MOST tickets for the first Monster Jam in South Africa, which roars off at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on April 20, have been sold despite the hefty price tags. The show will feature eight of the world’s most famous 4,5 ton Monster Jam trucks doing backflips, vertical two-wheel skills and racing at speeds of up to 110 km per hour to produce spectacular motor-sport action. The show starts at 6 pm, with a pit party at R150 per ticket from 1 pm to 3 pm. Pit party tickets are limited and available only with an event ticket. Organisers warn fans against buying any Monster Jam tickets from

scalpers at the stadium: “There are significant risks in buying from other sources and entry to a Monster Jam event is not guaranteed if you do so.”

THE Natal Off Road Motor Club hosts Round 1 of the regional off road races at New Hanover on Saturday. Co-organiser Jarrod Blackman invited drivers who want to race socially to check out the action and then join the new social class in Round 2 in any vehicle with high ground clearance. “If you haven’t raced before we will assign you a club mentor and get you on track,” said Blackman. Mitsubishi launched the new Triton in Gauteng yesterday and it goes even better than it looks, with the proven 2,4-litre turbo diesel and six-speed transmissions, either a new auto or the proven manual. The engine makes 133 kW at 3 500 rpm and 430 Nm from 2 500, and can pull a 3,1 ton braked trailer. Four models are on offer, with very competitive prices starting at R509 995 for the 4x2 manual and topping out at R589 995 for the 4x4 auto with all the trimmings. PHOTO: QUICKPIC

SA-TRAINED RACERS IN NEW W-SERIES

TWO women racers who learned their craft as karters in South Africa, Tasmin Pepper (left) and Naomi Schiff, have emerged in the final 18 for the inaugural all-female W-Series. Pepper finished second in the overall Polo Cup last year and won the Masters. Belgium-born Schiff grew up in South Africa. She lives in Germany and races professionally in Europe.

Selling trust Vehicle dealers told to use trust to combat fake news DEALER principals and key operational staff from vehicle dealerships all over South Africa heard how to combat the digital dictators of social media with good old-fashioned trust at the National Automobile Dealers’ Association Dealer Performance Conference recently. “Now in its fourth year, the conference provides a platform for like-minded industry experts and retail dealerships to participate in dialogue through relevant and challenging topics that have a direct impact on their businesses,” said Mark Dommisse, national chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers’ Association. This year’s first conference was themed “Automotive Retailing 2020: Dealership performance for the next decade”, and aimed to equip dealers with the tools and knowledge they need to deal with the shifting grounds on which they operate. Renowned entrepreneur, digital guru and corporate adviser Michael Cowen, co-founder of What’s the Future (WTF), posed the question: “How do we make tomorrow better? Cowen said the biggest unseen disruptor in today’s environment is that of trust. He said social media especially is no longer trusted; fake news is a daily occurrence. Large corporate institutions are being questioned and we are faced with digital dictators in the form of Facebook on a daily basis. Cowen advised dealers to embrace disruption but, importantly, to create an environment of trust in their businesses. “We are moving into a peer-topeer trust economy and our businesses need to build for trust in the digital age.

“Understand and focus on your customer’s why, continually test and reduce your customer experience friction — both digital and non-digital. And importantly build trust, or go bust,” Cowen said. Meanwhile, new vehicle sales continued their slide downward as the first quarter drew to a close. While March 2018 sales were relatively robust, March 2019 industry sales ended on 47 718 units, 3,1% down year on year, according to the National Automobile Association of South Africa (Naamsa). The weakening rand and overall shadow of possible ratings agency downgrades didn’t help March new vehicle sales as consumer and business confidence continued to come under pressure. “Household budgets also continue to take strain as a result, directly impacting demand for new vehicles as motorists continue to hold onto their vehicles for longer,” said Ghana Msibi, WesBank executive head of motor. Additional fuel price increases in April will continue to contribute to this burden, as will the continued impact and threat of load shedding. “At least interest rates remained unchanged, providing some small form of relief for consumers,” said Msibi. “WesBank data shows a slowly shifting trend away from fixed rate deals — good finance practice in a low-interest rate environment — towards linked deals, although linked deals remain the majority. “With interest rates unlikely to decline in the short term, the opportunity to fix rates in your finance contract remains.” — Wheels Reporter.
