by Clayton Stallings,

This Issue Is dedicated to The Pioneering Women of The New Missouri Cannabis Industry...

T

he September issue is, in part, dedicated to all the incredible women who are taking leadership roles in the “birth” of Missouri’s new cannabis industry. After all, it was Mother Nature who originally blessed mankind with the female flowering cannabis plant, so it seems fitting for women to continue to lead the way as this emerging industry takes hold of our state. Women not only nurture and raise their own families, but they are simultaneously carrying on the tender loving care of Mother Nature by helping bring back one of her oldest remedies. The entire team of The Evolution Magazine salutes all the women who have poured their labor of love in to the last few stressful months of license application perpetrations and those who have worked years to lead our state to a long-awaited end of cannabis prohibition. They have endured countless hours to fight for all Missourians to not only have patient access to holistic healing, but also for all others to be able to finally grow their own medication. Many of these women who helped get us to this point will also carry us the rest of the way through the licensing process and beyond in primary leadership roles. Thankfully, there are many more “feminine flower freedom fighters” than we could possibly fit into this one publication; however, we have selected a few standouts to focus on within this issue. We are extremely grateful to have finally reached this monumental time in history, which undoubtedly had much to do with the brave women who helped forge the way. Their dedication, passion and determination has driven them to the forefront of recognition as influential cannabis leaders. Thank you, to the women featured in this issue and to all the women who are now, and will continue to be, involved in leadership roles within the cannabis industry. Wishing all applicants the best of luck!

Will Changes in Missouri Marijuana Policies Reduce Arrests and Incarcerations? by Linda Redford, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Contributing Writer

issouri has some of the toughest marijuana laws in the nation, and these laws have contributed to high incarceration rates and costs to Missouri taxpayers. Recent events signal a shift toward decriminalizing marijuana in the state, but the impact on arrests and incarcerations may be slow to evolve.

Missouri’s revamped justice code went in effect in 2017, allowing persons arrested for first-time possession of up to 10g of marijuana to pay a $500 fine but avoid incarceration.1 This was followed in 2018 by Missouri voters approving Constitutional Amendment 2 to legalize medical marijuana. Persons with a qualifying medical condition and certification from an authorized physician may purchase up to four ounces (or approximately 113g) of dried, unprocessed marijuana per month and grow up to six plants.2 While these are steps forward in decriminalizing marijuana, it remains to be seen whether reductions in marijuana possession arrests and incarcerations will follow. Current data suggest they may not. In 2018, more offenders were incarcerated in Missouri for felony possession of illicit drugs than for any other offense category.3 Information on the number of offenders incarcerated for marijuana possession is not readily available, though it is known that nationally almost half of drug possession arrests are for marijuana. Since marijuana had been illegal in Missouri for decades and the consequences have been severe, it is likely that many of the 6,200 offenders now in Missouri prisons for drug offenses are there for possession of marijuana. Possession of greater than 10g of marijuana without medical certification, multiple possession offenses, sale, or trafficking still result in hefty fines and seven years to life in prison. The reduction in penalties for first-time offenders and legalization of medical marijuana has so far had little effect on reducing arrests or incarceration rates nationally.4 In Missouri, the number of persons incarcerated for drug offenses increased 12.8% 10

September 2019

between 2013 and 2018 (from 5,534 to 6,242 respectively).3 Likewise, the number of persons arrested for marijuana possession has continued to climb rapidly. Possession arrests in Missouri increased from 17,615 in 2014, to 21,277 in 2016. Missouri now holds the dubious distinction of being fifth in the nation for marijuana possession arrests.5 The impacts of these arrests and incarcerations disproportionately impact certain communities and population groups. It is a fact that persons of color are more likely to face arrest for drug possession than whites, even though usage rates are roughly similar. A less known fact is that much larger percentages of women are incarcerated for drug possession than men. Approximately seven percent of crimes among incarcerated men in Missouri are for drug possession compared with 20 percent for women. In 2018, 53 percent of all new female admissions to prisons in Missouri were for drug offenses.3 Setting aside the impact arrests and incarceration have on the lives of individuals, families, and communities, the financial costs to the citizens of the state are significant. Every incarcerated person costs the state of Missouri and its citizens at least $22,000 per year. For offenders who are older or have chronic conditions, the costs often more than triple. Given the far more serious consequences of other substances, criminalizing marijuana is counterproductive. Alcohol, methamphetamines, and opioids represent far more serious threats to public health. Opioids accounting for hundreds of deaths in Missouri every year, and methamphetamines have lifelong adverse impacts on individual health. Opioids have a legitimate place in the medical treatment of some forms of acute pain and symptoms associated with end-of-life, but they are highly addictive and have become one of the more misused, abused, and deadly drugs among patients and on the streets. Marijuana, on the other hand, has medicinal properties that might reduce the need for opioids without the side effects and risk of overdose. Information is not currently available on the

numbers of persons arrested for marijuana possession who are medically eligible for its use. Ironically, many persons currently incarcerated for marijuana possession may have chronic conditions that qualify them for the legal use of marijuana. Access to this data is needed to inform further policy changes. Enlightenment relating to long vilified substances comes slowly, and the criminal justice system is often the slowest to change, but there are positive signs of change. Urban prosecutors in Missouri have announced they will no longer prosecute most low-level marijuana possession cases. This represents a major repudiation of past practices. Further, the overwhelming support from voters on legalizing medical marijuana in Missouri indicates the tide of public opinion is shifting. Most importantly, those suffering from chronic and debilitating conditions now have available another alternative for relief, one that is safer, with fewer side effects, and with far less addictive potential than many current options. WELL-MIND

ANXIET Y DISORDERS AND MEDICAL CANNABIS ... by Amanda DiMartini, Contributing Writer

As society continues to suffer from increased levels of mental distress, anxiety disorders continue to become more prevalent, and medical cannabis is a very soughtafter anti-anxiety medication amongst this population of patients. Anxiety disorders that have shown to be improved with medical cannabis include General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome, and Trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling). Interestingly, research is beginning to emerge that suggests that an imbalance within the endocannabinoid system may play an important role in the expression of both anxiety disorders and depressive disorders. Also, because cannabis acts as an adaptogen to balance out and restore any imbalances in our endocannabinoid system, symptom relief is a very real possibility for some patients. While our ancestors utilized herbs, including cannabis, to help alleviate anxiety, caution is advised. Consuming large amounts of cannabis and using strains 12

high in the cannabinoid THC may trigger paranoia, heightened anxiety, and, in some cases, feelings of panic. Studies have indicated strains with more CBD than THC may be more effective in calming anxiety. CBD has also been found to help combat anxiety symptoms. Recent research has also revealed the importance of recognizing each plant’s terpene profile, in addition to its cannabinoid

s we have seen, increasing numbers of people are affected by disturbances in mental health. Anxiety disorders, alone, are starting to become part of everyday life for many people. Many people rely on prescription medications to help them cope with anxiety symptoms. Missouri psychiatrists, who choose to certify, are now qualified to provide patient certifications for the relief of symptoms related to mental and emotional disorders. Additionally, physicians can certify patients who have a chronic condition, normally treated with a prescription that could lead to physical or psychological dependence, when a physician determines that medical cannabis could be effective in treating the condition and would serve as a safer alternative to the prescription medication. Given the above-mentioned options, there may be symptom relief on the horizon for many patients in Missouri with anxiety disorders.

counter-productive effects when utilized in large doses — particularly high THC content. Additionally, great caution should be used if you are consuming edibles; read your labels, and always remember to wait two full hours before consuming more edible products as they may have a delayed and intense effect. It is important to note that adverse overmedication effects will not harm you physically but may create an anxiety response, and you’ll have to wait until the effects diminish. It is said that sublingual drops, mints, or oral sprays (absorbed into oral tissues very rapidly) are an effective approach for those with anxiety — the effects of this medicine should be felt in within 10 minutes and last 4 hours. If you receive a physician certification and choose to incorporate medical cannabis as a part of your wellness routine, it is important to know the properties of your medicine and to start new methods with conservative doses so that you may receive optimal benefits while avoiding the overmedication experience. It may be helpful to keep a medicine journal and note the effects of the products you try. Please make sure you stay informed and consider your wellness options carefully. Take care and be well!

content. While some plant terpenes such as linalool (also found in lavender) may demonstrate a calming effect, other terpenes may excite the mind and be counterindicated in those with anxiety. As we move forward with Missouri’s medical cannabis program, patients will have the opportunity to explore different medicines and delivery methods in a well-informed manner. It is advised to know your medicine and to start with low doses such as 2.5 mg, especially if you suffer from anxiety. It’s very important to remember; this medicinal option can be very therapeutic at low doses (micro-dosing), yet it demonstrates

NEW BUSINESS PROFILE OF MONTH ►

MANTIS 9 PLANS LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT CULTIVATION

here’s no doubt that Jon Lowe, of Mantis 9, has left a big impression on his community over the past several years as a Kansas City firefighter, community leader, and cannabis activist — but it’s going to be his team’s low carbon footprint in cultivation that will set them apart in Missouri’s race for cannabis licenses.

September 2019

“I have been a part of Normal KC and New Approach since the first time we tried to get medical marijuana on the ballot back in 2015,” said Lowe. “I did everything from collecting signatures, attending meetings and socials, to asking and encouraging local businesses to become petition signing locations. I helped collect signatures at parades, post offices, and anywhere I could. Fast forward to the next election cycle when the laws finally changed, and I found myself traveling back and forth to Colorado to network and learn, while at the same time looking for the right people that believed in the same methodology as we did.” With his wife, Nicole Lowe, and longtime friend, Willy Dahms, by his side as business partners, it wasn’t long before they connected with the rest of their team. “We eventually came across AJ’s family-owned farm in Pueblo, CO, and they quickly became our consultant for our cultivation,” said Lowe. “Anthony and Adrianne Mollins, owners of AJ’s, have been premier cultivators in Colorado since 2014. Their cultivation center is a one-of-a-kind underground facility. It’s known as a GeoLab by GroGeo, but they like to call it “the ultimate sungrown-indoor grow room environment.” What makes this grow unique is the minimal carbon footprint and sustainable practices through growing underground with the use of geothermal capabilities to help cool their building in the summer and heat it in the winter. They use translucent panels for natural sunlight and shades for light deprivation. AJ’s has been providing clean cannabis to high-end dispensaries and even business clients such as Willy Nelson’s brand Willy’s Reserve. Willy’s Reserve is a premier brand that hand selects cultivator’s that meet the highest-quality standards to meet their extensive sustainable pesticide-free practices. Lowe said, “We will be practicing these same techniques in Missouri.” They will also be using living soil and biological control for integrative pest management (IPM) such as predatory mites, ladybugs, rove beetles, and probably their favorite based on their company’s name —The Praying Mantis.

Dispensaries ● Cultivation “Dedicated to providing an environmentally friendly product, Mantis 9 uses all natural, sustainable methods. Instead of using harmful chemicals, sprays and pesticides, we use Praying Mantis, lady bugs and living soil to cultivate a premium product.” ─ Jon Lowe, CEO “We will use all parts of the cannabis plant from foliage that is used to feed our beds to brewing teas to help feed our plants. These practices bring so many other microbes and healthy bacteria that are excellent for growing premium grade cannabis. The best part is we do not have a huge upfront cost, and we can keep our prices down for patients and stay competitive against these large indoor/high-cost outfits,” said Lowe. Along with their extensive grow knowledge, Anthony and Adrianne Mollins started the Sierra Nevada region’s first medical cannabis delivery service in their same facility. It was their team’s extensive experience in other areas of the cannabis industry that sealed the deal on the partnership. For instance, there is their compliance manager Jenny Germano, owner of ICS Consulting, who specializes in compliance. In fact, she was just notified last week that after five years of applying, she had been selected for a workgroup for the MED in Colorado to help write and establish rules and regulations in Colorado. Then there’s lab/extraction manager Luke Ennis, a chemist who has set up and managed over five MIP labs. Ennis has performed research and development for Fortune Soil and Gas Company with a focus on advanced bio-refracting. He has also been a site implementation director, off-site coordinator, and an officer under Colorado MED Operators license. He has won multiple awards for distillates and CO2 vape oil. When it comes to their security, it was a “match” made in heaven that “ignited” their relationship with Fifth Meridian Group, a fitting fireman owned and operated security firm that is handling all their security needs. Their Chief Medical Manager Nasha Winters will oversee and run their patient advisory board. Winters is a sought-after luminary and a global healthcare authority in integration cancer research who consults with physicians around the world. She bridges ancient therapies with advancements in modern medicine in the digital era. Then there is their Quality Assurance Manager Steve Ottersberg, who has a master’s in biochemistry with a research focus on drug design biochemistry, toxicology, and physiology. Ottersberg taught biochemistry board reviews to Naturopathic medical students for six years and brought together the passion for human health and biochemistry.

I asked them ‘why,’ the most common theme was, ‘Well, that is what they tell me to do.’ Throughout my life, I have learned that just because someone or something has been doing something a certain way for a long time does not make it right. Most patients would be open to trying cannabis if there was not this big stigma or history of fear-mongering involving cannabis. I see a big need for people in Missouri. I have encountered many people that talk about how cannabis has saved their life or someone close to them — the same people who never would have thought cannabis was more than a recreational drug. Hearing these stories and meeting mothers of children that told me their disabled child’s day was extremely better when taking cannabis as medicine really touched my heart to get involved. “Lastly, I love educating people on the rules and regulations in Missouri. This is a huge role I have naturally adopted through educating patients, other businesses, and even city officials on Missouri’s regulations. If you are going to be a leader in this industry, you better do your homework and know what you’re talking about. The compliance side of things is vast, and there are so many moving parts. I strive to understand our whole operation from the ground floor up. We want Mantis 9 to be known for being a staple in our communities, and an organization that always has a patient focus first, always compliant, and true leaders/pioneers in this state.” Lowe’s accomplishments as a civil servant is a mirror image of his team’s dedication to bringing the highest quality medicinal cannabis into the same communities he protects.

With a stacked team of experience, my last question for Lowe was, what made him want to start this whole process of applying for a license in the cannabis industry? “Several reasons,” answered Lowe. “As a firefighter making runs, I saw people in their homes taking a cocktail of meds and when www.Mantis9.net September 2019

would be totally amiss if I did not start this article out by thanking the countless members of our great cannabis industry. Their compassion, professionalism, and most of all, their immediate friendship made all the difference in the world to the outcome of this veteran’s life. Thank you to all of you; each of you know who you are. There are too many to thank individually, but my mind is filled with emotion and love for each of them. Thank YOU!

Commander Thomas W. Mundell is a former member of the United States Army. He served two combat tours in Vietnam and received the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star for Valor, Air Medal for Valor, Army Commendation for Valor and Four Purple Hearts. He was shot down 11 times and rendered over 164 enemy combatants harmless during his military and civilian career. He served as State Commander for the Department of Missouri Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Chairman of MAVO (Missouri Association of Veteran Organizations). He has been a sustained member of the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA), Missouri Cannabis Industry Association (MCIA) and New Approach Missouri since 2013. He completed over 120 hours of Cannabis related courses and has experience at the cultivation, manufacturing and dispensary levels. As a well-respected member of the veterans’ community, Mundell was instrumental in passing medical cannabis in 2018 by influencing and educating Missouri senators, representatives and residents throughout Missouri. With his strong relationships with politicians and administrators at the city, county, state and federal levels, he has become a respected educator and voice for cannabis issues.

16

September 2019

I must commend organizations and their leadership teams, such as the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) led by Mr. Aaron Smith and his phenomenal staff of professionals that bring a level of education and awareness at every juncture of the cannabis industry. Including the NCIA’s Washington D.C. National Legislative effort. This type of training, education, and legislative efforts have rarely, if ever, been seen in any other industry. The NCIA was the first organization I joined in the cannabis industry. It was the best $5,000 investment I ever made in my life. They provided not only the education but also the inspiration and motivation, combined with 21st Century science, medical research, and facts, that I needed to approach our state and our country’s leaders to educate them with only the facts and science concerning cannabis. Another great organization is Women Grow. Even though at the time, there were not many men members, I learned from day one that women are beyond influential in the cannabis industry. They are some of the most successful business leaders in the cannabis industry. I joined them at their top level that year. I’ve learned a lot from the ladies that rule throughout different levels within our industry. MJBiz is an outstanding expo, educational, and training organization. Founded by Chris Walsh, Cassandra Farrington heads up the cannabis

industry’s leading daily news website: Marijuana Business Daily and the Worldwide MJBizCon Conferences. She is a dynamic speaker and inspirational leader. Throughout my journeys, from the battlefields of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Iran, Iraq, Israel, South America, Africa, etc. to the first day I stepped out of my car in Steamboat, CO, and walked into a World of Fields of Green, my life changed. My military life has always been filled with an astounding amount of hard-core military training, indoctrination, integrity, honor, and perseverance. Impossible was NOT in my vocabulary. I grew up in Bridgeton, MO, where I went to school, church and played on the church softball team. Most of my friends were up the road neighbors, church members, or cousins. I lived on a nice farm. My dad was a very successful business owner, even back during the Great Depression. We had lots of land, but just a few great gardens and lakes in which to fish. I was a very fortunate young man. I, unfortunately, did not realize how fortunate I was and how bad things could really get. I was about to find out. In my entire childhood, I cannot remember even a harsh verbal confrontation — never in a fight. I don’t think my mom and dad ever yelled at me. Not that I didn’t deserve it. God knows they should have beat me many times. Whoops, we can’t say stuff like that nowadays. LOL, Sorry! Well, that all changed after I decided to join the military. I was 18 and married with a precious six-month-old daughter. Of course, I wanted to accomplish everything on my own. I didn’t want to move into a great job with my dad in a commercial/home appliance business that he was willing to just hand over to me. I was an idiot. One night, I called my mom and dad to tell them that I was going to finally become a

A Vets New Mission to Serve man. They heard a noise over the phone in the background. When my mom asked me what it was, I said, “Surprise, I’m in basic training at Ft. Polk. I’m going to fly in attack helicopter gunships, and I want to wear the Green Beret. I only told my wife the day before I left for boot camp. I had to make a guaranteed paycheck every week to support them. This was the only way I felt I could do that at 18. After numerous training schools and many ups and downs, I made it to Vietnam. Life was going to change for me drastically. Upon arrival, I was picked up and transported to my first duty station. WAIT! I’m not there yet. As I loaded my gear, I was suddenly briefed on how to FIRE (pull the trigger) on a Free-Handed 7.62, M-60 machine gun. Saw one fired in Basic, I never shot one. I intently listened as he showed me everything; then he said that when we got airborne over Thoi San Island, AKA: VC Island, I could fire some rounds. WOW! Are you kidding me? I jumped into the seat next to him. I hung the weapon on a bungee cord in the door. We took off, got to VC Island, he said to fire the weapon at anything you see move. Anything that moves, pig, water buffalo, dog, cat, Viet Cong (VC) or North Vietnamese Army (NVA), it don’t matter, it’s a FREE FIRE zone (FFZ). That FFZ will haunt me for eternity. Pull the damn trigger. We were flying right above the Mekong River, maybe 30-50 ft above the river at high speed. I pulled the trigger, and for the first time, I felt the kick from that weapon, the round exploding out the barrel followed by those red tracers every 5th round. I love this — I thought. Then, it happened. First, the bullets started ripping into my aircraft. Bullets ripped through the instrument panel and plexiglass windshield, sending

shards of glass from the instruments and plexiglass windshield into my face and arms. Then first the chin bubbles blew out at my feet, then the entire front of the helicopter exploded as we crashed into the dirty stinking crap filled Mekong river. I won’t bore you with what and how things occurred next. Somehow, I held onto that heavy-ass M-60, and it still had a strip of rounds connected. Remember my friends, I had never been in a fistfight in my life. I didn’t even cuss or smoke cigarettes, ever. As I pulled myself through the river mud along the shoreline, I found a way up the embankment and got to my feet. I looked to the left and suddenly was confronted with six screaming weapon-bearing, VC soldiers wearing black pajamas running full speed at me. They indiscriminately fired their AK-47’s. Mud actually hit me in the face from their bullets hitting in front and around me. I start backing up. Nearly frozen but moving, suddenly one of their bullets strikes a branch next to me. The first soldier burst through the undergrowth. He was upon me as I tripped backward over a large piece of driftwood. As I fell backward, I squeezed the trigger on the M-60 machine gun. His head slung back as a gaping hole tore through his neck. Blood just exploded from him. Falling backward, I still pulled the trigger; the weapon released a turret of lead right toward the engaging enemy, striking their heads and bodies. My eyes went shut as I started falling back over the logs and the ledge to the river. I don’t remember much. I came to, looking up into the face of a strange man with a big grin. “That was one hell of some shooten’ boy. You got em all,” he said, laughing as he pulled off one of the blood-soaked, partially headless VC that I had shot, that had fallen over the embankment on top of me.

A lot more occurred within moments after the general spoke those words. Some things I am just not comfortable with revisiting at this time. The man that stood over me and pulled me up out of that muddy river mud, turned out to be the 1st Aviation Brigade Commander, BG Allen M. Burdette, Jr. That was just the beginning. Believe me, that moment in time was just another moment. So many combat and hellacious times occurred later in my life. It never struck me at that moment, what I had done. It was months later, as the numbers of Confirms (kills) started rising. These statistics at one time were coveted by the individuals and units that were involved. Nothing at the time proved that we were winning this war more than Confirmed Kills. As I contemplated those moments in my mind, my first day in the Nam, I got six Confirmed Kills. Sounds beyond terrifying Now! It was just the beginning of years and years of bringing death, destruction, fear, tears, and anguish to everyone I encountered in the name of WAR — I guess! From Vietnam to the Middle East. When we showed up, it was going to be a very bad day for someone. Either us or them. We were not police; we didn’t arrest people. Today, we “Render Harmless” those who have run out of chances to correct their behavior and/or their idealisms. I look back — no, I can’t look back. I don’t even want to think back or believe that I was that person or even involved in that type of work. However, I must admit, that at the time, during those years, I loved and cherished my Continued on page 36 September 2019

Patient Access Advocate ►

Wendy Callicoat & Sarcoxie Nursery by Tanya Roth, Contributing Writer

D

eep in the heart of Southwest Missouri just off Hwy 37 in Sarcoxie, MO, you will find a beautiful 72-acre farm with deep historical roots. The original Sarcoxie water tower still stands, and eye-catching old brick buildings are dotted throughout the tall maple trees. The farm was once the largest producer of peonies in the nation, and fortunately, I was invited to tour the new Sarcoxie Nursery and meet Wendy Callicoat who has big plans and even bigger visions for this historic property. The property name will be resurrected under her and her family’s guidance, only this time, it will be known for cultivating a slightly different flora — Missouri Medical Cannabis. Parked at the front gate, I gazed at the rows of trees and wildflowers taking in the natural beauty of the property. I was first greeted by Paul Callicoat who showed up in his old pick-up truck and commented on my feminist bumper sticker.

Tanya Roth is a mother and the wife of a cancer survivor. As a caregiver to a cancer patient, her journey into cannabis started with caregiving and has since evolved into patient education, advocacy, and journalism. Together with her husband, they operate Block Technology Solutions and raise their two boys in the greater KC area. 18

“You know, I never really thought feminism was that radical of a notion,” Paul joked. I immediately took a liking to him. He is an upbeat and lively man who was eager to take me for a tour of the old buildings and tell me all about the history of the farm. He walked me through the dark abandoned refrigeration rooms in the building that used to hold peonies and strawberries. He gave me the history of the water tower and boasted about keeping all the original buildings and securing their structural integrity. They plan to stay true to the property’s history as they plan for a cannabis cultivation and manufacturing facility on the site.

Our conversation then turned to his wife, Wendy. His comments took me back to what he said about my feminist bumper sticker. You could tell he has a lot of pride and respect for his wife and the major force she has been throughout the business planning of the Missouri Medical Cannabis application process. “I’m going to tell ya; my wife is in it! She’s got it. She understands it. I just assumed I would be doing all the application stuff, but she is just so good at it. I just sit there and listen,” he proudly states.

“I’m going to tell ya; my wife Wendy, is in it! She’s got it. She understands it. I just assumed I would be doing all the application stuff, but she is just so good at it.” Wendy

When Wendy arrived, we were able to talk one and one, and I understood what Paul meant. She was definitely in it, and her passion for medical cannabis was significant. She also has a lot of credit to her name. Wendy attended college for interior design and fashion merchandising, worked in sales, event planning, and was the first women to sell butcher and slaughtering equipment for the local Hantover company. She also spent time as a stay at home mom and worked alongside her husband in the

Their family name is very prominent in this region, and Wendy is highly regarded. I asked Wendy if she was ever worried advocating for cannabis legalization would tarnish their reputation; she did not skip a beat on her answer. “No. I don’t think it ever really occurred to us to ever worry about that. We felt so strongly about this plant as a medicine that we just felt we could deal with it if somebody had a problem. We could educate them and turn the tide,” she said. “When you believe in something, you just believe in it and go.”

medical cannabis dispensaries throughout the state. They plan to offer the highestquality pharmaceutical grade cannabis flower in a relaxing and comforting environment as well as contribute to cannabis research. Technology and sustainability, as well as quality, are at the forefront of Sarcoxie Nursery’s business plan. As Wendy asserts, “We are scientists and very

picky about what we put out there. We don’t want to make a product public that isn’t good. We want to produce sciencebased products.” Wendy is a powerful yet poised woman, and one to watch as a very prominent contender in the new Missouri Medical Cannabis industry.

Just a few years ago, Wendy would have never thought about cannabis as a medicine. She was raised in the “just say no” era. One day after watching a documentary about “Charlotte’s Web,” her mind began to question everything she had been taught. She started studying the scientific research and listening to patient’s stories. She watched YouTube videos and documentaries. Wendy cross-referenced and cross-examined everything and came to the same conclusion — the cannabis plant truly was a medicine that patients in need should be allowed to use. So, she became a volunteer coordinator for the western half of District 7 and deeply involved with the Amendment 2 initiative. Wendy has helped educate communities all over the region, supported signature gatherings, attended town hall meetings, and spoke with city officials. She was a major player in the legalization movement, and her name is well known, and not only in this state. When I asked Wendy what her favorite part of this adventure has been, she replied, “The cannabis community is a family, and you instantly have a bond with people. You take care of each other, and you talk to each other — and I feel very blessed to be able to be a leader in this initiative.” Wendy’s vision as a principal of Sarcoxie Nursery is working with her family to win Missouri Medical Cannabis licenses for a cultivation and manufacturing facility. She and Paul also anticipate opening at least five

“QUALIFYING PATIENT”

Hot Town “Summer in the City,” Cool Down Best Strains by Michael J. Poppa DO, MBA

W

ell, it’s about that time again, we traverse the “dog days of summer.” The sweltering summer heat reminds me of a song that reached #1 on the “Billboard Hot 100” in August 1966 for three consecutive weeks. The song “Summer in the City” was recorded by The Lovin’ Spoonful and was written by John Sebastian, Mark Sebastian, and Steve Boone. As the temperature heats up, our stress levels often elevate as well. With the “Summer in the City” song in mind, it is time to look at the best strains of marijuana to cool down anxiety disorders. However, before we explore specific cannabis strains, remember that there are two familiar strains — lndica and Sativa. lndica strains are high in CBC, the compound in marijuana beneficial for anxiety/stress. Meanwhile, Sativa strains contain high THC concentrations. Patients can often experience relief from their anxiety and stress of “Summer in the City” from THC, while others feel more anxious. Many strains can and do help relieve anxiety and stress, but here are several strains that are often recommended for anxiety: Granddaddy Purple: Granddaddy Purple is a Hybrid lndica cannabis strain that produces an incredibly relaxing effect. It also makes you feel euphoric, so it can help you manage depression if you have it. Other medical uses for Granddaddy Purple include pain, stress, and insomnia. Amnesia Haze: Unlike Granddaddy Purple, Amnesia Haze has about 20% Sativa in it, meaning you won’t feel as tired as with 100% lndica strain. However, you may want to be extra cautious when using Amnesia

20

Haze, since the THC in Sativa can make you possibly more anxious. When this strain is used by individuals who respond well to it, it boosts their mood and energy while calming them down. Chocolate Chunk: As another 100% lndica strain, Chocolate Chunk provides full-body relaxation. However, since it is very potent, you may only need a small amount to get your desired result. Girl Scout Cookies: Individuals who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) could benefit from the Girl Scout Cookies strain due to its higher THC content. While THC does exacerbate some anxiety disorders; it also replaces some of the missing chemical compounds in an individual’s brain that suffers from PTSD with memory issues. While cannabis use has numerous benefits, it can also have side effects for some individuals. As stated previously, due to cannabis’s versatility, a negative effect for one individual can serve as a benefit for another, such as lndica strains that tend to make some individuals sleepy. The bottom line is when you consider the pros and cons of cannabis, consider it from a holistic standpoint, and understand the nuances associated with each strain. Army Veteran of Harvest 360 Creates The “Athena Protocol,” Helping Those with TBI Editorial by Clayton Stallings photos by Chris Smith

A

rmy veteran Todd Scattini served 27 years in combat arms roles including Tank and Scout platoon leader and Cavalry troop commander. His language skills and passion for foreign service led to positions overseas, including U.S. Embassies in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Slovenia, but it was his assignment in 2011, as a senior advisor to the commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, that opened his eyes to both the opportunity of hemp and the healing power of medical cannabis.

Todd Scattini of Harvest 360 Through extensive research, Scattini learned that components of the cannabis plant could be used as a neuroprotectant, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This insight was one of many that led to the creation of the “Athena Protocol” — a four-phased, multi-disciplinary strategy Scattini and his team designed to mitigate and treat TBI on the battlefield. Scattini believes that this effort may also provide protection against and treatment for chronic traumatic encephalopathy CTE, a degenerative brain disease often found in NFL players.

At the time, the Afghans were using their country’s resources to grow and sell hashish on the black market to fund deadly explosives targeted at U.S. and coalition forces. Scattini was tasked with developing a strategy to redirect the Afghanistan’s natural resources into new markets. His recommendation? Hemp. Though the idea didn’t take flight, Scattini became intrigued by the potential applications of cannabis. “This is something that was fascinating on so many different levels — economy, employment, social justice, and medicine,” said Scattini. “I had to learn more.” Scattini’s efforts to understand the depth and range of medical cannabis intensified when one of his former platoon leaders succumbed to a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI’s have become so pervasive during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that officials refer to them as a signature wound. “He died because they couldn’t stop the inflammation in his brain,” says Scattini. “I think there’s a chance we could have saved him.” 22

Writer Clayton Stallings interviews Todd Scattini of Harvest 360, a Missouri medical cannabis applicant.

The “Athena Protocol” Scattini named this project after the Greek goddess, Athena — the goddess of military victory, knowledge and good counsel. Her helmet is prominently displayed on the crest of the United States Military Academy at West Point. According to Scattini, the Athena Protocol seeks to harness the neuroprotective, anti-prophylaxis and treatment through a phased program before and following a brain injury, which would include immediate administration on the battlefield following a suspected TBI, at the point of injury. Scattini says, “My hope is that The Athena Protocol might be able to prevent or reduce the severity of TBI’s, and perhaps increase the survivability of combat soldiers.”

“The military has a long history of driving medical advances, including the discovery of penicillin, the development of plastic surgery, and amputation treatment. These advances were realized in response to necessity. We’re now in a moment of necessity — we need the DoD to STEP UP, get past the stigma, and look at medical cannabis as means to address our veteran’s health crisis that we endure today. I’m confident that cannabis would become an effective tool for the military

Scattini invited me and Missouri’s Medical Cannabis industry photographer Chris Smith to a behind the scenes look at the Harvest 360’s team preparing for their Missouri Medical Cannabis applications in a house which the team rented for an entire month before the DHSS applications due date. We quickly saw that team Harvest 360 and Todd Scattini’s long-term goals far surpass the primary daunting task of winning a Missouri cannabis license. “In order to develop a deeper understanding of how cannabinoid medicine might be applied to some of the most complex medical conditions of our Joshua Alper General Manager (far right) of Harvest 30 discusses the company’s vision to provide time,” Scattini said, “we need to reduce patient access to Missouri Medical Cannabis with Stallings (far left) and Harvest 360 team barriers to research and develop clear members Ryan Strong (front left) and Vashon Ferguson (back right). protocols for cannabis uses. WORK TO WIN THE WAR

The New Movement... by Dale Sky Jones, Contributing Writer

he importance of Rosie the Riveter isn’t whether a particular real-life munitions worker inspired her image(this month’s cover inspiration), but what she inspired in others as a potent symbol for all working women. During World War II, Rosie became an icon that forever changed the labor landscape (may I joke, manscape?) of the American workforce. In a 1942 song, “Rosie” became associated with art that was initially patriotic wartime propaganda to motivate the workforce. “We Can Do It” poster by J. Howard Millar’s 1942, commissioned by the Westinghouse Company, featured a working woman flexing her arm. A year later, Norman Rockwell’s painting of a woman taking a lunch break with a rivet gun in her lap — while sitting atop a copy of Hitler’s manifesto — graced the cover of the Saturday Evening Post.

capability began to change — then the boys came home. Fast forward to now; every industry has glass ceilings and gender pay gaps. For the first time in our country, women are shaping the emerging sector. It is noteworthy that only the mature female cannabis plant holds market value as a commodity. The males are all killed off immediately unless used for breeding (no offense, boys). In 2015, Newsweek predicted that cannabis might be the first big industry not dominated by men saying, “It seems fitting that a plant called Mary Jane could smash the patriarchy.” Women led the effort to change the first laws. I became the spokeswoman for the first statewide voter initiative in 2010,

It’s what happened next, influenced by this notion that women can indeed work like men, that changed everything. Though not intended as a recruitment campaign, that is what Rosie became. According to the Encyclopedia of American Economic History, Rosie inspired a social movement that saw an increase in the number of working American women from 12 million to 20 million between the years of 1940 and 1944.

During World War II, women entered the American industrial workforce in droves, filling a variety of positions left vacant by the unprecedented war enlistment. In five years, women in the workforce increased from 27 to 37 percent. In addition to domestic factory work, more than 350,000 women joined the American armed services. The Women’s Army Corps (WAC) counted 100,000 enlisted women and 6,000 officers with full military status. The Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and WASPs (Women’s Airforce Service Pilots) became the first women to fly American military aircraft. Perceptions of traditional gender roles challenged, even fashion changed when women began to wear overalls or pants to safely run machinery on the factory floor. When women unequivocally demonstrated that we could do the same jobs as our missing men, views about ability and

pregnant during the campaign. An unusual messenger, I inadvertently became a powerful statement followed by future successful campaigns. A woman advocating on the news entirely changed the global conversation around cannabis policy reform, and how we can save our children by ending the failed Drug War. Possibly more than any previous burgeoning sector, female entrepreneurs have a shot in the business of cannabis. With thousands of positions, and policy changing rapidly, there is yet an established culture of a patriarchal boys’ club. Women have greater freedom to choose their role, and there are now vibrant networks supporting women in cannabis. However, if we are not pragmatic, informed, and proactive, women will lose the chance to define the future cannabis industry. After the war ended in 1945, women and minorities were expected to give their jobs back

Business to the soldiers returning to the workforce. Despite how crucial they were during the war effort, many women were forced out of employment and returned to duties at home. To this day, women fight to close the gaps in opportunity and pay equity.

Dale Sky Jones supporting the movement towards legalization.

Richard Lee supporting California’s Prop 19. Be aware. The shift is happening as America’s corporate culture and investors are taking an increasingly economic interest in cannabis. Wall Street is attracted to booming sales growth and declining social stigma. As male-dominated conglomerates move into the cannabis industry, they are competing with, acquiring, and pushing out businesses owned and operated by women and minorities with sheer resources.

should have more than a quarter of the executive leadership filled by women. It should be around 50 percent, reflecting consumers. What is more alarming is that the same report cites only 10 percent of executive positions in the cannabis investment firms are filled by women. Women unified to lead the charge ending alcohol prohibition in the 1930s. Women carried the weight of U.S. manufacturing during World War II. According to a study by Global Drug Policy Observatory, women between the ages of 30 and 50 swung the legalization vote in Colorado. Women represent over 50 percent of the

voting population. It was a woman who birthed you, whomever you are. Now is the time to stay vigilant, as the Drug War is not over. The women of cannabis policy reform and the men who support us have been a political and social force that defies corporate patriarchy and defines a new way of doing business. Like Rosie, the Riveter was a symbol of female agency more than 75 years ago; Mary Jane can be that symbol of female strength today. Would it be too corny to end with a cheerful “Weed Can Do It,” a twist of the 1942 “We Can Do It” poster? Yes, We Can(nabis).

At one point, unusually statistically high at 36 percent, the decline of women’s foothold in the cannabis industry has already begun. Marijuana Business Daily’s report, “Women and Minorities in the Marijuana Industry,” charts that between 2015 and 2017 the percentage of women executives in the cannabis industry fell to less than 27 percent. Better than the national average for all U.S. businesses (23 percent), it is indicative of past patterns. This decline is likely to continue unless women can seize the moment. Women will need men who support women, beyond the token female, by hiring more women into leadership roles and lending to female startups. Capital is vital to starting and growing a successful cannabis company; women and minority owners struggle to find lenders even with a better track record of success. Limiting Factors, Luxury Consumption and Optimizing Cannabis Crop Performance Editorial and Photos by Joe Bender, Contributing Writer

ike any crop, cannabis has many needs that growers have to accommodate. Watering, fertilization, light levels, carbon dioxide, and temperature, amongst many other factors, all have an impact on crop performance. When developing an overall plan for a garden, some growers might not consider that many individual factors, like each of those previously mentioned, could be the limiting factor in the performance of their crops.

As you can see, the barrel couldn’t hold more water by raising just the nitrogen (N) level, although it could hold more water by raising just the copper (Cu) level. The barrel could hold the most water (i.e., the plant could perform best) by increasing the supply of both Cu and N to optimal levels.

What is the limiting factor?

Look at all aspects of your production system when determining limiting factors. Whether it’s an input or an environmental parameter, determining what is limiting your crop is essential for improving crop performance.

The limiting factor is a factor associated with crop growth that is not being properly supplied or controlled and is thereby preventing the crop from meeting its genetic growth potential. Adding more of other inputs, or improving other environmental conditions, will not benefit the crop until the limiting factor is better addressed. For example, if the crop is grown in too cool of conditions, augmenting the carbon dioxide level will have little to no benefit. The ambient “day” temperature must be above 70°F to reap the rewards of CO2 supplementation. Another example, if a crop isn’t getting enough copper from fertilization, providing the crop with more nitrogen will not improve growth until the copper deficiency is corrected. I like to use a barrel to diagram this concept. The rungs of the barrel don’t represent relative quantities; a full-length rung represents the optimum amount of each nutrient, however little or much that might be. 28

Luxury Consumption If you’ve grown more than one strain of cannabis, you’ve probably noticed that different strains have different fertilization requirements for optimal growth and development. One strain might show signs of calcium deficiency (yellowing of the tips of the newest leaves), while another strain fertilized the same way seems to flourish. The demand for other nutrients can likewise differ from strain to strain, which can make growing multiple strains formidable. Luckily, with some trial and error, you can create a fertilization plan that satisfies the nutrient

Popular Techniques for Home and All Growers requirements of all of your strains by supplying a concentration of each essential nutrient that is well within the luxury consumption range (see graph below). Luxury consumption is when a plant is getting more of a nutrient or multiple nutrients than it needs, but not enough to cause it harm (i.e., toxicity), and thereby allowing it to reach 100% of its growth potential or yield (assuming all other needs such as light are supplied adequately). This is the area on the graph where the performance of the strains level off at 100%. Increasing nutrient concentrations or fertilization can enhance growth rates and yields until the concentration reaches the luxury consumption range, at which point greater concentrations don’t boost either metric.

Sage Bud Dude At some point, however, elevated nutrient concentrations can be toxic to a plant and may cause fertilizer “burn” or other harm, as represented by the downward curves on the graph. Of the three hypothetical strains, “A” needs the least nutrients for optimal growth and is also the most sensitive to high nutrient levels. “B” needs slightly more nutrients than “A.” “C” represents a strain that is pickier than either of the other two, with a narrower range of suitable fertilization. Even with a picky strain in the mix, you can still create a fertilizer plan that is suitable for all of your plants. The bright green line on the graph highlights the overlap within the luxury consumption range of all three strains. This overlap portrays the range of nutrient concentrations or fertilization rates that a grower should target. The graph could represent concentrations or rates of a well-balanced, complete fertilizer, or a single essential element such as nitrogen. Bear in mind that, as discussed in the previous section, any one element could be a limiting factor, so you’ll need to supply the elements in proper ratios, to develop a nutrition plan suitable for all of your plants.

Conclusions Critically examine your production protocols and your garden’s envi-

ronmental conditions to identify limiting factors that are restricting crop performance. Using well-balanced, complete fertilizers can help narrow down the list of potentially limiting factors, and experiments with only one variable, such as your N fertilizer source or level, can elucidate shortcomings. Although your strains may have various nutrient requirements, it’s possible to create a single fertilization program that will satisfy their differing needs. Adjust your nutrient levels and record the results to help identify the boundaries of the luxury consumption range in which all of your plants will thrive.

Cannabis― The Next Superfood? Discover Nutritional Basics by Carrie Hudson, Contributing Writer

P

erhaps there will come a day when we grow cannabis freely in our gardens and put it in our morning power smoothie. I found my way to the cannabis plant going through cancer a second time and finding help with nutrition and balancing my pH. I was very acidic, and by alkalizing my body and detoxing, I was able to start to gain leverage in my fight against cancer. Yet the TRUE MAGIC didn’t happen until I introduced cannabis into my daily regimen. At first, it was just about smoking and trying to forget I was dying and enjoying the moment with my kids cooking dinner, being able to eat, and perhaps drown out the toxic marriage my children and I were enduring behind closed doors. In my journey from then until now, I gained a lot of perspectives and knowledge about this plant, and indeed this plant is our future! Nutritional Basics We are what we eat! That sounds so cliché, yet it is the truth! Perhaps you’re like me, and you need to repeat those words for a minute or two and really let them sink in. The very cells in our body are generated from what we consume for nutrition. In the modern world, we live in, there is a lack of nutrition. The average American is consuming foodlike products that are full of chemicals and have no core nutrition. Each cell has a shelf life and then, it dies. In as little as a year, you can regenerate every cell in your body! Now that’s exciting! But wait! What is nutrition? According to the dictionary, it is “something that provides nourishment essential for growth and maintenance of life.” For many of you, cannabis would not be the first thing to come to mind. Leafy greens like kale and spinach, an assortment of colored vegetables, vibrant berries, nuts, and seeds are all common foods known to hold a lot of nutritional value, but marijuana? Cannabis and Essential Nutrients: Let’s break things down into two groups: Essential Nutrients and Non-Essential Nutrients.

September 2019

Essential Nutrients: ●● Carbohydrates ●● Protein ●● Fat ●● Water ●● Vitamins ●● Minerals ●● Calcium ●● Sodium ●● Potassium ●● Omega-3 Fatty Acids ●● Vitamin D Non-Essential Nutrients ●● Non-essential Amino Acids (those that can be synthesized by the body) ●● Some Vitamins (those that are made in the body) ●● Fiber ●● Cholesterol That’s a lengthy list, yes? It is kind of hard to believe one plant can support ALL that. However, the cannabis plant packs a mighty punch! It CAN get you high, but it can also DO ALL THIS! Trust me, getting high is nothing after some of the things I experienced in my 22 years of Big Pharma hell! The good news, you don’t have to get high to benefit from this plant. Here are some of the benefits of the cannabis plant. Hemp ●● ●● ●● ●●

You could chow down on a raw cannabisleaf salad, and nobody would know the difference. You won’t end up high. You still get your dose of Nutrition, just no THC!

Cannabis as a Superfood

Can You Eat Raw Cannabis Seeds?

YES! There are many benefits to snacking on shell ed, raw cannabis seeds that you may not know. Sprinkle on top of your fav orite snacks ― yo u won’t be sorry.

The next question is, how can we start incorporating cannabis into our daily regiment as a superfood? After all, I supplement my body with Vitamin D and Vitamin B, so why shouldn’t I supplement the largest working neurotransmitter in my body (the endocannabinoid system)? After all, it is sending out signals to all the other eleven working systems in our body to keep our body in balance. With so much negative attention being placed on the psychoactive aspects of cannabis, the real power behind the plant is being lost. Forget your ten different supplements. You can get everything you need from the cannabis plant! There are many ways to consume cannabis these days, both in the raw form and in its activated form, and both will offer a variety of beneficial nutrients. Next month, we’ll take a look at all the different delivery methods on the market, and how the nutritional profile of cannabis can be changed when consumed in different ways.

Cannabis as a Superfood Based on the facts about cannabis, it seems pretty hard to argue against the clear evidence that it provides many of the nutrients believed to be vital for a healthy life. Perhaps we should look at cannabis more like kale and spinach, and not see it as evil and detrimental to people. I have traveled many miles and talked to a lot of people, and it has been my experience many times over that this plant has enhanced or saved people’s lives — mine included. While it has not yet been determined the exact nutritional profile of cannabis, we have a clear picture of how nutritionally dense it is just by looking at the seeds, let alone the rest of the plant.

WOMEN & Cannabis Business

An Afternoon with Dr. Z, MD

of St. Louis, MO ... Float Therapy, Cryotherapy and Cannabis by Andrew Ellis, Contributing Writer

Dr.

Zinia Thomas, MD, (Dr. Z) is a licensed child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, she graduated from Mary Institute and went on to Boston University majoring in human physiology where her interest in “functional medicine” began (more on functional medicine later).

Natural therapies include diet and exercise and can incorporate natural substances we find in nature like plants and minerals. Understanding ourselves and others through talk therapy is a familiar form of natural healing for the mind and spirit. Many believe that Mother Nature has provided a bounty of homeopathic remedies to us as opposed to pills made in a lab. Cannabis as Medicine In 2017, Dr. Z opened Radiance Float and Wellness to practice functional medicine and offer natural therapies to her patients in addition to psychiatric consultations. She holds her certification in Cannabis Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and has been using CBD, terpenes, essential oils, and other natural healing treatments for mental health conditions. Freezing and Floating After learning more from Dr. Z about functional medicine and natural therapies, I was eager to try a couple of them out. After some discussion about my ailments, I decided to try Cryotherapy and Float Therapy.

Dr. Zinia Thomas, MD After medical school, she started her general psychiatry residency at UMDNJ Newark, NJ, and then completed her child and adolescent fellowship program at the Yale University Child Study Center. After 12 years of practicing traditional psychiatry in both corporate and private practice settings, she found that people often remained sick and that treating symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs often led to more prescriptions to combat the side effects of the original medicines prescribed to manage their disease. There had to be a better way! Functional Medicine and Natural Therapies As opposed to the acute medical care needed to treat a specific disease or traumatic injury, “functional medicine” takes a holistic approach to patient care, fostering wellness of the body and mind together as one organism. Once considered to be on the “fringe,” functional medicine is growing and being embraced by more patients and the medical community alike. 32

Cryotherapy involves rapidly cooling the body for a short time by subjecting you to some very cold air from the neck down for three minutes. The process reduces inflammation and pain, improves circulation, and causes your body to release endorphins. As I stepped into the chamber that was brimming with cold, misty, frozen air, I began to feel a kind of exhilaration building throughout my body and mind. The endorphins were starting to flow. At two minutes, I was starting to feel my “fight or flight” response beginning to kick in, and as I approached three minutes, at minus 100 degrees, let’s just say my senses were on high alert. Just as the first shiver started, my three minutes were up, and I emerged from the chamber fully energized and even a bit euphoric. Float Therapy was quite an experience in the other direction. Unlike Cryotherapy, Float Therapy deprives you of all stimuli and allows you to escape from the stressors that your body and mind encounter on a daily basis, which induces a state of deep relaxation to relieve stress and anxiety. This is accomplished by floating on top of water that has been totally saturated with Epsom Salts and kept at skin temperature, thus muting your sense of gravity and touch. With the provided disposable earplugs, your sense of hearing is nearly eliminated. Lighting is optional, but you can eliminate your sense of sight as well by floating in complete darkness. As I lowered myself into the shallow tank, I was amazed at how buoyant I was. I could completely relax my body and just float like I was in space — no gravity, no sound, and only some little LED lights arrayed on the ceiling like stars.

Still a bit giddy from going pre-hypothermic in the cryo chamber, I began to relax as the lights started to dim. Soon, I was truly alone with nothing but my thoughts to keep me company. I told myself, “Be open to good thoughts. Happy thoughts.”

Now, this is kind of deep and everybody is different, of course, but as time went along, I felt like my body, mind, and spirit were coming together into the entity that is Me. With my eyes open in the total darkness, the universe was before me, and I could still see the little points of light among a blue misty-hazed nebula. I felt like I was alone in the middle of the universe, but at the same time, comfortable in my place. I experienced a sense of harmony — and in what seemed like no time at all, my hour was up, and the lights started to come back up. After a quick shower in the tank room, I got dressed and headed home, energized yet relaxed at the same time.

As I write this article three hours later, my feeling of wellness persists. Maybe it was the endorphins and cellular level responses to the cryotherapy or maybe it was the sensory deprivation of the float or the combination of all those things — I’ll just say, you might want to put down the pills and give this a try. THE LAW

Patient Education ►

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

PLUS, YOUR OWN THREE-SENTENCE GO-TO SCRIPT!

A

by Aspen Jewel

What are the Federal Laws?

s of 2018, cannabis is federally illegal. Marijuana is treated as a controlled substance, along with heroin and cocaine. A Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) is a drug made illegal because of its high potential for abuse, safety concerns, and no known medicinal benefits. It is important to advocate for the change in classification because many states recognize cannabis for medicinal treatments, and there is plenty of research of known benefits of the plant dating back 2000 B.C. However, there is hope. The Farm Bill recently legalized the growth and use of hemp and even changed the status of CBD federally. The 420 Bill passed, meaning hemp farmers and CBD-dominant cannabis strains are completely legal across the country. CBD, which cannot get you “high,” is no longer considered a Schedule I substance. With continued advocacy efforts nationwide, we can soon see cannabis regulated similarly to alcohol. The SAFE Banking Act is another bill that recently became law. This was incredibly important for business owners to be taken seriously in the cannabis industry. Rather than keeping cash under the couch and

34

September 2019

avoiding banks, individuals can now hold accounts with banks for owning a dispensary or cannabis farm. What are the (Missouri) State Laws? Effective December 6, 2018, cannabis is medicinally legal in Missouri. However, since it is not yet possible to obtain legal cannabis with a proper license, you can still be penalized for having cannabis (even with a qualifying ailment according to Amendment 2). The first time you’re found by an authority with 10 grams, you may pay a fine less than $500 but CANNOT be arrested or incarcerated in any way for the offense. However, if you’re found to have 35 grams or more, you could face jail time for up to one year and a $5,000 fine. It is best to consume your cannabis in the safety of your home, off the roads, and away from weary on-lookers. What are my Rights if I Get Pulled Over?

Missouri has a drugged driving law that prohibits driving high in the strictest form. It is illegal for drivers to operate their motor vehicle if detectable amounts of any illicit drug are present. Do not let an officer search your vehicle without a proper warrant and probable cause. Visible paraphernalia (a pipe or vape), drug imagery (wearing a shirt with a pot leaf), and smell are all valid reasons to search the vehicle. An appropriate response to being pulled over would first be to hand the officer a proper I.D. Once an officer starts asking questions, say, “I’d rather not discuss my day.” Then ask, “Am I free to go or am I being detained?” at which point you would call a lawyer if they do not let you leave. Exercising your rights will not hurt you, and it is illegal to be arrested for marijuana possession under 10 grams.

L AW What are my Rights on my Personal Property? It is illegal to grow any type of cannabis on your property. Even if you want to grow hemp, you still need to obtain proper licenses before doing so. Consuming marijuana on your property is still illegal as Missouri residents do not have medical cards yet. It is true; any medical card from another state will work in a Missouri dispensary, but those won’t open until early 2020, so it would be assumed the cannabis traveled over state lines. Don’t open your door and politely ask the police to take the time and obtain a proper warrant. Depending on the number of offenses and amount of cannabis, you will need to contact your lawyer. What are my Rights in my Apartment/Condo? Community complexes often do not want to step between the law and their property rules. Generally, the cops will be immediately called if there is a marijuana odor, rather than the apartment “taking it into their own hands,” since the drug is still illegal. It can be dangerous to consume cannabis on a property you do not own as the landlord could remove you at any time, according to your lease. It is important to read all contracts and smoking rules before signing up to live in a complex that may inhibit your ability to medicate. How Do I Exercise My Rights?

Express your rights by calmly explaining the recent federal changes in the laws, including the recent medical legalization in Missouri. Keep the conversation short and simple. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS CAN OCCUR ANYPLACE, ANYWHERE ― TO ANYONE

job, my country, and never once questioned ever, any order that I was given. During those years, everyone had a different mindset. Not only I, but everyone looked at things and happenings differently. Each person drew different conclusions and had different perspectives about everything that went on in life and around the world. Above, I explained things to give each of you an idea of what Warriors must face on the battlefield. It does not have to be on the battlefield. It can be at any workstation or any place on earth, if the moment you are involved with traumatizes you, either now or 20 plus years later. Post-Traumatic Stress can occur anyplace, anywhere and to anyone. We all have stress. It’s how we DEAL and COPE with those moments, NOW, that will make all the difference to your lives in the future. Now, I am going to tell you what I must admit is possibly the most momentous, mindhealing, body-healing, and self-rewarding time of my life. Regardless of my age, it took me every moment of my life to become the man that I am today. Hopefully, I have changed so much, inside and out, no one would even recognize me from those days. Ha, ha! Surely, you know I am joking on that last sentence. Those remaining from the past will never forget those past years, and neither will I. Let’s lighten this up a bit and know that the best is coming next. Getting out of the battlefield and entering the Fields of Green has been beyond a lifechanging time of my life. I always thought I had a closeness and tight bond with my fellow Warriors. We did, don’t get me wrong, but not the human closeness, tight personal bonds and friendships that flood my life now. In the beginning, a completely well-managed and regulated industry that now has grown, expanded, and developed into the industry that we are all a part of developing together. Next month, you will learn from the beginning how my daughter and I first ventured into Steamboat, CO, after losing her brother and my only son, Thomas — looking to try to reason how we could have lost Angel, Thomas, their mother, and my mom and dad in just a few years. Plus, we wanted to see some snow, LOL! We are from Missouri. That time in my life became the beginning of my seven years of personal research to validate the validity of medical cannabis.

so different. Life for everyone who knew me would have been so much better. Plus, my son, daughter, and their mother would surely be alive today. Back in those years, I just was against marijuana. That was that. It was against the law. I was prouder of being in the military than anything else in the world. I always worked on the right side of the law, but if you’re lucky or have good fortune, life and the universe have a way of changing your perspective. Today my friends, set your personal feelings and engrained decades-old teachings to the side and allow yourselves to be educated in the 21st Century science, medical research, and findings concerning cannabis.

Is medical cannabis real? Does it cure or heal? Does it help you cope with life, physically or psychologically? Can it help you become a better person? Is cannabis better for you than pharmaceuticals to help you deal with some of life’s challenges?

I did precisely that. Next month, you will join my journey to find out about this plant — cannabis or marijuana — whatever you want to call it. How and what I discovered, plus meet some of the most beautiful and loving individuals on this earth who are in the cannabis industry. I owe my life to them, and they certainly know who they are.

I was faced with a daunting task. I had to find out the truth. My personal ignorance in the past, lack of education, no experience, and reluctance to listen and accept true 21st Century science and medical evidence, possibly cost my family their lives. How can that be true? I blame myself for not being the man that I am now, back 40 years ago or even 10 years ago. I was such a fool and just had no emotions or feelings. I could have been
