Sci-Hi grading system revised for distance learning ‘New normal’ E

Sci-Hi extends 1st quarter

iming to resolve student backlogs brought about by Typhoon Ulysses, Honorato C. Perez, Sr. Memorial Science High School extends the first grading period for this School Year 2020-2021, in correspondence to the Department of Education’s academic ease memorandum or OUCI-2020307. According to Section 4, Clause H of Memorandum OUCI-2020-307, Quarter 1 is extended until December 12, 2020, while Quarter 2 would start from January 4 to February 27, 2021; Quarter 3, March 1 to April 24; and Quarter 4, April 26 to June

11.

In an interview, the school principal, Leonora De Jesus, said that this is called academic ease and that since [the school] is still in the adjustment period, [the extension] is an approach to give students enough time to do their activities. “Synchronous classes will only be up to the first week of December for the first quarter. The second week will be for asynchronous. After that, December 14-19 will be devoted to the INSET or In-Service Training in preparation of your teachers for the second quarter, so that means that [December 14] will already be

the start of your vacation,” De Jesus added. Besides the first quarter extension, the school also postponed Week 6 asynchronous deadlines until November 20 to provide Scielinians time to bounce back from the aftermath of the typhoon, subsequent to the [then] suspension of Week 7 tasks. This year’s 21st tropical cyclone, following last week’s Super Typhoon Rolly, displaced 18,874 families in Central Luzon, as reported by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Field Office 3. ight written works, four performance tasks, and four reflection papers per subject will be the only bases for Scielinians’ quarterly grades this School Year 2020-2021, in line with Order No. 31 Series of 2020 of the Department of Education. According to Leonora De Jesus, the school principal, at the end of the eight-week quarter, no examination will be given but instead, the students will submit a portfolio counted as a performance task that compiles the said activities. De Jesus also elaborated that the distribution of the percentages of written works and performance tasks vary per subject, wherein Math and Science have a 50-50 percentage split while Language subjects, Araling Panlipunan, and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao have 40-60. On the other hand, performance tasks in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health have a higher weight of 70%, leaving only 30% for written works. The grading system is the same for both online and modular modalities. To avoid overwhelming the students, the school also implements a rule of submission of only one written work per week and one performance task, with reflection, every two weeks.

ccording to De Jesus, in the new learning setup, teachers are expected to be more creative and flexible in assessing the students’ learn-

ing while still adhering to the principles of quality assessment practice. On the other hand, De Jesus pushes for the formation of independent learners who can study and work on their assessments on their own and are proactive in updating their teachers about their self-conditions, learning progress, and challenges encountered during remote learning. “Isang aspekto ng independent learning ay imanage mo ang iyong sariling oras, in the sense na hindi mo rin kakalimutan na bigyan din ng pahinga ang iyong sarili. Bigyan mo ng oras ang lahat ng iyong mga asignatura o mga subjects para lahat ng ito ay iyong magampanan,“ advised the principal to Scielinians. De Jesus also stressed the importance of rest for the students’ health, which is why activities are posted at the start of the week and must all be submitted on Friday, except during special circumstances wherein extensions are given.

midst the scrambling rush of global leaders queuing up for the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, the Philippines’s participation in the World Health Organization solidarity trials may be unmitigated music to one’s ears, but its early celebration would only lead to a false sense of security, and relaxing our vigilance is a tragic mistake that we must avoid. According to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, the country has a ₱73.2-B target budget to pay for the large-scale vaccination of 60 million Filipinos, which is nearly 60% of the 110 million population (as of July), and that it would cost an estimate of ₱1,200 per person. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, in support of Dominguez, added that herd immunity (the communal resistance to a disease due to an immune vast majority) is around 60-70%

by WHO definitions and is, therefore, achievable by the Philippines. Despite this, with multiple pharmaceutical giants averaging their vaccines to a 90-95% potency, it is not yet the time to paint the town red with our hairs let down. If anything, it is the time to keep the infection rate low because of not only the vaccines’ scarcity and cost but also because of our unawareness to their efficacy, which will (hopefully) be remediated by said trials-and-errors. We need to remember that the availability of said vaccines is not the end to this grim pandemic. It is the support of one another, the theory of altruism, which will end it through the successful vaccination of a crucial majority. This is still a marathon, with the end much closer than ever, and it is our responsibility to cross the finish line, altogether.

Lost in Transition I

f you are a frequent Twitter user, you may have come across tweets with #AcademicFreezeNow, heeding the Department of Education to call the school year off. At first glance, it seems to benefit both students and teachers, but the reality is that it is nothing but a band-aid solution to a relatively larger problem our country is facing. Academic freeze will only shut down the jobs of

most academic workers. Currently, more than 700 schools have shut down due to the pandemic and that equates to thousands of educators rendered jobless. How much more if all the schools in the country close down? Academic freeze is a very risky card to play– one where the costs outweigh the benefits. It is with utmost necessity that we must not see things like these in black and white.

Band-aid solutions can only last for so long and cards that are too risky to play should not have been drawn in the first place. By pushing for academic freeze, we only allow ourselves to be lenient towards the incompetence of the government and its negligence in responding to the pandemic. Instead of #AcademicFreezeNow, we must push for #LigtasNaBalikEskuwela and #SolusyongMedikal,

the bare minimum of what the government should have been providing in order to conduct safe physical classes. We cannot be locked in our homes forever, waiting for the pandemic to subside like a headache. Our education must not be stagnant, for stagnancy is a vile thing, and we might end up getting lost in transition to the new normal we are living in.

he Department of Education has a getaway car and there is no more room left for us. Prior to the department’s cancellation of the notorious ₱4.2-M ham and cheese bidding, Education Secretary Leonor Briones unwelcomely ‘advised’ schools to dry soiled self-learning modules (SLMs) by using a flat iron. Those who sleep soundly amidst back-to-back typhoons (that would later on cause ₱9-B damage on 2,929 public schools) are the only

ones who can afford these detachments from reality. This was not the case for the father-and-daughter duo, Ramon and Mecaella Jacob, who both died on November 2 while in retrieval of the latter’s school supplies, in fear of Typhoon Rolly ruining such. Two weeks later, Education Undersecretary Anne Sevilla said that her department would fund the replacement of damaged SLMs. It is painfully obvious that DepEd’s latest plan to replace said SLMs has been hatched to once

The education secretary's insensitive remarks were definitely not the first, and if only she kept her mouth shut, then perhaps she would not have put her foot in it the way she always does. It is about time for the department to finally listen to the demands of its constituents and take us along for the ride.

Scielinian Gallema bags home 16 golds of glory C

hristine Joel Gallema secured her 16th gold as she remained supreme in the 2020 SMART/MVPSF Region 3, Online Taekwondo Interschool Speed Kicking and Poomsae Championship, October 21-22. The Kyorugi champion fortified another gold in her achievements after executing a clean freestyle using her techniques within a minute. Kyorugi, or sparring, is a discipline of Taekwondo wherein two individuals battle in freeform. Despite the on-going pandemic, the 13 year old managed her way to the top also in the Poomsae event taking home another gold. With only 2 years of being a taekwondo athlete, Gallema top-notched her match-

es with 13 golds, 5 silvers and 1 bronze in kyorugi while 3 golds, 5 silvers and 3 bronzes in poomsae. "There are no shortcuts to anything worth achieving. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Almighty Father above, who guided me throughout this journey of mine and the people behind my achievements: my stepdad, Honesto Cantuba, my mom, Jonalyn Cantuba and my family who believed and supported me in my sport, my coaches, Sir Johann & Ma’am Geka Ocampo of NETTC, for passionately molding me into what I am today. Lastly, NETTC family and Sci-high for all the love, support and appreciation. I am and will always be grateful to have you all,” Gallema said.

Gallema didn’t lose her focus as she has virtual trainings via Zoom and with the right time management and discipline, at the same time with her online studies, she emerged victorious in both ways. Gallema will encounter her next fight in the 2020 Online Milo Little Olympics National Taekwondo Poomsae and Speed Kicking Championship, November 21. By Nina Concepcion
