Telemedicine,

a step into the future or the unknown?

T

he year 2020, has not only changed the decade-old methodologies of perception at things but also provided a complete change in the functioning of things which were run according to set guidelines and rules. As the world shifted to the online mode of work and education, the new trend of over the internet or mobile started taking effect. A lot of industries started offering their products/service via the internet and this brought in a new revolution as what seemed very difficult to execute and achieve was done in a matter of few months. No one can deny that the online system is still not perfect nor equivalent to the physical form of work, it has its plethora of advantages when compared with physical presence or form of work. One such industry which no one imagined would run so efficiently and smoothly over the mobile or internet is Telemedicine. Telemedicine refers to providing care and treatments to the patients when they are not physically present in a hospital or clinic. This has its pros and cons but looking at it from a macro level, this has changed the face and functioning of medical treatment and paved the way for new possibilities and enhancements in how a patient receives medical treatment. Telemedicine and its effects Telemedicine has made us look at medical treatments differently from what they previously were, as now one can avail best doctors and medical treatments at the benefits of sitting in their home without having to worry about missing appointments, the driving in traffic and of course, the large waiting queue at the hospitals/clinic. Moreover, therapy sessions, etc. are also conducted online with ease of comfort and without delays in appointments. With medical treatments provided over mobile, one can avail the benefits of having treatment from the best doctors around the globe or any city, with most hospitals/clinics having an app which you can download and provide the necessary information and paperwork which not only saves time but also makes it easy for the hospitals/clinics to keep a track record of the patients, so they do not have to worry on the next appointment for the prescriptions and other important documents, reports, etc. Thus, what before was a tedious task involving a lot of checkpoints and hassle has been simplified and provided in such a beautiful and smooth process that it does not only enhance the patient’s experience and satisfaction but also enhances the time management and performance of the doctors. Although Telemedicine has its drawbacks when it comes to providing smooth and efficient medical treatment, looking at the ongoing pandemic and the circumstances we are facing, the little troubles can be overlooked as they are being worked on effortlessly to provide a hassle-free and best-in-class treatment to all the patients. Telemedicine, the medicine of the future. Telemedicine still being a new practice to provide medical treatment does not give us a lot of information to break it down further and evaluate it step by step, but that does not hold it back from becoming one of the best adaptations and a solid step of overcoming the problem of providing hasslefree and efficient medical treatment to the patients. The long-term effects will unfold over time, but if it solves the short term we are facing because of the pandemic, then can it be called a bold yet revolutionizing step or a step into the unknown. www.theenterpriseworld.com | 17

PATIENTS IN NEED OF DIAGNOSTICS TESTS ARE AVOIDING PATHOLOGY LABS DUE TO COVID FEARS: DOCTORS

M

any pathology labs have reported drop up to 70% of routine tests during the COIVD 19 pandemic. With fear of the second wave of COVID 19 being around the corner patients are still delaying their diagnostics tests. The reason behind the delays boils down to fear: According to a survey 70% of consumers say they are very or somewhat concerned about contracting the coronavirus if they go to healthcare facilities to receive care for issues not related to COVID-19. This fear is translating to lower rates of infectious, chronic disease diagnostic testing and preventive health check-ups. To reverse this troubling trend, pathology laboratories must take immediate action to inform patients that deferring essential diagnostic tests can pose greater health risks than the risk associated with contracting the virus itself. To help, we have summarized both the potential precautions that your laboratory should consider to help assure your patients, as well as the communication message for communicating your laboratories safety protocols to patients. Here is 22 | Jan 2021

how to help your patients overcome these fears. TOP 5 things you can do to help patients overcome their fear of getting pathology tests done during COVID: 1. Separate your COVID-related testing services from your NON COIVD testing. Patients do not want to walk into the lab to give COVID sample or neither encourage this because it has a huge negative impact on NON-COVID patients. NON COVID patients seeing lab personnel in PPE kits collecting COVID samples adds fuel to their fears. In fact, NON-COVID patients will often ask, I hope that your lab is not collecting COVID samples. So, assure them that your lab is not collecting COVID samples and you only do it from home collection or inform them of some other strategies that you may follow to mitigate the infection risk as follows: • Location: If possible separate the rooms for COVID and NON COVID sample collection. This may not be possible if there is a space constraint. If there is a space constraint, there look at an option to establish special hours for high-

risk patients. This strategy could be used for scheduled preventive or follow-up visits for senior citizens, expectant mothers, and the immunocompromised. • Staff: Finally, patients may be reassured to know that you are separating COVID testing and NON COVID testing staff so that those who test COVID positive patients are not also testing NON COIVD patients. 2. Focus on home collection service Home delivery services have increased across all industries due to COIVD. In Pathology also both COVID and NON COVID patients are more comfortable with home collections of samples, laboratories must focus on building capacity for home collections. The laboratory may have to hire and train more phlebotomist. The phlebotomist is the face of your laboratory, so it is important the phlebotomist visiting the patient’s home is well trained in blood collection and customer service. The phlebotomist must be presentable and be given a smart home collections kit. The patient will not be visiting the lab in case of home collection hence the phlebotomist is the face of your laboratory. It is especially

important that Phlebotomists are caring and understanding while drawing samples to make the patient feel as comfortable and at ease as possible. Also speed of home collections will play a key role in customer satisfaction i.e. how fast can your phlebotomist reach the home of the customer after the test is requested. 3. Strong IT systems Since home visits will be higher during the pandemic strong IT systems need to be built to offer strong customer service outside the laboratory. There needs to be an app for the customer to books their tests, view their appointments, make their payments, and review the services. The phlebotomist must have an app to capture the sample details so the pre analytical errors are reduced. Finally, there should be a system to email the reports to the patient since the patient will not prefer visiting the laboratory to pick up the reports. 4. Continuously sanitize public spaces (in plain sight to patients). Pathology laboratories know the value of a clean work environment.

To ease patients’ minds, take this one step further and ensure you are cleaning public spaces—and that you are doing so in plain sight of patients. For instance, you can: • Establish hand sanitizer stations; • Remove magazines, brochures, and other frequently touched objects from common areas; • Disinfect waiting area chairs, door handles, etc. continuously throughout the day; and • Emphasize that you are sanitizing rooms and equipment between patients. 5. Feature images or posters of the safety precautions your laboratory has put into place in the waiting area and sample collection area. This strategy has been also utilized by non-health care organizations such as restaurants and shopping malls to build confidence in the customer’s mind that all safety precautions are being followed. In its campaign #AapKiSevaMein Big Bazaar show the precautions put in place to keep customers safe and minimize the risk of contracting Covid-19. Patients are putting their lives as

risk due to the fear of getting infected by COIVD at medical facilities and the above steps may help calm them and save their lives by taking important diagnostic tests. By following the five steps enlisted above you can make your patients feel safe to get lifesaving tests done. Abhinav is the Managing Director of Accurex Biomedical Pvt. D

ubai is the largest and the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates. Known as the global city, Dubai is a popular business hub in the Middle East. Established earlier as a fishing village in the 18th century, Dubai is today the global transport hub for passengers and cargo. Dubai gained the growing importance of a port from the movement of the steamers of the Bombay and South Persian Steam Navigation Company, which paid five visits annually from 1899 to 1901. But later on, these visits increased to as much as 21 times a year, and that made Dubai an important port and it also gained a preference for trading. Since then, Dubai has become a growing center for regional and international trade, which is where most of Dubai’s economy comes from. Apart from trading, it also derives its economy from the tourism industry, aviation, real estate, and financial services. The governor of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, used the revenues from trading to build the infrastructure of the city. With this, an airport of sorts was constructed in Dubai in the 1950s. In the early 1960s, Dubai became a lively port for the trade of gold with some 1968 imports of gold at about €56 million. The gold was in the vast majority of re-exported. In the year 1966, more amount of gold was shipped to London and France than anywhere else in the world. Later, an oil era began in Dubai, when oil was discovered in the territorial waters of Dubai. The first oil field was named ‘Fateh’ or ‘good fortune’. Thus it was the slow transformation of Dubai into a business hub. 26 | Jan 2021

Dubai experienced a property boom from the years 2004-2008, as the city started becoming oil-reliant. With the large scale construction taking place, Dubai is becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. This property boom was driven by some of the megaprojects like the Palm Islands, The World, Burj Khalifa complex, Business Bay and many more such projects. The city is home to many skyscrapers. With these developing real estate projects, Dubai focuses and derives most of its economy from the tourism industry. Dubai is also the world’s thirdlargest diamond trading hub and has seen an increase in the trade of rough and cut diamonds since 2001. It is said to be a buying hub for the consumers of diamond jewelry. Apart from diamonds, Dubai is also a hub for gold trading, with India as its biggest buyer of gold. Along with a strong trading industry, Dubai is also

Over the past 30 years, life in Dubai has seen incredible growth in terms of its economy, lifestyle and everything else. The development in Dubai started off in the early 1990s, but things started taking shape from the early 2000s. What caught the world’s attention was the development of the Palm Jumeirah, a huge reclaimed island in the shape of a palm tree. Dubai made another bold statement by opening The Atlantis- The Palm Resort in 2008 at the top of the Palm trunk. While the whole world was drowning in the wave of recession, these developments in Dubai showed it to the world that Emirates was emerging and it was open for trade and business. Nearly 6% of GDP in Dubai is derived from oil and gas, even then it has managed to double its economy from the 2000s. Dubai’s growth rate is higher than the growth rate of China or Asia, the tiger economies. The Atlantis

Oncquest Lab is revolutionizing the health care sector in India, with its top-notched diagnostics services. Oncquest lab, promoted by Aditya C Burman, started its journey as a part of Dabur Pharma in the year 2002 and as molecular oncology diagnostic laboratory and R&D focused entity. In the Year 2007, Mr. Aditya Burman with his scientific skill and industry insight, re-established its new independent identity -Oncquest Laboratories Ltd- and made cancer diagnostic business its main focus.

Dr. Ravi Gaur | Director & Chair MAC | Oncquest Lab

s per the recent reports from ICMR, the number of cancer cases is likely to increase to 15.7 lakh per annum by 2025. The rising number of cancer patients is one of the most worrying thing in the healthcare sector across India, as well as the globe. The pandemic in 2020, has shown us the importance to develop the healthcare sector and make it stronger to face any kind of global health issues. While treating the patient, what comes first is the proper diagnosis on which the way of treatment gets decided. Adoption of advanced technologies and Innovations in Oncology ,has played a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of cancer patients. And it is like a messiah for cancer patients. Keeping this need of the Indian Health Sector in mind, 28 | Jan 2021

Oncquest is now one of the largest diagnostic labs in the space of molecular pathology, with a strong credential in pharmacogenomics, companion diagnosis, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, hematopathology and with a comprehensive menu of laboratory assays with unparalleled service. Today the laboratory handles over 15000+ samples a day with great precision and has earned its reputation for clinical excellence in the Indian market. Dr. Ravi Gaur, who is Director & Chair Medical Advisory Committee of Oncquest lab shared his thoughts on the current industry scenario and his journey at Oncquest. The Early Days Dr. Ravi says, “I strongly feel that every individual deserves the best of healthcare irrespective of the cost. Also, I believe that the integration of conventional wisdom, refined by emerging technologies, is a must to cater to the new generation’s healthcare needs. Oncquest’s approach & understanding of advanced genomic technologies, its

application for precise cancer diagnosis, and mission to make advanced assays affordable & available to masses, was well aligned to my thought process.” Most of the diagnostic providers start from basic pathology offerings, but Oncquest started as an advanced pathology lab. It was when he started integrating the advanced technology & high skilldriven pathology services with basic pathology and bridging this gap with similar levels of skill, quality & focus, the graph zoomed, and growth took a fast upward swing. Cutting through the complexities To chisel a beautiful statue, you first need to hit the rock, which is what counts! Similarly, when starting a venture, you face challenges, which make up for the successful times of your organization. And tackling them with innovation and efficiency sails your boat! Oncquest has also faced and now also facing and tackling well with the hurdles. With the fast-changing diagnostic industry and so much happening on a day-to-day basis, the toughest challenge for Dr. Ravi was to put his vision on paper. He believes that plan should be short, simple, and have a realistic set of goals. The more concise & focused plan is, the more likely you can achieve your goals. A few of the other major challenges were building the right team with similar vision and skill, balancing quality and growth, and address the rapidly changing consumer’s expectation. It is very easy to be different but very difficult to be better.

And then the growth started… From its first avatar, as an R&D focused entity, Oncquest has evolved into a National reference laboratory in the field of Oncology, and more recently into a multiplatform Pathology Services provider and hospital lab management. Today they have various size 40 plus labs spread across the country, catering to a complete segment of pathology testing. Also, they have their presence in many neighbouring countries includes Nepal Bangladesh, Tashkent, and Sri Lanka. Recently Oncquest has emerged as one of the major B2C labs with a special focus on home collection and providing services in tier 2- 3 cities. They are one of the major private labs doing Covid RTPCR and allied testing, across the country. Despite high competition and diverse challenges, the company has been growing 25-30% year-on-year. Factors behind Oncquest’s longstanding success Mr. Aditya Burman’s quest for next-generation diagnostics and Oncquest’s early adoption & utilization of clinically relevant genetic analysis, including sequencing technologies has resulted in many “first to market” assays, which are now the backbone for developing several treatments and monitoring protocols especially in the field of oncology & infectious disease. Advance technologies and global quality systems at Oncquest, have ensured that it stays ahead of the curve, resulting in its association with some of the most advanced

hospitals, super specialists, clinicians, and research organizations in the country. Dr. Ravi says, “I am a strong advocate of a personalized approach in healthcare. Today we are better known as final opinion or difficult diagnosis solution provider. We focus more on DNA /RNA-based assays which helps the clinician not only to deliver target base therapy but also helps in a better understanding of the progression of the disease.” Dr. Ravi strongly believes that, for continued and sustainable success in the current fast-evolving technology-driven world, Innovation has to be an essential part of any organization’s DNA. Better diagnostic tests are needed to improve the quality of healthcare and for benefit of patients. The diagnostic providers should keep adding the technology & newer assays at regular intervals and ensure affordability too. Dr. Ravi Gaur – A leader with a futuristic vision Dr. Ravi Gaur, joined Oncquest in the year 2009. He is a qualified Onco pathologist by profession and has over 30 years’ experience in the field of Pathology and Health care management. He strongly believes in setting up the new trend of pathology practice in India by introducing advanced assays and equipment, new biomarkers of wellness, predictive & prognostic algorithms, disruptive technologies, and Integrated ICT including AI. He has worked in the past with some leading diagnostic companies like erstwhile Pathnet India (a venture of Gribble’s pathology, Australia), Piramal diagnostics, and www.theenterpriseworld.com | 29

served in the Indian Army too, which helped him to take challenges head on and think innovatively for a better outcome and personalized customer service. Building ideas, building teams, and building business over time are what excites him the most. He loves creating something out of nothing, and he loves it even more when people say ‘that is a weird idea’ but then a few years later, they come back and say, “Weird though, but I knew it will work”. As Dr. Ravi says, “That is very satisfying.” Dr. Ravi has learned over time that, if for greater business success, one should have their heart in business, and business in their heart. He says, “I have also learned that every phase of building a business is new. When I look back to where I started and who would believe we would be here, where we are now. If you believe in what you are doing, you will find a path forward. Ensuring and watching people progress, making a difference in their life is the greatest achievement. “ Talking about the responsibility of an entrepreneur, he says, “The biggest responsibility of an entrepreneur is to build a sustainable, sellable, and scalable plan. An entrepreneur should play by the rules but be ferocious. One cannot always predict what to do or what problems will arise, but that’s part of their journey. They must strike a balance between optimal outreach and overkill. They should learn to read “What consumers do not say” and be open to continuous improvement. For success, they should empower them with patience, aim for perfection, and prioritize their passion. To have a dream is important but the true 30 | Jan 2021

entrepreneur should be a doer.” The Driving Force Dr. Ravi attributes his Credit for his success to his team. Caring about people is the most primal thing. But caring should be in actions, not just words. Caring creates trust, and trust creates loyalty. Loyalty is what makes good people stay and take good care of your business We generally talk about and focus all our effort on our customers, but Dr. Ravi thinks, we should focus on our employees first. It is very important to build a safe place for them, fulfil their career dream, and create an environment that treats people fairly and appreciates their work. He says, “I insist on integrity, commitment and treating everyone with respect. Inspiring people to realize they matter is a must for greater success. I am committed to helping people reach their full potential.” Humans are complicated, and the challenge is getting a team of 300400 people, all going in the same direction. Healthcare needs strong teamwork, if everybody does not know the direction we are going in, it will knock you off soon. When you have the right people and a team, who believes in you and you have faith in them — that is an Organization. Without a well-knit team, no organization can achieve success. Over the last decade, the team at Oncquest has relentlessly worked with a single mission – “Perform to Excel and Care”. Dr. Ravi’s take on the current health industry scenario It is a well-known fact that the development in the country’s health

status has not kept pace with its economic development. Our performance, particularly on health equity and quality issues has been far from satisfactory. There are vast variations in health-care facilities and care. Our priorities seemed to be setting up high-cost tertiary health institutions at the expense of the primary health centres. The recently launched Swachh Bharat and Ayushman Bharat schemes, combined with various national health programs, offer a good hope of addressing these asymmetries. However, I would like to appreciate, the promptness & some good decisions of the Government authorities, and the way private healthcare providers came forward to join hands with the government to address Covid pandemic challenges. It is a very commendable effort. It proves that ensuring affordable, quality health care can be made accessible to all ,if all providers work together in a structured way. Also, we need some strong but practical regulations to ensure quality and satisfactory services. The future of healthcare is shaping up in front of our very eyes with advances in digital healthcare technologies, such as artificial intelligence, genomics, telemedicine, robotics, or nanotechnology, etc. We must familiarize ourselves with the latest developments to be able to control technology and not the other way around. The future of healthcare lies in working hand-in-hand with technology and healthcare workers have to adopt new healthcare technologies to stay relevant and better clinical outcomes in the coming years.

Qualilife Diagnostics Specialist diagnostics in Infections Dr Roopa Viswanathan Iyer Founder & MD | Qualilife Diagnostics

A

decade ago, there was a lack of microbiological diagnostic services to small nursing homes and laboratories. There was need of state of art technology microbiology laboratory for such facilities. The concept of adding newer techniques in microbiological laboratories was given least importance in most of the established health institutions. There was a need to innovate and improvise the microbiology laboratories in the event of emerging and re-emerging infections. A microbiology lab was at the mercy of the corporate management to enhance services and they were always lacking the funds to do so. The idea of Qualilife Diagnostics was born to fill these lacunae and it took shape in 2010.We decided to have the latest technologies to meet the demand and addition of

technologies were made as per the requirements. Every few years the world saw outbreak of infections and Qualilife wanted to lead the way for the solutions of diagnostic challenges during these outbreaks. There was major lack of awareness amongst the healthcare workers in smaller institutions regarding the importance of microbiological services. They were unaware of the technologies available for rapid diagnosis of diseases like MultiDrug Resistant (MDR) tuberculosis and other MDR bugs. Infection control protocols were non-existent in such institutions. We focused on timely reports laced with top quality based on recent guidelines. We kept ourselves abreast with the times and added on technologies as per need. We supported “make in India” technologies and exploited the

resources to the maximum. Our main aim was to provide a point of contact where the communication to the health provider was prompt for effective patient management. We started off with two specimens per day and gradually increased to almost hundred times of that. Our customer size also increased hundred times. Today we have about 500 happy and satisfied customers. Our success is attributed to committed staffs who strive for excellence at every stage. We have managed to get recognition by way of accreditations and approvals from authorities for various tests. Complacency is non-existent in our dictionary. We are always trying to update and devise means to better ourselves. High end microbiological and www.theenterpriseworld.com | 33

molecular diagnostic techniques are our forte. As per need, like in epidemics and pandemics, we rise to the occasion and add technologies required for prompt diagnoses. We try to concentrate on rapidity and accuracy of results and prompt effective management. Innovations and newer technologies are promptly seized and utilised for overcoming diagnostic challenges. Syndromic approach for treatment of infections is the way forward and multiplex arrays will help in saving many lives. Individual outcome for each disease is unique and hence personalised medicine and genomics are the future. Tailored treatment plans and guidance will prevent, diagnose and treat critical illness with more precision. As an entrepreneur, our endeavour was sustainability, saleability and scalability. These were the long term goals. We had to develop our services to top notch levels. There was tremendous scope for continuous improvement. Each day was a new day with new ideas and new challenges. It was a “LOOK FORWARD” to new roles and new responsibilities. New energy was garnered to acquire new expertise. Committed team development and system enhancement was our main focus. Success was a contribution of team effort and each team member had a significant part in the glory achieved. The key achievements of our entrepreneurial journey were job 34 | Jan 2021

opportunities that were created. Even In the times of COVID 19 pandemic and lockdown we could continue to provide job opportunities to many. We could contribute to society by providing diagnostic services of world class level in COVID19 pandemic. We have been able to save lives with our timely interventions. Our team is very committed and we give them opportunities to grow. Staff motivation is achieved with time to time In-house training and constant updates. Their health and safety is given prime importance and we believe “Happy and healthy staff lead to happy customers”. Newer technologies and newer challenges are thrown at them to keep them focussed. We have our customers coming back to us after one experience and they refer their relatives and friends too. They have lauded our transparency and have valued our opinions. We have managed to keep their trust with compassion. Diagnostics in India is world class but is accessible only to urban India. Rural India has unorganised diagnostic system. Sophistication of technologies has still not reached them. Point of care technologies which are affordable, easy to operate and require less skill is the main requirement in rural India. These can be addressed by “Made in India technologies” which can be reasonably exploited. They can solve a lot of health problems of rural India. Telemedicine which involves use of telecommunications in healthcare can also provide superior medical expertise and healthcare services to rural India.

“No contact” patient management was most useful during this pandemic and lockdown. Preventive and tailor-made treatment plans can help us live longer and lead safer, more productive lives. All stories involving entrepreneurs and start-ups inspire me and I regularly read to know their stories. I draw inspiration from them and try to incorporate them into my scheme of things. “Never give up” is the motto that everyone must follow. “Every night is followed by sunlit morning” is what keeps me going. I look forward to each new day with more issues and challenges to tackle and the satisfaction that follows is beyond words and measure. Any invisible bug can become a huge problem at any time, as in the current pandemic; we microbiologists are trained for them. We are ever vigilant for the outbreaks and as entrepreneurs we have to be on guard for any unforeseen problems to arise. We have to be equipped with a mindset to tackle them. We have to be ready for a stormy day all the time. The pandemic has given us time to think for ourselves and opened new perspectives. We have to grow as individuals and better our own expectations. Who cares for “rat race”; it is always going to be there. Holistic individual growth is what matters, so hobbies, passion have taken precedence. Physical, mental, intellectual and social wellbeing is of paramount importance for me, along with professional summits.

Arjun Ananth Director & CEO

MEDALL Advancing the boundaries of diagnostics

I

nnovation’s part in healthcare has extended a lot in the recent 20 years. Our capacity to analyze, store, and share data related to patients’ health is straightforwardly attached to improved innovation. The utilization of innovation builds supplier capacities and patient access while improving personal satisfaction for certain patients and saving the lives of others. We’re moving into a time where doctors can see patients distantly and precisely analyze patient’s issues, even in the most rustic regions, through telemedicine. The role of good diagnostics in time plays a vital role in the initial step in any kind of treatment. The global pandemic has highlighted the need for full-powered diagnosis solution providers that helps to get appropriate data on patients’ health as well as helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Ananth, Director and CEO at Medall, he shared his views on the current industry scenario and Medall is empowering the change. • What inspired you to Medall? Please brief us about Medall? I have always cherished the opportunity to improve the quality of people’s lives. Medall is South India’s largest integrated diagnostic services provider and is a wonderful platform to make a meaningful impact on the prevention of diseases and improvement in the wellness quotient of the public at large.

triggered the growth of Medall? It was the opportunity to serve people at or below the poverty line through the partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh. More recently, it was the opportunity to facilitate the testing of the population for COVID. Medall was the largest tester for COVID in the south. • How has the business graphs changed since the foundation? Can you share a few statistics? Medall has the been the quickest to gain scale in its industry.

• What were the initial challenges you faced?

In the same context, Medall, South India’s largest integrated diagnostic services provider is accelerating the transformation in the healthcare sector with its cutting-edge and advanced offerings.

I was already familiar with Medall as I represented the owner fund on the Board of Medall for 4 years before coming on as a fulltime CEO. Medall had all the building blocks in place. The biggest challenge was timing. Just as we made the best-laid plans, Covid stuck, postponing our implementation.

In a conversation with Mr. Arjun

• Which was the point that

• What is the reason behind your centers’ long-standing success? It is the customers. We value the patronage. Many of our customers come back to us. It is this loyalty www.theenterpriseworld.com | 37

| Interview with The Enterprise World

we consider to be the bedrock of our business. At Medall, we believe that our interactions need to be engaging and not transactional. • What are the services Medall focuses on? How are your services different from those in the market? We focus on diagnostic services – blood tests, scans like MRI, CT, USG , X-rays, etc. We offer a onestop-shop for all diagnostic needs, be it blood tests or scans. We also now offer the opportunity to reverse metabolic disorders like diabetes etc. based on blood tests. All this is delivered to the customer via a class-leading app. • How do you decide to take the business a step further in terms of your services? We will continue to expand into technology as we seek to reposition Medall as a health tech company. • Is there any new addition to the list of products/services? Anything exciting you would like to share? We just launched Medall Blume, a holistic and science-based subscription program to reverse chronic lifestyle diseases like diabetes, PCOD, fatigue, obesity, etc. We are excited by this product as it seeks to combine the best of science and technology, with continuous monitoring via a state of the art app, our expertise with nutritionists, pathologists, doctors, psychiatrists, and the rooting in tradition. • Can you please brief us about 38 | Jan 2021

your professional experience? I am an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a top 10 rank holding chartered accountant from India. I started my career in investment banking and then went on to be one of the early members of Nike’s founding team in India. Later on, I was the CEO of a large industrial company and also donned various leadership roles in finance for large publicly listed firms. • How do you look after your employees? What makes your team unique? We believe in caring for our employees. We give roles that are challenging, encourage employees to push the limits, reward, and recognize them when they do so. We promote a very entrepreneurial culture; we encourage our employees to take on more. We have a flexible work culture and we do have a well-defined work from home policy. We identify high potential employees for special training. Most importantly we are highly informal and anyone can walk into my office for a discussion. • Kindly brief us about your views on the current healthcare industry scenario. The industry is gradually recovering post-COVID. The last few months have been focused on COVID management and testing. The awareness about one’s health and comorbidities has increased many folds during this period. Also the emergence of telemedicine. Going forward, I believe, many

will look for a self-care option with guidance from experts. • Whose business story do you find the most inspiring? It has to be Apple and Nike. Both companies are at the forefront of customer delight and technology. They define what the customer needs. Steve Jobs and Phil Knight have to be admired for the way they did this. • Which is the most inspiring quote you have read? “You can’t connect the dots going forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever”. • Constant vigilance- a need or a strategy? Please share your views. It is a need. One has to be vigilant about his or her health, one needs to be vigilant of the surroundings and one needs to be connected. However, vigilance should be related to awareness and not paranoia. • It’s a rat-race out there. How do you cope with that? One must enjoy the adrenaline. Life is an adventure sport. You learn to enjoy it. If everything stayed the same, where is the excitement? That would be boring.
