Get Your Ounce of Prevention Cold and flus are gearing up for their favorite seasons! Adults get an average of 2-4 colds per year, but here at Eureka Market we work hard to help people bring that number down. You can be lesssick by becoming more-healthy.

You have questions, we have answers. Just ask. For the past four years we have been proud to offer free health consultations with Jae, a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Supplements Specialist. Jae has been practicing as a consultant for twenty years. Staying current on health information, research and products is a priority.

Prepare your body by eating a healthy whole-food diet, making sleep a priority, getting regular exercise and making time to do things that you enjoy. Minimize sugar and stress, and consider supporting your immune system with supplements:

Jae can address diet, supplements & lifestyle with a holistic approach to good health.

Vitamin D is essential. It increases overall immune function, stimulates production of antimicrobial peptides, and lowers your risk of contracting the flu. It will also work to prevent the sinking mood many people experience in the winter.

Health concerns, current supplementation regimens, longterm goals and complete course corrections can be discussed. No question is too big or too small. Jae is available WednesdaySaturday from 10-4. “Be proactive about your health. You have more power to be whole and healthy than you think.” -Jae

Probiotics modulate your systemic immune system and aid in the production of antibodies.

Gut health is the epicenter of a healthy immune system. Amalaki is one of the most potent and complete sources of Vitamin C. It comes from gooseberry grown in India and provides critical support to the immune system. Choose amalaki over ascorbic acid “vitamin C” for a comprehensive, bioavailable form of vitamin C. Elderberry is rich in antioxidant compounds that protect cells from damage and infections. It contains Vitamins A, B and C, as well as amino acids that can help prevent disease and support the immune system. Olive Leaf works to inhibit viruses by stimulating an immune process in which cells ingest pathogenic organisms. On guard as a preventative, it can successfully fend-off infections and gives the immune system time to manufacture antibodies. You Belong Here

There is Something You Should Know Need to move more? Have you considered joining the Community Center or trying out some classes? Eureka Market is a big promoter of the CC and we keep schedules on hand for customers. A wide and growing array of classes are available, and a fully stocked Fitness Center is open every day of the week but Friday & Sunday. The fitness piece of good health cannot be ignored. Check out this four-minute Ted Talk titled, “How the Food You Eat Affects Your Brain”. This concise little animated video cuts to the chase and lays out good information about the foods you choose and how they help or hurt your brain. “Power Foods for the Brain” is the name of the seventeen-minute Ted Talk by Dr. Neal Bernard. He presents research that highlights the best foods for improving and maintaining brain health. He also reinforces that brisk walking three times a week for forty minutes is enough to prevent brain shrinkage in the hippocampus, which houses the memory center functions in the brain. Welcome William! We recently added a staff member who has a decade and a half of experience in the natural foods industry. A transplant from Fayetteville and Ozark Natural Foods, one of William’s goals at Eureka Market is to dramatically increase our offerings of local and regional products. We are fortunate he joined our team! 2

Keep an eye on our Bath & Body department! Freya is bringing in new items based on customer input and her own research to find top-quality products. You’ll find more Deal Breakers available and newbies like compostable toothbrushes, low-waste packaging items, rich facial oils, DIY ingredients and natural cosmetics.

We have increased our offerings of low-sodium soups. We now stock LS quarts of Pacific Red Pepper & Tomato, Butternut Squash, and Tomato. Cans of Wolfgang Puck LS include Garden Vegetable and Tomato Bisque. You can reduce sodium by selecting low-sodium soups and then adding salt to your bowl, if needed.

Daiya has nailed it with their dairy-free New York Cheesecake. It’s also glutenfree and vegan. More flavors will arrive for holiday feasting. Al Dente Plant-Based Pastas sport beautiful colors and a high-protein profile. Made with chickpeas and lentils, they have a lot more to offer nutritionally than standard semolina.

World Centric compostable plates, bowls, flatware, and cups (for hot and cold!) let you make an impact on the plastic trash heap that continues to grow. Made with non-gmo corn and discarded wheat straw fibers. Our bulk bins have some new gems hiding in there: Organic “Everything Bagel” Cashews and Garlic Almonds from Tierra Farms (remember, they are our favorite because they dry-roast their nuts and have no added oils). Also, organic tri-color quinoa, organic jasmine rice, and dark chocolate covered cashews have joined the party.

Bone Broth is all the rage right now. Why? It’s packed with calcium, magnesium and phosphorous (which is, no surprise, good for bone health). Being a source of gelatin, it can break down into collagen in the body and increase levels of this important protein in the joints. It may not only work to maintain healthy joints, but with regular consumption it may improve active arthritic conditions. Additionally, its high in the amino acid glutamine, which is protective and healing to the intestines. Bone broth is beneficial to those recovering from illness, and particularly stomach disturbances. Pacific offers organic quarts and cup-sized sipping broths. Bonafide Bone Broth in the freezer is a top-notch organic product that comes derived from chicken or beef.

Simple and Soothing Chicken Soup Folk remedy? Placebo effect? Why does chicken soup make us feel better when we are sick? It turns out there are several reasons and they are being studied: • Research by Dr. Stephen Rennard showed that chicken soup inhibited the migration of the most common type of white blood cell, neutrophils, which defend against infection. He theorized that inhibiting consolidation of these infectionfighting cells in the body reduces upper respiratory cold symptoms. Cold symptoms are a response to cells accumulating in bronchial tubes.
