ENG British Literature: Literary Adaptations

ART Studio Art 1

Rising Grades 11–12

This course provides students with a sequential exploration of various visual arts media. Through in-class exercises and formal assignments, students develop technical skills in the classic disciplines of drawing, painting and printmaking. Assignments are designed to advance a student’s skills in direct observation while understanding the depiction of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane. Projects include the use of graphite, charcoal, pastel and/or ink drawing media; water based painting media and relief printmaking. The creative process is supported by instruction on the use of appropriate reference materials, readings and discussions of historical, contemporary and multicultural art.

Have you ever watched a movie based off of a favorite book and found yourself aghast at the changes made to the plot or the characters? Can a movie really ever capture that which makes a story beautiful? Can an adaption tell the story better? This class explores these questions as we read classic and modern literature and analyze the films and other adaptations that they inspired. Authors and works studied vary according to student and instructor input, but may include Shakespeare, Austen, Tolkien, and/ or Shelley.

Shakespeare Boot Camp

Reading & Writing in the Woods

Grades 9-12, min. 4 / max. 10

Grades 9-12, min. 4 / max. 10

Master an audition monologue. Develop a toolbox for working with Shakespeare’s text that you can carry with you for years to come. Whether you are a first time actor or more experienced, this week-long short-course will give you the opportunity to set and achieve goals, and to get the workout that you don’t have time for during rehearsals. We will learn exercises designed to strengthen the actor’s body and voice, and explore a physical approach to harnessing the dynamic power of Shakespeare’s language. Participants should memorize an instructorapproved monologue prior to camp.

What do the woods beyond our fence smell like in the morning? How does the light fall in the forest hour by hour? Take a few days to rest in the woods this summer, cultivating a bond with literature, each other and the land. Beginning with the woods, rivers and farmlands outside our own back door, the week includes an overnight camping trip. Our readings, like the course itself, are short and sweet and include selections from American wilderness writers such as John Muir and southern agrarians such as Wendell Berry.

Reading and Writing the City Life Grades 9-12, min. 5/max. 12 Writers become writers by letting their senses, and then their imagination, take flight. We will use this week to hone the skills of listening and noticing as we explore the city with notebooks in hand. We will go to malls, parks, and an art museum, for starters. The essays we read aloud (at the beginning of the day) will be fun, short, and compelling. It is a great follow up to Reading and Writing in the Woods. Or it can stand alone. Either way, you will be pleased with the work you do, and you will have a notebook that you will want to keep forever. INSTRUCTOR: Myra McLarey,

Survival Chinese

Introduction to the Stock Market

Grades 9-12, min. 6, max. 12

Grades 9-12, min. 4 / max. 10

Traveling to China? Want to give Mandarin a try? Starting Chinese language study or looking for a quick refresher? Join us for a week of fun, games, exciting language learning and cultural discovery in Survival Chinese. We will learn to introduce ourselves, ask questions, count, buy things, and even bargain while experiencing Chinese music and culture together. This is the perfect crash course for anyone interested in going to China or jump-starting Mandarin study. Designed for students with little or no previous exposure to Mandarin Chinese but can also serve as a quick refresher course for more experienced students.

This course is a fun, interactive experience designed to provide students with an understanding of how the basic securities markets function. Starting with the concept of what a “stock” is, we examine why a company decides to issue a stock. From the perspective of buyers, we discuss why individuals choose to own stock, the key characteristics they look for when deciding which stocks to buy, and the general financial goals they wish to achieve. We distinguish stocks from bonds, explore mutual funds and index funds, and also run a brief simulation of a stock purchasing game. INSTRUCTOR: Danny Wright,
