Prints charming His bohemian sensibility and contemporary ethnic aesthetic has made celebrity-loved designer

Matthew Williamson King of the boho chic set

Well-known for creating a whole new genre in the late ’90s – the, luxury boho look – British designer Matthew Williamson gave birth to the Ibiza-chic crowd, with Kylie Minogue, Keira Knightley, Jade Jagger and his ultimate muse and good friend, Sienna Miller, adorning themselves in his fresh ethnic dressing. “The Matthew girl is bohemian and wouldn’t mind going to Ibiza” he once said, defining the DNA of his brand as ‘bright colours, bold prints and embellishment’. His debut collection in 1997 at London Fashion Week, following work experience at Marni and Monsoon, quickly positioned Williamson’s signature look: dreamy, flowing maxi dresses with bold prints, vibrant hues and embellishments like beads and jewellery. It was this unique collection of bright, intricately detailed pieces that defined the now recognisable Williamson aesthetic, cementing his reputation as a fresh and innovative designer. From showing at New York Fashion Week to becoming creative director of Pucci and being awarded the Red Carpet Design of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, he became a force to be reckoned with. In 2008, he created a capsule collection for high street chain H&M; launched a collection called Butterfly by Matthew Williamson for Debenhams; a bridal line for Net-a-Porter; and recently launched a menswear line and line of wedding dresses. He is also launching a younger, diffusion line, Muse by Matthew Williamson, Matthew Williamson WITH SIENNA MILLER for Fall/Winter 2011.

Q&A

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON How would you describe the Matthew Williamson woman? She’s strong, individual and feminine. She’s independent and freespirited, not afraid of adventure or excitement. She’s as much at home in an urban city environment as she is barefoot on a beach. What valuable experiences did you have at Marni and Pucci? When working for other design houses, you have to consider their heritage in order to retain their brand DNA in new collections you’re designing. I was creative director at Pucci for three years, during which time I studied Emilio Pucci’s archives and designed prints and silhouettes which I felt were respectful to the brands’ core aesthetic whilst introducing modernity and a fresh direction. Which designers have inspired/influenced you and your work? I grew up worshipping British ’70s designers such as Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes. I loved their unabashed flamboyant designs and use of colour and print. When I was at Central St Martins I was lucky enough to get a work placement at Zandra Rhodes’ studio and some pieces from my graduate collection were actually made using excess fabric trimmings I collected from the floor there. You have a strong signature aesthetic. How would you describe it and do you believe this is how fashion brands survive? Key characteristics of my brand are bright colours, bold prints, embellishment and attention to detail. Another important part of my aesthetic has always been an element of juxtaposition of contrasting elements such as nature and the synthetic, vintage and modern. I try to retain these qualities in every collection and firmly believe it’s essential to a brand to have a strong DNA. I’m very lucky to have a loyal base of customers who love the Matthew Williamson signature look and allow me to stay true to my aesthetic.

ALL ABOUT MATTHEW • During his 10th anniversary show at LFW in 1997, legendary artist Prince gave an exclusive performance, and Prince also opened his 2008 Spring/Summer show. • Williamson opened his award-winning flagship store in Mayfair, London, in 2004, his first US flagship store in New York in 2009, followed by The Dubai Mall store. • In 2005, Williamson launched his own perfume range. • Williamson made a guest appearance on season 7 of Project Runway in 2010. • Williamson counts celebrities Bjork, Cat Deeley, Sienna Miller, Kelis, Jade Jagger and Plum Sykes among his friends.

SPRING SUMMER 2011 The Spring/Summer 2011 tropicallycoloured collection Ð built around the idea of a shipwrecked maiden and her weather-worn Western wardrobe Ð is tribal meets safari with corseted high-waisted pants, hand-embroidered bodycon dresses and mini skirts in camels, khakis and mustards, while taffeta and silver embellishment gave the pieces his signature ethnic vibe. Intricate hand-beading and handcraft detailing still reigned supreme, with tons of bang on-trend fringing and electric-coloured peacock feathers.

Why did you choose Dubai for your third standalone outlet? We already had a strong presence in Dubai as Matthew Williamson is in a number of stockists there, plus there was an increasing number of Dubai-based women shopping in my flagship store in London, so it made sense to open a store here. I think the Dubai style resonates very well with my own aesthetic of colour, print and embellishments. My Escape range of kaftans particularly appeals to the Dubai woman. What inspired your Spring/Summer 2011 collection? This collection was inspired by the journey of a chic city girl, who becomes shipwrecked on a beach. The collection includes some tailoring elements suitable as urban staples, but also hints towards this marooned environment in parachute dresses, rope macramé detailing, feathers and tassels. Will your line of wedding dresses be available in Dubai? Yes, I’m thrilled that key pieces from the bridal collection will be available in the Dubai store mid-summer. Expect ethereal ivory gowns in softly draped luxurious fabrics with ornate detailing for both the contemporary and classic bride. What can we look forward to for Fall/Winter 2011? Quilted biker leather pants and skirts, oversized blanket wraps and coats, Mongolian wool gilets and trims of leopard print fur. The colour palette of monochrome, camel, watermelon and strawberry, with graphic, kaleidoscopic prints, is offset with bold sequins, ostrich feathers and statement beading. It’s not new – in fact, last year it reigned supreme – but like all trends that span multiple seasons, it has evolved.

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON S/S 2011

Enter the maxi dress, that all-flattering, ultraversatile summer wardrobe staple that can look both laid-back and luxurious and can be dressed up or down. This season, the maxi has had a makeover, with designers – think Emilio Pucci and Matthew Williamson – showcasing a super-feminine, soft, floaty maxi in billowy chiffons and sheer fabrics that flutter and flow, providing a perfect partner to summer’s hot months. Partially sheer maxis as seen at Marc Jacobs and Alberta Ferretti are a huge trend, while slash-front skirts – channel the ontrend ’70s vibe.

Further influenced by ’70s styling, this season’s maxis have gone to floor-sweeping lengths and feature retro floral prints, bold patterns, pretty pleats and lots of chiffon layering, while romantic antique-style fabrics and details like broderie anglaise, lace, macramé and crochet (think D&G) bring back the boho days. Pair with platform sandals, layers of bangles and a wide-brimmed hat for effortless daytime dressing this summer. As part of the retro vibe, the focus is also on the neckline, with jewelled and embellished collars the order of the day, while the halter-neck maxi dress took centrestage – some halter necks doing double-duty as a piece of jewellery, too. Marc Jacobs led the way with halter neck, chiffon maxis in shades of burnt orange and fuchsia with oversized floral appliqués. Vibrant colours adorned dresses, with statement shades of orange, pink and blue perfect for pairing with a summer tan. Muted nudes and pastels also shone at Alberta Ferretti, while bold prints – from animal to pop art – were splashed across chiffon dresses, bringing bohemian to new heights.

What was the inspiration behind the boutique? Dubai was just beginning to boom, and although the high-end brands were available, there was a real hunger for contemporary brands, up-and-coming designers and fresh, local talent. What is S*uce’s style philosophy? S*uce stands for unique style, a constant desire for experimentation and a relentless attention to detail. S*uce pieces are always about that extra element that sets designs apart. Everything in store is handpicked - we follow no rules or guidelines, just our hearts. S*uce transcends age – it’s all about a philosophy of fun. Which designers are you loving right now? I’m loving Tata Naka because we’ve just celebrated a 10-year retrospective of the designer. We’ve been supporting them since the very start and it’s been wonderful to see them grow. Every collection is always so unique, fresh and fun. They never disappoint. What are your bestselling brands? Tata Naka, Preen, Etoile by Isabelle Marant, Sugar Vintage and Mary Katrantzou. We choose contemporary brands that we love and local designers we believe in.

BLUE SILK KAFTAN WITH FLOWER APPLIQUÉS, SUGAR VINTAGE COUTURE, AED1,805

Any new designers coming onboard? Yes! We’re super-excited about new brands Joanna K, Fake London, Khoon Hooi and Citrus coming soon. Fake London is famous for its iconic use of the Union Jack and British Bulldog emblems – the brand is punky, quirky and quintessentially English. Khoon Hooi is known for embracing a modern silhouette – they mix things up with their whimsical, romantic approach. S*uce, Level 1

Designers at S*uce Tata Naka Signature pieces from these Georgian twins were a regular on hit series Sex in the City. Granted the ‘New Generation’ award at London Fashion Week, the brand has become a successful independent UK design house. Etoile by Isabel Marant This Parisian designer blends relaxed tailoring with bohemian detailing for the ultimate in Rive Gauche chic.

ONE-PIECE WONDER From Boho casual to Studio 54 glamour, jumpsuits are the season’s on-trend tribute to’70s styling

NEW LOOK S/S 2011

With ’70 ’70s styling hot stuff on the Spring/Summer runways, it’s no surprise that the full-length slouchy onesie has been resurrected. Echoing both the decade’s glamorous side – think New York Studio 54 style – and its more casual bohemian vibe, jumpsuits this season are streamlined but relaxed, offering both daytime functionality and nighttime chic. Not only does the carefree onesie offer an easy-to-pull-together emsemble, it can also be highly flattering, providing you with the illusion of mile-long legs. The casual version for day is breezy, laid-back and channels a boho chic vibe, some in earth tones and utilitarian and others with bold ethnic prints or florals.Fashioned in cotton, jersey, chiffon and even denim, look for loose fabrics, wide legs and either belted or with a gathered waist. Pair with a slouchy bag (fringing is optional), platforms - or Oxford booties for tapered or harem jumpsuits – and plenty of ethnic jewellery.

Drawing inspiration from Studio 54 for evening glamour, a number of designers – think Gucci, Louis Vuitton, YSL and Marc Jacobs – reinvented the onesie for night using bold, colours and slinky fabrics showed the chicest option – a masculine aesthetic - in an all-black belted halter number, while Gucci delivered glamorous colour-blocked silk styles. Simplicity is key – this statement piece pairs well with bold lips, glossy platforms, a gold belt, statement cuff and jeweled clutch. For novice jumpsuit wearers, there are plenty of casual and chic options on the High Street. Reiss, River Island and Wallis are offering up silk evening numbers in bold purples and pinks, while Gerard Darel has a relaxed day-to-evening ’70s-inspired number in a variety of block colours and patterns. Koton, M&S, New Look and Topshop have also churned out retro onesies in utilitarian styles and playful floral designs.

ROYAL REFLECTIONS THE WORLD'S OLDEST JEWELLERY HOUSE GARRARD FUSES ITS ROYAL ROOTS WITH MODERN DESIGN

Credited with being the oldest jewellery house in the world, Garrard of London has long been recognised as a leading jeweller to the world’s royalty. Synonymous with combining innovative and cutting-edge design with renowned craftsmanship and the traditions of its distinctly modern heritage, this avant-garde brand today offers a number of distinctive and iconic collections, from the Regal and Hummingbird collections to the Wings and Feathers collections. Founded by master goldsmith George Wickes in 1722, Garrard’s royal legacy dates back to 1735, when it was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince Wales, before being honoured with the title of Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843. It has since served six successive monarchs and has created and maintained the ‘Crown Jewels’, including the Imperial Corwn of India worn by King George V and a magnificent crown, set with the famous ‘Koh-i-Noor Diamond’ (the largest diamond in the world) for H. M. Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother). More recently, Garrard created Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring, now worn by Prince William’s new bride Kate Middleton.

Garrard has created and maintained the ‘Crown Jewels’, including the Imperial Corwn of India worn by King George V and a magnificent crown, set with the famous ‘Koh-i-Noor Diamond’ But it’s not just royalty this luxurious jeweller attracts – celebrities, too, are drawn to Garrard by its opulent yet cutting-edge designs. From Hilary Swank and Angelina Jolie who have worn Garrard jewels to the Oscars, to celebrity fans Cheryl Cole, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Campbell and Blake Lively, who have been spotted in Garrard’s modern and iconic motifs from the Wings and Feathers collections. The iconic Wings Collection, both dazzling and contemporary, represents peace, purity and protection and was inspired by the wings of an angel. The collection includes a Pave black diamond and white gold ring, a cuff set in white gold with pave diamonds and white gold and pave diamond hoop earrings. The Feathers collection meanwhile – designed by Georgina Chapman, the co-founder of A-list design label Marchesa – is inspired by Garrard’s archives. This whimsical collection features a heavy peacock feather motif and jewel tones, accented with dazzling rows of diamonds, and includes the much sought-after Feather ring, fashioned from silver, amethyst and white diamonds. THE FIRST BEAUTY COMPANY TO USE 100 PERCENT PURE PLANT EXTRACTS, CLARINS HAS MASTERED THE MERGING OF SCIENCE WITH NATURE

These days, it’s not unusual for beauty companies to deliver effective products utilising plant-based ingredients. In the 1950s however, it was considered unfashionable. But thanks to the experimentation of medical student, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, the plant world began to play a part in daily beauty. Armed with a philosophy of taking ‘beauty seriously’, French cosmetics company Clarins was born in 1954 and what began with a few simple botanical body oils ballooned into a company that’s now the European leader in skincare products. Staying true to its original philosophy, this family-run beauty house offers a range of plant-based skincare,

make-up, suncare, and tanning products, as well as fragrances. Expert at fusing the wonders of nature with the modern-day science, Clarins has pioneered revolutionary skincare change. Clarins was the first skincare company to incorporate an anti-pollution complex into a day cream, the first to develop a facial contouring product, and the first to create a product designed to protect skin from atmospheric pollution. Its products are well-known not only for being targeted (it has a huge range of targeted cleansers and face treatment oils) but for incorporating skincare ingredients into every product: from the iconic Eau Dynamisante, the first fragrance with skin treatment benefits, to the Limited Edition Rouge Hydra Nude, the first lipstick formula to boast some 25 percent skincare ingredients. Clarins make-up, inspired by the runway, is also rich in natural botanicals. Spring’s Neo Pastels collection offers a range of subtle pastels for a subtle romantic look, while its summer collection splashes blue on eyes and glossy corals and pinks on lips for a hot summer sensation.

The skin is the focus – polished glow with bronzed highlights. When using bronzer, always apply tinted moisturiser or a skin-perfecting product like Guerlain Terracotta Healthy Glow Foundation. It perfects skin, while illuminating it with a subtle glow. Stand under a bright light and apply where the light hits – the high parts of the face like the apple of the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead and collar bone. Try Bourjois’ Delice de Soleil Mineral Bronzing Foundation – a two-in-one compact for all skin tones, which blends easily for a velvety finish. Alternatively, Too Faced’s Peach Leopard Brightening Bronzer offers easy-to-blend warming shades for a bronzed tropical glow. Or opt for a cake bronzer like MAC’s WonderWoman Mineralise Skin Finish as it’s easier to control the pigment intensity. Don’t forget the body - try Inglot’s Body Sparkle for a dazzling look.

The eyes

To enhance that golden glow, opt for metallics on eyes, ideally with some shimmer, as matte lids don’t jive with this look. Go for anchor eye colours like gold, ebony, bronze and silver. Try a gold like YSL’s Ombre Solo in No 15 or opt for a wet-look silver like Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream in Steel. For a more muted yet still shimmery look, try Une’s 100 percent natural Glimmer Eyes Shadow. Whatever your anchor colour, add some copper to give nighttime intensity. Revlon’s Satin Eyeshadow in Nude Slip has just enough coppery shimmer. Finish by smudging black or dark brown kohl around the eyes for a siren effect.

METALLIC GOLD SHADOW, AVAILABLE AT BEAUTY COUNTERS, AED118

MAC GOLD GLITTER, AVAILABLE AT MAC, LEVEL 1 AED105

The lips & nails

Lips should be neutral but super-glossy, so opt for a gloss in summer’s pink or coral tones. Dab YSL’s super-shiny Golden Gloss in No 43 or try Revlon’s Lipgloss in Coral. For night, choose something with flecks of gold and sparkle. Go for nude nails during the day and a glossy bronze or metallic gold for night. Try Illamasqua’s Bacterium, a chip-resistant shade of pearlescent ochre, which will make your tan shimmer. 82Ñ83

There are more than 70 role play options and if kids don’t want to earn KidZos, they can spend them in a number of true-to-life situations.
