Out with the old New Hilux due in March is making for big discounts on outgoing model ALWYN VILJOEN APRIL was one of few months in which the Toyota Hilux was not South Africa’s top selling bakkie, with 2 105 units sold locally, com pared to Ford Ranger’s 3 095. Dealers expect this dip in Hilux sales to continue as buyers prefer to wait the eighthgeneration Hilux, which was officially unveiled in Bang kok on Thursday, but will only arrive in South Africa sometime in March next year. Meanwhile, dealers are doing ev erything in their power to make the deal on the current Hilux even sweet er. McCarthy Toyota in Pietermaritz burg, for example, is offering a R50 000 discount on the outgoing model, making the current model Hi lux very good value while the brand’s ability to retain value will ensure high resale values even after the next gen eration’s arrival. The new Hilux looks slightly big ger and rides on newly developed frame and suspension, but those waiting for the next iteration of the legend bakkie are more interested in the new drivetrains — with a 2,4 and a 2,8 turbo diesel mated to a new six speed automatic transmission. In a world first for bakkies, the au toboxes feature Intelligent Manual Transmissionm or iMT, to match the revs for smooth shifts that also save diesel and ensure perfect power delivery over the rough stuff. For those control freaks who still want to change their bakkie’s gears

Smart Forgigs make 150dB The next Hilux is only due in SA by March, but is meanwhile sparking big discounts on the outgoing model. For those who are willing to wait, the next Hilux brings a large touchscreen and an intelligent autobox. PHOTOS: QUICKPIC manually, we can only say you have to try it. Readers react to planned changes to road rules THE South African National Trans port Department has publicised draft regulations intended to curb road carnage in South Africa — and Wheels24 readers are really not hap py. The proposals include slower speed limits, no more children in a bakkie load bed, restricting heavy trucks during rush hours and what strikes one as the most draconic: a practical driving test when renewing a driving licence. The department plans to implement the regulations by year end. These are the main changes: • Driver evaluation before renewing a licence. • No more than five adults in a bakkie load bed.

Transport want to change this picture with wellintended regulations. PHOTO: FILE • No children to be carried in a bakkie load bed. • Speed limits cut — 60 to 40 km/h in towns, 100 to 80 km/h on rural roads, 120 to 100 km/h on city free

ways. • Goods vehicles heavier than 9000 kg GVM banned from roads during peak traffic hours. One of the proposed regulations

will compel drivers to take a practical test, the details of which have yet to be published, when renewing a li cence. We asked readers what affect the practical test would have and a News24 poll garnered 21 056 votes. By far, most readers (11 146) called for the state to work on enforcing ex isting laws rather than implementing new ones, while 8 121 said the wellin tented regulations would only cause more corruption and frustrate driv ers. Only 996 felt a practical test would expose fraudulent drivers and even fewer (793) believed the propos al would make SA’s roads safer. Almost a 1 000 (996) voted to ex pose fraudulent drivers, while 793 voted for safer roads. — Wheels24.

THE smallest car in the Daimler stable now boasts 150 decibels after JBL packed out a tiny Fortwo with 5 720Watt speakers to turn it onto a Forgig. JBL said in a company statement that the Forgig can be used as a “concert hall on wheels” or as a mobile amplifier for street musicians. The sound system comprises five amplifiers, 16 loudspeakers and two 30cm diameter subwoofers. Three JBL GTO 804 EZ amps serve the tweeters and mid range speakers, with the midrange speakers inte grated into the doors and the into the dashboard. There is also a pair of midrange speakers/tweet ers either side of the tailgate. Two JBL GTO 751 EZ amps, meanwhile, power the subwoofers, which are fitted in the luggage compartment. A Mosconi digital signal processor put out makes noise via eight channels, and digital music files from iOS, Android and Windows devices can also be streamed over Bluetooth. — WR.
