Academic Arts Ensworth students take a minimum of four academic art courses to complete their graduation requirement. With a wide variety of choices, depth of pedagogy, and technologically advanced facilities, Ensworth provides a remarkable curriculum for the dedicated artist seeking an immersive experience or the beginner trying something new for the first time. Students choose classes from several different programs - Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, and Dance - and are encouraged to diversify and explore in order to discover new talents and interests.

Performing Arts Ensembles In addition to their academic arts courses, students can enroll in a number of exciting performing arts ensembles. Ensembles meet as regularly scheduled classes during the school day alongside academic courses. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to use their talents to the fullest while allowing the individual choice of diversifying and deepening their arts experience.

Theatrical Productions Outside of the academic school day, students can be involved in several different theatrical productions staged throughout the year. Rehearsals for the Fall and Spring Play and the Musical are held after school. These productions serve as a great point of convergence for the larger student body as many participate who may have dedicated their academic time elsewhere. Students come together on the stage for productions ranging from the classics, including Shakespeare, to new works created by students and guest artists, in addition to musicals such as “Tarzan” and “The Wiz.” Students can also join our Technical Theatre Crew to help stage manage the overall productions while learning through the hands-on experience of working with lighting, set design, audio, and video.

Auditions Every student can audition for an ensemble or a theatrical production regardless of prior experience. Auditions for the Musical and Fall Play take place during the first semester, while performing ensembles and Spring Play auditions are held during the second semester. Criteria for auditions are specified by the Director of the ensemble and are communicated in advance of the audition date. To inquire about the audition process for a specific ensemble or production, please contact the Director for further information. They will make sure to add your contact to the communication sent prior to audition time.

Creativity Creativity is an essential part of any vibrant and bold endeavor. It does not reside solely in an exclusive gallery; it is to be found amid the complexity of our lives as a light to be lit and kept aglow.
It is a pathway toward a life opened by one’s belief in the potential of what could be. The creative act exists where we personally and collectively strive to grasp the greater idea. By this work, we become active participants in the great conversation of our lives - the dialogue of possibility.
Inherent and universal, creativity allows us to better understand ourselves as individuals within a global experience.
The Ensworth Arts Department creates a supportive and enlightened environment where our students can

discover, develop, and use their talents to the fullest. We encourage beginning interests and advanced abilities alike, with the aim of fostering in each student a willingness, a courage, and a true fascination with the world around them. From pirouette to potter’s wheel, paintbrush to photograph, instrument to prose, theory to performance, we come together as a community

to celebrate our student’s creative expression and rejoice in their search for truth. The Ensworth Arts Department welcomes you and thanks you for being such an important and vital part of it all.

Faculty profiles JIM AVENI
Visual & Performing Arts Department Chair; Director of Instrumental Music “Music is a profound and important part of our lives. The Ensworth music program educates our students about this universal language through the study of music theory, history, performance, and technology. We encourage our students to learn about and perform music that speaks to who they are as individuals, and use their talents for creative expression and discovery.”
CODY ALLEN
Technical Theatre Director “When you go to a play, the opera, the ballet, or even a concert, you may happen to notice the lighting effects, audio effects, costuming, makeup, and the sets the performers are on. All of these things are part of the world of technical theatre. With my recent experience at Disney, I am excited to bring a sense of Technical Theatre “magic” to our many Ensworth productions. I look forward to working in a world class facility such as the Ingram Arts Center, and to helping the students learn, develop, and create their own and unique form of theatre “magic”. The world of technical theatre is vast and constantly evolving and I believe that the Ensworth students have the creativity and drive to become not only proficient operators but world leading designers of Technical Theatre.”
DAVID BERRY
Director of Theatre “The Ensworth theatre program extends into and beyond the classroom. Theatre classes exercise the Core Skills through in-depth scene studies from dramatic literature, including Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, Samuel Beckett, and Shakespeare. Main stage and student-directed theatre productions embrace storytelling as an essential vehicle in a community’s search for truth and as a time-honored forum for exploring and practicing the highest principles with the greatest love.”

CATI BLITZ
Director of Ceramics and Studio Arts “The visual arts program at Ensworth allows students first to explore, then to specialize in three distinctive tracts of study: photography, ceramics, or studio art. We investigate the creative process through idea development, planning and technique mastery within an expansive range of media and subject matter. Art is a synthetic process drawing from all areas of learning, development and experience. My goal is to help my students develop a passion that will sustain them through adulthood, whether as a professional artist, amateur, or collector!”
J.C. JOHNSON
Director of Photography and Digital Arts “As a part of the Ensworth Arts faculty, I strive to provide students with a well-rounded and thoughtful approach to photography and studio art. My hope is that each student begins to appreciate the importance of making intentional images while recognizing the relevance and use of art as a necessary part of our everyday lives. My courses integrate both old and new processes such as analog and digital photography, film and video, art history, and new digital media. I believe all courses should include technique, concept, historical and contemporary relevance, problem-solving, experimentation, and a little bit of magic.”
ELIAS SALAZAR
Director of Choral & Orchestral Music “The choral and orchestral program here at Ensworth is an exciting catalyst for students to explore the age-old mysteries of classical music and to develop their appreciation for one of the richest arts. Through their performances of exciting repertoire and, most importantly, the rehearsal process leading up to performances, our young musicians learn the values of teamwork, musicianship, passion, leadership, responsibility, and reaching their highest potential. Pairing the development of hard work and technicality with the development of emotional maturity and a deeper understanding of humanity through musical growth leads students to become well-rounded, passionate members of our society.” | Ceramics with Cati Bltz

RACHEL TOLBERT | Associate Director of Dance “The Ensworth School of Dance creates a forum for personal development and professional experience by bringing together athleticism and artistic expression in an enriching experience for dancers to connect their mind and body into an art form. It is our mission to both challenge and enlighten students in the storied and ever-evolving art of dance. Drawing from a historical foundation with particular attention to current trends and stylization, we strive to empower students with the necessary tools to be successful and creative in the world of performing arts.” LINDSAY WHITE | Director of Dance “Ensworth dance students grow creatively, physically, and intellectually as they explore a variety of dance genres and collaborate to create works of their own. Whether refining their technique at the ballet barre, lacing up their tap shoes for a percussion-packed class, or perfecting a fast-paced hip hop routine, these young men and women are growing in confidence every step of the way. They are simultaneously challenging themselves as athletes and artists, which is a gift that is quite unique to the art of dance. The dance program at Ensworth allows students of all ages, genders, and abilities to discover that movement is not only a beautiful vehicle for self-expression, but it’s loads of fun, too!”

Jack Alcott Class of 2015 Recent alumnus, Jack Alcott, is in the middle of a breakout year in his young acting career. Upon graduating from Ensworth, Jack won a coveted spot in the acting program at University of North Carolina School of the Arts, from which he graduated last spring. While at Ensworth, Jack took full advantage of the diversity and depth offered by the Ensworth Arts Department. In addition to taking the full range of Theatre classes (from Introduction to the Stage to Acting 3), Jack also spent four years as a member of the Jazz Band ensemble, as well as a semester in the dance studio where he quickly became a featured dancer in Tap and Hip Hop. Jack also took advantage of the Capstone Program to create a 45-minute silent theatre/mask piece inspired in part by the work of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. The piece was developed in collaboration with his Acting 3 cohort and performed for the community in May of his senior year. Reflecting on the role Ensworth played in his development as an artist, Jack says: “I think I really made the decision to be ‘an actor’ while I was at Ensworth. The training I received from David Berry was instrumental in my growth as an actor and my acceptance into UNCSA. But on top of that, the time I spent in the arts building all four years of high school shaped who I am as an artist, creator, and person. From Jazz Band, to ‘Music Video Dance,’ to my senior Capstone project, I found inspiration and joy in the opportunity to make stuff up. To create art and share it with friends. That inspiration and joy still drive me today.” Jack has been busy in the few short months since his college graduation. Not only was he signed by the prestigious Gersh Agency, but he also landed a lead role in the upcoming Showtime Limited Series, The Good Lord Bird, which premieres early this year. The show is executive produced, co-written by, and stars Ethan Hawke, who cast Alcott after seeing a single audition tape--a flattering vote of confidence for a young actor at the start of a promising career.

Aubrey Kazimi Class of 2013 After graduation, Aubrey Kazimi went on to dance with Pennsylvania Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater, and Ballet Arizona - returning to Philadelphia each off-season to continue her studies at the University of Pennsylvania. After suffering an injury in Arizona, she made the decision to return to Philadelphia to recover, complete her degree, and explore dance opportunities there and in NYC. Some highlights include performing at Carnegie Hall, leading in an Off-Broadway production, and working with dance luminaries in Switzerland and France. She also had the opportunity to commission and choreograph a new work by composer, Richie Greene, later performed alongside a live saxophone quartet. When not in the studio or in class, Aubrey works parttime in a new, multidisciplinary, outpatient department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In the spring, she will graduate from UPenn with a B.A. in Psychology and receive a certificate in Pediatric Psychosocial Care from the University of California, Santa Barbara this summer. Following her dance career, Aubrey plans to apply to medical school. “Participating in the dance company at Ensworth was a highlight of my high school experience. The opportunity to dance during the school day complemented my outside professional training and enabled me to stay in Nashville with my family rather than accept scholarships to ballet conservatories with less academic strength. Without the opportunities made available to me at Ensworth, there is no way I could successfully pursue a professional dance career as well as attend an Ivy League university.” | Ensworth Dancers at the 2019 Dance Concert
