Take

The city of the black jaguar

Three

If Chichén Itzá and Tulum intrigued you then perhaps a visit to the archaeological site of Ek Balam is in order. The site is currently being excavated and is posing many questions for archaeologists. Even its name: “Ek Balam” or “star jaguar” in Maya (star/black is ek, jaguar is balam) is enigmatic. The city flourished between A.D. 250-1200 and the mix of artistic and architectural styles visible at the site reflects the cultural and trade links it forged with other city-states in the region. Not all of them were peaceful neighbors it seems as the ceremonial heart of the city is walled, probably for defensive purposes. Ek Balam's crowning glory is the Acropolis and its upper facade features hieroglyphics, masks and a mysterious “winged figure” known as “el angel” by local people (see photo, left). To find out more about “the angel,” actually the stucco figure of an ancient ruler, plan a trip with Thomas Moore. Ek Balam is a 30-minute drive north of the colonial city of Valladolid in the neighboring state of Yucatán. The excursion includes a guided tour of the site, lunch in an old hacienda and a sightseeing stop in Valladolid.

Touring the Yucatán with Thomas Moore Travel Thomas Moore Travel has something for everyone whether it's a trip to one of the Yucatan's worldfamous archaeological sites, a day at a nature park, a dolphin swim or a cruise to one of Cancún's sister islands. They'll take you diving, snorkeling and fishing and when it comes to family fun, they have some great ideas. Check www.royalresorts.com for a look at all the options available, prices, what's included, departure days and times. You can book your tours online and here are three very different trips to get you started.

Mérida is a must If you haven't visited Mérida, capital of the neighboring state of Yucatán, why not plan a trip during your next vacation? Take a break from the fast-paced ambiance of Cancún and experience the provincial charm, colorful traditions and warm hospitality of this gracious old city. For Mérida is indeed old, it was founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Montejo, on the ruins of a much earlier Mayan capital called T'ho. Indeed, when you look closely at the huge Cathedral on the main square, you can see ancient Mayan carvings on some of the stones. Colonial churches and 19th-century civic buildings vie for attention in the city center's streets and leafy plazas while the opulent belle époque mansions lining Paseo Montejo boulevard are testimony to the wealth of local estate

8 Tips before you travel

owners during the henequen boom, the age of the plant Yucatecans once called oro verde or green gold. Yet there is more to Mérida than architectural splendor, the city boasts an interesting collection of museums and galleries and its inhabitants are immensely proud of their music, art and cuisine. Guitar-strumming trios stroll through the squares calling in at open-air restaurants to serenade diners with the romantic local ballads called trova and there's a different concert or cultural event every night. To cap it all, the main square and surrounding streets are closed to traffic on Sundays for Mérida en Domingo, an all-day gala of music and dance, handicraft and art exhibitions. Tempted? Thomas Moore Travel offers a 2-day excursion to Mérida, with accommodation at the El

Castellano hotel, a Mérida City Tour, a trip to the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal and a lunch stop in the colonial town of Izamal on the return journey to Cancún. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996, Uxmal is a Mayan masterpiece. The carvings decorating the Magician's Pyramid, Nun's Quadrangle and Palace of the Governor are testimony to the skill of the city's long-lost artists. After a guided tour of the site, you'll stay on for dinner and the nightly Light & Sound show. Uxmal seen by the light of the moon and stars is unforgettable. Contact Thomas Moore Travel for further details and reservations. Mérida is the gateway to a world of natural and historical attractions and private trips can also be arranged if you would like to stay longer.

Snorkel heaven Pencil in some snorkeling time during your next Cancún vacation. The water is warm and crystal-clear and it won't be long before you have a close encounter with some very curious and colorful fish. The world's second longest reef hugs the Mexican Caribbean coast, running south into Belize and the Bay of Honduras and luckily for us, many of the coral formations lie in shallow and sheltered waters. Marine life is abundant along the reef, over 400 species of fish have been identified and 70 varieties of coral inhabit this strange and colorful world. You may not find that famous little orange cartoon fish, but you'll see parrot and angelfish, blue tangs, sergeant majors, barracudas and even the occasional sea turtle. Thomas Moore Travel will take you snorkeling to the reefs of Puerto Morelos, the caleta or natural inlet of Xel-Ha and its smaller and much less crowded cousin, Yalku, and you can even charter a boat and escape fellow swimmers on your own snorkeling adventure. If you can swim you can snorkel and you and your family will soon feel right at home in masks and flippers. Once you catch your first glimpse of life on the reef you may well be hooked, and if you are, diving classes are the next step. So, go ahead, take the plunge!
