Some events are run by groups of Etsy sellers, directly sharing their creativity with their community. Others are run by us, with the goal of celebrating incredible makers. Either way, you’re sure to have an incredible, inspiring time!


Welcome! A big virtual hello from all of the Brighton Etsy Team and welcome to our 2021 Spring Lookbook! We are really missing our in-person events and we want to make sure we can make it really easy for you to find perfect purchases for all your upcoming anniversaries, birthdays, house sprucing and celebrations. I absolutely love the community of makers and artist in our local area. So supportive and diverse. I really miss our monthly coffee meetings and events. How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop? Forests are my favourite places in the world. I take the family for walks in the countryside as much as I can. name “Silvina” in Latin means “from the woods”, so I wanted to incorporate that to the name. And the three trees in the My Papercut Forest logo symbolize my three children. They are the air to my lungs.

MARTHA MITCHELL Brighton, UK What’s your favourite medium to work with? My favourite medium is the good old trusty pen and paper! It is how all my illustrations begin, I use a really tiny nibbed pen so I am able to get lots of detail in my drawings. Where do you make your items? I am lucky enough to share the studio with one of my friends who is a lampshade and lighting designer maker! We are a few streets away from the sea and it is a lovely space down a little Mews in Hove! How do you spend your downtime? When I am not at the studio or looking after my two year old I like to spend time at my allotment or in my garden. I have just moved house so am looking forward to sorting out the garden this summer!

LAURA DANBY Brighton, UK Why did you start your Etsy shop? My handmade business began in 2016 when I was given a wonderful gift of a screen printing course. I spent the weekend madly hand cutting paper stencils with a scalpel to print as much as I could until they disintegrated! I loved the coverage of sharp flat cover I was never quite able to achieve with paint. On this course someone asked to buy a half finished print of a fox. The seed was planted and I began to dream if I could make a living from this new passion. It took me a few years to make my dream happen, but it is now my full time job! What’s your favourite part of being an Etsy seller? I love the community of amazing creative people, plus the individuality, dedication and care that goes into every product. I’m so lucky that I get to hand make all of my products from a lovely little studio at the bottom of a Mews in Hove, which I share with the marvellous Martha Mitchell Design. You can see all the way down to the seafront from the top of our Mews, and when it’s sunny it’s absolutely glorious, I don’t think i’d ever get bored of it. Why did you start your Etsy shop?

I originally trained as a sculptor working in bronze, stone and wood so I never expected to fall in love with working with fabric and threads. How do you spend your down-time? I started my Etsy shop after making jewellery for over a decade and was ready to start selling my designs to an audience who appreciate the craft of handmade products. Where do you make your items? During the lockdown last summer and I couldn't use my shared studio space anymore so I converted my humble garden shed. I converted it myself and I LOVE it so much I won't be going back. I

love working with recycled silver. It's a soft metal, so it's easy to shape and manipulate. It works perfectly with my botanical designs because it allows me to create beautiful curves and flicks. It's also great that it is 100% recycled. Where do you make your items? I make my jewellery in my garden studio. It's a wooden cabin which looks out onto a wild garden. I can hear birds singing whilst I work. When the sun's out, I relax on the grass during my lunch break. It's the inspiration for many of my designs. KATIE Brighton, UK Why did you start your Etsy shop? I wanted to create a platform for customers to view and purchase my products easily. How did you come up with the name for your Etsy shop? I started working as a seamstress repairing and altering clothing and the name fitted perfectly. When I created my Etsy shop I really wanted to keep the same name. How do you spend your down-time? When I'm not sewing, I love to bake, I usually make brownies or a big chocolate cake! If I'm not baking I enjoy spending time at the seaside with my boys, nothing beats time at the beach.

SARAH DARE Brighton, UK What’s your favourite medium to work with? That's really hard for me to pick just one medium! I use acrylic, wood and felt within my work, as they all have different properties and combine in interesting ways. Where do you make your items? I design my products at home, and use a workshop in the center of Brighton that has a laser cutter. I use the cutter to create all the different component parts of my jewellery, then at home glue the tiny bits together, add a chain and pop it in a gift box. RENATA KOCK Brighton, UK What’s your favourite medium to work with? My main material is vegetable tanned leather which is free from chemicals and chrome. It’s a versatile material to work with, and I make the absolute maximum use of every hide - there is no wastage as all off-cuts are saved and used in other pieces. Where do you make your items? My studio is in my home in Hove, which is very convenient if inspiration comes to me in the middle of the night. What’s your favourite part of being an Etsy seller? Developing new designs and growing my range of Etsy products gives me a creative outlet. I absolutely LOVE being part of the creative crafting community! What’s your favourite part of being an Etsy seller? It's hard to say whether I prefer being an Etsy seller or an Etsy buyer... Etsy is bursting at the seams with quirky, interesting and unique creatives, which inspires me to push myself to come up with new / better ideas, while treating myself along the way! AMELIA BAINBRIDGE Brighton, UK What’s your favourite medium to work with? I love beading and wire work, it's fiddly but way more rewarding and customisable. My favourite pieces at the moment are gold with pearls incorporated into them. Pearls on everything, especially as we approach summer, they remind me of the beach! Where do you make your items? I wish I could say I had a fancy studio but I make everything in my living room. I do have an office but I just prefer to be social and it's my favourite room in the house. What’s your favourite part of being an Etsy seller? My lovely customers! The feedback and reviews that people take time out of their day to write is just everything. I also love the sense of community and how other sellers are so supportive, whether it's advice, a purchase or a share there's so much positivity.
