Additionally, out of the total 1,490 new enrollees, the majority registered in the School of Engineering, Architecture, and Fine Arts (SEAFA), with a significant count of 416 freshmen (11.02%).

Pimentel, Hontiveros quiz about OVP’s 2024 budget
Few questions were raised from the minority bloc, Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel and Deputy Senate Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros putting the screws on Office of the Vice President (OVP) 2024 P500 million request of Confidential and Intelligence Funds (CIF).
It was highlighted that the requested fund is bigger than the confidential funds of the Department of National Defense (DND) and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) which are included in the approved proposed 2024 budget of P2.3 Billion.
More so, Hontiveros quickly queried Vice President Sara Duterte about the specifics of the requested funds, inquiring
about the subjects of the OVP intelligence gathering operations and how it will threaten the projects of the OVP.
“Ano po ba ‘yung magiging subjects ng OVP intelligence gathering operations? Ano ang mga intensyon at capabilities ng mga subjects na ito na kailangan ng OVP ng intelligence on these?
At paano nitong mga subjects tine-threaten ang operations ng OVP?”, Hontiveros interrogated.
Duterte replied by saying that the funds will be used for “safe, secure, and successful implementation” of OVP projects.
However, Pimentel buzzed VP Sara Duterte about the P125 Million CIF used in 2022, a year that was divided for both Duterte and her predecessor Former Vice President Leni Robredo.
“There was no item for confidential expenses in 2022, so it’s not even P1. It’s zero. It’s not even mentioned in the line item budgeting for OVP. And yet at year-end, we have now an entry of P125 million charged to a line item that did not exist at the beginning,”
Pimentel said.
Stated on the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA), there is no line item for Confidential Funds under the OVP which was crafted by Robredo’s office. Additionally, Robredo has never requested such funds.
Duterte, on the other hand, confirmed and assured that she can live without confidential funds but will have more flexibility with the said funds.
Unfortunately, the senate budget hearing was then cut short as Senators Bong Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada moved to end the session despite unfinished questions about 2022 OVP CIF.

SEAFA and SBHTM secure victory
In the wake of the controversial initial DWCC Halalan 2023 which resulted in zero elected candidates for the School of Engineering, Architecture, and Fine Arts (SEAFA) and School of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management (SBHTM), both schools have been granted a chance at redemption through a re-election due to multiple petitions received.
Notably, SEAFA claimed an impressive 79.92% voters’ turnout, displaying a significant increase from the previous election. Out of 1,325 voters, a resounding 1,059 students cast their votes which resulted in every single aspiring officer to have achieved the required 50% + 1 vote, reflecting a strong rebound for the said school.
Likewise, SBHTM managed to collect the trust of their student body after they gained a 79.34% (818/1031 students) voters’ turnout which pushed them to all be elected to their position.
“At the end of the day, it is still our heart and passion to serve that helped us stand even in our downfall,” Marren Escalona, president of SEAFA, said.
Razzcell Manalo, president of SBHTM, pointed that the reelection journey was undeniably challenging and gathering the majority’s support for another election posed significant difficulties since they are one of the biggest schools in terms of number of students.
All officers of the said schools were proclaimed and took their oath on the same day through a Zoom meeting led by the DWCC Student Electoral Board (SEB).

Unmasking the Spiritual Mirage of Deceit
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
Matthew 7:15
Leaping through the fine, fragile line between faith and deception, where spiritual leaders wield the supreme power as both Messiah and authoritarian figure, the moral landscape reveals the stark realities of abuse of power and manipulative power dynamics. New religious movements often transform wolves into sheep’s clothing to cloak exploitation in the context of religion and idolatry.
At the heart of this narrative, the sacred trust is bestowed upon two emblematic figures, Apollo Carreon Quiboloy and Jey Rence Quilario, both worshipped
and loved for their ventures beyond ‘sacredness’. Having mastered the convergence of faith and manipulation, such leaders navigate a dangerous game of deception among their followers to satisfy whatever human pleasures that are left inside their authoritarian and egotistic hearts. How evil do you have to be to weaponize and pervert faith as a tool for personal gain?
The kingdom is not a KINGdom.
“...Son of the Father, who took away the sin of the world, have mercy on us! ”
Are you prepared to enter a kingdom overseen by the so-called appointed Son of the Father? This question is deceptive, as everyone awaits the second coming of God
advisory from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where the trial on his case is being moved from March 21, 2023, to March 19, 2024. He is on the US FBI’s most wanted list because of his alleged engagement in sex trafficking, fraud and misuse of visas, money laundering, and many more. Looking at that huge number of followers he has, one can only imagine how many people have been deceived by his influence using the name of God. It’s an illusion that tricks the hearts of the vulnerable!
“For the Kingdom, and the Kingdom only”—this is the principle that Quiboloy imparts to every member of the ministry. On this, they must forsake everything else, including their families. Who would have thought that the ‘Messiah’ would lead people in this manner when, in the first place, the Lord’s goal is to unite the people, not to disconnect them from others?
Besides, the ministry conducts youth involvement, sending the youth from Davao to Quezon for fundraising missions during December, which they called it, “month of blessings’. This month is being coated with the delusion that it’s a blessing; however, in reality, it is a movement that involves begging for money to raise funds. Each minister is assigned a specific financial quota, ranging from 500 to 5,000 pesos. “We are pretending to be deaf and mute,” testified by survivors from Quioboloy’s hands. Teaching youth to lie is a wrong move, especially from a ministry that tends to teach people only the truth.
to meet the Messiah. Would you be tempted to take that bait? This is a real challenge to our convictions, echoing the importance of having faith in the middle of the crisis of spiritual deception happening in our place.
That’s how Quiboloy entered this realm, where he manipulated the people to be his followers, or perhaps workers for the ‘King’. As the leader of the ministry he built, known as the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), which is a Davaobased Restorationist church, this kingdom was supposedly to be the haven of the people. Unfortunately, it has become a prison of lies about spirituality and different kinds of abuse.
Quiboloy, who has more than 6 million followers through his satellite television network, is now in the hell seat of various controversies following an
The unfortunate reality here is that failing to meet the quota pushes them into public humiliation. Those within their inner circles will accuse them of being of the devil and insist that they repent because they are possessed. Is it now their obligation to get a big chunk of money and just give it to the ministry without reaping any benefits from their efforts?
In God’s will.
“Your watch could probably feed a hundred families for a month,” the words from the interview with Quiboloy on ABC News resonate undeniably true. The luxury items he owned could be beneficial if they turned out to be an aid for his members and marginalized individuals. However, he consistently shrinks his responsibility, just claiming, “It is God’s will.” But is it God’s will, even if it involves allegedly immoral activities? Definitely not!
Is it also God’s will to permit him to commit diabolic actions against the members of his ‘new religious movement’, such as sexually assaulting them at a young age? How can the ‘Messiah’ justify

having multiple spiritual wives and using them to serve night duty for his pleasure? Is it also the will of God to authorize him to harshly punish those people who simply want to watch movies by spanking them 20 times per movie? Without a doubt, it is reprehensible!
Quiboloy is a megalomaniac leader, and the Philippine government must take legal action against this self-appointed son of God, who has had strong political and media influence from the past and present administrations. What’s the place of the country in this big scandal involving the fake prophet from the Philippines?
Moreover, since he is the ‘son of God’, he should not escape from the allegations of the FBI, and he should send himself to court and prove that he is innocent; plus, he needs to believe that God will not allow him to be declared guilty if he is not. But what is happening now?
He is not the Messiah or the Son of God. Instead, he is the embodiment of evil, donning the guise of a prophet to deceive the innocent. He is nothing more than a person living in a lap of luxury and deceit. What a manipulator!
Juvenile Eagle
Leaders commonly use Eagles as their embodiment, possessing qualities such as being independent, full of vision, fearless, tenacious, vitalize, and others. But what happens if an unhatched eagle egg assumes the position?
On February 8, 2019, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Surigao City, which caused damage and danger to its people, posing fear to everyone that was taken advantage of by a 17-yearold boy named Jey Rence Quilario, also known as “Senior Agila”.
Promising a paradise after the dilemma, he established a new community on a 353 hectares of land in the mountain of Sitio Kapihan, which was enjoined by almost 5,000 people including professionals such as teachers, government officials, and police. They lived in his command and moved in his will.
Aside from the abuse of work for children, and delimiting people’s rights for their benefit, one of his unbelievable deeds is compulsory marriage among the residents. As young as 12 years old, children are paired with others to be married through his blessing, and the boys are said to be already learning the use of guns, though denied, the witnesses stand firm with their testimonies.
Is trusting through desperation a crime? Why are these people jailed in an unjust manner and unacceptable prison? And what’s scarier is that these people are
not just physically caged. The remaining residents are mentally and emotionally imprisoned with the goodness that was promised to them. Many of them are in denial of what is happening, they are whimpering over the arrest of their leaders on November 7, 2023, who are in control and manipulating their lives.
How did these people arrive in such desperation? If these people were cared for enough after that fearful event, would they still do the same?
To blame others is too late, as such cruelty has already taken place. Yet, this scenario should give lessons to anyone, especially those who have the authority - to lead like an eagle. An eagle who is not unhatched, in the shell of ulterior motives of manipulation. To be a leader is to be an eagle who is independently flying for the sake of its people, and not using its people for his own sake. An eagle does not necessarily always need to be bold and brave, they can also be soft and nurturing which is a must for a leader. They need to be aware of what is essential for the benefit of their members and help them nurture their future by giving them the freedom to explore opportunities.
Senior Agila does not live up to his name, he may also be an eagle as it was obvious how he wanted to fly at the top by controlling these people and altering the reality of the life they were supposed to live, but all in all, he is just a juvenile eagle.
Ethics of Intervention
A heavy imperative lies on the shoulders of the nation’s leaders to become a beacon of moral responsibility. Whilst it may seem controversial, as the current constitution is set on the non-perishing separation of the church and the state, cases like Quiboloy and Agila underscore the urgent need for leaders to step in and safeguard the vulnerable. May these words serve as a wake-up call to other legislators to follow the steps Sen. Risa Hontiveros took.
Separation is indeed inviolable, but there screams a heavier responsibility to protect individual liberties and uphold justice. Section 5 of the Bill of Rights should not necessarily grant impunity to those who exploit the vulnerable under the guise of faith. Religions must not be controlled nor seized, but regulated to ensure that human rights shall always be the country’s common denominator. The principles of justice and human rights should not be compromised, even in the realm of faith.
“Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

VOX POPULI
MARK DEO ABOBOTO
CAT’S EYE VIEW Break the cage of Lies!
Indeed, a cat has nine lives!
This is what former Senator Leila De Lima proved to the Philippines, where she was unjustly vilified solely because of the lies and toxic illusions created by the superiors in the government, which permeated the mindset of some Filipinos. Her release on bail marks the kickoff of destroying the cage of lies constructed exclusively to entrap her.
We know that De Lima formerly held significant roles such as senator, chairperson of Commission on Human Rights and Secretary of Justice- positions that are important both as an individual and as a lawyer. It is difficult to imagine that regardless of that distinguished background, she still underwent and spent almost 7 years in prison. The one who always fought against injustices has ironically found herself in the place of those offenders.
On February 24, 2017, exactly on this date, De Lima surrendered herself after three (3) criminal complaints related to drugs were filed against her, following the issuance of warrant of arrest by Judge Juanita Guerrero of Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204. She was detained in Camp Crame, where senators Bong Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada were also held. Many controversies were thrown at her, verbal abuses and public insultation damaged her reputation and personality during those years, impeding both her life and advocacies aimed at helping the people.
This appears as revenge because De Lima investigated the extrajudicial killings in Davao City that occurred during former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s reign as mayor. The timing of De Lima’s arrest coincides with Duterte’s rise to power as president. At this point, how come we will not question the administration that there’s no personal attack on this case?
In the other face of the coin, Leila would not be called the ‘Cat Lady of Crame’ without any reason. Indeed, she is the epitome of how cats always survive in different
left for ordinary Filipinos?
near-death situations in life. Look at this background short story: She earned that moniker because she became a cat lover while staying in jail. In the first place, she did not want cats, or she was not into it; but gradually, over the years of staying, she formed a bond with them. They became her go-to companions, offering her comfort during times of sadness. Look how she transformed herself into a loving caretaker for those animals who initially received little attention from the people in Crame; what more in her personal life? It only reflects how she definitely has firm ethics and good values.
Speaking of values, De Lima is always at her core as a lawyer. Remembering that she has the option to never return to the Philippines when she knew in the first place that there’s a certainty of her being charged because of the allegations. She can apply for political asylum abroad if she wants to. However, it’s a no for her, and she believes that she needs to face those charges and prove her innocence in the Philippines.
“Because, in law, flight is indicative of guilt, people will think that I am guilty,” as emphasized by De Lima in her interview with Karen Davila. Also, she added, she still believes in the justice system in the Philippines, and she has always taught her students to respect the rule of law. Even though there’s a flaw, there’s still hope on it. Look this as a reflection on how she views life differently. Unlike with Ping Lacson, who did not surrender because of his lack of faith in the justice system under Gloria Arroyo’s administration. De Lima, even under the administration who runs everything with lies and deceit, remains hopeful in the system even if it takes too long.
De Lima: I need to believe justice system will ultimately work in my favor.
If someone with a prominent position in politics, specifically
Just like cats, who are stereotyped as weak and a loser to dogs, Duterte perceives De Lima as a light person, or a weak and vulnerable individual in his eyes. I can say that the year of Duterte became an evilmouthed era in the history of our country; it is full of curses. He branded De Lima as an immoral woman, the mother of a drug lord, and the top narco-politician in the Philippines. Such labels are deceptive to the Filipino, to the extent where they may believe it even if there’s no concrete evidence. They just always depend on the president’s mouth; what a shame!
In this case, it appears that the judiciary is subject to the political consideration, that this branch can be manipulated by the superiors and crowded by political noise. They lack the independence they ought to have. Their mandate is not just to imprison wrongdoers, but also to protect the innocent. However, their actions are just the justice ego of the President Duterte. The release of Delima displays a positive result for the justice system, echoing her hope for its improvement. The allegations against her are now fading out as many witnesses began to recant their testimonies against her, saying that all their words in the past were not true and were just threatened by big personalities back then just to implicate the drug charges against the former senator. There’s no personal attack? Only the deluted cling to such claims.
De Lima wasted almost seven years of her life for naught. That era of our country shows how those in power can control the system just to give their enemies the hell area for revenge.
“...there is nothing kept secret that will not come to light”. Lalabas at lalabas din ang katotohanan!

Debating Guns and Handshakes
In the case of West Philippine Sea the issue is not on our military sea based but rather how President Bongbong Marcos will exercise its sovereignty over it, there is no need for military raise just to cover up our country’s economic problems or to run from people finding where the 20 pesos per kilo of rice is, as promised by Marcos.
Until now the tensions in the West Philippine Sea continues and have led to debates, now leading to the need and cost of the military buildup led by President Bongbong Marcos.
The West Philippine Sea remains a hotbed of geopolitics, with competing territorial claims and marine resources disputes making President Bongbong Marcos’s pursue his commitment to military development underscores the need to enforce strong safeguards against potential threats to national sovereignty, however, this commitment must be balanced with the economic and diplomatic aspects of the situation.
But the issue here is, does the government really need to spend a lot on military upgrades just to protect our own sovereignty in the West Philippines Sea or do we just need better diplomacy?
We say devoting more resources to military efforts could divert money away from vital social and economic programs specially with the government’s plan, which has a 10-year timeline and would cost some P2 trillion thus, a transparent and effective military procurement process is essential, this review should ensure that fiscal constraints are maintained and minimize the impact on the country’s fiscal stability.
Additionally, integrating international networks is an important part of the equation, maybe a strong military is important but we cannot depend on this specially without
transparency on plans present and with continuous problems with our economy like high inflation rate.
We firmly believe that enhancing diplomatic relations and engaging in peaceful negotiations can make a significant contribution to the long-term stability of the region. Efforts in cooperation with neighboring countries and international organizations can provide a means of resolving disputes without resorting to military conflict even if we do not need to argue further since there was already an arbitral ruling years back
With all of these ongoing challenges in the West Philippine Sea ,we need a call for a comprehensive approach considering the economic ramifications of military upgrades.
President Bongbong Marcos should also be given the more delicate task of enhancing national security, integrating diplomacy into the process ensures a comprehensive and sustainable solution, balancing safeguarding territorial integrity, economic infrastructure and fostering peaceful relations development in the region.
ID’surb: The Absurd Trend of Ignorance
n the pool of emotions, we are allowed to dive in, and the sea of issues we can swim in - to breathe in the surface of the waves of hate speech has become more challenging.
With the power bestowed by various social media platforms, its users have become more open in a discourse of attempts to give opinions in someone’s life. The reason that the content was posted publicly is that that became their pass to overbound the private lives of others. Without thinking, their concern has turned into ignorance - spewing judgment without actually grasping the full situation.
Last November 2023, the hearts of many Filipinos were shattered into pieces as the most phenomenal love team in the country, KathNiel, officially announced their separation after 11 years of sharing their lives. The relationship between Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo has become the fantasy of many, setting them as the standard, that is why it is no surprise that many shed tears and even stop believing in the essence of love.
Moving back, before the confirmation happened, a lot of speculations have been circulating and different names have already been involved in their rumors. Both their fans and non-fans have an equal share of outrage about information that was never confirmed. Every action of the persons involved was perceived as a hint - as if these people were dumb enough to allow the public to interfere in their private lives.
Without official statements released, a lot of people are leaving unnecessary and hurtful comments. They were
called by names, mocked, and judged without a hearing session; they were arrested without warrants.
This has been very rampant in our society, every mistake that one personality has made was easily given a conclusion by the viewer and audience. One of the targets locked is the TV host and known comedian Vice Ganda who was most of the time called out on social media for the points and comments he says in a noontime show. We also have a lot of TikTok influencers who have been dealing daily with such disappointing behaviors from the public. Equipped with the reason of “freedom of speech”, they also hinder the freedom of these acts to say what is on their mind, and even get called out for giving a stand. They curb the natural ability of others to grow by making them scared of saying opinions that may not be aligned with the views of many.
This type of scenario is not new, Filipinos have a lot of time on their hands, as it has become a trend and gradually becoming normal to publicly gossiped online. There were even public platforms that depower the existence of reliable magazines, and entertainment news as they release controversies based on their reliable sourcessources that originally needed to be cited, but they kept.
When called out, “Our accounts, our rules”, are the rebuttals of those who like to interfere and give public opinions regarding issues they do not fully know about, yet these same people forget “My life, my rules” for they always like to dip in teas they are not even familiar of.
To give an opinion is never wrong, to demand accountability is necessary, but these can all be successfully achieved without the need of public shaming. The threat is that we tend to be blinded by our preconceptions that we sometimes become peddlers of fake scenarios and get easily manipulated by mere accusations to satisfy our personal biases. The information we hear was unprocessed solely for the reason that a conclusion has already been made without careful digestion of facts.
Online ‘marites’ mostly usually comment, “dsurb”, a slang term to emphasize satisfaction when something bad happens to someone they do not find nice. Was it necessary– to bring down others you don’t like to uplift the ones you like – again, without knowing the factful happenings?
Public figures like artists, politicians, and even businessmen are also entitled to their privacy. Viewers and others who haven’t even impacted the lives of these people should learn how to set boundaries. They do not owe anyone anything.
No one deserves wrongful judgment for things that were never confirmed, much more appropriate for things that they do not do.
It is illogical to influence others with things we think based on our pure thoughts, it is absurd to practice ignorance - it is not a trend, and no one deserves it.

Jack-Plot: The Eerie Lottery
Privacy or transparency— which must be the priority?
Working out two things simultaneously can pose challenges, for it often involves trade-offs. Deciding where to allocate competing interests requires careful consideration to ensure that the effectiveness of either priority will not be compromised. But, inevitably, there will be certain situations where focusing on a particular one means sacrificing attention to others. Worse, failing to navigate the depth of both priorities may be perceived
Cas a lack of integrity.
Surge of public attention is being drawn to the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) due to its consecutive involvement in several controversies. From rigged lotto results to fake winners, the office has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions in online communities.
Before the end of 2023, a lone bettor won the biggest jackpot of 571 million in the Ultra Lotto 6/58. A few days later, January 2, three bettors won 108 million in the Lotto 6/42 jackpot. On January 8, two bettors split the Megalotto 6/45 draw of 121 million. A week after, January 16, a bettor won 640 million in the Super Lotto 6/49 draw. The following day, January 17, another lone bettor won 698 million in the Grand Lotto 6/55 through PCSO’s new platform, e-lotto. This occurrence of consecutive winners within a month prompts questions about the fairness and integrity of PCSO’s lottery draw.
In response, to reassure the public about the transparency and credibility of their operations, PCSO explained that the substantial prize amounts became achievable after they utilized their reserves to increase the jackpot by 100 million for each draw. This strategy aimed to stimulate greater participation

Prior to the anomalies of rigged games, PCSO had already attracted the suspicion of the public. This is after they posted a photo of a woman receiving a check handed out by a PCSO official. The woman in the photo is the lone winner who bagged the 43.8 million Lotto 6/42 jackpot on December 28, 2023. Netizens humorously criticized the woman’s image, pointing out apparent poor editing, such as irregular lines and shadings. This incident not only generated amusement but also raised anomalies and doubts regarding the integrity of the lottery agency. Moreover, the perceived discrepancies in the image added fuel to concerns about the transparency and authenticity of the lottery results.
During a Senate hearing on the recently introduced e-lotto by the agency, PCSO’s General Manager, Melquiades Robles, explained that they opted to modify the bettor’s image following a complaint from a past winner. The complainant requested anonymity by covering her face, but since the clothing was still recognizable, they asked to obscure it as well. Hence, Robles clarified that
Maraming pagkakataon na tao na mismo ang naghahanap ng kanilang serbisyo para di umano mapadali ang mga transaksyon. the decision to edit the image was made to “protect the identity of the winner.”
Regardless of their intention, PCSO cannot shift blame onto netizens for questioning their integrity since this is not the first instance where they have faced accusations of engaging in manipulation. Their past involvement in similar controversies adds weight to the skepticism expressed by the public.
Maintaining the confidentiality of the bettor’s identity is crucial, but it is equally essential to provide transparency about the legitimacy of the winning outcomes.

For better or for worse?
While change is often viewed as advantageous by certain individuals, it is important to acknowledge that what works well for a few may not necessarily cater to the needs or preferences of the majority. In the context of change, embracing the potential for both failure and success is not unknown to everyone, just as it is recognized that change should consider inclusivity, not solely focusing on “positivity”.
Crossroads: Game of Thrones: Philippines The Modernized and The Marginalized
Jeepneys have become a significant part of Filipino culture for the past 80 years. Originating from General Purpose vehicles post-World War 2, it has gained popularity due to its accessibility and unique design, enticing Filipinos from all walks of life. However, with the continuous progression of modernization over the years, jeepneys have been overlooked, prompting some to consider that it may be time to enhance and upgrade these traditional vehicles.
The decision to shift from traditional to a modernized approach began with the initiation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.A multi-phase program launched in 2017, seeks to provide a safer and more efficient means of transport for various forms of passenger road transport which includes the Jeepney.
The first initial phase involves jeepney operators consolidating themselves into various cooperatives and corporations with the hopes of incorporating them into routes for a more efficient flow of transportation instead of having to compete with one another for passengers. Also, these consolidated entities have the opportunity to group the money made, share overhead costs, and seek out better chances to improve their vehicles via loans.
It sounds like a fair deal, right? But the problem now lies with the steps that came after the consolidation phase. Once consolidated, operators will have to improve their vehicles with “Modern Jeepneys” whose prices range from P1.3 million to P2.6 million. For comparison, traditional jeepneys cost around P150 thousand to P250 thousand, making these modern versions the equivalent of more than 10 traditional jeepneys alone.
This led to various transport groups conducting various protests and transport strikes around the country, and rightfully so. Having to just recover from the onslaught of the pandemic, then having the added challenge of paying a loan for something to invest in the future while only surviving off of a limited budget? This added an immense amount of burden to the jeepney operators, especially to those living in rural areas and those earning minimum wages.
The amount of
pushback from the general public regarding this issue has led to some compromises that do not address the underlying problem ahead. Sure, there will be subsidies worth P360 thousand for each modern jeepney unit, but it only lies a fraction of the entire costs that the drivers must shoulder. Sure, the types of modern jeepneys endorsed have a much better form and efficiency compared to traditional ones, but there have been local companies making their takes of the modern jeepneys with a much lower price that are not heavily endorsed by the government. Sure, the deadline for consolidation would have its last extension this late April 2024, but it proves that there is still a decent amount of jeepney operators still having second doubts about this program that must be mitigated as much as possible.
It cannot be denied that jeepney drivers may also desire modernized jeeps. However, looking from any perspective, if they are only earning a minimum wage, they should not be forced to meet what is genuinely beyond their means. To foster a more effective and empathetic resolution, the government and the jeepney drivers should establish a mutual understanding by seeing eye to eye.
The government, as a policymaker, should take the initiative to listen attentively to the voices of the jeepney drivers; understanding the daily struggles they encounter, especially, in terms of their financial constraints.
True change is not only measured by the advancements in certain sectors but by the holistic improvement in the lives of all individuals, especially those who are in the periphery.
Unity--a monotonous platform that rooted from a generic campaign for togetherness, however, has remarkably captured the hearts of over thirty-one million Filipinos. The duo of Sara Duterte and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has strategically paved their way into power, yet this rapid ascent of their coalition is bound for a rock bottom fall for the two entrenched political dynasties.
The question persists: was it truly a partnership for “a better Philippines” or was it a mere marriage for political convenience? It’s as if cats and dogs within the Malacanang Palace between the two, yet Marcos heavily reiterates the stability of the duo. Where does loyalty lie within these lines? Do these alliances and parties only serve as a façade for selfish intentions and political gains?
The Philippine political landscape traces back to the Philippine Republic in 1899 via Malolos Constitution, and would only be around 125 years old. Although it could be seen that over a century of sovereignty and governance is quite significant, and that the country had evolved economically, it could still not be directly comparable to the political maturity of well-established Western states as the latter exhibits furnished democratic traditions, greater economic development, and stronger institutional and legal frameworks.
Under the Spanish regime, there was only a singular limited form of suffrage and was only for the principal men of the town—those who had the three Gs (guns, goons, and gold). However, Filipinos then understood the importance of political organization, and eventually, upper-class Trinidad Pardo de Tavera established the Federal Party which platform only anchored on seeking peace with the United States. Since the achievement of the Philippine independence in 1946, party systems have laid the playing thrones in the grounds of politics to two party systems: mainly, the Nacionalistas and the Liberals. What seemed to originally wanted claiming the country’s independence eventually shifted
interests to use the earlier goal to stir and generate voter support to stay in power.
“Behind a thin façade of party solidarity, the rule is every man for himself.” Upon the death of Manuel Roxas in 1948, Liberal party-member Elpidio Quirino assumed the presidency. The presidential election of 1949 signaled the beginning of dirty electoral politics and had proved to be at the advantage of the incumbent. “Dirtiest and bloodiest in all Philippine history.”
From the words of Liang: “It was somewhat a national disgrace.” There were multiple electoral discrepancies in the municipalities as there were more voters than the people of the entire population. In some areas, the dead outvoted the living. Some had already casted ballots and closed voting centers as early as 9 o’clock in the morning. Anyone who dared to question the procedures would be manhandled if not be killed.
As time moves and Marcos Sr. enters in the playing ground of thrones, Marcos Sr. had shown no allegiance to the Nacionalista Party which name caused him to win the 1965 elections after a last-minute switch from the Liberal Party; and ensured his monopoly of power by weakening the traditional parties. In the Post-Martial Law era, the two-party system was replaced by “a free and open party system” and this encouraged setting up of a multiparty system that led to the emergence of a number of parties in the post-1986 elections. The 1987 Constitution preferred the multi-party system to avoid the return of oligarchic tendencies.
It could be reiterated that dirty politics is rooted in the relatively young landscape of Philippine politics.
As the UniTeam maneuvers through allegations, it remains to mask a calculated pursuit of power. This discord continues to unveil and the true outcome of the political tango remains in the dark.
As this continues, this Game of Thrones puts the very lifeline of the Philippines’ mass economic security and its very own sovereignty. This story continues to grow.
Stay tuned!

A-I CAptAIn: An Expedition in Unveiling AI’s Highs and Lows
In the strange realm of media where the traditional inked pages once told wild stories, picture the unfolding fantasy, if you will, of a world where technology pirouettes at the speed of time none, throw away journalists’ pens digital front ballet used. In this incredible journey, we will take AI-powered media by storm, unveiling its treasures of advantage and navigating its flaws by storm.
The Wind in Our Sails
Imagine an incredibly impressive scenario where AI algorithms, like a digital storm, race through articles, catching a breeze of news and ensuring it lands quickly in the hands of eager readers. Play a thrilling dance with AI-powered rivers of customized media, delivering personalized content tailored to engage readers in stories that align with their preferences.
The Quest for Truth
In this ever-changing information war, an AI cavalcade attacks bastions of misinformation at lightning speed, ensuring that accuracy is paramount. Photojournalists, arm in arm with AI colleagues, embarked on a grand journey into investigative reporting. This partnership, where routine tasks are provided, provides deeper insights through incredibly complex issues, resulting in a harmonious blend of human emotion and artificial intelligence
In the foggy laboratory, journalistic principles are supported by a quest for mythic authority. The challenge is finding the elusive balance between human honesty and effective use of AI. Journalism’s Battle Royale: Humans vs. Machines:
A fierce duel unfolds as journalists find themselves in an arena, contending with the rising tide of AI. The clash raises a flag, questioning the fate of human storytelling in the age of machines.
Recently GMA Network has introduced the country’s first-ever nonhuman TV presenters, and, expectedly, people have a lot to say. One of the most common comments in the post about having AI as sportscasters is that it is cheaper than humans, who have monthly wages and for some, having AI sportscasters can result in job loss or even create more narrow opportunities for those who aspire to be a journalist.
In this particular case we can see how humans and machines are in one battle where the criteria is whether each and everyone benefit more, this can create more chaos thinking of the cons that it can give.
In this grand story of AI-powered media, the story unfolds through a dance between the digital and the human. As we ride the current of efficiency, we need to keep our eyes on the North Star of ethical reporting. Because in this strange story, the future of journalism lies not only in advanced algorithms but in the still distinctly human art of storytelling.
The fate of journalism lies in finding a delicate balance between the power of artificial intelligence and the inevitability of human relationships, to assure that information is not only fast and accurate but consumes ethical standards and also on impartiality.
Will the final destination be reached?

State of Journalism in the Philippines
Being a journalist in the Philippines is definitely a fulltime-at-risk job, tangled with fears and uncertainty of seeing better days for a country that favors the ones in power.
According to the 2023 Global Impunity Index released by New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the country has consistently been deemed as one of the most dangerous places for media workers, blemished by a mounting number of killings and attacks, ranking at #8. Since its launch in 2008, the country has never left the charts. Call that stable.
Since 1986, the year of the restoration of democracy, at least 199 journalists have lost their lives in the Philippines over killings and a lot of those are unresolved cases, a harrowing statistic that solidifies its position as one of the deadliest countries for journalists globally ranking at 132nd out of 180 on the 2023 RSF World Press Freedom Index. These violence not only endangers the lives and well-being of the dedicated professionals, but also puts a stranglehold on press freedom and the ability of journalists to courageously report on vital topics without fear of reprisal. Aside from this, there are still underreported threats and attacks that are being directed towards media reporters that include intimidation, red-tagging, libel, harassment, threats online and by mail, and physical assault.
LANCE SARMIENTO
he strongly condemned the killing of the broadcaster and said, “Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions.”
“The wanton killing of [a radio reporter] shows that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government isn’t doing enough to protect the press,” a statement by Shawn Crispin, CPJ’s senior Southeast Asia representative. “Talk is not equivalent to action. Until Marcos Jr.’s government shows it is serious about ending impunity for such killings, journalists will continue to be murdered at a horrific rate in the Philippines.”

antagonism towards the media in comparison to Former President Rodrigo Duterte who has publicly and repeatedly targeted journalists and media outlets, accusing them of spreading fake news and being biased against his administration, CPJ reports that journalists still await reforms and significant changes to improve the safety of the people working in the media.
If President Marcos genuinely stands by with the words that he notes, he needs to overtly reverse the damage that the former administration has inflicted upon the country. Duterte’s repressive actions against the media have left conditioning propagandas and damaging effects towards the public that led to hostility against journalists, loss of jobs, rampant fake news, and climate of fear and violence, only to sugarcoat his reputation.
Philippine Journalism: A game of lies, deceit, and everything grit
Philippines demands immediate action from both the government and society. Our nation needs to acknowledge that the absence of a secure and unrestricted press jeopardizes the public’s access to information and the ability to hold criminals accountable. It is critical for the government to implement effective measures to safeguard journalists and uphold the freedom of press, all without being tagged as terrorists of the country. For now, all we can do is to keep our eyes open, raise questions, and side with the truth, for someday, the hope to live in a country without the looming threat of aggression or oppression, can be the reality of our future generation.

The most recent violence against journalists was a broadcaster from Misamis Occidental. He was slain while he was on a livestream in his home office, leaving his followers in traumatizing silence and confusion as they witnessed such horrific scenes straight from their devices.

and the most recent, Juan Jumalon, 57, a broadcaster for Gold FM 94.7 was stormed into his home by two armed assailants in the middle of his show in Calamba, Misamis Occidental on November 5. It was captured

GUARDIAN OF TAMARAWS: Preserving the last of its kind
The increasing human population in the Mindoro Island stands in stark contrast to the dwindling numbers of the endemic Philippine bovine, the Tamaraws. Tamaraws are deemed a symbol of our national heritage and a noteworthy part of our natural resources. The presence of Tamaraw in Mindoro indicates the health and integrity of ecosystems.
This situation highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts and sustainable practices to protect the Tamaraw population and its habitat from further decline.
TAMARAWR: HORNORING THE GRASSLAND LEGENDS
Tamaraws, with the scientific term Bubalus mindorensis (Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo), is endemic in Mindoro, specifically found in Mount IglitBaco National Park. During the most recent annual headcount, the Natural Park estimated there were over 400 tamaraws. A current estimation tells us the actual number may now only be closer to just 200-250 animals. A deafening reality to face in their uncertain future.
The Tamaraw is a critically endangered species of buffalo native to the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. It is a small, hoofed mammal with a stocky build, short legs, and a dark brown coat, and most commonly known for their distinctive V-shaped horns that curve backwards. They primarily inhabit dense grasslands and forested areas, feeding on grasses and shrubs, as it is their primary source of food.
As nocturnal animals, they thrive during nighttime as a way of avoiding their predators. They produce beneficial effects on nature by making the vegetation flourish, preventing bush overgrowth, and lessening the possibility of wildfires. Not, of course, until the human nation attacked.
Aside from natural death, other threats are associated with the Tamaraws’ decline, mostly suffered by heavy hunting and continuous habitat destruction. Heeding this, Under Proclamation No. 273, s. 2002 by Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, October is recognized as the Special Month for the Conservation and Protection of the Tamaraw in Mindoro.
EVERYJUAN, TAMARAWS LET’S GET HERD!
By declaring October of every year as a “Special Month for the Conservation and Protection of the Tamaraw,” the government aims to raise awareness and mobilize efforts by implementing activities geared toward the conservation of the Tamaraw and its habitats to safeguard their decreasing population.
A run for a cause, ‘Save the Tamaraw Ultramarathon’ was also organized in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, as the first ever ultramarathon in the province, in collaboration with Running Mangyan, Mindoro AdvenTOURS, and DENR Tamaraw Conservative Program.
Preserving the tamaraw, indeed poses significant challenges and requires a pocket full of awareness. Conservation efforts, habitat protection, and community involvement are essential in ensuring their survival but more than these, the Tamaraw is one of the unique symbols that defines the island of the Mindoro, they are a cultural heritage and we must protect them at all costs.
The movement of the programs and actions for tamaraws will
tamaraw itself, but everyjuan.
“By 2050, Tamaraw will be a source of national pride and a flagship for Mindoro’s natural and cultural heritage. They thrive in well managed habitats, in populations that coexist with Indigenous People, and are valued by local communities across Mindoro.”

Thirst for Adventure: Quenched within Calapan
RADEN JECK DE GUZMAN
Ready not just to beat the heat but encapsulate the spirit of water in your system? Feeling the frills and chills along with the wind zooming through the waters, the exhilaration of cascading through the waves in jet skis or being one with them while flying through the open waters in inflatable boats. These are what’s new and up with the new Calapan Watersports located at Brgy. Pachoca, only a 17-minute drive from the Port of Calapan, serves locals indelible and quite frankly a memorable adventure that will reinvigorate the spirit to be involved in water activities once more.
Calapan’s First Splash ‘N Sparks
Swimming is the most simplest of water activities that most Calapeños are familiar with, kids and grown-ups alike are no stranger to this, yet with this being the only available way to partake in enjoyment with the presence of water, the feeling become dull overtime and saturated with everyone else attempting to find a sport in the waters. Watersports on the other hand is an unfamiliar endeavor in the city of Calapan albeit being surrounded by waters all around, this new business provides locals the ability to connect with the waters and experience more than just
swimming and snorkeling.
These all new and introduced ways in order to participate in water activities are but not limited to Jetskiing, Banana Boats, Dragon Boats, UFO, and Bandwagons. All providing a new and refreshing sight to behold when on the wuthering waves, not only this but an exhilarating thump on your chest- an excitement not found anywhere else (apart from really far places, ehem, Puerto Galera).
See the Sea with Family
Jet Skiing in itself may be a solitary activity but this is not the case for the
inflatables and friends. The Watersports Activities include fun, fluffy group rides like Banana Boats, Dragon Boats, UFO, and Bandwagons. These balloon-like boats will need more than 8 to 10 people to go and run at full capacity, and with these, you can grab your family and friends along to splash in the waters and frolic with them, shout or yell out the joy of experiencing with them. No water activity is not better without the presence of those people you’re fond of, so plow through the tides along with them and participate in an adventure sure to dilute the tense atmosphere that life brings.

Dagdag pa rito, ang Puerto Galera ay itinalaga bilang Man and Biosphere reserve noong 1977 ng United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Parte rin ang bayan bilang “Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World”, na kaisa-isahang bay sa Pilipinas na kasama sa listahan.

to be the good wife
I watch him as he slides his hand through the railings of the creaking old wooden stairs.
Male. Probably in his 50s. Pale. Has a scar at the right side of his neck. Hair slicked-back, streaked with gray. A mole below his right eyebrow. Beard like Van Dyke. Brown, Round eyes. Dry, thin lips. Nose, Buttonlike. Pale…Brown eyes. Dry lips. Van Dyke. Male. Pale. Gray.
Remember them, Olivia.
I broke down into silent tears as he reached his final steps.
”What’s the matter, my love?” he whispers as he sweeps the tears off my face with his rough calloused hands.
“Hey, Come on. You could tell me. What’s wrong?”
He’s deranged. I don’t know who this man is but he’s pretending like he knows me, pretending like I’m his bride or something. A real psychopath. He forced me to enter his car while I was coming home from school and then I ended up here, for God knows how long I’ve been here. A dimlylit room that you can barely see the corner from the other side, a literal prison cell for a crime you haven’t committed.
I kept my head down, in tears, still, avoiding looking at his dark, lurking eyes. He grabbed me by my neck, taking off the cloth that has been preventing me from screaming. I have tried screaming so loud for the past few days leading to him muffling my mouth, enough to wake him up all the time, but not enough for someone else to hear it from the ground. I’m tired.
“Don’t you think I’m too young??? I’m only 18! I haven’t lived my life yet!” I shrieked at his face. I tried getting close to attack him but my adrenaline was no match for the chains he had fastened to both my hands and feet.
“You know that’s bad for our child. You should get some rest. Come on.”
My body froze. I’m disgusted. I’m in fear. I wanted to jump from a very tall building. My knees, trembling in fear, in hopelessness, in remembering the dreams, being shattered, of a child who died the moment I entered this room. I’m alive but my soul is rotting to the ground. I’m gone.
Will everything be well in time? I’ve been losing hope, I say.
~ 9AM
I woke up with storms in my eyes.
I might die today, if I don’t play it well. But I have to at least try. Now or Never.
With steady hands, I tucked my hair behind my ear, combed it with my hands, each time thinking about a million ways to kill a man. It’s about time. I stared at my reflection from a puddle of leaked water near my bed, the wounds on my face reflecting how the darkness has finally consumed me, but no, I no longer fear it.
He’s finally here. At that moment, I knew that my life was about to change forever.
“I’m ready to be your wife.”
I knew that playing it safe would give me a fighting chance to actually survive this monster. I’ve seen this in movies. I needed to play it safe.
In the length of my captivation, I’ve noticed a number of things, the scratches on the floor, the dried blood on the floorboard, I felt them. I felt the people who had once been trapped into this space, who I might’ve shared the same experience of despair in this room, separated only by a thin sheet of time. There’s no way out…unless, through him.
In his hand was a key. How gullible this man can be.
“Give me your hand.” He whispered to my ear as he unbuckled the weight on both my feet and hands, and removed the cloth covering my mouth.
I stand still as he smiles at me, I gave him the softest smile I could ever give. Just wait for it, pig.
But what he didn’t know, in my hand was a wood, hidden behind me, a fallen piece from the crumbling stairs tearing apart every step he makes, sharpened with anger, hatred, and revenge.
“NO!” I screamed as I struck the shard, straight to his heart, badly hitting him, making his knees fall to the ground.
I tried to run as fast as I could though shaking in fear, desperation fueling every step. I stopped for a brief moment. I couldn’t live like this. I need to see him burn to the ground, burned to ashes like the lives he
took from the people like me. I’ve lost all morals.
I looked back at him for one last time, holding a match, dropped it and watched him as he faced his inevitable death in screaming, torturing pain. I wanted to feel satisfied that I was able to survive from him, but all I could ever think of was, if this gives me a ticket to hell, well then I will see him there.
The house crackled, falling down burning pieces to pieces, slowly succumbing to the flames. Through the haze, I caught a glimpse of a small window caught up in debris and metal bars but the jagged edges scraping through my skin had no comparison to my burning desire to live.
Gasping for air, my body laid down on the ground falling to the physical and emotional toll he has caused me, trembling still, looking back, the weight of what I have left behind settled heavily upon my shoulders.
A cold air breezes through my shoulder, warmth surrounds, the only way to honor those who suffered is to survive.
His name was Guzman. 54. Janitor in a local college. Suffering from Schizophrenia, Delusion, Dissociative Disorder. He lost his bride and their unborn child through an accident right before their wedding. Multiple human remains were also found in his home. He faced his death through the hands of his last victim, Olivia. She said “the man was calling her by a different name, forcing her to wear a gown, and pretending to have a wedding ceremony all in his basement”.

Who do you believe more?
the family man
I watch her in anticipation as she looks up at me as I slide my fingers on the railings of our striking off-white stairs.
Her bright electric blue eyes, wide like almond. Her lips, looking so soft and red as her cheeks. Her skin, so sleek. The prettiest girl you could ever imagine.
But as I go down, my tired blurry eyes can clearly see the sadness that filled her face and how she gave in to her tears as she looked away. Something is definitely bothering her to come meet me at 5AM in the morning.
Today isn’t any other day. At about 9AM, she’s gonna walk down the aisle and I’ll be waiting at the front of the altar. Hope she’s not getting cold feet though because she called to meet me at this hour to apparently say something important that couldn’t wait until later.
I totally knew about the superstition of not seeing your bride the day before the wedding, but can you look at her? I can never say no to her.
I quickly stood before her to wipe her tears off.
“What’s the matter, my love?” I asked.
She just kept crying.
“Hey, Come on. You could tell me. What’s wrong?” I asked her as I tried to meet her eyes.
Still, no answer. I brushed off her hair that has been covering her face.
“Don’t you think I’m too young? I’m only 18. I feel like I haven’t lived my life yet. ” she says in worry.
So she’s having cold feet. I wish I could say that I felt the same way too but I’m already certain of our future together when I first laid my eyes on her on the first day of school. All those years brought us here today, our marriage, the start of our family. Plus, I’m going to be a father.
“You know that’s bad for our child. You should get some rest. Come on.”
She held her tummy and looked with the face of
realization to our situation and why we’re doing this. I know she’s scared of being a mother but I’m here now. I hope she realizes that I’d give up everything to support her and my child.
Everything will be well, in time, I say.
~ 9AM
I woke up with stars in my eyes.
With steady and alwayshave-been ready hands, I reached for my tailored suit, meticulously combed my hair, took a deep breath and a final glance in the mirror, bubbling with excitement within my chest.
Arriving at the venue, a mix of emotions swirled in my mind. It honestly might be the sound of the laughter and joy filling the church, the symphony of anticipation, or the nervousness of getting married, being an adult, being a father, and raising them for life. Could I do it?
As I stood at the altar, waiting for the love of my life to walk towards me, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey and challenges we’ve been through, that eventually led us here. Today is the day I pledge my love and devotion to her, and to keep my promise to never leave her in the war that’s been happening to her mind for a very long time. If I could take her pain and trauma away from her and keep it inside of me instead, I would. A million times. I hope she knows that.
She’s finally here. At that moment, I knew that my life was about to change forever.
“I’m ready to be your wife.” she mouthed, smiled as she met my eye at the altar.
In my hand was a ring.
“Give me your hand.” I gazed at her face, setting aside her veil.
I smiled at her, she gave me the softest smile I’ve ever seen. Am I dreaming? She almost feels like a dream. I can’t believe I’m starting a family with the woman of my dreams.
”No!” she screamed, with nothing but horror on her face, looked away and fixedly at the door. I was shocked by what had happened. The people, in
confusion, stayed in their seats.
I tried coming near to her to console her but she pushed me away with her full force and a pain got through every inch of my skin and nerves, pain felt like a dagger being struck to my heart, as I witnessed how our relationship crumbled down, making my knees eventually fall to the ground.
I watched her run away from me slowly, getting smaller, getting blurry, from my tears. My chest tightened, and the air seemed to vanish from the room as I gasped for breath.
In my fading away sight, I saw her, as she looked back, holding the ring, time seemed to have moved slowly as she dropped it like nothing, our promise ring, leaving as the last image of her I will ever see. It was torture.
But as I lay there, begging for air, all I could ever think of was her. The memories of her face, her touch, her sweet sounding voice to wake up to, I’m overwhelmed. How could she leave without a proper explanation? How could she shatter the dreams we made about our future children? Did I never really mean anything to her?
As my world started to lose its light on me, I found myself wishing for her to come back and I would tell her how much she meant to me. Slowly, in my tears, the heartbreak consumed me, eventually taking its toll to the eternal demise of both my soul and my fallen heart.
Her name was Olivia. 18. Suffering from PTSD and Schizophrenia. She was sexually assaulted as a child by a man that kept her kidnapped for 5 months. She was impregnated but lost her child through a miscarriage. She ran away on the day of her wedding claiming that she “escaped and killed the man that kidnapped and assaulted her”. The groom, her childhood lover, with a weak heart, faced his terrible death after seeing his bride run away from him.

Both, Maybe?
TRISHIA TRILLANES
Friday, 6th of January, my father navigated through the storm, desperate to reach the hospital in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, despite my father’s best efforts, fate seemed to have different plans. The storm raged, rain pounded, lightning flickered, and my mother’s scream echoed as the urgency of the situation grew. Eventually, I came into this world and took my first breath inside our tricycle - my makeshift delivery room.
They named me Sky. Intrinsically, as parents, other than their profound love, perhaps they gave me this name to foster early the vision of a positive future that they saw ahead of me. Maybe they gave me this name with the hope that they would be raising a child enriched with boundless potential. Perhaps they gave me this name because they wanted me to be someone that embodied the good qualities
tied with the sky, such as limitless imagination and a sense of optimism. Maybe they gave me this name because, just as the saying goes, “sky’s the limit,” they wanted me to be someone with the capacity to soar above challenges.
Unfortunately, with all these optimistic “maybes” that my parents stitched into my name, nothing seems to truly reflect my reality. Growing up, despite the abundant love that I consistently received from my parents, there was this subtle force of anxiety and uncertainty that always lingered. Even in the presence of my supportive family, I still found myself grappling with internal struggles.
Most of the time, I tend to compare myself to others who, from my perspective, have more apparent issues than I do. I am within the embrace of a loving home, but instead of feeling fortunate, this heightens my anxiety even more. It makes
me develop a sense of guilt and invalidity for being blessed with a good foundation of support and yet still battling with internal turmoils that seem to have little to no valid cause at all.
So, maybe not. Maybe I am not named Sky to meet my parents’ expectations, nor to fulfill their aspirations. Maybe I am not the Sky that embraces sunlight. Perhaps I am not the Sky that runs after the radiant heights of hope.
But maybe both. Maybe, just like the sky, I am just torn between staying with light or giving in to darkness. Perhaps I reflect beauty and serenity and encompass storms at the same time. Maybe I am meant to navigate both great heights and profound depths. Maybe I am struggling mentally, but the love I have for life, planted by my family, is just as equally lovely.

Beyond the Mirror
Heart is speeding up, and I’m not sure what to say. Who am I, or what do I have to offer? I’m buried under the massive weight of my own thoughts before I even have the chance to show who I really am. What is this weight of the world on my shoulders that stems from nowhere? Shuddering while attempting to speak and losing all confidence to go on with my words, this is not who I wanted to be. I’m not a stuttering clunk of meat only serving as comic relief for others to pity.
I look in the mirror, I smile, I weep, and I look back once more. This is the reflection of the pitiful self I managed to incur over the years. Just as I managed to see a glimpse of the image I saw, I thought to myself that I didn’t really care what emotion I put out
or whatever in the heavens I say at all. In just a moment’s straw, nothing that anybody thought of me ever really etched a corner of the person I am. Straddling with the minds of others I cannot even begin to see nor understand seems like an uphill battle that one cannot win, so I do not care anymore. I accept who I am beyond what I see in the mirror, in the reflection of myself on the inside contrary to what is on the outside. I am myself and there’s nothing to be shy or not too confident about in the way I move, speak, or act because in the end, with a billion other living people on Earth, how many do I really care for what they think about? That’s right, little to none.

pocket change
REIZELLE MAE BELLEZA
Once, a kid —bright and true worried for his contribution due, Shaking his wallet, all is silent
“Wala namang laman”, he’d lament.
With a heavy sigh, he got up
Breakfast table as his first stop “Mama, may babayaran sa school.”
Straight out, never whimpering like a fool.
“Anak, pasensya.” — his mother replied. He didn’t need to hear the rest of her side.
Father’s at work, busy as always
Yet his pay could not last for all days.
“Okay lang po, Ma” —a lie, a reassurance
All she could give was a passing glance
Oh how she wished for a golden goose Dreaming that poverty was only a ruse.
Reaching for pants by the laundry, He then rushed to dress in a hurry, Wearing his father’s yesterday’s pair
After all, they always did share.
Classroom chatter, real-time laughter
Cut short with a one-liner— “Magbayad na kayo.”
The treasurer said. Last in the list was
Panic. Worry. Oh, what to do?
Should he set up a rendezvous, a money deal between two: Poor lil him with rich big you-know-who
In a nervous tick, he placed his hand In his old father’s pocket pants.
Eyes wide, mouth agape
A crumpled bill, what a nice save!
Slowly as if fragile, he pulled it out.
Careful though hopeful, in a tight pout, Manuel L. Quezon peeked his head
No longer by the treasurer’s hand is he dead
Newfound hope in the forgotten Bills left crinkled, unbidden No money? No worries, no sweat. In his father’s pockets, he’ll bet.
Day after day, the kid fished in the pocket for the money he wished. His craving paid. His debts cleared, Never telling his father whom he feared.
He feared his father would take away The magic pockets that made his day. But the growing greed was mightier than fear Soon, he’ll realize that the catch is
“Libre mo naman ako!,” his friend joked Back in his pockets, his hands poked Feeling something smooth, wrinkles absent
Left then right, where did the magic go?
Goosebumps on his thigh, fingers sweating
He laughed it off but inside, rioting
A hole —There’s a hole in his pocket!
A hole— There’s a hole in their pocket...
In shame, he bowed his head down Entering his home with a deep set frown. Taking off the pants, pockets inside out He threw it away, apology in his mouth.
“Mama, lagot ako kay Papa.” —he began. With curiosity, mother replied with: “Saan?”
Eyes on the loose seams, she cracked: “Napasobra ka yata sa pagdukot, ‘Nak!”
A kid — once bright and true Tore his father’s pocket flaps into two.
When reminded he had another contribution due, “Butas ang aming bulsa,” is what he’d tell you.
the dream I used to dream
I used to dream I used to dream for paper planes
I used to look up at the sky and release a relaxing sigh turns out, I just used to I thought I was smart and I thought I was enough
Let me paint a picture of a tale so old
The corruption that creeks as the story unfolds
It starts with a whisper, a secret, a bribe
A web of deception, a power-hungry tribe
The rich get richer, the skin grows thicker
In this dystopian world, the poor succumbs to hunger
I was just a kid and I looked up to them
Now my children’s children are indebted for them
Queen of Confidentiality, King of Hypocrisy
Blood unmatched but kills by the same thousand cuts
I AM DONE! I AM SO DONE WITH THIS COUNTRY!
I’m done with Filipinos for putting my youth at stake
If I could have a better future I’d walk out of this
Climb my way up to the North Pole and forget this country ever existed
Because I hated you, I hated all 31 million of you
I hated seeing bad cops in news tainting the national police
When they should’ve always been protect-
ing, serving justice and peace
I hate the politicians so against of what is right
No to Abortion, No to Divorce, No to SOGIE, Anti-Discrimination
But Yes to Illegal Gambling, Deforestation, Mining, Yes to putting “alleged” thieves into senate Yes to Corruption, because they benefit from it
While minorities like us suffer in silence
I hate the Filipinos for putting up with what they don’t deserve
So I became the voice but then they called me a terrorist of the state
Well I wasn’t hurt, but I recall being scared
For aiming a bullet straight to my head
I wanted to be the voice but at what cost?
My own life? My lovely beloved life?
One will say, to think about our land
Think about the children
Think about the future of our unborn children
But when are they ever going to learn?
We warned them from houses to houses
Laughed back and forth, sick on their faces
I should be laughing and say I told them so
But maybe they’re right
I’m more scared for the young anti-heroes
Haven’t we suffered for so long?
Filipinos, HEAR OUR PRAYERS
The cries echo in cities,
in towns near and far, Filipinos, HEAR OUR PRAYERS
No hidden agendas, no more cloak and no noose Filipinos, HEAR OUR PRAYERS
We demand transparency, We demand for the truth
Filipinos, HEAR OUR PRAYERS
Waking up from the truth, we begin to see
The webs of deception, the root of the tree
Fight for the right, let us unite!
To battle the darkness, we must cleanse the stain
To reform the laws, to rewire our brain
Kill it where it burns, break corruption’s chain!
With the strength of the people, we’ll rise above, For justice and honor, and the power of love
Together we’ll conquer, together we’ll soar
We must end the corruption that poisons our soul!
I used to dream I used to dream for paper planes I used to look up at the sky and release a relaxing sigh and turns out I still could I used to dream to be the voice I used to be the voice
Now it’s your turn Don’t walk. Run.

LANCE SARMIENTO, SHARMAINE FRUELDA
“Isa, dalawa, tatlo, apat, lima - “ Kablam!

BISHOP MOI:
These are the three words that the newly appointed Apostolic Vicar of Calapan Most Reverend Moises Magpantay Cuevas, D.D. uttered in his acceptance speech during his installation ceremony, September 6.
In the sacred halls of Sto. Niño Cathedral, hundreds of priests and bishops from across the country gathered for the installation of Bishop Moises who marked a milestone for the youngest bishop in the Philippines at the age of 49.
Kalap: Origins and Beginning
Pope Francis first introduced Cuevas as the 4th Apostolic Vicar on June 29, taking the helm from Bishop Warlito Cajandig, who held the post from 1989 until November 2022 in which it was announced that Cajandig would step down due to health complications.
Prior to his installation, Cuevas held a two-decade experience in the priesthood under the Zamboanga archdiocese starting from 2000. He would render service as parish vicar and rector in various churches across the region.
His role would evolve over time as he would become the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga as well as the Director of the Archdiocese’s Commission to the Clergy. Marking a two-decade run in the priesthood, he would be appointed as the archdiocese’s auxiliary bishop in March 2020.
Everything is for the Lord, everyone is involved, everywhere is for the mission
Kalapit: One with God and His Creation
In his road to priesthood, he has shown to live not only within the scriptures and teachigs of God, but also apply these lessons into everyday life, onto His Creation and others.
During his stay at Zamboanga, he has once called out fellow priests that would have lavish lifestyles, displaying various properties and wealth that can be deemed inappropriate as a member of the church. With this, he urged
them to give themselves fully to God, without keeping a part for themselves.
In the lead up to his installation ceremony, his arrival to the province of Oriental Mindoro at Calapan City Pier came with heartfelt appreciation from fellow Mindoreños. Not only he was welcomed by a group of Mangyan indigenous people that would perform a simple program, but also during the parade onto the Bishop’s Residence he was welcomed with people from all walks of life. From students of DWCC to parishioners of various churches line up the streets to offer their warm greetings to the upcoming Bishop of Calapan.
Kalapad:
Walking Together
Nearly 100 priests and 40 bishops from across the nation participated in a magnificent canonical procession that opened the installation ceremony. Charming religious acts and culturally rich ceremonies interspersed the celebration. Bishop Moises, who has a strong bond with the community, graced the event wearing traditional Mangyan clothing. He participated in a tribal rite, presenting a live chicken, and striking the door of the Cathedral with the gavel to formally declare himself the new bishop.
After this solemn procession, Bishop Moises gave an emotional acceptance speech and took on the official duties of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan’s bishop. Fellow worshipers, students, and even government officials from across Oriental Mindoro gathered in the Cathedral’s halls for this historic event.
“Everything is for the Lord, everyone is involved, everywhere is for the mission; this is our synodal church, the church walking together,” Bishop Moises passionately expressed.
The installation ceremony culminated with Bishop Moises presiding over his first mass at the Cathedral. Attendees commemorated the historic event with photographs and a shared lunch, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among all present.
As the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan approaches its 75th Founding Anniversarry this 2027, a new chapter now unfolds with Bishop Cuevas taking the lead towards a time of evangelization across almost 900,000 Catholics in the province walking the path of synodality together.

DRAGGED D’ QUEEN!
CHERUBIM ANN MALIMATA
Pura Luka Vega (who uses the pronoun they/them) is a drag queen in the Philippines who portrays the image of Jesus Christ and performed a punk rock version of Ama Namin or the Lord’s Prayer in a bar during Pride in Manila. This caught the netizen’s attention, specifically the Catholics, who found the performance uneasy and unacceptable considering the way they used to worship God.
What I Believe.
When I saw the controversial video in X (formerly Twitter) of Pura Luka Vega, I suddenly asked myself, is this right? I grew up guided by my parents to be God-fearing. I went to a catholic school when I was in high school, which I know plays an enormous part in shaping my spiritual being. This is where I learned the other prayers such as the Angelus Prayer and the 3 o’clock prayer. And I still remember how every one of
my subject teachers on Religion focused on delving deeper into how prayers are sacred, especially the Lord’s Prayer or what we all know - the Ama Namin.
Also, the time came when we were told to not hold hands in the part of the Lord’s Prayer and just form our prayer hands in front of our chest as a sign of solemness.
Since that’s how I practice my worship, I am intrigued by how Pura Luka Vega still stands on what they called God in Drag. Pwede ba ‘yon?
Reading comments on how people reacted, I know it is full of Catholics who are offended by what Pura did.
What Pura Believes.
“I stand by my performance.”
“It’s my way of preaching, honoring Catholic Faith.” These statements came into Pura when they was asked if they would do it again.
Meanwhile, the Philippines for Jesus Movement and other Christian groups filed a criminal complaint, and the performer was declared ‘persona non grata’ in 17
cities across the country, including Manila and Cebu in the south.
As months passed, Pura was charged with violating a law that prohibits “indecent or immoral plays, scenes, acts, or shows” that offend any race or religion.
After being executed, they extended they apology to those people who feel offended but still Pura stickes around believing in their performance.
“Tell me exactly what I did wrong. I’m open for a dialogue and yet cities have been declaring persona non grata without even knowing me or understanding the intent of the performance. Drag is art. You judge me yet you don’t even know me,” Pura Luka Vega tweeted.
When we talked about this in one of my classes, my teacher asked us if we knew Pura Luka Vega personally and they background. And it struck me. It might surprise some to know that Pura was raised by a devout Catholic mother. The young Amadeus would go to church every day and pray the rosary religiously. Pura is dedicated to what they believe and continually
prospers with the way they worship God.
What We Believe.
Music, prayer, praise, gestures, symbol thanksgiving, and confession are all ways you can communicate with God and what we have observed since then. The fundamental function of worship—the establishing and upholding of the relationship between humans and the holy— has many different aspects. It depends on what we believe and how we live..
Unlike Pura, many Catholics worship God with their eyes closed in a quiet and solemn setting. The majority, I, and Pura, or WE, are all Catholics who are devoted to the same God, and we should respect one another in how we communicate and express our feelings about Him.
Welcome All, Condemn None
Do I belong?
This is probably one of the common questions non-binary individuals raise with regards to their belongingness in the Catholic Church. In a status quo where our society is grounded with conservative values and doctrines that differ from progressing sexual identities and gender expression, inclusion is traditionally viewed in black and white spectrums.
In an 83-minute Spanishlanguage documentary entitled “Amén. Francisco responde” (Amen, Francis answers questions) released on the 5th of April 2023, Pope
stand about rising modern-day issues such as sexual identity, feminism, abortion, migration, church reform, abuse, bullying, loss of faith, and the role of women to the society to ten curious young people.
Among his answers, what sparked public opinion the most is his discussion with a Spanish girl named Celia who introduced herself as a non-binary Christian.
After explaining her gender expression, she then asked if there is a room in the Church for sexual and gender diversity.
The Pope answered:
“Every person is a child of God, every person. God does not reject anyone, God is Father. And I have no right to expel anyone from the Church. Not only that, my duty is always to welcome. The Church cannot close the door to anyone. To no one.”
Immediately after, the Pope criticizes those who use the Bible to promote hate speech and justify the exclusion of the LGBTQ+ movement from the Church.
not have a place within the church; that their beliefs and gender orientations are contradictory to what the Bible teaches. But now, from the statement of the Pope, we are reminded of God’s great love for all. The love that loves beyond mistakes and identities. The love that teaches and corrects but not condemns. The love that saves and cares. The love that is pure and genuine.
1 John 4:11-12 says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us”. Just like the Pope, no one can say he is a devotee and servant of God if he himself chooses whom to love and closes the doors of salvation to those he deems as undeserving. We must keep in mind that we too are sinners and that it is not because of who we are that we are saved but because of who God is.
written in Romans 15:7.

So when we meet people who ask if they belong in the church, let us respond,
Yes, you belong.
Those who do this, he claims, “are infiltrators who take advantage of the Church for their personal passions, for their personal narrowness. It is one of the corruptions of the Church.”

Understanding “Situation-ships” in the Light of DignitasInfinita
There was a time when relationships were neatly categorized on Facebook as single, married, or complicated. But nowadays, there’s a new term floating around among the younger crowd: “situationship.” Curious about its meaning, I asked my students –being a senior citizen myself – and they explained it as being together, yet not quite (Sila na, pero parang hindi pa sila). It seems to imply a lack of commitment, with the relationship being fluid, depending on the circumstances. Hence, the term “situationship.”
I couldn’t help but wonder if this term could also have varying interpretations, leading to different suffixes like “situation-ness” or “situation-mess,” or perhaps “situationability” or “situation-impossibility.” Yet amidst this linguistic pondering, I found myself contemplating a more significant question: in a situationship, is it the relationship itself or the situation that truly matters?
Reflecting on the language and behavior of today’s youth, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the teachings of the Church. In this regard, I believe it’s essential to explore what a situationship-style relationship can teach the Church, consistent with its spirit of synodality.
Enter “Dignitas Infinita” (Infinite Dignity), a recently released Church document dated April 8, 2024, prompted by Pope Francis’ call to address topics closely linked to human dignity. This document explores themes such as poverty, migration, violence against women, human trafficking, war, and digital violence, offering insights into how we should relate to one another in the current times.
FR. VICENTE D. CASTRO JR.,SVD
The opening line of Dignitas Infinita encapsulates the connection I sought to make:
“Every human person possesses an infinite dignity, inalienably grounded in his or her very being, which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situation the person may ever encounter.”
Without delving deeply into the intricacies of the document, I wish to highlight a simple yet profound connection: regardless of the situation, every human person possesses infinite dignity. This conviction, rooted in the belief that all individuals – created by God and redeemed by Christ – deserve respect and love, suggests that even in seemingly transient situationships, young people can still honor the process with love and dignity.
Consider the pop wisdom of a Bini song lyric that pleads: “Huwag muna tayong umuwi, Dito muna, muna” (“Let’s not go home yet, let’s stay here for a while”).
Jesus’ encounter with a young man in Matthew 19:21 comes to mind. When the young man asked what more he must do, having followed the commandments, Jesus responded: “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
The Gospel invites the young man to a deeper relationship and it’s a targeted one: to the poor. This may imply that when Jesus invites to a love relationship, the emphasis is with whom or who is to be loved. The focus is not so much in its immediate completion, no matter how urgent is the need to respond.
And just as Jesus challenged the young man to let go of possessions and follow him, perhaps the Church as a whole should position itself similarly – not merely interpreting Jesus’ words as applicable to today’s situationshipdefined youth alone. The Church’s long held tradition based on the classic model of family is indeed a sacred “possession”. Yet seemingly less stable and new forms of relationship surprise us when they persevere despite the pressures.
One need not forget the declaration “Fiducia supplicans” (Supplicating Trust) issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, approved by Pope Francis. It will be possible to bless same-sex couples but without any type of ritualization or offering the impression of a marriage. The doctrine regarding marriage does not change, and the blessing does not signify approval of the union. Yet the words of the blessing expresses what’s more important for God in terms of relationships: in a brief prayer preceding this spontaneous blessing, the ordained minister could ask that the individuals have peace, health, a spirit of patience, dialogue, and mutual assistance—but also God’s light and strength to be able to fulfill his will completely” (par. 38).
In essence, even those of us with more conservative perspectives should be reminded that enduring relationships often begin with tentative and loosely defined connections. As long as these relationships promote dignity, respect, and peace, young people will continue to echo the sentiment of the Bini song: “Huwag muna tayong umuwi, Mundo’y tahimik sa iyong tabi, Dito muna, muna” (“Let’s not go home yet, the world is peaceful by your side, let’s stay here for a while”).

DOREEN DESPUES
- CALIVARA

tribulation is over, and given so, there is no quick fix. However, there are written reminders one can turn to in moments where the anxiety feels too heavy to carry alone:
the turbulent mind. Tense shoulders relax, tears fall, and faith surrounds us as we are given renewed strength to face whatever comes.
Though a new movie marketed towards a younger audience, the topic of anxiety is nothing new. It’s the sweaty hands before a class presentation. It’s the restless leg bouncing before an important meeting. It’s the shaky breaths drawn before making a final choice. It’s thoughts going haywire before the results are announced. It’s the obstinate feeling before the unknown something and it’s a feeling that even God’s strongest soldiers may feel from time to time. Anxiety is expecting danger to eventually come soon. It’s an invisible battle that’s slowly seen with the many rising discussions on mental health. A common misconception is that anxiety can be fully healed by a single prayer. It’s a human feeling that often lingers around until the
Matthew 6:25-34
“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Here, Jesus reminds everyone listening that we are important children of God. Like how the Father feeds the birds of the air, tends to the flowers of the field, clothes the grass of the field, He knows of our needs and He will provide. Believe in Him. Let tomorrow come and conquer the day with faith that God will always be watching over us.
1 Peter 5:6-8
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
As the Loving Father, God is always open arms for His prodigal sons and daughters. Though prayers may not magically solve the problems one may encounter, a sense of relief often comes through after talking to Him. It’s the quiet reprieve needed for
Psalms 94:19
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Most of the time, we tend to distract ourselves to run away from the difficult emotions we are dealing with. The downside will always be that the anxiety remains – though it may lessen with the movies watched, conversations shared, energies released, and activities done. The moments where anxiety fully consumes us and darkness clouds our view, God is the light that will pierce through it all. With Him, our spirits are refreshed and our hearts are in peace.
Whether one is a Christian youth who sings songs of praise, a working individual grinding for a living, an adult feeling lost in life, or a kid waiting for the Inside Out sequel, we all have our own battles with anxiety. This is a human struggle: feeling worried for the unknown and believing threats are near. But know that it’s going to be alright because it will all be right with Him.

At alam mo ba?

Surging Wheels: E-Bikes
Humans seek convenience because it simplifies tasks, saves time, and alleviates stress, ultimately enhancing their overall quality of life. An essential element of this pursuit is a wellfunctioning transport system, as it streamlines mobility, contributing to more effective management of daily activities. And as the world grapples with congestion, one mode of travel stands out as a game-changer – the electric bike, or e-bike. Well, who would not leap at the chance for ease and efficiency,
and e-bike are one of those major options that signals a promising future of sustainable urban and rural mobility.
Low Maintenance, High Convenience
LTO-free
Limited Capacity:
Compared to other vehicles, e-bike is not a convenient choice especially if the rider or the owner’s priority is distance and endurance in their cycling activities. This is because one of the major drawbacks of e-bikes is its limited range. E-bikes rely on a battery that has a finite capacity, this factor can affect the total distance it can cover.
Locally, here in the Philippines, e-bikes’ continuous rise is becoming a silent revolution reshaping the way people navigate the bustling streets of cities and towns. In a country where traffic is notorious, environmental concerns are gaining prominence, and economic considerations are significant, choosing modes of transportation with a growing emphasis on sustainability, health, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility in commuting habits
In contrast to conventional vehicles, e-bikes boast a simpler design with fewer components and the absence of complicated internal combustion engines. This simplicity not only minimizes the frequency of maintenance tasks but also contributes to a significant decrease in the overall costs and inconveniences associated with keeping the e-bike in optimal condition for riders.
To add, e-bikes generally do not require registration, specifically, here in the Philippines. Under Land Transportation Office (LTO) Administrative Order No. 2021-039, which outlines guidelines for the classification, registration, and operation of all types of electric motor vehicles, e-bikes can operate without registration or a driver’s license if their top speed is below 50kph.
Upfront Expense:
Eco-conscious
Various combination of factors makes a ride an appealing choice for a diverse range of Filipino commuters,
Since e-bikes are incorporated with advanced technology, its initial cost is relatively high. This overshadows its long-term benefits, since most buyers consider a budget-friendly mode of transportation more than quality itself.
Since countries like the Philippines strive to reduce carbon foot-prints, considering e-bikes would be a good option. E-bikes, in contrast to traditional vehicles, use electric motors for propulsion which help mitigate the adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions. Riders can effortlessly cover longer distances, while reducing reliance on traditional fossilfuel-powered vehicles.
This can be considered a convenient factor for users because they can start using their e-bikes without the bureaucratic process of registration such as having to deal with fees and paperworks. The absence of registration requirements makes e-bikes more accessible to a wider range of individuals. However, it is important to note that regulations regarding e-bikes may vary per region. Users must adhere to local laws to ensure safe and legal use of e-bikes.
On the other side of the story, while e-bikes offer a transformative innovation in the context of transportation, it is also important to consider lingering setbacks that await.
While convenient transportation is usually the goto for efficiency and comfort like e-bikes, it is not always the best choice. People might opt for different ways to get around, like walking, biking, or using public transit, based on their preferences, the situation, or environmental concerns. The choice of transportation depends on individual needs, available options, and specific circumstances.

Astounding Savor Flavors: Recipes for Pork Missing Enthusiasts
Porkfect Meats for Pork Needs
With the African Swine Fever (ASF) making its untimely arrival in the grass of Oriental Mindoro, there has been no shortage of pork. High demand for the meat with butchers having nothing to show for it, the populace are starting to woe as the meat increases in notoriety and pricing. Livestock immediately plummeting in value without farmers having proof of those being ASF free, it’s as tough as finding a needle in a haystack. Thankfully, there’s just quite the solution for some corked pork cravings. Here are meats and dishes that can be catered as alternatives to pork.

Lumpiang Shanghai
Rating:
It’s characterized by its pocketable size, making it suitable for parties and gatherings. Despite its Chinese-sounding name, it’s a staple in Filipino culture.
The dish is made by chopping carrots, onions, garlic, and meat (typically chicken or pork) and wrapping them tightly in lumpia wrappers. These rolls are then deep-fried until golden brown, resulting in a crunchy texture.
While it’s often made with pork due to its affordability and flavor, beef and chicken variations offer different taste experiences. Beef provides a stronger aromatic flavor and can be served without sauce, while chicken has a milder taste, allowing
Although Pork is the proclaimed most eaten meat all over the globe, it can be argued that other kinds blend the varieties and offer more than one another in certain aspects.
Take for example beef, it carries a high amount of iron, vitamin B12, B6, and a healthy amount of sodium (which are good for the immune system) according to MedicineNet. Regardless of having higher cholesterol and fat content; it contains far higher numbers of
Adobo
1 Rating:
Adobo is described as the unofficial National Food of the Philippines, deeply ingrained in the country’s culture yet open to creative interpretations. This dish is a cultural symbol and a beloved staple in Filipino cuisine.
Prepared by stewing meat in a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, peppercorn, bay leaf, and oil, Adobo absorbs the savory and tangy flavors of its base ingredients. It’s known for its rich umami taste, often accompanied by potatoes to refresh the palate between bites. Adobo comes in various forms, commonly as a soup or rich in fat, but the dish allows for individual preferences and adaptations.
Both beef and chicken variations of Adobo have their devoted fans due to their distinct flavors. Despite using the same ingredients, they offer surprisingly different tastes, with beef being praised for its robust flavor and chicken appreciated for its lighter, less greasy profile, appealing to health-conscious

Gising-gising
Rating:
It is introduced as the younger sibling of Bicol Express, enticing anyone with its creamy yet slightly spicy aroma. Often enjoyed with rice, it promises to awaken the senses with its capsaicin-infused flavor.
The dish is prepared by sautéing garlic, onions, and chili, then adding coconut milk and shrimp paste to create a flavorful base. Green beans and meat are added to the mix, resulting in a dish that starts with a burst of flavor and gradually mellows out, allowing for a crunchy texture on the meat and beans while embracing the heat of red chili peppers.
While pork is commonly used, ground beef and chicken are also recommended alternatives. Ground beef adds a creamy aftertaste to the dish, enhancing its flavor profile, while chicken offers a larger surface area for the spices and creaminess to penetrate, making it ideal for spice enthusiasts.
vitamins and is safer to eat due to having fewer pathogens compared to pork.
Chicken is another strong contender, being rich in Vitamin A, K, B3, B5, and iron (all good for growth, the skin, and blood) as listed by Foodstruck. Sitting at a spot with lower total fat and cholesterol than pork, it defines itself as a total powerhouse in creating a diet healthy in protein but low in fats.
With that said, here is the list of dishes forked on recommendations based on the alternative meats.
3 Rating:
Kare Kare
It’s celebrated for its unique blend of flavors and unconventional ingredients. Kare-kare is a stew made with peanut butter sauce, simmered for extended periods with vegetables like eggplants, banana heart, and string beans. The meat is cooked until tender, while the vegetables retain their crispness, creating a delightful contrast in textures.
Traditionally served with shrimp paste, Kare-kare offers a mix of savory and nutty flavors, with the shrimp paste adding a hint of the sea. While pork is the most common meat choice, beef and chicken variations offer their own distinct tastes. Beef Karekare boasts a savory flavor complemented by the shrimp paste, while chicken Kare-kare allows the nutty and creamy sauce to mingle with the meat’s mild taste, contrasting with the bold flavors of the shrimp paste.

Kilawin/Kinilaw
Rating:
It is described as a method of denaturing or flavoring cooked ingredients rather than a cooked dish itself. It’s renowned for its sour citrus taste and its ability to preserve food for longer periods. Often consumed as a finger food before a meal, Kinilaw is simple to prepare by mixing ingredients and allowing them to absorb the flavor of calamansi.
While traditionally made with fish, beef and chicken are also popular alternatives, offering a spectrum of flavors. Regardless of the meat used, Kinilaw’s tartness tends to overshadow the meat’s original flavor.
Despite the versatility of Kinilaw, challenges like the African Swine Fever affecting the pork industry in Oriental Mindoro have led to a shift towards other livestock options, prompting exploration of alternative ingredients and flavors.

Shifting Paradigm: Moving forward towards greater
Relentless march of globalization has led to a world where the exchange of ideas, goods, and people know no borders – culture is no exception. The obvious fact that the world is becoming less and less confined to one culture is a sign that commitment to understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives is a must.
Divine Word College of Calapan took a leap to this catalyst by ardently changing one of its goals last July 2023– cultural preservation to cultural sensitivity.
“We need to accept the fact that the culture is evolving and while we changes.”
DWCC, a catholic school institution, is rooted in a specific religious tradition and identity, but it is not limited to catholic students.
There are learners from various faith backgrounds so creating
should feel valued and included is fostering
atmosphere where diverse beliefs are respected.
With this, the institution aims to provide a nurturing environment that respects and appreciates diverse cultures while maintaining a foundation rooted in Catholic values.
Culture is not homogeneous
“There are no foreign lands; only the traveler is foreign.”
Exploring a new culture should not be perceived as encountering something foreign or strange. In reality, the concept of foreignness or strangeness is subjective and lies within the observer, as they are the ones bringing their unique perspectives and behaviors into the cultural context they are exploring.
Simultaneously, it prompts an awareness of the elements present in the new culture. This shift in mindset encourages individuals to recognize their own cultural identity and the distinctive components that shape it. By adopting this perspective, individuals gain a deeper understanding of their own cultural background and the nuances of the unfamiliar culture they are engaging with.
Forethought not an afterthought
Rather than treating cultural sensitivity as a challenge to be managed,
Swipe vs. Flip - Which one will outlast in the learning battle?
APRIL DE CLARO
Book publishing has been in gradual growth given its input in reducing ignorance through pedagogy.
Nowadays, most chalkboards in classrooms are replaced by screens and keyboards. Teaching and learning materials have been superseded by things introduced by globalization and modernity. Adapting the latter meant a paradigm shift with the view that it offers optimal benefits to more efficient and effective teaching and learning processes.
The growing preference in tablets over books will be a specific case to talk about now.
Efficacy: Compressed Convenience
Being a paperless-page tool means a lot. It’s a great catch to have a vast amount of digital contents inside this portable thing, which are available every time wherever you go, right?
In a view of portability, it goes beyond one duty; these are not limited only to provision of texts and visuals. In just a few swipes and taps, the internet’s browsed,
presentation’s made, educational application’s downloaded, and notes taken and recorded. Undoubtedly, a more collaborative, creative, and interactive learning environment is catered to its finest.
Effectiveness: Improved Achievement
In a study conducted by Yvonne Shirley in 2018, titled “Ipads versus Books”, 10 kindergarten students participated to prove Shirley’s hypothesis that “there would be a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension scores when they were using iPads compared to reading from books.”
Shirley let the students read the same stories using the (1) book of choice of students and (2) ipads using an application. The result shows that 9 out of 10 participants scored better in reading comprehension when reading using ipads compared to reading from books.
In addition, in response to the question “In your opinion, does digital or blended learning positively impact student growth or achievement?”
Under the Schoology’s survey of K-12 teachers in 89 countries for the
ALTHEA ANDREI VARGAS
study “The Global State of Digital Learning in K-12 Education” in 2017, of all positive responses, 52% answered “very much” while 43% said “somewhat.”
However, tablets have their own limitations. To become an effective tool in the teaching and learning process, other factors should be taken into account.
Books seem to be not wholly replaceable; these are just partnered with digital devices. With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 4, there should be a continuous finding and seeking of the best types and combinations of learning materials, environments, and approaches.
Modern learning might sometimes require choosing one over another and as a bottom line; it is about choosing the best over another.
this is an asset for transformation.
Embracing it as a proactive consideration, rather than a reactive correction, enables us to flourish in an interconnected community where diversity is not a hurdle to overcome but a valuable asset to embrace and appreciate.
Instead of passively awaiting the negative consequences that might await in the absence of cultural sensitivity, it is imperative that we actively emphasize and underscore its significance.
This is not a call for challenge but acceptance and acknowledgement.
Acknowledgement that we are all unique and not confined in a box.
Shifting from cultural sensitivity does not neglect the protection and importance that the cultural preservation goal embodies. Rather, this is acknowledgement that cultural differences and similarities between people exist.
Look at society with an unfiltered view and you will notice that there is more than what we perceive and what is already there. There are a myriad of cultures and traditions but are behind closed doors. But in the end, we are all living in one society, part of one institution – DWCC.
“May the heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all.”

NO MORE ILLUSION!
THREATS AHEAD: Revealing the True PH Flag Menace
Goodbye Olympics?
Countless hours of training and tireless efforts of Filipino athletes may go to waste just because the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) did not respond immediately to the warning issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2016, a staggering almost eight years from now. It begs the question: why did the said agency not take prompt action on this to reduce the risks coming to the country?
It is so weird that there is no action from the people who are in the position during that time, or maybe there is not enough movement by them that is needed in this case.
Doping scandals involve the usage of prohibited substances by the WADA in competitive sports, which helps the athlete enhance their performance and skills. This is really an illusion of victory—a form of cheating indeed! We are not here to resort to those actions just to win any sports event, especially in the case of the Philippines. Yes, we all crave victory and want to make history, but if we achieve that gold in a deceitful way, that’s really unacceptable.
Imagine the detrimental damage these scandals create to the image of Filipino athletes. There is a tendency that the international public will view us as cheaters or as individuals who rely on drugs just to grab championships, which is not true at all. Take, for instance, EJ Obiena and Carlos Yulo, who made allegations of using those drugs. However, every time they take the test, it is always negative. See how the international committee has doubts due to the bad history of other athletes who have won events but later tested positive for the banned substances. This suspicion becomes a big challenge for the athletes who just bagged gold medals in a clean way; their integrity and reputation as individuals are damaged just because of this.
Going back to the core issue, given that there is a doping report sent by WADA to the PSC, the big question arises: were they not notified of that critical problem? That’s why they did not give an immediate response. Definitely, no! They definitely knew it, but it seems like they did not anticipate the big result of those delays, such as being banned from flying our flag at the opening of the Olympics and other international sports events, and even worse, the possibility of athletes not being allowed to participate. This is really a devastating heartbreak for those dedicated individuals.
It is truly unjustful that our country is facing the consequences that happened as far back as 2016 without even knowing which athlete committed that doping, pushing WADA to take big actions such as banning. It is so unfair for some to also be affected in the fallout from the illusion process of winning a title. PSC reported that they already take necessary movement to make sure their compliance to WADA and to avoid the threats ahead, as they say:
“The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is aware of recent speculations regarding the possibility of the Philippines facing sanctions in prestigious sporting events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, and SEA Games due to alleged noncompliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code.”
Absolutely, that’s your job, but for sure, this issue is not known by every Filipino, which must be known by all. That issue from as far back as 2016 is just being unveiled during this current time, which must have been exposed to the public before. What happened? So now, we demand transparency and accountability on this issue.
