D-road tamer Dirty driving in a French car arouses the senses ALWYN VILJOEN and SHAY KALIK THE first thing we checked in the 2017 European Car of the Year is whether it had a full size spare wheel. It did, so the second thing we did was to take all five 15-inch alloy wheels out for a bit of dirty driving. We headed to what is arguably to the best-kept tourist secret in Msunduzi — the Karkloof Safari and Spa. On the fast, smooth gravel road past Otto’s Bluff, the electronic stability programme allowed a spirited drive, but any attempt to get the back to step out a bit was met with a firm no from the digital wizardry that pulled the big Peugeot straight as soon as it detected lateral movement. As with most modern cars, the system cannot be fully turned off. Over the corrugations, the rear independent suspension is tuned for a soft ride, which can translate into harder bumps than the much firmer suspension of other cars in this price range. We were heading to a spa not only to get a feel for the Pug’s handling, but also to evaluation of the driver’s seat’s massaging ability. The Peugeot 3008 GT Line can give its driver five types of massages, with three different levels of pressure ranging from “cat’s paws” to “wave”. We asked professional masseuse Saifon Sansuriya, who learned her craft in Thailand, to rate the seat’s abilities. She was not content to just sit in the Peugeot, and instead took us out on a mini game drive to show what Karkloof meant with the “Safari” part of their name. We did not

attempt the 4x4 route to the Karkloof Falls, but stuck to the gravel roads until Sansuriya found a spot to park under the languid gaze of the resident giraffes. There, the cat’s paws on the firm setting really impressed Sansuriya. “This is really nice! People may not want to come to our massage parlour with such a car!” she said. Gizmos inside The massaging seat is not the only sensory delight in this French car. Peugeot’s i-Cockpit in Amplify lights up the head-up digital instrument panel and sends the engine sound through the six speakers “to stimulate the experience on-board”, according the Peugeot. Then there are three fragrances on offer, all developed “to arouse the senses” in collaboration with Scentys and interna-

tionally renowned perfumer and Antoine Lie. The cockpit is dominated by an eight-inch touch-screen, complimented by a 12,3-inch digital instrument display panel in front of the driver. The screen is digital and can be set to display ye olde dials or digital read outs, or the GPS map. Flappy paddles behind the steering wheel integrated controls allows the driver to gear down seamlessly but the electronic automatic transmission is so smooth at one can just let the car get on with choosing the right cog for the moment. A charge pad in the central console allows cellphones with the latest battery tech to recharge while laying on the pad, doing away with all the cables that clutter up a cabin. The refrigerated glove box between the front seats is huge — one can easily fit four two-litre bottles in there, while the gorgeously stitched rear seats are as comfortable as those in front. The only possible improvement Peugeot could make to the rear seats would be to add a recline function. A 12 Volt power socket allows the teens (you would not want toddlers besmirching that pretty stitching) to power those phones that do not recharge on the charge pad.

This is not so a car, but a perfumed massage parlour engineered by a French company so that it will not step out of line when taken for a bit of dirty driving. buyers will look at any big car selling for R519 900. This includes a three-year or 100 000km warranty and a fouryear or 60 000km service plan. At the time of print, the same

money could buy a Ford Ranger 3,2 TDCi Wlldtrack, in auto or 4x4, a Toyota Fortuner 2,8 or VW Tiquan Allspace 1,4 TSI. But none of these offer a scented cockpit that also massages.

Actros ready to move SA

Total plans to power SA

ALWYN VILJOEN THE F1 race car that Lewis Hamilton hurls around with such success and the new Actros truck tractor that MercedesBenz launched on Tuesday have something in common — thousands of hours in a wind tunnel. As result, even the tipper version of the new lorry sports fins and deflectors that would not be out of place in the next Transformers movie. This is not, however, a big-boned American actor truck. According to Merc, the nimble Actros is built to deliver reliable, efficient and above all safe driving. Unlike its predecessor, of which over 25 000 of both the Actros and the outgoing Axor have been sold in South Africa since it was introduced to the market in 1998, the new Actros will exclusively be available as a truck-tractor, in both air and steel suspension. Eight new air-suspended models will initially be available. Four 4x2 air-suspended truck-tractors and four 6x4 airsuspended truck-tractors, and further steel- and air-suspended truck-tractors are to be launched during the second part of the year. The proven but ageing tech of the Axor will be replaced in September by the new Arocs, which is aimed at the rough and tumble rigid distribution, construction, off-road and specialised application markets. Euro 3, OM460 engine Although based on proven technology, the new in-line six-cylinder layout has been optimised and boasts higher torque at lower engine speeds, a broader torque range and optimised auxiliary consumers such as the optimised viscous fan clutch resulting in an impressive overall fuel consumption saving. The new OM460 engine is available in four engine output ratings from 265 kW (360hp) up to 330 kW (450hp) and torque ranging from 1 800 Nm to

forced rims, Jost 38-C 2” heavy duty fifth wheel and cyclone pre-filter. The Pure features the comfortable L-cab StreamSpace 2.3m cabin.

Euro V OM471 engine For fleets that have uninterrupted supply of clean diesel, The OM471 Euro V engine features the latest engine technology and is the most efficient engine in the new range. The high efficiency of the new 12,8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine is achieved by the unique common-rail X-Pulse injection system which has the ability to boost the pressure from 1 160 bar in the common rail system to an injection pressure of up to 2 700 bar in the individual injectors. This enables an extremely fine spray pattern leading to an optimised combustion cycle. The exhaust gases are treated with SCR technology with AdBlue injection to ensure they meet the Euro V emission standards that reduce NOx and particulate matter by up to 90%. The new OM471 engine is available in two engine output ratings of 310kW (420 hp) up to 330 kW (450hp) and

peak torque from 2 100 Nm to 2 200 Nm. Transmission The all-new Actros models are fitted with Mercedes’ Powershift 3 fully automated 12-speed transmissions as standard for fast, correct and precise gear changes. The economy drive programme, standard on all on highway truck-tractors, ensures a particularly economical driving style. ‘Pure’ value The new Actros Pure offers exceptional economy at an exceptional price. It is equipped with the same driveline as the standard model but has a reduced scope of standard equipment to address the customer requirement of having a more basic truck yet still an efficient and safe truck. To this end, a driver airbag and a seat belt monitor are standard safety features on the Pure. The Pure is equipped with steel rein-

‘Fuel’ the economy The new Actros Fuel specification models address the needs of the hazardous goods operator. In addition to being fully ADR and SANS1518 compliant, they feature additional safety features far in excess of the legal requirements. The Actros Fuel features the most comprehensive list of standard safety equipment on offer. In addition to standard safety features already on board the new Actros, the models are further enhanced with Active Brake Assist 4, Proximity Control Assist, Roll Control Assist and a red driver’s seatbelt. Lane Keeping Assist, driver airbag and Stability Control Assist remain standard. The outstanding feature of Active Brake Assist 4 is that it warns the driver of imminent collisions with pedestrians and automatically initiates partial braking. It is the first system of its type worldwide to perform such functions. FleetBoard and Eco Support FleetBoard Eco Support provides effective driver support in real time by displaying tips on a consumption-reducing driving style in the instrument cluster during the journey. Merc’s telemetric systems, FleetBoard and Fleetboard Eco Support, are standard on all new Actros models. Standard warranty The new Actros comes standard with a 1 year/unlimited kilometre complete vehicle warranty and a five-year or 650 000km standard warranty on the drivetrain. At the launch, fleet operators and Maretha Gerber were already structuring deals that ensure buy-back and low interest, which bodes well for the ongoing sale success of the Actros range.

Comment on tyre industry waste management plans MINISTER of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, acting under section 32(5A), read with sections 72 and 73 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008) has given notice to consider four Industry Waste Tyre Management Plans in Government Gazette No. 41612 of May 7, 2018. Waste tyres have been identified as a priority waste stream based on the threat that their indiscriminate disposal poses to the environment. The broad policy direction is to reduce the environmental externalities associated with waste tyres by diverting waste tyres away from landfill and maximising the value extracted from waste tyres as a resource by encouraging re-use, recycling and waste to energy. The plans received are Tyre Waste Abatement & Minimisation Initiative of South Africa (TWAMISA), Evergreen Energy (Pty) Ltd, JPC Energy Systems and South African Tyre Reuse Company (Satruco). The Industry Waste Tyre Management Plans were received for considera-

TOTAL South Africa wants to open hundreds more forecourts to sell crude oil-based fuel, as well as win contracts to supply solar-generated power and liquified gas to the country. Total SA CEO Pierre-Yves Sachet told media during a visit to its bulk fuel and lubricant plants in the Durban harbour the company had over the past year invested R70 million in its grease and oil plant at Island View in the Durban port to improve both quality and efficiencies ahead of expected growth in the lubricant market. At the plant, Total staff blend up to four million litres of oil a month each month, which is sold directly to ships in harbour and exported within the Southern African Development Community region as well as far afield as Madagascar. To grow its 15% market share in SA, Sachet said the company plans to open 20 new service stations in South Africa in the next six months. In the next five years, Sachet said the plan is increase the current 550 station network to 800 stations. This flies in the face of car companies announcing plans to bring out more electric vehicles in the next five years, but Sachet said the crude oil company is monitoring developments in the green energy sector and has made solar a priority investment area for the group. As part of its mission “to supply affordable, reliable and clean energy to as many people as possible”, Total is taking part in the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and Total hopes to be awarded projects to build solar farms and supply liquefied natural gas. Total and SunPower have built the Prieska photovoltaic solar power plant in South Africa. It supplies the equivalent of 75 000 South African homes with electricity (86 MW). As the second largest supplier of liquefied natural gas, Total also sees investment potential in this area. Sachet said Total would resume drilling at its deep-water well, which is 175 km off the KZN coast, by the first quarter of 2019. The low crude oil price in 2014 saw Total, as well as Royal Dutch Shell, put oil exploration off South Africa on hold. — WR.

Demand for used trucks WHILE the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) reported ebbed year on year sales figures in the commercial vehicle segments, a local auctioner noticed an uptick in sales at their auctions in recent months. Head of the assets and recovery division at Park Village Auctions (PVA), LeRoy Augustyn, said prices achieved at last week’s truck auction showed the demand for commercial vehicles has not waned. “Buyers are instead exercising prudence, seeking out quality second-hand assets to offset increased costs,” he said. Prices noted at the auctions saw a 2015 Hyundai HD72 closed-body rigid truck sell for R175 000, while a 2013 UD CW 26-490 curtain side rigid truck sold for R535 000. A 2016 MAN TGS 27-440 truck tractor went for R565 000 while a 2015 Caterpillar 428F backhoe loader sold for R570 000. A 2016 Mercedes-Benz Axor 1823 refuse rigid truck sold for R710 000 and a 2016 Scania R500 LA truck for R950 000. — WR.

Fiesta caps it Small changes add up to big fun in new hatch ALWYN VILJOEN FORD has launched new Fiesta with a totally new cabin but the company kept the 1.0 EcoBoost engine under the hood. As Tracey Delate, general manager of marketing at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa said, the engine has now won the international engine of the year award six times in a row, and there is no need to fix what is not broken. Ford’s frugal 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine also remains unchanged, with either a sixspeed manual or automatic to send power to the front wheels. What has been dropped is the Ambiente entry level. (In its stead, expect a new Figo soon.) Buyers of the new Fiesta will therefore be able to choose from either the Trend or range-topping Titanium. Both have a lot of features, but the design of the

new cabin has reduced the number of buttons on the centre console by almost half. Instead of fiddly knobs, most of the connectivity and entertainment controls are now managed on a 6,5-inch touch-screen, which is fitted as standard on the Trend models; or an 8-inch screen in the Titanium. With the Fiesta Ford’s bestselling passenger car, the changes to the new model are small, like the vehicle being 7cm longer; 1,6 cm more knee room at the back and the wipers clear 13% more of the windscreen. But before your eyes glaze, suffice to say the small changes add up to a totally different drive from older models, both of which colleagues own. This is due to a slightly stiffer body structure, wider stance and lighter steel, as well as torque vectoring and tyres specifically tuned for the Fiesta, according to

Sigurd Limbach, who helped engineer the set-up. The turning circle is a best-inclass 10,05 metres kerb to kerb and Ford’s spec sheet states the new Fiesta chassis offers 10% more grip in corners, while braking distances at 100 km/h are reduced by more than eight percent. We tested all these stats during one of the many weekly protests at the Fiesta’s launch in the North West when it looked like the angry citizens wanted to stone the passing cars. When not evading the stone throwing mobs, one can get very comfy in the Fiesta. Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system gives the driver voice control of the audio, navigation and connected smartphones. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay, with Android Auto in the process of being licensed

The new Fiesta has an all new cabin and handles a bit better than the outgoing models, thanks to incremental changes to the chassis, body and tyres. Lexus has launched the LS 500, a luxury sedan selling for R2 141 400. This cruise ship for the road comes with a seven-year or 105 000km warranty and a full maintenance plan. Service intervals are 15 000km or once a year. Lexus said the new 3.5-litre V6 engine makes 310kW and 600Nm of torque at 6000rpm, which rivals the power from the outgoing V8. ensuring a sub-5 second 0-100 km/h dash, whlle airsuspension ensures the occupants feel no bumps PHOTO: MOTORPRESS

NOW AT JAGUAR PIETERMARITZBURG

Renault has launched the Sandero Stepway Plus, selling for R206 900. Powered by Renault’s proven three-cylinder, 900cc petrol engine (66kW and 135Nm from 2 500 rpm). The limited edition model comes with side airbags, front and rear power windows, electric side mirrors, leather steering wheel and gear knob and rear park assist, cruise control and satnav, while leather seats are an option. A five-year or 150 000km warranty and two-year or 30 000km service plan are included. Service intervals are 15 000km.

Beauty that leaves this much of an impression can only come from sculpting every contour by hand and eye. Taking cues from the stunning F-TYPE sports car, the F-PACE continues the grace and dynamism evident throughout decades of Jaguar design. This is captured in a sporting profile, sleek lines, powerful rear haunches and a tapered roof line. Together they realise a reduction in wind noise and CO2 emissions, while increasing high speed stability and driver confidence. The F-PACE. A car that sticks to the road and stays in the mind.

However, the star of the day was Devin Robertson who was majestic in the way in which he dominated the three heats of the National Championship Inex Legends racing series at the raceway, including setting the fastest lap in each outing. In the first heat he came from the second row of the grid to win overall by a shade more than nine seconds from Jason Loosemore with Justin Robertson a further five seconds back in third place and ahead of Richard Upton and Richard van Heerden. The second race was more of the same with the current SA National Champion and former World Champion powering his Big Boss Auto car around the right and twisty Dezzi circuit seemingly oblivious of the corners. Loosemore, in second place, came a bit closer and trailed by only eight seconds at the finish with Van Heerden geeting the better of Upton this time to claim third spot. Team Mean Machines, which finished second, also completed 129 laps, but amassed only 161 points compared to the 170 of the winning team. Led by Lawrence Smith (Porsche) with Nick Rizzato (Yamaha 600) and Etienne Terblanche (KTM 450) providing the bike attack, the two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the day — although they did not know how close it was. Organisers announced the points gap regularly, but kept the team names secret until the prize-giving. Third place went to “1st 1st” comprising Ronald van Rensburg (VW Golf), Shaun du Preez (KTM 390) and Alistair Caldwell (Honda 450) and they completed 128 laps to amass 151 points for the day. The concept also provided an opportunity to pit father and son against each other with Sanjiv Singh (DblApx Kawasaki 1000) in the Unlucky For Some team with 10-yearold Lee Singh (Honda 150) appearing for the Green Mamba team. CROSS country enthusiasts in Botswana are already planning for the annual Desert Race in Jwaneng, Botswana, from June 22 to 24. Dominated by the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA team in the FIA class, who are unbeaten in the Desert Race since 2011 when Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst won in a NWM Ford Ranger, the Gazoo racers will be chased by Visser in the Atlas Copco Toyota Hilux, along with high profile drivers like Johan van Staden (Elf Renault Duster), former Class T champion Jason Venter (4x4 Mega World ARB Toyota Hilux), the RedLined Nissan Navara entries and Mark Corbett (Century Racing CR6). A significant addition to the FIA Class entry could see Dakar Rally hero Hennie de Klerk make his first ap-

pearance of the season. De Klerk and co-driver Achim Bergmann won last year’s Dakar Challenge at the Toyota 1000 Desert Race, along with a free entry to the Dakar Rally, where De Klerk and Gerhard Schutte finished 28th and won the rookie award. Class T, for vehicles with engines not exceeding 5020 cc and a solid rear axle suspension sees the intense rivalry between current champions Johan and Werner Horn (Malalane Toyota Hilux), and the Ford NWM team with the Pietermaritzburg crew Lance Woolridge and Ward Huxtable currently leading the championship. The iconic race will also preserve its international flavour. Dubai crew Thomas Bell and Patrick McMurren will be out in a Red-Lined Nissan Navara, with the Brazilian crew Marcos Baumgart and Kleber Cincea having another taste of Kalahari conditions in Ford NWM colours.
