Writers become writers by letting their senses, and then their imagination, take flight. We use this week to hone the skills of listening and noticing as we explore the city with notebooks in hand. We go to malls, parks, and an art museum. The essays we read aloud (at the beginning of the day) are fun, short, and compelling. It is a great companion course to Reading and Writing in the Woods or it can stand alone. Either way, you will be pleased with the work you do, and you will have a notebook that you will want to keep forever. Picture books serve as the springboard into a theatrical adventure, giving your child the opportunity to develop fundamental acting skills while working as a team to bring stories to life! Exercising their natural creativity through movement, vocal work, games and improvisation, campers portray beloved storybook characters (as well as new favorites!) while gaining confidence and presence onstage. In Storybook Adventures, students will learn basic theatre terminology and skills that will help them as they progress into future theatre endeavors.
Fairy Tale Frenzy DATES: Week 1 (June 4-8), Week 3 (June 18–22) 5-7 years
Big Bad Wolves, Red Capes, Magic Beans, and Glass Slippers! Step inside your favorite stories in a drama camp full of magic and adventure! Using movement, vocal work, improvisation and creative drama techniques, students will stretch their imaginations and develop their acting skills. In Fairy Tale Frenzy, the teaching artist will select a fairy tale that the students will stage at the end of the week. Through this process, students will refine their actor’s toolbox of body, voice, and imagination.
Rooted in folklore, fables, myths, and legends, your child will grow their understanding of storytelling and acting fundamentals while elevating one of these classic tales to new heights on the stage! Working closely with their classmates, students will develop characters, explore plot, and create staging based on the words from the original story. Enhancing understanding and increasing knowledge of the theatrical process, Staging Stories provides students with the tools to build the essentials of acting, commitment, and teamwork.
Intro to Improv DATES: Week 2 (June 11–15) 8-10 years
Everyone can tell a good joke, or share a zinger of a story, but not everyone can do it on the spur of the moment! In this class, students will work as an improv ensemble, or troupe, to create uproarious scenes and play improv games that will keep them on their toes and their audience rolling in the aisles. Students will work together to learn new ways to use their voices and bodies expressively, create bold characters, and discover the fundamentals of improvised comedy–and will have plenty of laughs along the way!
Myths & Legends DATES: Week 3 (June 18–22) 8-10 years
In this class, your child will get a little epic as they explore the power of myths and legends, elevating larger-than-life characters and adventures to new heights on the stage. As they develop their own theatrical version of a selected story, students could find themselves dramatizing a courageous quest, creating a mammoth monster, or discovering the dynamic qualities of the world around them.

Have you ever watched a movie based off of a favorite book and found yourself aghast at the changes made to the plot or the characters? Can a movie really ever capture that which makes a story beautiful? Can an adaption tell the story better? This class explores these questions as we read classic and modern literature and analyze the films and other adaptations that they inspired. Authors and works studied vary according to student and instructor input, but may include Shakespeare, Austen, Tolkien, and/or Shelley. CREDIT: Semester Upper Course Credit in English

The Morocco program takes place near Marrakech, which allows the students to be quickly immersed in this bustling ancient city. The program begins in Casablanca, then moves to the Marrakech area, where the group partners with a local secondary school near Asni, a small mountain town in the high Atlas Mountains. Students work on a service project that has been planned by the local community and live with local families in order to learn more about the Berber culture and history. After saying goodbye to the community, the group heads to the Ouarzazate, the door to the desert, where students explore the Skoura desert oasis by camel and on foot. Min. 10, Max. 15
The Tanzania program takes place near Arusha in Northern Tanzania, which is about 32 miles from the Kilimanjaro International Airport and surrounded by Tanzania’s most important national parks and game reserves. The trip begins in Moshi and then moves to Karatu, where the group partners with Banjika Secondary School students on the primary Community Project, designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the local community. The trip includes a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive with friends from Banjika Secondary School into the crater in hopes of spotting lions, elephants, rhinos, wildebeest and more.

The Spain program begins in Madrid, where students take in the world-famous museums and landmarks of Spain’s capital city. From there, the group visits the medieval city of Toledo that has been preserved and remains visually unchanged from its founding many centuries ago. The southern cities of Córdoba and Granada, the confluence of Jewish, Christian, and Arabic culture in Spain, are next on the agenda. After exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Andalucia region, students set off for the coastal city of Alicante, where they spend the bulk of the trip. Students are intimately connected to the Spanish culture through homestays, activities, and the observance of the festival of Las Hogueras de San Juan, which culminates near the end of the stay.
