Blue lolly, orange lolly A new Ford Ranger leaves the testing ground at Silverton in Pretoria every two minutes, 24/7, and these bakkies are then exported to 145 countries — but nowhere else do they sell as well as in South Africa. ‘SA is the biggest market for the Ranger,’ confirmed Dale Reid, boss of light commercial vehicles at Ford South Africa. The plant now builds 33 models of the Ranger, but Reid said he will only announce prices ‘in a few weeks’. (Pundits predict a four to six percent increase.) Meanwhile, it is a buyers’ market on the current Ranger models, with fantastic offerings at all dealers, and Motoring can recommend especially the 2,2 engined 4x2 range, which will remain good value for a long time, as well as the Wildtrack, (right). In the new 4x4 models, Reid’s team has added a raft of driver assist sytems that not only add value to the new Ranger, but also put it on par with a Land Rover Discovery off road. Build at the new Daimler Trucks and Bus factory in Chennai, India, where it is sold as Bharat Benz, the neat lorry was billed as comfortable for drivers and the fleet managers’ budget alike. My quick drive around the grounds of the controversial new Steyn City, built by Auto & General billionaire Douw Stein between Riversands and Diepsloot, showed up no faults that could dispel these praises. At a glittering launch event for dealers on Thursday night, executive director for Daimler Trucks and Bus es Kobus van Zyl said in the midst of a current downturn in sales, Steyn’s huge investment showed confidence in South Africa’s future, as indeed did Daimler with the launch of a new me dium commercial truck. Naeem Hassim, head of Fuso SA, said the new FA9137 will set the pace for more “built in India” products in the future. and has already proven itself on the tough roads of India, where it carries almost double the fiveton payload the FA9 is licensed for in South Africa. Sold only in 4x2 freight carrier con figuration, the sixspeed transmis sion comes with the power transfer that can also drive a light tipper in construction applications. Most sell ers in the transport trade expect a flat
yearend and a drop in sales next year, but Hassim points out everything is cyclical, and he is confident the econ omy will turn again. “When industries grow, the need for transport grows in turn. We are excited to know that this rugged truck will be fuelling economies in south ern Africa as we showcase the various applications it fulfils,” said Hassim.
