Fastest around SA’s bends and over the hills: KZN riders Travis Teasdale and Wade Young. PHOTO: QUICKPIC
Young and Teasdale dominate
The world’s fastest shopping trolley is one ride that will not be on display when 100s Bikers hosting a blood donor driver at the Vintage Sports Car Club on Oribi Road on Sunday, September 13. Entry is free and the fun starts at 11 am. All bikers are encouraged to come meet likeminded souls and show their rides, be it big or small, threewheeled trikes, feetforward scooters — or even powered shopping trolleys like this jet powered creation by Mat McKeown (more on page 8). KZN riders emerge champions at Winterberg TALENTED KZN rider Wade Young once again had the competition speechless when he won every single special test on the Winterberg Enduro over the weekend for six out of six wins this season. This makes the young Roof of Africa winner also South Africa’s National E2 Enduro champion. The Winterberg Enduro, which was also the final round of the Liquorland South African National Enduro championship took place this past weekend just outside of Port Elizabeth. Organisers had put together a challenging 47 km long loop, but had to reroute certain sections slightly just before the event, as the area had seen an unusual amount of winter rain and rivers were too full for bikes to cross. Each loop consisted of a 2,5 km Motocrosstype special test that was raced from the first lap, followed by a 3,2 km Extreme test, which was also timed from the first lap; and a longer 8 km Enduro special test that was timed from the second lap. Competitors were given two hours and five min utes for the first lap, 1:55 for the second lap, 1:50 for the third lap and 1:05 for a shortened fourth lap. None of the top competitors struggled making their times and therefore it was down to the special tests. “I enjoyed the race and a very big thanks goes out to the organisers who put a lot of effort into organising this event. I am extremely happy to fin ish the season on a high note and I’m truly grateful for the support that my family and my amazing team and sponsors are giving me, allowing me to be my best every time we go out on the track,” said Young. He added his KTM 300 EXC ran like a dream and he could not wait to race in upcoming extreme events like Red Bull Braveman, Red Bull Sea to Sky and the big one at the end of the year, the Roof of Africa. Always having Young’s back was his teammate Scott Bouverie who had a fantastic 2015 season, finishing second to Young in most races this year
and rounding off the E2 podium at the Winterberg Enduro, holding on to his second place overall in the E2 class, making it a onetwo for Brother Leader Tread KTM. Bouverie will unfortunately not be able to race the Roof of Africa event this year as he will have to undergo knee surgery in order to be ready for the 2016 season. Another top KZN rider, Travis Teasdale, con firmed that he is by far the fastest E1 rider South Africa has to offer, winning his fifth of six National E1 rounds at Winterberg on his KTM 250 XCF. Teasdale’s teammate in the Brother Leader Tread KTM team, Dwayne Kleynhans, also had his best season to date, rounding off the E1 Champion ship podium for 2015 with a respectable third place in the championship. Brother Leader Tread KTM’s female rider Kir sten Landman finished the Winterberg Enduro in fourth place in the Silver class, comfortably finish ing her season in third place in the Silver class as the only female rider in this class. Local PEbased favourite and offroad specialist Juan “Bollie” van Rooyen made a guest appearance in the Enduro championship and had a great race in the Seniors class, crossing the chequered flag in fourth place in the highly competitive class. In the Masters class Enduro legend Alfie Cox (Al fie Cox Racing KTM) had a great day out, however a crash on the final special test cost the talented rider a lot of time and he finished the day in third place in the Masters class onboard his KTM 250 XCW. The very exciting High School class was domi nated by one man this season, that being KTM Cen turion’s Eduan Bester who won six out of six races. He did not just clean up the Enduro High School class, but is also leading the High School class in the National Offroad championship with two more rounds to go that will take place on September 24 and 26 in Worcester in the Western Cape. — Supplied.

Aspen joins top league in driver health
SORENTO DOES 7 COUNTRIES IN 7 DAYS THREE journalists raised funds for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust through the Seven7 Drive in the allnew KIA Sorento, which covered nearly 7 000 km through seven southern African countries in just seven days, with the big Kia not missing a beat. War on bacteria starts with healthy staff ALWYN VILJOEN WITH on average 12 000 trucks a day thundering past Pieterma ritzburg on the N3, the city is grateful to all fleet operators who ensure their drivers and trucks are in the best health when negotiating the dangerous down run. One such fleet operator is Aspen Logistics, which last week launched its first drivers’ well ness day with MercedesBenz South Africa’s Trucking Well ness Programme. MD of the company, Dr Sujen Padayatchi, said the company al ready offers tailored health in surance and eyetesting at its head quarters in Germiston, but in partnering with Mercedes Benz its Trucking Wellness Pro gramme can take a step to be coming an ISO listed company, offering an holistic approach to employee health and wellness, based on a proven model. Padayatchi qualified as a med ical doctor in the UK before re turning to South Africa to be come involved in the transport business started by his father, Radha Padayatchi. With his medical background he is almost fanatical about maintaining the cold chain to combat bacteria in the group’s fleet of refrigerated trucks that transport perishable foods over

night. In this battle, he said healthy drivers were the critical factor. “We salute our drivers, they are the heroes who make it happen,” said Padayatchi. The Trucking Wellness Pro gramme (initially Trucking Against Aids) is managed by Corridor Empowerment Project and was launched by the Road Freight Industry in 1999 to cre ate HIV, Aids and STI awareness amongst longdistance truck drivers, commercial sex workers and the vulnerable communities around truck stops. Michelle Woods told Wheels last year saw 41 000 drivers and women at risk assessed. Since 1999 the initiative has HIV infec tions decrease from 20% to the current 8,9% of drivers screened. There has also been a 25% drop in sexually transmitted in fections and a 34% increase in drivers and sex workers seeking
treatment. This means the staff working on Trucking Wellness pro grammes can now focus on other diseases that impact drivers. Nurses Portia Mbatha and Si bongile Nala told Wheels that they listed their new priorities as diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure, before HIV and TB. The next level Aspen joins PMBbased fleet op erator Bakers, which became the first company to implement MercedesBenz’s Fleet Owner Workplace Programme that aims to assist fleet owners in tak ing a holistic approach to em ployee health and wellness, based on a proven model. This is the next level of corporate well ness companies can aspire to. • Contact Michelle Woods at info@truckingwellness.co.za for more information.
Bosch boss talks future servicing EWALD Faulstich, director of the automotive aftermarket di vision at Bosch South Africa, last weekend spoke to franchise holders from the KZN and East ern Cape regions on the status and future of their businesses. Speaking under the banner Workshops Concepts, Faulstich reminded the dealers they were part of 17 000 workshops glo bally. He said Africa was “ex tremely high” on the company’s agenda, with Boschbranded shops already operating in nine countries across Africa, which in turn systematically services another 14 states, and another 30 states offering an “oppor tunistic market approach”. This puts Africa in second on Bosch’s list, ahead of China and India. While Paris has already an nounced a ban on diesel cars in favour of electric vehicles and London is pondering a similar, move, Faulstich said he did not see electric drives becoming mainstream for at least another

PHOTO: ALWYN VILJOEN 20 years. “Diesel will for the next 15 years be the best system,” he said, referring to South Afri ca’s freight transport needs. In line with the trend that in creasingly shuns actually own ing a vehicle, he told the audi ence the Bosch automotive aft ermarket division is not focusing on reaching drivers, but “mobility users”, which could be the fleet owner, insurer or rental company.
The good news for all sellers of car parts is that South Africa’s car park is getting older in line with a slow down in new car sales, which historically leads to more older cars that need parts. The main battle in this regard is to wrest control from Original Equipment Manufacturers, who are currently doing every thing in their power to prevent owners from leaving their work shops for the more affordable parts at Bosch. Asked if Bosch franchises and training were not too expensive, he said the sums show a Bosch franchise costs an average work shop that services six cars a day only R25 a day, in exchange for which the business got 30% discounted parts, as well as low er phone bill. “I promise you, we are way out on the low end in franchise costs,” Faulstich said. As for the cost of training, Faul stich said: “You can’t save mon ey by cutting costs on training!” • alwyn.viljoen@witness.co.za

1 litre + 7 gears = Hooha! BRIAN BASSETT do the sums to find out if the Audi A1 is just a roomy Volkswagen Polo in drag SINCE the Audi A1 was launched in South Africa in 2011, it has moved through the ranks to the point where it now outsells the Mini, which is its main rival and has become something of an icon in its area of the market. At first only available with 1.2L, 1.4L and 1.6L engines, the A1 has recently been given a threecylinder, one litre en gine and I was delighted when Darryl Topper, dealer principal of the Audi Cen tre in Pietermaritzburg offered me an opportunity to spend a few days with the car. Styling The A1 is every inch an Audi. It is a com pact car with a 2,5 metre wheelbase and is just shy of four metres long and 1,9 metres wide. Yet the car appears smaller than these figures suggest and this is through some very clever design. In some ways the de sign is standard Audi fare with a large, single frame grille at the front, flanked by two headlights, which appear to squint into the distance. The car I drove also had two, useful fog lights built into the front bumper, which made quite a difference when I drove the car at night in the Midlands. What I enjoyed is the colour combina tions available for the car, which add a youthful and powerful dynamism to the entire design effect, providing a clue to the market sector at it is aimed. Needless to say the car uses a Volks wagen Polo platform, but the build qual ity is of the best and what we have come to expect from Audi.
which you become used to. Performance and handling I could not believe the power delivered by the threecylinder, 999cc, 70 kW/160 Nm engine. In fact, I phoned Audi to make sure they had given me the right car. The sevenspeed, tiptronic gearbox does a brilliant job of expressing this power on road and 0 to 100 km/h comes up in 10,9 seconds with top speed being around 180 km/h. Fuel consumption is about 5 l/100 km. I drove the car at fairly high speed on the Midlands back roads and the ride is stable and involving. Acceleration is en joyable and passing trucks on the N3 is no problem. In town this car comes into its own. The steering is direct and in control, slipping in and out of traffic and avoid ing taxis and traffic police is fun. This is a car for the young at heart and if you purchase a red one no one will notice your white hair. The A1 looks smaller than its 2.5 meter wheelbase, thanks to some very clever design. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Interior The front seats are infinitely adjusta ble and in my car were covered in a very durable cloth. Leather is available as an extra (bless the German Triumvirate) and, if you have a really good job, you can select multicoloured leather interi ors which will be the envy of your friends. I particularly liked the fine, white Nap pa leather on S sports seats with white, leathercovered gear lever and steering wheel. Impractical, but who cares, the
overall effect is stunning. All of the basic information is provided in digital form between the dials and a central screen folds up to give you a wide range of infor mation from radio to traffic. Also if you want to add the optional GPS and not make do with a Makro special like I do, the screen is large enough to guide you wherever you need to go. It folds away neatly when not required. The dashboard is framed by a multi function typically Audi steering wheel,
which operates a wide range of toys like cruise control, Bluetooth and a fine au dio/aux/ipod system to name but a few. You can also plug in whatever technol ogy the car does not provide. The rear seats are easy to access, but a little cramped for two adults of my size. The one feature I found somewhat ir ritating is the fact that you need to fold up the central arm rest in front in order to easily operate the handbrake and clip in the seatbelts, but this is a small matter
Costs and the opposition The entry model will cost you around R265 000, with the car I drove coming in at about R285 000. The 1.8L, threedoor sport costs some R385 000 and the rangetopping S1 Sportback Quattro costs about R465 000. For your money you also get a five year or 100 000 km maintenance plan, which is extendable. This is a competitive area and you should also look at the Alfa Mito, the Mini Cooper and the Citroën DS3.

Merc’s new coupé combo GLE masters the balancing act between extremely sporty yet still very comfortable MERCEDESBENZ is combining two classes of vehicle — each with its own distinct style — to make a new model, the MercedesBenz GLE Coupé. The sporty nature of a coupé domi nates, imbued with the striking charac teristics of a robust SUV. In addition to convincing onroad ve hicle dynamics, the GLE Coupé looks impressive as well. With its flowing side contour, elon gated and low greenhouse, striking radi ator grille with central chrome louvre and rear end design, the GLE Coupé cites styling features typical of particu larly sporty MercedesBenz models. The GLE Coupé is introduced with a diesel model — GLE 350d — with an output of 190 kW and a petrol model — GLE 450 AMG — delivering 270 kW. The topoftherange model GLE 450 AMG, is the first model of a new Mer cedesAMG product line — the AMG sports models — and is particularly at tractive. In addition to the generous amount of standard equipment, the Dynamic Select dynamic handling control sys tem, the Sports DirectSteer system and the driver assistance systems typical of the brand, the GLE Coupé comes with the 9GTronic ninespeed automatic transmission and 4Matic permanent allwheel drive. “Our GLE Coupé combines typical coupé attributes, such as sportiness, dy namism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV,” says Florian Seidler, coCEO MercedesBenz South Africa and execu tive director, MercedesBenz Cars. The GLE Coupé is the new addition to the successful portfolio of Mercedes Benz coupés. Alongside the classic, two door C, E and SClass models and the fourdoor CLS and CLAClass coupés, the new coupé displays a highly individ ual interpretation of the characteristics and lightfooted approach typical of this family of vehicles. “For MercedesBenz, the GLE Coupé is a leader for a versatile vehicle class. It will enable us to win new customers
The GLE 450 4MATIC (C 292) and the MercedesAMG GLE 63 (C 292) 2014. PHOTO: QUICKPIC for our brand,” adds Seidler. The GLE Coupé feels like a true sports coupé right from the word go. Despite the similarity to an SUV with its raised seating position and an all round view that is expansive for a coupé, the driver and passengers will feel that they are in sports rather than offroad mode. The sound is reminiscent of pow erful sports cars and, combined with the spontaneous and direct response to all commands, is guaranteed to get your
pulse racing. On the other hand, it can also create a superior feeling of calm, coupled with unshakably serene driving dynamics. These two different worlds can nor mally only be experienced in two sepa rate vehicles — an agile, thoroughbred sports coupé and an easygoing, com fortable SUV. But the new GLE Coupé is different: Dynamic Select enables a wide spread in the driving dynamics and combines

these diametrical worlds of experience in a single vehicle – an automobile pre miere. The GLE 450 AMG is the first AMG sports model. The balancing act be tween extremely sporty yet still com fortable has been mastered especially well in the GLE 450 AMG. As the first AMG sports model, the V6 topoftherange GLE Coupé ena bles an attractive entry to the world of the sports car and performance brand.
“The GLE 450 AMG Coupé is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performanceoriented models will follow in the near future. “The new product line from Mer cedesAMG has allowed us to make true sports car technology and the fascina tion of motorsports more accessible,” says Tobias Moers, chairperson of the board of management of Mercedes AMG GmbH. “Every vehicle from Affalterbach honours the brand promise of Driving Performance.” The new AMG sports models display impressive product substance and hon our the promise of sports performance with a higher output class, standard all wheel drive and also sophisticated chas sis solutions. In the GLE 450 AMG, Dynamic Se lect not only modulates the “hard skills” such as the chassis and suspension, steering or powertrain. It is also possible to experience the selected mode more intensively on an emotional level because various “soft skills” such as the engine sound, instru ments or dynamic control of the driving lights also vary. To this end, the nature of the various displays on the Comand screen and in the cockpit changes according to the se lected transmission mode while the ac tive light function of the allLED head lamps responds more spontaneously. Things are very different when SPORT+ mode is selected. The character changes immediately, the gear changes performed by the 9G TRONIC are acoustically accentuated, especially when downshifting with the doubledeclutch function, and the cock pit instruments respond faster and more “sharply”. — Supplied. Crashes clearly linked to driving while drunk THE Automobile Association (AA) said that there could be no doubt over the increase in risk as a result of alco hol, and drivers should ensure they are sober before taking to the roads. “It is still common to hear drivers claim they are safe to drive after drink ing,” the AA commented. “One often hears comments like ‘I’ve only had a few’, or ‘I’m a cautious driver’. However, research shows that although alcohol tolerance may vary from person to person, even small amounts can affect a driver’s ability to deal with traffic.” The AA was involved in ground breaking research conducted in 1992 by traffic criminologist Dr Lawrence Barit. Barit investigated the driving ability of dozens of participants against con trol groups by means of numerous wet and dry driving tests designed by the AA’s driver training arm. Each participant’s blood alcohol concentration was measured regularly as the day progressed and they became more intoxicated. One group of partic ipants deliberately stayed awake for 24 hours before the tests, so that the dual impacts of fatigue and alcohol con sumption could be investigated. The results were clear: the perform ance of the nondrinkers gradually im proved as they repeated the driving
tests. The drinkers got progressively worse until some had to be physically restrained from driving the test vehi cles due to the danger they posed. “Reduction in driving ability as in toxication increases is not the only danger on the roads, the AA comment ed. “At very high blood alcohol con centrations, loss of consciousness can occur, making crashes almost inevita ble among very heavily intoxicated drivers,” the Association said. An accident victim who is under the influence also presents a challenge to medical staff at the crash scene, com plicating treatment. The effects of al cohol may mask symptoms or interfere with the individual’s ability to commu nicate or cooperate with medical staff. Alcohol may also interact unfavoura bly with medications needed to treat an accident victim. The AA said the United Kingdom has low levels of drinking and driving even though most parts of the UK have a higher legal blood alcohol limit than South Africa,” the Association com mented. “This suggests that the solu tion does not lie with further regula tion, but with enforcement and educa tion. We call on the government to redouble its efforts in these areas to protect innocent road users from be coming the victims of drunk drivers.” — Supplied.

China makes evees for EU Government plans to give electric car makers more stick, less carrot ALWYN VILJOEN CHINA, long the trendsetter in com mercial electric vehicles through BYD busses, has attracted a slew of new in vestments into electric models, thanks to the Chinese government’s more stick, less carrot approach. China plans to reduce smog in its cit ies by setting aggressive emission and fuel economy standards for internal combustion engines by 2020 and driv ing sales of electric and plug in hybrids through subsidies. Chinese drivers of electric and hybrid passenger cars re ceive between 25 000 and 55 000 yuan (R51 500 to R113 000) per vehicle in sub sidies from the central government, which plans to cut these subsidies with 20% in 20172018 and by 40%. By rolling back the subsidies, the gov ernment wants to pressure automakers to reduce their currently high price for new energy vehicles, rather than relying on subsidies to profit, Yale Zhang, man aging director of consultancy Automo tive Foresight in Shanghai told Reuters. Many more evees in China At the Shangai Auto Show in April, Shanghai GM, a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor, said it would develop 10 “new energy mod els” by 2020. Last week, two more important con tracts signalled China’s lead on the West in making electric cars.
In the city of Chongqing, Korean bat tery maker LG Chem and China’s largest car builder, Changan Automobile Group, announced a partnership that will see the Koreans supply batteries for the Chinese car maker’s nextgeneration plugin hybrid model, starting from 2016. Changan Auto, founded in 1862, is China’s staterun auto maker which has its headquarters and R&D centre and is China’s largest car manufacturer, with sales of 40 trillion won ($33,8 billion) in 2014 and 80 000 employees. LG Chem has cooperated with Changan Auto since 2009 to promote the development of electric car batteries. Changan Auto is also reviewing the idea of expanding the application of the bat teries that it will use for the plugin hy brid models toward the entire range of its lineups. Chinese evees for Europe In the city of Tianjin, Chinese automak ers National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (Nevs) and Dongfeng Motor Corpora tion had in the same week signed a stra tegic cooperation agreement to jointly develop electrified cars. Nevs, which bought bankrupt car maker Saab in 2012, will help Dongfeng sell its own brand cars through the Nevs dealer network in Europe and the United States, and also meet European legal and technical requirements. Dongfeng will support Nevs to mass
plant — the real “engine” of electric cars in China — on average emits 3,6 times more smog particles than the exhaust of a petrolengined passenger car. This puts air pollution from an electric four seater car on par with that of a diesel bus, which spreads across the number of passengers it carries, but still less than a diesel car. The electric car’s pollution is, howev er, concentrated downwind from the power plant’s cooling towers, and not behind each vehicle’s exhaust, which is why Chinese corporates are prepared to meet both government’s aims and the market’s demand for cars that don’t pass gas on the street.
A study in China found an electric passenger car that gets its power from a coalfired power plant makes as much air pollution as a diesel bus. PHOTO: YOUTUBE produce electric vehicles production and expand Nevs’ sales and service with sup port from Dongfeng’s dealer network. Nevs announced in June that it broke ground on a factory with a potential ca pacity of 200 000 cars as well as a re search and development centre, with two Chinese partners pledging to invest 1,2 billion yuan ($187,68 million). Dongfeng has formed several strategic long term partnerships with other inter national major car manufacturers in cluding AB Volvo and as a 14% stake in the French conglomerate PSA. Dongfeng Motor, with several JVs in
China including Peugeot, Citroën, Ren ault, Nissan, Infinity, Honda and Kia, is one of the world’s largest automobile companies, with an annual output of over 3,83 million units in 2014 and 1,83 million in the first half of 2015. Keeping the smog upstream Not everyone thinks it is a good idea to promote electric vehicles in China. The journal Environmental Science and Technology in March published a study by Chris Cherry, an electric vehicle analyst at the University of Tennessee, that shows each coalfired electric power
A leak in the hydrogen dream In America, meanwhile, Toyota and Hyundai are still battling to stock fuel stations for the first few pioneers that bought hydrogen cars. Toyota is on record that it sees no progress that will extend the limited range of current bat teries for at least a decade, which is why it is trying to replace the world’s current petroleumbased fuel stations with hy drogen stations — a slow and very, very expensive process for which drivers will eventually pay. The main problem right now is not money, but containing hydrogen, the smallest molecule, which will leak through even polished steel. Meanwhile, as BMW pointed out, ev ery lamp post on every street offers a readymade recharging point for current electric vehicles. Which is why China’s government seems to agree with Tesla’s Elon Musk that Toyota’s reason for pur suing hydrogen cars is bulls**t.

An ebike for muddy farms Ubco bike powers with both wheels ALWYN VILJOEN NEW Zealand electric bike builders An thony Clyde and Daryl Neal are now tak ing orders for their Ubco farm bike. They each boast a decade’s experience in the ebike industry before deciding to combine forces to create a light electric offroad bike that can carry tools and be used on New Zealand’s muddy farms. The pair boast their Ubco drive elec tric bike is in a league of its own. Apart from the duel electric drive train that gives instant torque to both wheels and low centre of gravity due to the 40 amp battery mounted where the ped als would go on a normal bike, the Ubco also has a 12 volt outlet to power electric
appliances like a drill, as well as an USB port to power the smartphone. The battery range is specified at 150 km over flat country, or 100 km over steep hills. That battery does take the Ubco’s weight to 50 kg — hefty by mountain bike standards — but still light enough to be manhandled over most fences. With no clutch, there is nothing to scrape or bump and none of the normal greasy maintenance routines that pet roldriven farm bikes require. The sturdy frame gives the Ubco a 200 kg payload. To handle the weight, the suspension comprises adjustable shocks front and rear, riding on Innova Tough Gear wheels with 70/100/17 tyres.

Qhubeka bikes for JHB pupils DIMENSION Data, in partnership with the City of Joburg, Qhubeka and Bhoni4Kasi, has sponsored 293 bicy cles to pupils at three high schools in Orlando, Soweto, to combat the frequent absenteeism and exhaus tion experienced by pupils walking to school in this area. Lubabalo Dyantyi, executive di rector, public sector — Dimension Data Middle East & Africa at Dimen sion Data says, “In this region some pupils walk for more than 60 minutes or over six kilometres to school. “By the time they arrive, they are exhausted. Distance to school is a barrier that can be eliminated by us ing bicycles — with the bicycles we are donating to the pupils, their time spent travelling to school will be re duced by up to 75%.” The recipient schools in Soweto are Noordgesig Secondary School, Orlando High School and Bona Comprehensive School. They were selected by the City of Joburg, which has been working closely with the Department of Transport over re cent months, as well as the high schools’ governing bodies and prin cipals, to set up a sustainable bicycle distribution programme in the area. Pupils are required to meet certain qualifying criteria to be able to re ceive a Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycle, which is a robust bicycle engineered specifically for African terrain and load requirements. Pupils selected for the programme will also be sup ported with bike safety and mainte nance training, provided by Ekasi Cycle and Bhoni4Kasi, a cycling or ganisation that aims to address cy cling challenges within Soweto com munities. “The Sowetan cycling scene is changing and we aim to be pioneers of this change,” says Bho ni4Kasi’s Raymond Rampolokeng. The City of Joburg has also built dedicated cycling paths in Orlando, stretching over five kilometres and in close proximity to the schools that will be receiving the sponsorship. The cycling paths provide a safer way for children to cycle to school. Qhubeka is World Bicycle Relief’s programme in South Africa. World Bicycle Relief is a global nonprofit organisation dedicated to advancing education, health and economic op portunities by providing simple, sus tainable transportation. World wheelie champion Elvington Airfield in the UK sees the fastest wheelie, fastest toilet and, of course, a garden shed SPIROS TSANTILAS SOME consider it to be a blatant display of antiso cial behavior, while for others it’s a demonstration of skill. Whichever way one choses to see it, the wheelie is a stunt so popular with motorcyclists that it has its own world championship and the 10 edition of the event last week drew thousands of spectators to the Elvington Airfield in the UK, there to watch 30 specialists from Finland, France, Holland, Ire land, Sweden, UK and U.S. go against the speed traps for a shot at the title. The rules are simple: The winner is the fastest rider over a full kilometer on the back wheel of his motorcycle. There’s no bonus for style, no tro phy for 12 o’clock wheelies; the only thing that mat ters is outright speed. The 2015 World Wheelie Champion is Gary Rothwell from the UK, who was clocked at 197,879 mph (318,455 km/h) on his turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa at the end of his run. In the process he managed to beat last year’s winner, Egbert van Popta from Holland, who clocked 195,805 mph (315,118 km/h), also onboard a Hayabusa turbo. Third place went to Paddy O’Sullivan form Ireland, who wheelied his turbo charged Suzuki GSXR1000 to a top speed of 189,822 mph (305,489 km/h). Despite the fierce competition, Van Popta’s 199,4 mph (320,9 km/h) record from last year still stands. Apart from turbocharged Hayabusas, the Top Speed event usually attracts the most extravagant participants and this year wasn’t any different. The two V8s of Allen Millyard and Zef Eisenberg (of the MadMax team that recently ran a turbine bike to new speed records) stood out in a competi tion that included the world’s fastest toilet, the turbine supermarket trolley, the mini post office racing van and, of course, a garden house. The latter managed to clock 113,9 km/h, officially cementing its world dominance. Until another one rises to the challenge, it will remain the world’s fastest garden shed. — Gizmag.

Dezzi to host the fastest Audis in SA ON Saturday, the 2,5km long twisting ribbon of tar at Dezzi Raceway at Marburg will host the sixth round of the 2015 National Production Car Cham pionship (NPCC) series for the first time. With three Audi S4 quattro racers at the top of the leaderboard, it looks more and more like the NPCC title will go to one of these three com petitors this season. At the top of the log is Hennie Groenewald (8 — Audi Sasolracing) who is currently nine points in the lead. Second spot is held by Michael Stephen (12 — Engen Xtreme) while Gennaro Bonafede (32 — Audi Sasolracing) is in third place — with a three point gap between them. This thin 12point spread between the top three racers will certainly prove to be the catalyst for some exciting racing in the remaining rounds — and with the Audi S4 quattro racers 26 points ahead of the fourthplaced competitor, their domi nance in this series is hard to challenge. For Simon Moss (38 — Engen Xtreme) the Dezzi Raceway event presents an opportunity to focus on his race results. Moss has made great strides with his qualifying results, appearing on the front row of the starting grid twice recently. A round of the championship at a new circuit creates the possibility that his pace will prove more valuable than the experience the other racers have at the regular circuits, and a good result could see him claim the three points he needs to break into being amongst the top five competitors this sea son. Another round, a new circuit and four very de termined Audi S4 quattro racers is an opportunity to see some fastpaced and exciting national circuit racing in NPCC. The challenge is most likely to result in some of the toughest ontrack battles seen yet in the 2015 season.

The final round of the 2015 DEOD SuperGP Champions Trophy takes place at Dezzi Raceway in KwaZuluNatal on September 19. KNEEDRAGGING THRILLERS AWAIT On September 19, the superbikers will also get to test their kneedragging skills on the tight turns at Dezzi for the final round of the 2015 DEOD Su perGP Champions Trophy. Clint Seller (NeoLife Africa Yamaha R1) took two comfortable wins in the sixth round of the 2015 DEOD SuperGP Champions Trophy, held at Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga on Saturday, August 22. The defending champion now has a 27 point lead at the top of the log with just one event left to run. If the Super 600 riders stay true to form, their race will be especially worth watching at Dezzi’s. At Red Star, Super 600 rider Steven Odendaal (NeoLife Africa Yamaha R6) and Anthony Shell ey (EmTek Racing Nashua Yamaha R6) rode a thriller with their bikes never more than a couple lengths apart for the entire 14 laps. Shelley was in front for most of the race, but Odendaal man aged to get past with just a couple of laps to go. Shelley didn’t give up though and the gap at the flag was just a tenth of a second. Contender for the third spot Adolf Boshoff (Indy Oil Toy Store Kawasaki ZX6) crashed out around the halfway mark just after setting his fastest lap of the race leaving Michael White (Consortium Shipping Kawasaki ZX6 to take the final podium position.
