrimental to dogs’ overall health. 26 • The Dog Dish Magazine
Show us a picture of your fur baby and get $50 off Botox! Your consultation is FREE!
Flea allergy dermatitis, anemia, tick borne diseases, and more can be attributed to the presence of parasites on a dog. It is important for dog parents to utilize a reputable flea and tick prevention products. As the old adage states, “It is far easier and way cheaper to prevent a problem than it is to treat a problem once it occurs.” Many topical products and oral products on the market make killing fleas and ticks their ultimate goal. These products are usually administered on a monthly basis; however, many of the new products last several months or longer. Regardless of whether you chose a topical product or an oral product, it is important to remember that no product works if you forget to administer it properly. That’s why it’s so important to follow any and all written instructions that come with a particular product. It’s also important to remember that not all products are equal in their efficacy. Most products that can be bought over the counter either don’t work very well or don’t last very long, despite the claims on TV or product packages. It is always best to speak with your veterinarian before starting your dog on any new supplements or medications. While veterinarian-supplied products tend to be more costly, they work way better than pet store products. In this regard, another adage comes to mind: “You get what you pay for.” Failure to protect your dog could be costly and even deadly, so make sure you do this early on in the season and be diligent throughout the season, which usually lasts until October or November in Oklahoma.

Summer Doggie Ice Cream Recipes In honor of National Ice Cream Day coming up soon (July 16), here are a few dogfriendly ice cream recipes to try at home.
Banana Split Sundae
Mango-licious
■■ 2 frozen bananas, sliced
■■ ½ cup of pineapple (fresh or frozen)
■■ 2 cups frozen strawberries
■■ 1 tbs oats
■■ ½ cup of mango (fresh or frozen)
■■ 1 cup Greek Yogurt*
■■ 2 tbs melted peanut butter
■■ 2 spoonfuls unsweetened apple sauce
■■ 4 tbs peanut butter
■■ 1/4 cup of water
■■ 1 tsp honey
■■ 1 strawberry, top cut off Frozen bananas replaces the traditional ice cream in this healthy, dog-friendly version of your favorite banana split sundae. Oats replace the use of peanuts, and melted peanut butter became that delicious hot fudge topping. Finally, a strawberry topped the sundae in place of the cherry. If you find the recipe is too thick, add a few ounces of water. Directions: 1. Peel bananas, then chop into medium-thin slices. Place in freezer bag or air-tight container, and freeze for at least two hours. 2. Once the bananas are frozen, take them out of the freezer and get out a blender or food processer. Blend or pulse until the bananas start to look creamy. For thicker ice cream, leave some banana chunks intact. 3. Mash or stir banana ice cream as desired. 4. Spoon peanut butter into a small bowl or serving dish. Microwave on high for at least thirty seconds, until peanut butter is melted. 5. While peanut butter is being microwaved, get out your oats. Sprinkle them on top of the banana ice cream, as desired. 6. Pour melted peanut butter over ice cream like you would with hot fudge. 7. Finally, top with a strawberry with the green leaves cut off, placing upside-down. 30 • The Dog Dish Magazine
■■ 2 tbs ground flax seed Tongues and tails will be wagging over this delicious tropical treat! The fruits provide great sources of vitamins A, C and E, while the addition of flax seeds in this recipe provide essential fatty acids that are good for skin and coat health. Keep the leftover flax seeds in an airtight container in the fridge to keep it fresh. Directions: 1. Blend pineapple, mango, apple sauce and water in your blender or food processor. 2. Add in flax seeds and blend until creamy and smooth. 3. Add additional water in small increments if recipe is too thick. 4. Freeze mixture overnight (or a minimum of 4 hours), serve and enjoy!
PB & J
■■ 2 tbs oats What dog doesn’t come running when he smells peanut butter? This recipe is full of peanut buttery goodness and is the perfect frozen treat for a summer day. This recipe may be simple, but it is sure to be a hit. Directions: 1. Combine frozen strawberries, Greek yogurt or bananas if substituting 2. Blend or pulse until the ingredients are creamy. 3. Add in the peanut butter, oats and honey. Blend again until all ingredients are combined. 4. Freeze mixture overnight (or a minimum of 4 hours), serve and enjoy! *To make this recipe vegan, or for dogs extra sensitive to lactose, substitute frozen bananas for the Greek yogurt.
