Thrills at first tribute rally Live streaming, white-knuckle fund-raising rides, farm fare and a big field expected at first Dalton Zane Rencken Tribute Rally ALWYN VILJOEN FOR the pit crew and family who accompany the drivers and navigators to the far-flung places where rallies are held, it is a case of long waits between ducking dust and flying pebbles at the old style spectator points. The Natal Motorcycle and Car Club aim to change all this with a World Rally Championship style Fan Zone, which will be a hive of activity on October 27. This event will have the action live streamed to TV screens at the Dalton Farmers Club, a South African rally first. With a full bar area avaliable, food and drinks on sale, including a ice cream van, all tastes are catered for. A fenced-in play area with a jumping castle will provide safe fun for the little ones.

Between racing eight invigorating stages totalling some 100 km through sugar cane fields and plantations, the crews will refuel and service the race cars in front of the club house, where fans can watch them in action and meet drivers and navigators. Organiser Dean Redelinghuys said some 40 competitors affiliated to either Motorsport South Africa (MSA) or the World of Motorsport ZA (Womza) will for the first time compete against each other in a tribute rally to local rally racer Zane Rencken, who died earlier this year in a work-related accident. “It is fitting this head to head competition will be run under the banner of sportsmanship and unity, as the rallying community pay tribute to a much respected competitor,” he said.

The event will also offer fans white-knuckle rides in two rally cars over a short, action-packed stage at R150 per ride, to raise funds for Reach for a Dream Foundation as well as the Newton School Rally Car Project. Pupils at the school in Pietermaritzburg have been working on building a VW Golf rally car, which they aim to enter in local races early next year. The Reach For a Dream Foundation will be in attendance, under their Captain Courage banner, to give excited youngsters the thrill of a rallycar ride. “We appeal to all rally enthusiasts, spectators and families joining us on the day to support this worthy cause,” said Redelinghuys. • To get involved, contact Dean Redelinghuys on 083 657 1526.

On October 27, rally fans can experience why KZN’s sugar cane fields make for fantastic rallies, as demonstrated here by KZN’s fastest Etios racers, Toyota Gazoo Racing SA team’s Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle. PHOTO: TOYOTA SA

Inhibiting repairs Right to Repair pushes for transformation, economic growth

One of three driver “assistants” projected as holograms in the new FAW SUV’s dashboard is a miniskirted anime character. PHOTO: YOUTUBE

HOLOGRAMS INSTEAD OF SIRI OR ALEXA FAW has launched its new SUV with the next level of Apple’s Siri and Android’s Alexa — on-board holograms that project “driver assistants” on the dashboard. The holograms are part of FAW’s new Pentium SUV, the “T77” which Chinese buyers can already order. In the video, a rotating hologram projector on the car’s dashboard projects characters that “engage” with drivers. The first character is a typical anime style girl with blonde hair and a short skirt. The second is a small boy playing basketball and the third is a white robot. FAW say the hologram assistants will interact and entertain drivers. The car was first shown to consumers at a plant in the city of Changchun, capital of China’s Jilin province. Like Siri and Alexa, the holograms respond to voice commands and will be able to carry out actions such as lowering the windows, turning on the windscreen wipers and 41 other capabilities. Drivers will be able to choose which character they want to act as their driver assistant. — WR.

GOOD news for the motor sector is that despite the tough economic times facing South Africans, more independent workshops are opening their doors, with a growing number of these being black-owned. On the downside, if there isn’t change in terms of allowing these workshops access to fair competition in the market, they will not be open for long. “There is great potential for real transformation which will lead to economic growth in this sector particularly,” said Gunther Schmitz, chair of Right to Repair South Africa (R2RSA). He explained that current exclusionary practices mean SMEs are being driven out of business. “If there is no change, it’s likely that in five years workshops will no longer be able to service vehicles.” Pieter Niemand, director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (Miwa), said from July 2016 to August 2018 over 230 black-owned workshops have become Miwa members. This is out of a total of 520 workshops that joined during the same period. “This is encouraging. The majority of our members are small businesses. We believe it is our mandate to create and promote a culture wherein member businesses will meaningfully participate in transformation which will enable inclusive growth and employment for all.” Niemand added that the regulatory environment poses huge challenges for small business as the application of laws is unpredictable, resulting in businesses losing focus on growth. “Equal opportunities will achieve and maintain a competitive economy, ensuring all members remain sustainable. However, we believe strongly that only through change in respect of the right to repair will the economy open up for these workshops and make this more viable,” he said. Sisa Mbangxa, chair of the African Panel Beaters and Motor Mechanics Association, agreed,

Nelson Gumede is one of thousands of mechanics who hope to benefit from the Right2Repair campaign. PHOTO: ALWYN VILJOEN adding that many previously disadvantaged individuals who open automotive repair workshops found out they can’t work on cars that are in warranty and are insured vehicles. “They can’t even work on government vehicles due to red tape, monopoly and unfair competition in the automotive industry. We believe that with the introduction of Right to Repair in South Africa the previous disadvantaged artisans or workshops will be able to compete fairly with the historical advantaged workshops.” He said this will assist these workshops to have more work and thrive. “Right to Repair will also assist our government in ad-

dressing radical economic transformation. “Decent and sustainable jobs will be created and will bring back human dignity to currently impoverished communities.” Previously disadvantaged individuals’ workshops will have access to technical information from workshops and branding where necessary. “Another serious challenge that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency is the lack of infrastructure in the townships and rural areas, skills upgrades and so on,” said Mbangxa. Schmitz said the implementation of the proposed code of conduct will open the way for more previously disadvantaged indi-

viduals to own dealerships and other businesses in the sector. “Currently, aftermarket repairers are being denied access to codes, tools, information and parts. In addition, it is financially inaccessible for many to become accredited service providers for Original Equipment manufacturers [OEMs]. “OEMs may argue that the safety of the driver will be compromised because of parts quality and skills of repairers, and that warranties are standard across all industries. “Our response is that parts are manufactured by suppliers not OEMs, and the aftermarket is highly skilled. “The inaccessibility to information is inhibiting repairs, not skills. Just because warranties are standard across industries in SA does not mean they should not be challenged. “In Europe and the United States warranties are handled differently. Ultimately, we need to create jobs and sustain them. “We need transformation and empowerment. The time for change is now,” he said. National Association of Autormotive Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) on Monday released a statement in which it said automotive companies accept most of the principles in the Draft Voluntary Code of Conduct by the Competition Commission, however, the proposed operational application thereof needs further extensive consideration and review. In this regard, Naamsa is in the process of preparing a response regarding, amongst other things, in-warranty work, training and other elements — for submission to the Competition Commission by end October 2018. Naamsa said it envisages an “evolving process which will involve further discussions with the Competition authorities”, and that the association will meet the ministry of Economic Development on transforming the automotive value chain. — WR.

Engen Driver Wellness sees more truckers get tested ENGEN Driver Wellness started Transport Month by again providing free health screenings to long distance drivers at select stops in South Africa. As part of National Transport month, Engen officially launched the annual programme on October 1. Running for its seventh year, Engen Driver Wellness will reach 19 sites in four provinces during October. Truck drivers in Gauteng were invited to receive free health screenings at Highveld 1 Stop Kempton Park on October 4 and at the Engen Vaal 1 Stop on October 5. Mobile clinics were set up at selected Engen Truck Stops and retail service stations. The screenings are conducted by qualified nurses and councillors and include blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, BMI (body mass index) and HIV/Aids tests. The drivers also receive free meals, caps and water bottles after each assessment. Engen’s Corporate Social In-

Truck driver Paul Maluleke goes through one of the health checks with Sister Sibongelo during the Engen Driver Wellness campaign, at Engen Highveld 1 Stop West, Kempton Park, Johannesburg. vestment manager Adhila Hamdulay said the main aim of this initiative is to improve health through awareness. “Education helps to remind drivers why their health is important and how life choices affect their wellbeing. Ultimately, this increases their health, safety and productivity.”

A clear indication that this intervention is making a difference is the marked increase in the number of individuals using the services. In 2017, 3 217 drivers took advantage of the voluntary health screenings, of whom 44% were found to have some form of concern.

Concerns included being overweight or obese, which accounted for 20% of drivers; 3,5% tested high for glucose levels and cholesterol. Five percent of drivers tested high for blood pressure and three percent screened tested positive for TB. Drivers who tested positive for HIV totalled 6,7%.

Added Hamdulay: “As testing is voluntary, the incremental acceptance of health management as a path to longevity and wellbeing are important indicators that health empowerment is gaining traction. Given the long and lonely hours long-haul drivers spend on the road and the stresses associated with the job, these interventions form a critical pillar of support.” Engen’s focus on health and safety is aligned to its business. Health and safety is entrenched in every aspect of the company’s operations. World-class standards and guidelines govern all of Engen’s practices in this regard and are applied vigorously to ensure operational excellence and best practice. “The Engen’s Driver Wellness campaign continues to have a massive all-round impact for both drivers and their families, who benefit from reduced exposure to diseases and greater longevity of a breadwinner,” said Hamdulay. — WR.

Paris is the fourth city to get car2go car sharing. PHOTO: CAR2GO

CAR2GO ARRIVES IN PARIS AFTER Amsterdam, Stuttgart and Madrid, Paris will become the fourth city in which car2go operates a fully electric fleet of cars. This announcement was made by car2go CEO Olivier Reppert. He launched the global market leader in “flexible carsharing” at last week’s Paris Motor Show. Reppert said Paris will get 400 fully electric smart EQ fortwo cars creating zero local emissions and less congested roads. A recent study by the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology showed that each car2go vehicle on the streets of Berlin replaces up to 15 private cars. The study also indicated that the total number of private car kilometres driven in the city is significantly reduced through the use of car2go vehicles. Reppert reported that, to date, over 400 000 customers have driven over 79 million zero-local-emission kilometres in the all electric cars. — WR.

Hepburn racing heavy metal at Dezzi’s COLIN WINDELL HEAVY metal is heading the way of KZN in the form of the mighty V8 Chev Rekord being driven by veteran racer Willie Hepburn, as the “person of honour”, at the Ford and Friends raceday at Dezzi Raceway, Oslo Beach on October 13. The day celebrates 54 years as a racing driver for Hepburn, who will be bringing his mighty Chev V8 to take on the likes of Daron Gudmanz (Capri V8) and Paolo Cavalieri in the ex-Tony Viana BMW. A contingent of 14 cars from the Border Motorsport Club will be making the trip to Dezzi, including “Flat Out” Radloff in his radical Toyota Corona 2000 GSL and Wayne Botha in his Pinto-engined Ford Escort. The Ford and Friends races are the cherry on top of what will be a serious day of racing as the KZN Road Racing Club championships come down to the wire with just two meetings left for the season and every point vital.

In the Modified Saloon cat-

egory, the one to watch is Class C where Tim Kinsey holds a slender lead over Barry Liggins with Dave Burton hovering in the wings in third place, and both ready to capitalise should Kinsey crack under the pressure. Gona Pillay currently holds the lead in the 300 Master motorcycle series with Desmond

Samuels just 22 points behind. Samuels is determined to make up for the two third places scored at the last meeting at Dezzi where he was beaten by Mark Jansen in both heats — taking a little bit of the pressure off Pillay. In the Super Motards, Hein Etzel has a healthy lead of 78 points over his brother, Karl. It was the latter who won both heats at the last outing and will be determined to repeat the procedure this time around. The full programme includes all the KZN Club classes along with the Retro Racing club joining in the fun alongside the cars from the Ford and Friends category. • Racing starts at 10 am and entrance is R80 per person.
