Roadtripping with a Jimny ALWYN VILJOEN tests Suzuki’s new go-anywhere runabout for a lady lad who wants to buy one I HAVE now spent over 15 hours in the cute-as-a-button Jimny, driving as many dirt roads as I could find from Hazyview in Mpumalanga to Maritzburra, and my kidneys aren’t bleeding. That tells you all you need to know about the soft ride the new Jimny offers. In fact, it’s almost too soft for some of the muddy slopes I tackled, but what it loses on the bumps, it makes up on tar, where the new Jimny is as comfortable as Suzuki’s engineers could make a short, light, proper 4x4. So you can put a “Yes” next to the question “Can I live with this car in town?” But let not my need for harder dampers, erm, dampen your enthusiasm for this hardy little car. Focus rather on how little fuel I used — getting over 20 km a litre by travelling at a sedate 100 on tar and averaging 14 km from each litre in town, according to the onboard computer. Shoulder-rubbing tight Inside, I enjoyed being able to slot my music in either an SD card reader or a USB port. The USB port has a little cover that you have to slide up with a fingernail. On a gravel road, this cover promptly slid down, requiring me to play three-finger twister to lift that little cover and slot in a memory stick or power cable at the same time. Suzuki makes much of the big buttons and infrared touchscreeen that were designed to be used with gloves, but they clearly did not aim that little USB lid at people who will wear gloves in a car with airconditioning and a good heater. There is of course a glove box to put gloves in, but all your other paraphanelia better go in a narrow bag at the back. The “cellphone tray” is only good when parked on the level, and the few hollows left will barely fit your smoker’s pharaphenalia. So, yes, it’s shoulder-rubbing tight in there. This is perfect if you are taking that special some-
one to a romantic spot on top of a mountain. Just don’t try to load the dogs. Their drool may drown you in that tiny cabin. What won’t drown you is rain from outside, thanks to a new drip rail all-round. At the rear this rail looks like a tiny down force wing, but it works well to stop water from running into your neck when loading stuff. Which model? I realise for you “which model” translates to “which colour” and you are spoiled for choice, with eight colours, ranging from Jungle Green to Brisk Blue and, of course, White. But what you should be asking is about the spec levels, and between the GA or GLX, I’d pick the GLX manual. It can be recognised by its 15” alloy wheels, colour-coded door handles and painted exterior mirrors. Inside, it boasts climate control, electric windows and mirrors, auto LED projector headlamps, remote central locking and cruise control. The GLX models are also fitted with Suzuki’s Smartphone Linkage Display Audio (SLDA). This double-DIN audio system has a 7-inch infrared-touch screen with Android Auto, Apple Carplay and MirrorLink integration. The system also has Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and the most important features can be controlled by buttons on the leather-covered steering wheel. New, but shorter The new Jimny is the first model in automotive history that is a bit shorter than the predecessor. Yet, there is bit more space inside and with the rear seats flat, you have enough space for a long weekend’s luggage. The engine is larger, up from a 1,3 to a 1,5 that makes 75 kW at 6 000 rpm and 130 Nm at 4 000 rpm. These are high revolutions to do 4x4 crawling with, but somehow the engineers made the little engine deliver the
goods even at just above idle. I tried to stall it by crawling up rocky slopes in first gear with the rev needle under 1000, but the Jimny just kept on climbing. It really can climb anywhere I know you don’t want me to bore with the mechanicals, but at least memorise Allgrip Pro, which is at the heart of the Jimny’s formidable offroad abilities, Unlike the old model, which had buttons, the 2018 Jimny comes with a 1970s lever to select 4x2, or 4x4 high, or the 4x4 low range transfer case. Don’t worry about the old lever’s cable not being able to shift between 2 high and 4 high on the fly, as it is secretly still a electronic button system that shifts at up to 100 km/h. And when 4Lo is engaged, the Jimny will crawl up anywhere while there is grip, thanks to Suzuki’s proprietary Brake Limited Slip Differential and electronic stability control systems. The Brake LSD-system adjusts torque to the wheel with grip if another wheel on the same axle starts spinning. Below 30km/h in 4Lo, the system provides extra power to ensure it goes up where you want it to. Brake LSD is supported by Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control, standard on both models. Hill Descent Control will maintain a descent speed of 10km/h in 4WD high range and 5 km/h in 4WD low range, which is a bit too slow for most areas. Talking of slow, you can have a four speed automatic or a five speed manual. Don’t even think of the auto. Just trust me on this. The GLX comes with a fouryear or 60 000 km service plan while the cheaper GA has half this — two years or 30 000 km. All models are sold with a fiveyear or 200 000 km mechanical warranty. WERE 300 ‘DAGGA DRIVERS’ FIRED UNFAIRLY? LAST week’s dismissal of 300 drivers who allegedly tested positive for cannabis use by a Pretoria-based outsourcing company raised a lot of questions from more scrupulous fleet managers. Arnoux Maré, MD of Innovative Staffing Solutions, said in a media statement a truck driver “under the influence of cannabis can be likened to a non-coherent person barrelling a 60-tonne missile down the road at 80 to 100km per hour”.
But when asked in writing which test was used, how this influence manifested, and what cannaboids were found, the company did not reply. This may be because, other than seeing someone obviously stoned with red eyes and droopy lids, there is as yet no reliable test to show if a person is “under the influence” of cannabis. This is because the metabolite that is tested for enters a person’ fat, from where it is released into the
bloodstream for up to six weeks after now legally using cannabis in private. While persons will test positive for cannabis weeks after use, they are no longer “under the incluence”, whatever this may mean in a court of law. Comparative driving tests of drivers who smoked cannabis during these tests also consistently deliver mixed results, with regular users showing no or very little impaired driving. • Alwyn.Viljoen@witness.co.za
The Jimny GLX comes in eight colours. This is Jungle Green, which looks very similar to the indigenous Cannabis Sativa at the back, but its dagga-colour is not why the Jimny could drive on wet grass in 2 High. It is because this is the little 4x4 that can. PHOTO: ALWYN VILJOEN

Scooter has big power All-electric bike promises to out accelerate anything in traffic up to 60 km/h ALWYN VILJOEN UP north, past the European mainland, there is dreary island chilled by the northern sea where the petrolheads make up for their lack of palm trees and sunshine by churning out an extraordinary amount of very exciting vehicles. This island is not Malta, which gave us the Black Mamba, a 600kW electric trike, but good old England, which gave us, well, everything else fast on wheels, including the engines that power Nascar racers in the States. One of those islanders, a banker who owns several superbikes, has now come up with something truly insane — a 587 Nm electric scooter that zaps the 0-60 km run in under three seconds. Fittingly, it is called the Zapp i300. To put this power in perspective, consider that South Africa’s strongest bakkie, the MercedesBenz X-Class 350d, makes 550 Nm. The farmers’ favourite, Toyota’s Land Cruiser 4,0 V6, only makes 360 Nm. Ergo, this is one hell of a strong scooter. “But”, says the crowd at the bar, “on bikes we don’t want Newtons, we want Watts, wot wot?” They have a point when talking of those fossil fuel engines that are costing so much in petrol these days. For Newtons show the size of the engine’s muscles, while Watts indicate the engine’s work rate — basically, how fit those muscles are in order to move fast without tearing apart. But when it comes to electric motors, which have fewer moving parts than the wasteful internal combustion engine, that work rate can be low, as long as there is loads of torque to accelerate the Zapp’s ultra low-profile nitrogen-filled rear tyre, fitted to a 14-inch alloy wheel. And 587 Newtons is more than

enough to propel the Zapp from 0-60 in 2,4 seconds. Sixty does not sound fast, until you do it in traffic. Especially on tiny bike that weighs only 90 kg. At its top speed of 90 km/h the Zapp has a range of 56 km, with a full charge taking less than three hours. Zapp said in a statement they aim “to lead the urban transport
revolution”, and it starts with the battery design. The Zapp i300 is powered by a pair of cutting-edge, lightweight 48V high energy density lithium-ion batteries and a maintenance-free air-cooled interior permanent magnet electric motor. Unlike conventional AC induction motors currently used in the majority of electric scooters,
the Zapp i300’s British-made, interior magnet motor does not have rotor windings. Instead, it uses magnets located inside the rotor to turn it at the same speed as the magnetic field. Each battery is removable for easy recharging, is about the size of a laptop and weighs less than 5kg. The batteries can be plugged it into any household socket to
Prize money to name GM’s ebike GENERAL Motors is asking people around the globe to help name the new eBike in the eBikeBrandChallenge.com. recharge. The Zapp also boasts regenerative braking to recharges the battery on the go. Using the regenerative braking system as the primary means to slow down in heavy traffic not only increases the longevity of the scooter’s brakes, but also reduces another pollution element — particulates in the air. The electric motor is built into the structure of the bike, doing away with the body shell under the seat. Instead — and forming part of the distinctive ‘Z’-shaped curve — the under-seat area is hollow, both to save weight and present a striking profile. To stop, the Zapp uses crossdrilled vented full-floating discs with a four-piston calliper and ABS. Progressive-rate gas-filled upside-down front forks with a rear coilover pushrod and mono rear swing arm suspension, all inspired by superbikes, ensure grip and an engaging ride. That bike-loving banker and Zapp boss, Swin Chatsuwan, said: “With its revolutionary design, thrilling performance, and clean power source, we believe the i300 is the urban mobility solution people have been looking for.” In the UK, the Zapp i300 can be pre-ordered direct from the Zapp website with a £500 deposit. The first 1 000 pre-orders will be delivered in Launch Edition, which includes a complimentary upgrade to diamond cut wheels, special graphics and a limited edition x/1000 plate. First deliveries are expected to be made in early Q2 2019. The Zapp i300 has a starting on-the-road price of £5 250 prior to the UK government’s Plug-in Motorcycle Grant. On that island, the Zapp can be leased from as little as £19 per week.

ALL ELECTRIC MERCEDES MERCEDES-BENZ Cars is taking a holistic approach to powertrain electrification under its new technology and product brand — Electric Intelligence (EQ). The EQ portfolio offers a comprehensive electric mobility ecosystem of products, services and innovations. Mercedes-Benz is driving a three-lane system strategy across all vehicle segments with electric models (EQ), plug-in hybrids (EQ Power) and electrified combustion engines (EQ Boost). The marque said it will offer more than 10 purely electric vehicles by 2022.
GULAS, a start-up German company in Berlin, has released two models of the Gulas electric bike, which is licensed as a light motorcycle in Germany due to its power and a top speed of over 100 km/h. The company says the bike provides the best aspects of bicycles and motorbikes. It has a bicycle’s pedal, seat position and interface, which offers exercise as well as zero emissions and no noise. But riders on steep hills also get a motorbike’s power, suspension, speed and brakes, for when the speed is suddenly not needed. The motor, which comes in either 8 kW or 28 kW, is controlled through the pedals — the faster they revolve, the more power the motor gets and the faster the bike goes. The pedaling does not pow-

“We have turned the standard motorcycle world on its head by expecting the rider to be physically active in order to get and keep
moving. You will be surprised how much fun it is to exercise when you feel super human,” the Gulas website states. The entry level Gulas Pi1 has an 8kW/60Nm motor with a top speed of 90 km/h and a range of up to 240 km. The Sport version, the Pi1S, makes 28 kW, 100 Nm and has a top speed of 115 km/h. Charging time for the 10 kWhour battery is up to nine hours. While Gulas blurs the lines between bicycle and motorbike, it leans firmly to top-end motorbike prices when it comes to selling their hand-built bikes. Prices for the various configurations that are possible start at R317 908 and go to over R396 420, and that’s before import taxes. — WR.
Sumitomo Rubber promotes safer tyres NEWCASTLE-BASED bus and truck tyre maker, Sumitomo Rubber, has partnered with the Part Worn Africa initiative to promote tyre safety. Following Transport Month in October Sumitomo has now taken up the mantle as continental custodian and steward of Part Worn Africa, a new
pan-African consumer, tyre and road safety advocacy initiative. CEO Riaz Haffejee said the safety of Sumitomo’s customers is pivotal to the company’s success as a business. He said many tyre buyers opt for second-hand tyres with no knowledge of the tyre’s age or repair history, which togeth-
er with the illegal and highly dangerous practice of ‘re-grooving’ tyres create dangerous driving conditions. Haffejee said various studies have shown that defective tyres are one of the leading contributors to fatal collisions — representing as much as two thirds of vehicle factors respon-
sible for collisions. The group’s Dunlop Container Programme has now established 120 containers nationally and SRSA continues to create awareness and education around this critical topic. He mooted controls to govern the condition of second hand tyres in SA.

All models will be paired with Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), producing 115kW and 196 Nm of torque. The premium model will offer the double X-Mode system, which automatically adjusts the throttle power for mud or sand. Other Forester models have the standard X-Mode single mode function. Both versions feature Subaru’s Hill descent control. Having been released into select markets globally over the last month, the new Forester has been named as a World Car of the Year 2019 candidate. Pricing will be announced closer to the time. — WR.

MOTORING RACING

Finally, a title in the bag Maritzburg-based racing crews bring home first and third in the SA cross country championship GLENHARVIE — The Ford Neil Woolridge Motorsport (NWM) team of Lance Woolridge and Ward Huxtable claimed Class T championship glory at the Gold 400, the action-packed finale of the 2018 South African Cross Country Series (SACCS). A faultless drive in the extremely dusty and rocky terrain along Gauteng’s gold mining belt saw the Ford Ranger crew secure the Class T crown after finishing the event in second place. They ended just under two minutes behind race winners Gary Bertholdt and Geoff Minnitt (Toyota), the eventual runners-up in the title chase. The expected challenge from 2017 champions Johan and Werner Horn evaporated when their Toyota was sidelined with alternator failure. “I am exceptionally happy with finally winning the championship, especially after coming so close last year,” Lance said. “With three wins for the year it has been a great season, although the Horn brothers gave us a good fight throughout the season, and it’s really tough for them to end the year this way. But that’s motor racing. “This isn’t a one-man effort, and my thanks go to the entire team for the huge amount of work they have done the whole

PHOTO: QUICKPIC year,” he added. The national title is Lance’s first. Fittingly, he and longstanding navigator Huxtable scored the first victory for the new-generation Ford Ranger V8 on its debut in 2013. This is Huxtable’s third national crown, having won the Class E co-driver’s titles in 2006 and 2010. Gareth Woolridge and Boyd Dreyer enjoyed a relatively clean run, hampered by a single punc-
ture, to end third in the race as well as in the final Class T standings. It was an impressive comeback from the young duo, rounding off a determined drive for the second half of the season after a frustrating start to this year’s campaign. The Brazilian X Rally Team of Marcos Baumgart and Kleber Cincea completed their season with a seventh-place finish in the
race in the third of the NWMbuilt Ford Rangers. Although they showed competitive pace on the Gold 400, a series of punctures cost them precious time. “We have really enjoyed racing in South Africa,” Baumgart said. “This series is extremely competitive and has a wide range of very challenging conditions. “We gained a lot of experience racing here in the NWM Ranger, and this has really helped us in
Final fight for KZN titles at Dezzi Raceway COLIN WINDELL IF edge of your seat action is part of your plan for the weekend, then Dezzi Raceway, Oslo Beach will be the place to be as the KZN Road Racing Club Championships move into the final round for the 2018 season and, with double points on offer the final rush to secure titles in the various categories will produce plenty of frenetic action. Nine of the racing categories have titles hanging in the balance — 10 if the Retro Racing fraternity is included, although they do not score double points — with the tightest tussle on the car side coming in Class C of the Modified Saloons where Tim Kinsey (VW Golf) has a slender 17 point lead over Barry Liggins (Dart BMW) and a 31 point advantage over Dave Burton (VW Golf). These three have been trading line honours throughout the season that began back in February and has seen them in action nine times since then. The Super Modified class is also a three-way tussle with Elton Fuchs (VW Golf) having the edge, some 78 points to the good over Dieter Ziesing (BMW) who, in turn, is just one point ahead of Paul Tarboton (VW Golf) — and fans can be assured no quarter will be given, or asked, in this final two-heat encounter. The Sports Car category also presents some interesting possiblities with John Oliver (Lotus 7) leading the charge on 183 points from Tony McCree (VW Special) on 128 and Byron Oliver (Lotus 7) on
Masters class The 300 Masters is also one going down to the wire with class leader Gona Pillay (Kawasaki) a mere 25 points to the good over Desmond Samuels with Mark Jansen and everpresent threat in third place.
Elton Fuchs leads the Super Modified class in his VW Golf.
Roy Hallett is ahead in points in the CBR150 Master category. PHOTOS: COLIN WINDELL 128 points with Mark Futcher (Lotus 7) not out of the running on 109 points. To add spice to this class, all three of the Backdraft Cobra replicas will be in action and, even though Duncan dos Reis (Pirelli Porsche) wrapped up the Super GT title at the last outing, his battle with the Porsche of Willie de Beer will provide additional spice to the mix. Intense two-wheel dices n the two-wheel side one of the best battles to watch will come in the CBR150 Master category where the race to the
title is being led by Roy Hallett on 353 points from Llewelyn Puren (301), Jacques van Eeden (275) and Sven Christensen (223). These identical Honda CBR 150 machines always produce intense racing with the lead changing from corner to corner. Although Baron O’Hagan pretty much has the ‘junior’ CBR150 class wrapped up, the chase for second place remains hectic with 10-year-old Lee Singh on the DoubleApex Honda fighting off challenges from Vincent de Bock and Kendra Trevethan.
Open Class The Open Class sees Puren against Hallett again with the former 55 points to the good as they line up for the start — with a similar tight situation in the 600 Class where Nikolai Conci leads the field on 240 points from Clinton Massey-Hicks (223) and Kewin Bond on 200. The same Conci also leads the 300 Class but is under immense pressure here from his brother, Jessie, who is just 56 points behind and determined to get the final chequered flag of the season. Retro Racing In the Retro Racing category there will two visiting drivers — Jackie Morrison (Johannesburg) will be driving Bennie Hayes’ Escort and Murray Moore (Zambia) will be driving his father’s Ford Escort. John Rowe will be driving Oliver Broome’s Kharmann Ghia. Racing starts at 10 am and Entrance is R80.
