A PARENT-TEEN DRIVING CONTRACT
BARLOWORLD DRIVERS COMPETE
MD of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, has drafted a parent-teen driving contract to protect teenage drivers from dangerous behaviour during the vacation. “Rather than becoming that nagging voice that your teen tunes out, a driving contract presents another way to emphasise the dangers. Rather than
just hoping that your teen driver will remain safe, take proactive steps to try and ensure this. While you can never guarantee that something will not happen, you can do your best to equip your teen to reman safe on the road,” said Herbert. For more information, e-mail info@masterdrive.co.za. — WR.

Barloworld Transport yesterday held its annual Driver of the Year competition at Golden Horse Casino, where 54 drivers gathered to test their skills in manoeuvring a truck and two-axle trailer through a series of narrow obstacles, including reversing, all against the clock. Their aim was to win the grand prize and the title of ‘Driver of the Year 2019’. The competition ended with a gala dinner and awards ceremony last night, where Barloworld’s senior and executive managers recognised the top drivers for their achievements and contribution to the business. Project manager at Barloworld Jordyn Grenfel said the competing drivers, which included six women, represented the top three percent of some 1 500 drivers working in eight business units across South Africa. Barloworld Transport uses DriveSmart telemetrics to monitor driver skills in five key areas, including defensive driving and speed management. The drivers are held accountable for their standard of driving and use their telemetric results to hone their skills and, more importantly, develop the right attitude. The truckers said if they could ask for one gift from motorists over the festive season, it would be for passenger car drivers not to nip in front of trucks and then slow down. Apart from ruining their good statistics, such inconsiderate motorists create very dangerous situations because trucks take much longer to slow down than cars. Barloworld Transport trucks are all equipped with dash cams that record such incidents and prove the driver’s innocence but the truckers’ plea is for impatient drivers to change their attitude, slow down, and focus on making the journey the destination. Electric Lexus shows Toyota’s abilities; first ‘green’ beer delivery in U.S. ALWYN VILJOEN WHILE Tesla’s stainless steel bakkie took headlines — and over 200 000 orders — since its reveal last Thursday, two other under-the-radar developments promise to have much bigger impacts on the future of transport. The first development came from Toyota, the world’s biggest vehicle builder. While the green media in the U.S. have been criticising the Japanese corporation for making dated hybrids and sticking to hydrogen fuel cells while it waits for electric car demand to grow, Toyota Motor Corporation last week launched the first all-electric Lexus, the UX 300e, at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China. The UX 300e has a single 150 kW motor mounted on the front axle, with a 54,4 kWh lithium-ion battery that
American brewing company AnheuserBusch has made its first zero emission delivery of beer using Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell truck (left) and BYD’s all electric truck (right). Lexus said gives the big SUV a range of 400 km. Contrary to critics, the UX300e shows Toyota’s engineers are indeed ready to sell electric cars where tax subsidies spur buyer demand.
TRUCKING BEER IN THE USA In St Louis, Missouri, American brewing company Anheuser-Busch teamed up with American start-up Nikola Motor Company and Chinese BYD Motors
LLC to make the brewer’s first zeroemission delivery. One of Nikola’s hydrogen-electric trucks delivered the beer to a depot, whence a BYD electric truck took crates of beer to the a sports
arena. The brewing company has ordered 800 hydrogen trucks from Nikola Motors, and has also started a pilot project to deliver beer using 21 BYD electric trucks in California, with the trucks to be charged via a 958,5 kW solar array, instead of polluting coalburning electricity plants. BYD’s buses and trucks now run in over 300 cities in 50 countries, where the Chinese company gets orders simply by showing fleet owners how electric vehicles cost less on the long run.
