Inching Closer to Opening Dispensaries
e are inching ever closer to the opening of Missouri Medical Marijuana dispensaries. While there are no definitive opening dates announced yet, we suspect you may start seeing spotty grand opening news near the end of this month through the end of October. If your dispensary has a planned opening date, please contact us. Why are dispensary opening dates so vague at this point? The Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) issued 60 licenses for medical marijuana cultivation facilities. As of August 14, there were 19 facilities requesting a commencement inspection with three (3) cultivators operating (growing) and a fourth (4) planned inspection was completed on August 20. The DHSS issued licenses to 192 dispensaries, 86 infused manufacturing facilities, and 10 testing facilities. There were one or two cultivators approved to begin growing near the end of July. Obviously, plants take time to grow, and once harvested, the plants must be tested at one of 10 approved testing facilities, after testing, the product goes to either an infused manufacturer or a dispensary. So, 192 dispensaries are waiting for product from basically three cultivators. At best, you could see perhaps three to six dispensaries open state-wide between now and the end of October. On the upside, expect almost all the dispensaries to open by May 2021. Like everything this year, COVID-19 has delayed just about everyone in our newly emerging industry. Those taking up home-growing are far ahead of commercial operations, with many now harvesting crop after crop — something to consider if you need product now. Check out page 38, where you can learn more about how to grow at home. Patient certifications continue to grow as much as the anticipation of dispensaries opening. As of August 10, the DHSS reported the approval of 59,070 patients and caregivers. If you are approaching your one-year Medical ID card renewal date, please read page 42 about, “A Patient ID Card Renewal Survival Guide.” The article provides everything you need to know about the renewal process. Looking for a job within the cannabis industry? Now is a good time to start a serious job search. As of the same date, the DHSS approved 162 Agent IDs for those applying to work at licensed facilities. Lastly, we want to remind all new business license winners to contact us regarding your opening date, the free business listing within this magazine and the possibility of profiling your business to let our readers know what you offer. Please email your business name and contact information Bill.C@TheEvolutionMag.com. Don’t delay; your business could make the next issue — time is of the essence.

F
eminized cannabis seeds have, in recent years, become hugely popular among home and commercial growers alike, and for good reason. An all-female crop appeals to cultivators seeking to maximize bud production because they know in advance that they won’t need to waste space in their canopy on male plants that will only be discarded. The assurance of female plants is especially significant to medical patientcultivators whose home state regulates total plant count. The demand for feminized seeds has also generated a host of myths about the merits — or lack thereof — of the same. Let’s consider and debunk some of the common myths floating around the blogosphere about feminized cannabis seeds.
Myth #1: All Autoflowering Seeds Produce Female Plants. New patient-cultivators often experience some confusion when it comes to the terminology used to designate different cannabis varietals, and understandably so, wading through the plethora of information and misinformation available in online forums and articles is overwhelming at best. Fortunately, this particular misconception about cannabis seeds is easy to address because it stems from a conflation of terminology. Autoflowering cannabis plants are so-termed because their time-to-flower is determined at the genetic level, and not cued by changes in the light cycle, as are photoperiod plants.* Seeds for autoflowering cannabis can be designated either “regular” or “feminized.”
photo by Janfries ● Regular autoflowering seeds will produce both male (XY) and female (XX) plants, while feminized seeds are genetically female (XX). ● Cultivators who prefer to grow autoflowering varietals can choose to purchase either regular or feminized seeds depending on their needs.
Myth #2: Feminized Seeds Will Thrive No Matter Your Growing Environment. This opinion couldn’t be further from the truth. Growing conditions always affect your cannabis seeds and plants, whether regular or feminized, photoperiod or autoflowering varietals. As in any growing scenario, an improper growing environment characterized by conditions such as, but not limited to, excess heat, insufficient water or nutrients, pH and/or mineral imbalances in the soil, or lights not adjusted to the correct PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) range, can all cause issues, ranging from failure to thrive to presentation of intersex traits, so-called “Herming.” A rule of thumb is that anything that stresses a plant grown from regular seeds can also stress a feminized seed and plant.
Myth #3: Feminized Seeds Are More Likely to Present with Intersex Traits. As previously noted, plants grown from feminized seeds are susceptible to stress like all other plants and must thus be grown with care. Whether a feminized seed is likely to yield
plants with a tendency to become hermaphroditic largely depends on the process used to create the seeds themselves. A brief overview of the cannabis plant’s reproductive mechanisms is helpful here. As a dioecious species (a species whose plants produce either female or male blossoms, but not both), cannabis is a somewhat unusual member of the plant world. Unlike tomatoes, for example, a self-pollinating monoecious plant whose “complete” flowers contain both male and female reproductive parts, cannabis plants are genetically either male or female and present with either male staminate flowers or female pistillate/ovule-producing flowers. Historically, cannabis developed as a wind-pollinated plant. However, in controlled growing environments today, cultivators will cross-pollinate female plants with pollen from a carefully selected male plant to develop new varietals.
Once a month, we are part of the...
Feminized cannabis seeds are generated via two different methods. Feral cannabis plants can produce feminized seeds through rhodelization — a natural process whereby female plants subjected to stressful conditions or that remain unpollinated toward the end of their bloom phase develop pollen sacs and self-pollinate, ensuring reproduction and the survival of the plant. Although the process is natural, it is also an emergency measure that selects for plants with a tendency to present intersex traits. Thus, a female plant can produce both male and female flowers when placed in a stressful growing environment. Rhodelization is not a recommended method for feminizing seeds because the process creates seeds that are more likely to produce plants with a tendency toward intersex presentation. Evol-Mag 08/20
Professional breeders wishing to produce a stock of feminized seeds “reverse” their female plants with a silver thiosulfate solution or gibberellic acid (Ga3) treatment. The technique employs repeated chemical applications to induce female plants to develop pollen sacs. The resulting pollen is female, ensuring that the seeds derived from pollination with other female plants are also female. Unlike rhodelization, the chemical reversal process does not necessarily cue epigenetic markers that would pass intersex traits to the resulting progeny (offspring). As previously noted, feminized seeds are not immune to stress; as with plants grown from regular seeds, an inadequate growing environment can compromise a plant grown from a feminized seed. While anecdotes and “bro science” abound on this issue, no existing peer-reviewed studies suggest that feminized seeds, generated through the chemical induction method, produce plants with a greater tendency to present with intersex traits than those grown from regular seeds — provided that the parental lineage has been properly selected to “breed true” for the dioecious trait. Please stay tuned for Next Month’s Part 2 of Our Debunking Common Myths Series! *For more information about autoflowering cannabis and how it may fit into your medical garden, see our two-part series on autoflowering varietals in The EVOLUTION Magazine’s March and April 2020 issues found at www.TheEvolutionMag.com. Mayor Lucas Issues First Marijuana Pardon Mayor’s News, by Morgan Said, August 10.
K
ansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has issued the first pardon under his Mayoral Marijuana Pardon Program to Mr. Dwayne Wright of Overland Park, KS. Mayor Lucas announced the creation of this program for non-violent, low-level municipal marijuana and paraphernalia offenses during his State of the City Address earlier this year.
four times more likely than white Americans to be arrested for marijuana possession despite roughly equal usage rates, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. The Marijuana Pardon Program is one of many steps Mayor Lucas has taken to decriminalize marijuana. Last month, the City Council passed his ordinance to remove possession or control of marijuana as a violation of the City Code of Ordinances. Anyone with a municipal marijuana or paraphernalia conviction in Kansas City interested in this program can apply for a pardon at www.kcmo.gov/mayoralpardon.
DHSS Issues Four New Medical Marijuana Facility Licenses
Mayor Lucas announced this pardon when he and Mr. Wright sat down for an exclusive interview with KSHB-TV. “A lot of people, like Mr. Wright, who get caught up in the system, spend the rest of their lives trying to climb out,” said Mayor Lucas. “Our Marijuana Pardon Program is one important step in our work to build a more equitable community and help ensure the past doesn’t follow people into their future. Dwayne Wright is a good man working hard to make his family’s life better, and I’m proud to clear one obstacle on his journey forward.” “Mr. Wright lives in Overland Park, but received a municipal marijuana conviction in Kansas City,” continued Mayor Lucas. “Now — no matter what job or housing he applies for, in or outside of Kansas City — he knows this conviction has been pardoned. This serves as an important reminder that inequities do not stop at city, county, or state lines, and we all have a role to play in creating a more equitable region. I hope mayors in our metro and country will build on this program in their communities.” Public opinion and laws surrounding marijuana usage have changed dramatically in recent years: in 2017, Kansas City voters decided by a 75/25 percent margin to decriminalize possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, imposing instead a $25 fine; and in 2018, Missourians voted to amend the State Constitution to permit the use of medical marijuana and its regulated growth. Still, Black Americans are nearly 12
September 2020
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) announced on August 10, that four new medical marijuana infused product manufacturing facility licenses were issued today to the entities next in line on the conditionally denied applicant list. During the compliance review process for all new medical marijuana facility licenses, the DHSS has determined that certain infused product manufacturing facilities submitted duplicative applications for licensure and therefore received multiple licenses for a single proposed facility. Facility applicants were not prohibited from submitting duplicative applications; however, one facility can only utilize one license. Therefore, DHSS has merged the redundant licenses for each of these facilities and issued four new licenses to the entities next in line on the conditionally denied applicant list. Merging redundant licenses will not impact these facilities’ ability to implement what they proposed in their applications, and issuing these new licenses will ensure the minimum number of licenses required by Article XIV are actually in use. The four new licensees are: 1. Beta Fusion Extracts LLC at Parcel #12-04-401-023, Springfield, MO 65803 2. Como Health LLC at 1716 Lindberg Dr, Columbia, MO 65201 3. Holistic Missouri LLC at 19 Highway 5, Sunrise Beach, MO 65079 4. Holistic Missouri LLC at 14514 S US 71 Hwy, Kansas City, MO 64147 For complete details and to monitor the continued progress of minimum standards reviews and commencement inspections, visit the DHSS Facility Licensing and Compliance data and reports webpage at https://health.mo.gov and see MO medical marijuana page.

Q&A?
Just ask Leah...
What Is The Best Way to Store Your Cannabis? by Leah Maurer, Contributing Writer
C
Ask Leah
annabis can be kept and enjoyed for quite a while as long as it is stored properly. In fact, a study published years ago in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (JPP) on the stability of cannabis and its preparations on storage concluded that carefully prepared cannabis flower or extracts are reasonably stable for one to two years if stored in the dark at room temperature. While the study is a bit dated, it is still applicable today when it comes to considerations for how to store your cannabis.
Leah Maurer, a native Missourian, is now a canna-journalist and activist living in Portland, OR. She is a co-owner of www.TheWeedBlog.com; a top national cannabis news and information publication, where she serves as the Editorial Lead. In 2014, Leah founded Moms for YES on Measure 91 through grassroots efforts alone, it proved pivotal in the passage of the Measure, successfully legalizing recreational/adult-use cannabis in the OR. Leah is a social justice and cannabis activist at the core and hopes to see an end to the prohibition of cannabis globally. 16
September 2020
If you are purchasing your cannabis from a dispensary, it will be packaged and ready for these storage conditions. It is important to differentiate between short- and long-term storage. While it is generally recommended that you do not store your cannabis in plastic, you will notice that dispensary packaging is almost entirely plastic, as it is made for shortterm use. However, if you are a home grower or caregiver, you will need to consider a little more information about storing your harvested cannabis for long-term use. Proper curing is the first step for long-term cannabis storage, which I covered in last month’s column. But, once your cannabis flower is cured, here are some factors to consider about storing it:
Temperature Mildew and other organic matter thrive in temperatures between 77° and 86° F, so basic precautions of keeping your cannabis in a cool, dark place will go a long way. Excessive heat can dry out the cannabinoids and terpenes. Lower temperatures will slow the
process of decarboxylation of cannabinoids. Additionally, warm air holds more moisture than cold air. The JPP study found that the effect of temperature on cannabis storage, up to 20°, was insignificant, but air oxidation led to significant losses.
Humidity
Cannabis humidors are available with two to nine strain capacity boxes.
Humidity control is paramount to keeping mildew and other mold contaminants away from your cannabis. Keeping your cannabis stored in a controlled environment with the proper relative humidity ranges can be a bit of a balancing act. The general consensus is to keep cannabis between 59% and 63% relative humidity when stored to maintain and enhance color, consistency, aroma, and flavor. Keeping your relative humidity below 65% reduces the chances for mold to occur. However, if it drops too low, you risk your trichomes becoming brittle and drying out the essential oils.
Light Harmful UV rays break down many organic and synthetic materials. Like the way your grass turns brown at the end of a long sunny summer, UV rays will degrade your cannabis over time. Probably the biggest takeaway from the JPP study is that exposure to light was shown to be the greatest single factor in the loss of cannabinoids, especially in solutions. Also, loss of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) after exposure to light does not lead to an increase in Cannabinol (CBD), but air oxidation in the dark does.
Air Dontrol While cannabis needs oxygen during growing and curing, storing your cannabis in a container such as a Mason jar with the right amount of air is crucial to keeping it fresh. Having too little air can greatly affect the relative humidity, especially if the buds are not completely dried and cured before storage. On the other hand, too much air will speed up the degradation process as the cannabinoids and other organic matter are exposed to oxygen. There are many storage containers for cannabis on the market, from customized artistic jars to cannabis humidors. However, the most practical place to store your cannabis is a dark, glass, air-tight container. Choose a glass jar that is the size that allows you to fully stuff the glass with your intact buds, leaving little air for them to dry out. You need a glass jar that seals completely, leaving no air or fumes capable of leaking out. Once the jar is closed and wiped clean, after a few days, the smell and odor should subside considerably. If you use a regular glass jar with no covering, make sure to place it in a (cool) dry place for storage.
H360 Labs is Committed to Safety of The Patients and Success of The Operators in Missouri Compliant + Accurate + Fast + Affordable
It is not a good practice to store your cannabis long-term in plastic. Plastic will expose it to degradation by light, air, and temperature fluctuations. A cabinet or drawer are good choices as you want to be sure to choose a place that does not experience a lot of temperature changes that could affect the freshness of the cannabis. Whether you are storing cannabis that you have purchased from a medical marijuana dispensary or storing cannabis flower from your home grow, the good news is that there are many options. As long as you do so properly, the freshness of your cannabis can last for quite a while. Have a cannabis education related question for Leah? Patient Access Advocate ►
Cracking the Iceberg Decriminalize marijuana within Kansas City, MO. by Dolores Halbin,, Contributing Writer
I
can’t express the joy I felt and the sense of “battle won” that washed over me as I listened to the historic Live Feed interview last month with Mayor Quinton Lucas hosted by Clayton Stallings of The EVOLUTION Magazine. The signing of the initiative to decriminalize marijuana within the city limits of Kansas City, MO, took my breath away or allowed me to take a deep breath. The Mayor requesting Clayton and The EVOLUTION Magazine to host speaks highly to the talents and passion of this young man and the magazine. There was a definite crack in the granite of prohibition that day.
As seen in August 2020 issue What seems like a lifetime ago, back in 2016, I had the privilege of speaking on a panel at the Patient’s Out of Time conference in Baltimore, MD. Mary Lynn Mathre, RN Ret US Army, founded the stellar cannabis education not-for-profit, 25 years ago. The 25th anniversary conference was scheduled for last April in DC with a planned walk on Washington by healthcare providers for cannabis medicine. Sadly, because of COVID, the conference did not happen. In 2016, Mary Lynn asked me to be on a “Victim’s Panel,” along with Missouri’s own former cannabis inmate and now cannabis advocate, Jeff Mizansky. (I requested they change the name to the “Survivors Panel.” I don’t do victim.) Mizansky and I had been public speaking together on a couple of occasions with Show-Me-Cannabis and NORML. We had just begun working together on a statewide campaign putting on Town Hall Meetings and gathering signatures for the doomed 2016 medical marijuana ballot initiative. 18
September 2020
Mizansky had been in prison for 22 years when Missourians ultimately got him out. We gathered in Jefferson City in 2015 and turned in 200,000 signatures to Governor Jay Nixon requesting a sentence commutation. Mizansky received a life sentence without the possibility of parole “for a plant.” Upon his release, he and son Chris, who started the campaign to free his dad, joined the army fighting the unjust laws. When they seated us on the stage, they put me in the last seat. They wanted to end the panel with my story. It did not occur to me until Mizansky began to speak that this was a mistake. I still had a kid in plant prison, and Mizansky's stories of prison life took my air away. After my presentation, my dear friend and fellow cannabis widow and activist Alice Randall Leary asked me if that was the first time I ever spoke in public. She told me I just quit in the middle. Alice is the widow of Robert Randell. Alice and Robert are the couple who took on the Supreme Court in 1976 after Robert was busted for a few plants on his patio in Washington, DC. Robert, like my husband Gene Halbin, had glaucoma. The couple made their case so well, the Supreme Court not only made cannabis legal for patients with glaucoma but called up their government research cannabis farm in Mississippi and instructed it to send 300 pre-rolled joints a month to all glaucoma patients. Pre-rolled because people with vision problems might not see well enough to roll their own, which was thoughtful. There are still two living patients who continue to receive that Mississippi cannabis every month from the Federal Government — the same Federal Government that 45 years later, still says cannabis has no medicinal value. It was during this shortened presentation that I looked out at the sea of people all gathered for a singular purpose and vision. I was in an auditorium with healthcare professionals who traveled from around the world to study the cannabis plant and all its medicinal wonders. My family roots are coal miners, and my great granddad’s pickaxe is one of my greatest treasures. I looked out on this international sea of people, folks who had traveled from far and wide, all gathered doing the same thing Henry Ford and George Schlictin, inventor of the hemp decorticator, had been doing since 1937, the beginning of the Cannabis Wars — working to repeal cannabis prohibition and let science out of jail.
I suddenly saw us all as miners. We were on a giant rock that is moving to destroy us. Each one of us hits the rock with whatever tools we have, pickaxes, spades, drills all hammered in symphony — all working on different parts of the giant rock in the hopes of creating a small crack, none, less important than the next. I shared my vision with those folks — the image of the pickaxe and all of us working together in group mind to remove the threat. I begged them not to stop until we had cannabis off the DEA Federal schedule of narcotics (as it is not a narcotic) and all the cannabis prisoners out of jail. The pickaxe became the theme of the conference. Which leads me back to our current day ax wielder Clayton Stallings, who, in concert with Mayor Lucas, hit prohibition in Kansas City with a laser beam. Finally, during all the dialogue surrounding recent racial inequities — power was speaking truth to power. Mayor Lucas came out publicly in opposition to arrests for small amounts of cannabis, which is tricky business for any Mayor. Lucas spoke his truth about police objections to the decriminalization initiative because it “took away their justification to search.” They can no longer intimidate patients with those three little words, “I smell marijuana” — it’s past about time. I remember Gene and I following the Randell case back in 1976. We all believed it would be the gateway for “Federal Reform.” After all, how can you, on the one hand, grow marijuana and send it to hundreds of patients, while on the other hand, maintain it as a Federal level Class One Schedule One drug of no medicinal value? This question has persisted for too many decades. With the federal government struggling to keep cannabis a Schedule One Drug, the challenge for states to continue to step up and stop the insanity is critical. Sometimes, as in Missouri’s case, we are forced to employ institutional reform city-by-city as we struggle for nationally reformed policies and laws based in truth. This is an election year. I am never comfortable with saying, “It has never been more important to vote!” What is crucial to the outcome of elections are educated voters. We must educate ourselves on who is running in the real power positions of Mayors, Governors, Judges, Sheriffs, and Prosecuting Attorneys. Our goal is to change our current leaders’ hearts and minds scientifically about cannabis. If we can’t reason with them, then we must vote current leaders in opposition out of office this November. Write, tweet, email, send smoke signals, call those in power, and make your voices heard. Clayton and Mayor Lucas “Cracked the Ice” with some precision hammering, not like a pickaxe —like a laser. They give me hope in their leadership. We cannot quit; we cannot let up on the pressure; we must keep swinging while we have momentum. It is time.

To Heal After Covid-19,
The Kansas Economy Needs Medical Cannabis Kansas
Sublett, by Lisa Ash s sa Advocates
Bleeding Kan
K
ansas needed new revenue and jobs before the pandemic. Now, in our new Covid-19 world, the need is nothing short of desperate. The current economic hurt is being felt around the world, but countries and states with a legal cannabis market are learning important lessons about how this market sector will help them through the crisis.
What Can Kansas Lawmakers Learn?
After growth skyrocketed between 2018 and 2019, participants in the 2020 “State of the Cannabis Cultivation Industry Report” hit a plateau in their revenue trajectory. The average reported revenue inched up from $3.73 million in 2019 to $3.74 million in 2020, per Cannabis Business Times. With 63% reporting that Covid-19 impacted their businesses, resulting in decreased sales and staff cuts for some, and a jump in sales for others. Even a small growth percentage is encouraging news that cannabis is recession-resistant.
Per MJBizDaily.com, medical and recreational cannabis sales in the United States are on track to exceed $15 billion this year, a jump of 40% over 2019, according to the new Marijuana Business Factbook. Moreover, total U.S. sales could reach as high as $37 billion by 2024.
A Federal Reserve Bank district recently published a short analysis outlining the potential benefits and consequences of state-level cannabis legalization, noting the economic impact of the policy change. The analysis report was recently featured in a Marijuana Moment article.
Cannabis businesses were deemed essential in every legal state. They were not only allowed to remain open, but in many states, new avenues of access were approved to allow the market to continue to serve customers, including online ordering, drive-through windows, curbside pick-up, and expanded delivery options. While cannabis businesses were excluded in the initial round of Covid-19 assistance money, that changed by later rounds. Roughly, a half-dozen companies with ties to the cannabis industry received $3.5 million to $8.7 million from the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program designed to help small businesses keep workers employed during the COVID19 pandemic. Also, long-awaited federal banking reform that allows cannabis businesses to bank like any other business finally passed, allowing benefits like secured banking and needed credit.
Setting tax rates too high could reduce demand for legal marijuana products and send consumers to the unregulated market. Setting them too low could offset revenue to states, Charles S. Gascon, a regional economist and senior coordinator for the Fed, wrote. Last year, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City analyzed Colorado’s cannabis market and ultimately determined that the cannabis industry is primed to continue to grow as public support for legalization increases, although perhaps not quite at the rate seen in the early years of the policy change’s implementation.
Leafly’s annual Cannabis Jobs Report found 243,700 full-timeequivalent (FTE) jobs supported by legal cannabis as of January 2020. Even in a down year, the cannabis industry added 33,700 jobs. That’s a 15% year-over-year increase. Over the past 12 months, the expanding industry has created 33,700 new jobs nationwide, making legal cannabis the fastest-growing industry in America. 20

In a recent MJBizDaily.com article entitled, “Marijuana MSO execs pinpoint state markets they’re least bullish on — and those they’re eyeing for the future,” Kansas was seen as a state closed for business. This perception that Kansas will remain closed to the fastest growing industry and the largest job generator in the nation is a sad consequence of recent inaction. Meanwhile, our neighbors are doing great. Another article on MJBizDaily.com by Eli McVey showed that business can boom even during a pandemic when technology helps foster continued patient access.
Kansas Patient Access “In April, sales in Oklahoma shot up to $61.5 million, a 21% increase from March. Sales rose again in May to reach nearly $74 million — a monthly figure that far exceeds that of adult-use markets in Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan and Nevada. With more than $275 million in MMJ sales in 2020 to date, Oklahoma’s market could easily eclipse $700 million by the end of the year — in the same ballpark as more populous states such as Arizona and Florida. “Patients continued to enroll in Oklahoma’s medical cannabis program throughout the COVID-19 crisis — rising from roughly 272,000 in March to 297,000 by the end of May; though the recent monthly sales gains were driven by additional spending from existing patients. …. “Oklahoma declared medical cannabis businesses as essential during the current pandemic, allowing dispensaries to provide curbside-pickup services to patients. Generally speaking, when retailers and dispensaries allow customers and patients to order online or call ahead before coming to the store to pick up products, average order sizes increase.” In a recent interview on CNN, cannabis industry executive Jessica Billingsley, CEO of Akerna, which makes regulatory compliance software that helps states track cannabis sales from seed to sale, said, “At the end of the day, economics talk and jobs talk. I truly believe we're going to see some very meaningful and important movement coming out of this as states and governors look for a way to bolster their economy.” A dozen states have proposed various cannabis initiatives, 10 of which are looking to legalize medical use cannabis, adult-use cannabis, or both at the same time. Kansas truly can no longer afford to ignore the healing power of cannabis. #FreeToHeal is a cry for Kansas reform that now applies to our poor economy as much as our in-need patients. Ask a Nurse ►
How Can We Help Grandma? Can CBD or THC Help?
CANNABIS THERAPY
by April Hatch RN, Contributing Writer
M
any families find themselves taking care of their parents as they reach their “Golden” years and asking these questions. Who can take grandma (or grandpa) to her doctor’s appointment? Who is picking up her meds? Grandma doesn’t like the new pills the doctor gave her. Isn’t there something better with fewer side effects for her? It’s these kinds of questions and statements family members exchange with each other through text messages, phone calls, and family meetings, desperately trying to help an elderly loved one.
April Hatch is a Registered Nurse and the co-founder of Cannabis Care Team where she provides education, support, and advocacy for cannabis patients. She learned the benefits of cannabis when she witnessed how miraculously it worked for her own child. April understands how overwhelming starting cannabis treatment can be and can proudly say her patients have the confidence they need to make informed healthcare decisions. But it’s not only these conversations that call us into action. It’s the calls from Grandma that you make sure you never miss. Maybe she’s calling just to discuss a recent project she’s working on or say she’s sending you a package, but more often, the calls are because there is a problem. Grandma hurts, not just physically, but all over. Her heart is aching for a loved one she has lost, her independence, and her youth. She’s isolated, and perhaps lost the ability to do activities she once enjoyed — her pain has taken away her sense of purpose. She’s suffering, and everyone wants it to stop. How can we help her? I have a real soft spot for seniors. Like most, I had grandparents, but I had some very special grandparents who taught me how to grow, cook, sew, and love. Starting in their 80s, I had the opportunity to give back to them as I provided them with care. I was there to make sure they understood their medications,
explain test results, take them to the doctor, but also to hold their hands a little longer knowing our time together would come to an end soon. Both of those grandparents have passed, but I continue to care for many other aging minds and bodies. Being who I am, I want to take away that cancer pain, those Parkinson’s tremors, and that isolation that often comes with seniors who are no longer physically able to get out.
Can Cannabis Help?
tter ma a be d n a r G Give f-life and quality-o ell-being... fw sense o
There is study after study that says cannabis can help with pain, anxiety, insomnia, symptoms of cancer and cancer treatment, and the list goes on. Cannabis is a miraculous plant, but in all honesty, just like pharmaceuticals, it can’t cure everything, but maybe it could at least help take the edge off? Would Grandma just smile a bit more, laugh, get a good night’s sleep, enjoy sewing, and gardening again?

Even with the studies that cannot defiantly prove cannabis can improve physical symptoms, at the very minimum, they conclude cannabis can give us a better quality-of-life. Quality-of-life is that general sense of well-being; it’s feeling content and satisfied, and it’s a feeling we all want for Grandma. Knowing it may help our elderly loved ones find some peace, how do we introduce it to them? I can tell you that simply giving Grandma some edibles with the instructions, “start with half” or “here, try this CBD,” is not the right way to introduce cannabis to anyone, senior or not. She needs to understand the risks, dosing, titration, and how to manage side effects. Because if it doesn’t work or worst, gets her “high,” she likely won’t be open to trying it again. If you are looking to help a loved one, here are some best practices to consider when it comes to seniors and cannabis. 1. Seniors are more likely to have cognitive, metabolic, and cardiac conditions that put them at higher risk for the side effects of cannabis. First, make sure your loved one is a good candidate for cannabis, as cannabis is not recommended for everyone. 2. Remember that our seniors have spent countless hours in clinics and many trips to the pharmacy resulting in leaving with a bottle of pills, a label, and directions. They are accustomed to receiving medical care from medical professionals, and they need the same discussion about cannabis to feel comfortable. They need reading material, clearly written instructions, labeled products, and their concerns addressed. 3. Understand that many senior patients don’t want to feel the psychoactive effects of cannabis, and it can take some effort to find the right dose that provides symptom relief without negative side effects. This may best be accomplished by waking up their endocannabinoid system with CBD first. When it’s time for THC, start low and go slow. It’s not uncommon for practitioners to start senior patients with low 1-2mg of THC per dose that is slowly titrated up every three days to reach a good therapeutic dose. Set reasonable expectations, if Grandma has debilitating pain, it may take a while before she sees good results. 4. Explain the entourage effect of how THC and CBD work best together.* Many seniors or their friends have tried CBD, and time and time again, I hear, “It didn’t work.” Make sure they know that CBD isn’t something everyone “feels” quickly — it’s the consistent use of a therapeutic dose that may provide medical benefits. For some, it’s 10mg of CBD three times a day; for others, it’s much higher. It depends on the person. 5. Lastly, don’t forget, many of our seniors are on a budget, and cannabinoids can be expensive and aren’t covered by Medicare. Have a plan for how you can help Grandma with the cost if that’s a concern and what she needs. I wasn’t able to help my grandparents with cannabis, but fortunately, I have been able to help others. I hope it’s the same for you. Be openminded and start slow.

he 2020 Missouri NORML Conference will take place at the University of Missouri’s Cornell Hall Auditorium on October 10. The keynote speaker at the event will be attorney Keith Stroup, the founder of NORML and the entire marijuana reform movement. Mr. Stroup founded the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in 1970, modeling it on other consumer interest groups, for the purpose of representing the interests of cannabis consumers as well as repealing the criminal prohibition of responsible marijuana use by adults. In the 1970s, 11 states decriminalized the personal use and possession of small amounts of marijuana. In 1996, California became the first state to effectively legalize the medical use of marijuana by patients. In 2012, both Washington State and Colorado became the first states to legalize non-medical adult-use of cannabis. The Conference will be live-streamed on Saturday, October 10, at www.facebook.com/MissouriNORML. Depending on the status of the coronavirus, the entire event may take place online. NORML, founded in 1970, celebrates its 50th anniversary. NORML has been the leading national marijuana law reform group for the last half-century. NORML continues to lead the fight for the repeal of federal marijuana prohibition and works through its national network of state Affiliates and local Chapters to bring about marijuana law reform in state and local government as well. Other confirmed speakers at the October 10th event include Erica Ziegler, DHSS Missouri Marijuana Patient Services Director. Ms. Zeigler will discuss the present status of the implementation of Article 14 of the Missouri Constitution, Missouri’s medical marijuana law, and the rules and regulations promulgated by DHSS pursuant to Article 14. Other tentatively scheduled speakers include Representative Kip Kendrick, Representative Shamed Dogan, and Senator Caleb Rowden.
thousand caregivers are likewise authorized to cultivate for patients. It is anticipated that commercial medical marijuana dispensaries will begin to open across the state by October of this year. This will be the final step in the implementation of the measure passed by 66% of Missouri voters in November 2018. Missouri NORML and its chapters played a key role in placing Article 14 on the ballot and campaigning for its passage. Missouri NORML is one of the most active of all NORML’s state Affiliates. Missouri NORML began to hold state conferences as early as 1975. Missouri NORML chapter leaders are now engaged in discussions with industry representatives working on drafting another initiative to legalize adult-use and cultivation of cannabis in Missouri. NORML hopes to place that measure before Missouri voters in the November 2022 election. Join us October 10

THOUGHTS FROM DOC ►
Is Medical Cannabis an Effective Treatment for Seizures? by Michael J. Poppa DO, MBA
M
any patients suffering from epilepsy and other seizure disorders have found great relief from medical marijuana (cannabis), either taken by itself or in conjunction with more traditional medications. Others who suffer from seizures but can’t tolerate anti-seizure medications have successfully used medical cannabis to control their seizures. Medical cannabis lacks the side effects found in traditional medicines used to treat epilepsy. Cannabis side effects are typically mild and are classified as “low risk.” Recent open-label and goldstandard studies have provided concrete evidence of medical marijuana’s side effects when used with and without anti-seizure medicine. Percentage of side effects to patients in these studies included: ● Diarrhea in 17% ● Drowsiness in 21% ● Fatigue in 17% ● Decreased appetite in 16%. It is important to note that medical cannabis and the patient’s current anti-seizure medicine can interact, thereby causing specific side effects. Participants in the study also described medical cannabis side effects, which went away, as mild or moderate. Seizures in the study decreased by 54% for participants in the open-label study, who ranged from two to 26 years of age and did not respond previously to traditional anti-seizure medicine. Researchers also found that 89% of children participants’ seizures were reduced using medical cannabis. In the two additional studies, seizures dropped by more than 40%, while patients who received the placebo reported a seizure decrease of less than 20%. The overall response from the study was that seven
26

out of every eight participants improved with medical cannabis for their seizures. An earlier medical cannabis study for seizures, completed in Israel, found similar results. An even earlier study from 2003, by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University, found that the ingredients in cannabis and the cannabinoid receptor protein produced naturally in the body played a critical role in controlling spontaneous seizures in epilepsy. The results from these various studies are promising and provide the insight researchers, parents, and those with epilepsy are looking for when they ask if medical cannabis for seizures is a viable option.
Ways to use Medical Cannabis for Seizures Unlike other prescription drugs that often require one form of intake, there are multiple ways to approach your cannabis treatment plan. Patients who take me cannabis for seizures often find it beneficial to consume their medications in the following ways: ● Smoking ● Vaporizing ● Edibles and infused beverages ● Tinctures ● Pills and supplements Since seizures often provoke sudden symptoms, smoking and vaporizing are an ideal way to promote immediate relief. Inhaled methods allow the effects of cannabis to kick in faster, helping users manage their symptoms when a seizure occurs. The state laws for medical cannabis differ for each state, so your ability to access certain cannabis varieties or intake methods may vary.
Best Strains of Cannabis for Seizures A selection of cannabinoids, CBD included, effectively target epileptic seizures. By discovering and isolating these cannabinoids, growers can provide families and patients with cannabis strains for epilepsy. The cannabinoids that target epilepsy and seizures include: ● CBD ● Cannabinol (CBN) ● Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA) ● Tetrahydrocannbivarin (THCV) Growers across the United States offer more than 80 cannabis strains for treating seizures. One of the most well-known strains is called Charlotte’s Web. Created for Charlotte Figi, the strain was developed by Realm of Caring, a medical cannabis group, and grown by the Stanley Brothers. By using medical marijuana, Charlotte’s seizures went from 1,200 a month to 1-2 episodes. Medical studies of Charlotte’s Web demonstrate the strain’s effectiveness. A 2016 study in Colorado found 10% of patients became seizure-free while 60% reduced their epileptic episodes by 50% with Charlotte’s Web.
Other available cannabis strains that treat seizures and epilepsy include (please note: the name brands of strains will vary by the state grown and cultivators selected brand names): ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Bedford Glue Larry Bird Kush O.A.T. Grapefruit Kush Kushberry Black Bubba Athabasca GI001
Black Bubba
GI001
Strains like GI001 offer low amounts of THC, while the Bedford Glue strain contains a THC over 20%, but without debilitating effects. Athabasca also contains enough THC to create a mild psychoactive effect that has helped some patients with epilepsy. One of the challenges in using cannabis for seizures is the fact that a disease like epilepsy is not a one-size-fits-all disorder. It features three categories of seizures, which are then subdivided into additional types of seizures. Treating seizures, even with prescription medicine, requires trying different prescriptions and dosages.

Drying and Curing are as Important as the Grow Itself A great finished product all starts with flush.

smooth herb that burns clean white ash and tastes like it smells all starts with finishing your plants properly. You don’t want to spend all that time and money growing pretty, terpene-rich plants just to harvest too early or improperly dry and cure and lose that flavor and aroma you’ve smelled all along. Flushing usually starts at week 6-7 or 1 to 2 weeks before your planned harvest. So, 10-week cultivars should start to be flushed weeks 9 and 10, the last 7-14 days. For Organic Soil Gardens and hydroponic drip feed systems using bottled nutrients, flush using the amount of water for the pot size. A 5-gallon pot needs about 5 gallons of water to flush everything out properly, check the ppm of the runoff, and continuing flushing until it’s less than 250 ppm. This will show you that most of the nutrient and mineral build-up has worked its way out of the growing medium. Continue using filtered pH’d water until harvest. In hydroponics flush with pure pH’d RO water until the runoff is less than 250 ppm. Some say you don’t need to flush organic bottled nutrients, but I’ve noticed a difference when running side by side experiments. For Rockwool or any flood tray garden, soak with pure RO water for 30-40 minutes and test the flush water’s ppm and repeat daily with fresh water until the flushed runoff water is less than 250 ppm. Continue watering with pure RO water until harvest, possibly using a product like Rock Resionator, Rhizoflora’s Terpinator, or Fox Farm’s Cha Ching until harvest day. There are a lot of products out there that are low ppm and can be used through flushing to promote terpene produc-
tion in your plants until the very end. By flushing your plants to start leaching out all the chlorophyll, you’re making the plant use all the stored nutrients within the plant. The plant should begin to fade, and the fan leaves usually turn light green, yellow, purple — fall colors in general — showing you that nutrients are all used up, and the plant is ready for harvest. Remember, there is no need to flush living soil as long as the only inputs are natural compost teas, earthworm castings, beneficial microbes, and a composting crop cover. Just pull out your stock, leaving all your root-ball to decompose, helping to add nitrogen to the bed. Closely watch the trichomes throughout the flower phase and especially close towards the end. You will notice them change along the way in shape, size, and color. The trichrome head will first be clear when it’s still small, as they grow larger, it will turn smokey and then white. As the plant gets close to harvest, the trichome heads will start to turn amber, which is a sign that the plant is maturing and close to harvest. When around 25%-50% of the trichome heads turn amber, it’s time to harvest.
Harvesting and Drying: To harvest — hold the branches by the stem, not the flower bud to avoid damaging the delicate trichomes and getting really sticky fingers. I suggest harvesting with nitrile gloves if you can. Start from the top and cut off the main cola a few nodes under where it starts branching. Cut the biggest leaves first to make it easier to remove the smaller leaves.
Let’s get Fresh branches twist fairly easily, and you can twist the stem while cutting off the fan leaves, keeping the smaller leaves and fine sugar leaves. The small leaves with trichomes will be trimmed off after drying and before we start to slowly cure the flowers.
Drying
The plants should be hung up or laid on a drying rack for around 14 days, give or take. This time allows the plant to release most of its moisture and dry enough before you do a final trim. 1. The drying room should have an RH of around 50% with a breeze blowing the air lightly. 2. You can hang the whole plant if you have room, but most people cut the branches down to 1-2 ft lengths and use hangers to dry them vertically, arranged rows in their drying room or closet. 3. It’s best to have a controlled environment to dry the plants. In a pinch, you can use something like a cardboard wardrobe box. They’re pretty dark, and you can stack them. I personally prefer those over a large plastic tote. 4. After about 14 days at that humidity level, the buds should be dry enough for their final trim. You want to test that by bending a few hanging branches, small and large, to see if they bend or snap. You want the branches to snap. If they bend and you don’t hear that snap, it’s probably not quite dry enough and may need a few more days. Check daily at this point. If anything, error on the side of too dry instead of too wet before final trim and curing starts. 5. A lot of people will get really excited and start jar-curing too quick. Flowers that get stored too wet will degrade terpenes and flavor and will have a musty hay-like smell that cannot be undone.
Trim and Curing: When it comes to trimming, nothing beats hand trimmed buds. There are many trim machines the industry uses like the GreenBroz Dry Trimmer (photo on left) and Twister Wet and Dry Trimmers that will trim cannabis extremely fast, but they cost thousands of dollars, and most home growers can’t afford those machines. There are many options for home
growers who don’t want to use scissors. The cheaper fast options are bowl trimmers, bag trimmers, brush trimmers, and automatic scissors, but all these methods will brush off a lot more trichomes than hand trimming, so most often, the finest cannabis is hand-trimmed using scissors. You want to handle the flower buds as little as possible as not to disturb the trichomes. Now that the flower is dry, the sugar trichomes can fall off a lot easier. Use a Trim tray like the “Harvest More Trim Bin” (photo on left) to help with your trimming, aides in collecting the trichomes that are inevitably going to fall off while trimming. The trim itself can then be shaken around on the tray to force more trichomes to fall off, and then the kief from the bottom tray can be collected and used. Store your freshly dried trim in the freezer ASAP, and keep it there until you make your bubble hash, rosin, butter and oils for edibles, or whatever you want. Slow Cure is the best. You want to keep the flower in airtight and light-tight containers like the CVault container brand (starter kit shown here) that comes with a humidity control pack. The amber glass mason jars can also be used, but they aren’t quite up to par with CVault
for preserving quality. If using clear jars, they should be kept in a dark closet with little to no light exposure. The flower jars need to be burped, allowing humid air to escape the jar a couple of times a day for the first week or two to make sure that the flower isn’t too wet. Keep the humidity in the container around 50-60% for 2 to 4 weeks for a fast cure and up to 3 months for a nice slow cure. I also recommend that you put a small humidity monitor in the container so you can keep a more accurate eye on the process. Being patient is key to a successful cannabis harvest, and the best way to learn is by doing, experimenting, and writing down your findings for future reference. Happy Growing!

Southeast Enterprises
Trimming Away Staffing Costs with Dependable Staff by Clayton Stallings,
A
s the Missouri Cannabis Industry operational deadlines seem to be creeping slower and slower to commencement, with only three licenses in operation at the time of this writing in mid-August, anticipation for potential job opportunities continue to rise in sequence with job unemployment rates.
As we went from station to station at the facility, each group of employees were doing many differently-styled tasks with two main similarities. One, they were all very monotonous tasks with a factoryline resemblance. Secondly, every single employee I met wore a BIG smile on their face and emitted a contagious positive energy-filled passion for each task they were doing.
At the risk of bursting a potential job seekers bubble during these tough times of job searching, here’s a word of warning from experienced eyes. Trimming may not be the job for you! After touring many cultivation facilities in other states, I’ve learned that each trimming room scene seems a mirror image of the other. Most are lackluster work environments — a mundane job resembling assembly-line work from yesteryear, but instead of hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches, you’ll have trim scissors. If you don’t like repetitive work, this job may not be for you. However, a trimming position can lead to a step up the cannabis connoisseur’s ladder. Keep this in mind on your job search in this emerging industry. The extremely high numbers that leave the trimming room after day two or week two makes it the highest job turnover rate within the cannabis industry. A drawback with seemingly no answer for our 33rd State about to go medical — that is, until now. A few weeks ago, I got a call from David Melton, an account executive with Southeast Enterprises in Independence, MO. They are one of 89 facilities in the state that provide jobs for adults with disabilities. Interested in getting Southeast involved in the cannabis industry, he invited me to tour their facility where I met their CEO, Lauren Hall (photo on left). “The mission of Southeast Enterprises is providing meaningful employment opportunities for adults with developmental differences and helping them live life to the fullest,” Hall explained. “Our primary goal is to continue to develop and offer employment and programs that empower the individuals we serve. It is a powerful win-win partnership when customers are consistently satisfied by the service and quality received from self-confident, determined, and passionate people.”

“At Southeast Enterprises, we know we have uniquely skilled individuals who are exceptional. They are the ‘Intel Inside’ of what sets us apart,” Hall said. “Southeast Associates take deep pride in the quality of their work, attention to detail no matter how small or repetitious, with dependability and passion. Always looking for meaningful and sustainable productive work opportunities, we began exploring the hemp and new MMJ sector, working with State actors, attending conferences, and talking to industry entrepreneurs that aligned with our business development plan and the skills of Southeast associates. We know this sector is getting ready to explode and will need a reliable partner to meet demand. We will learn the
fundamentals, train, and appropriate Agent ID cards for Associates wanting to do this work to be ready to assist businesses in this sector.” This is not only the solution to the trimming debacle for MO MMJ cultivation license winners but for many positions among MIP license winners. Packaging, labeling, assembling — Southeast associates were already doing it, love what they do, and are not only good at it but even better — happier about doing it. There is so much potential here, why stop with the medical side of cannabis when the Hemp industry could use its services too?
in Adrian, MO, the field, by the time you read this article, the timetable study will be near completion, allowing Southwest Enterprises to give accurate bids to any interested new clients. Nate Ruby, an MO MMJ cultivation license winner, is not only ready to hire the first group of trimmers, but has offered his master cultivator, Adam Diltz, to help teach Southwest Enterprises staff proper trimming techniques. Additionally, Hemp Hill in Lexington, MO, plans to hire Southwest Enterprises to prepare all its packaging and labeling work in October.
Halfway through the tour, I could see limitless opportunities and applications that will not only help both industries but simultaneously help those in need in our communities. In my mind, my sleeves were already rolled up as I asked, “Where do we start?” Lauren then began to break down the process of developing a timetable trial, explaining that any time a new client approaches them with a new potential job, they first have one of their non-disabled staff members complete the task while timing them. Then they time a few of their disabled employees performing that same task. “We can customize a contract for an onsite ATM (Associates on The Move) team(s) by the hour per individual/team or a day rate for hours/days onsite, much like a staffing agency for the MMJ sector,” explained Hall. “Southeast will act as a staffing agency for MMJ clients. Our ATM teams are dependable, trained, detail-oriented individuals with Agent ID cards. Southeast not only provides reliable transportation but also a full-time supervisor for each team.” I had to stop her there and ask, “How much extra are the transportation and the staff manager?” “We cover those costs,” said Hall. Not only does the whole team show up, you also have an extra manager for them onsite at no additional cost to the client. Almost too hard to believe, but I was past shocked at this point. “Preferably, ATMs would train in-house at Southwest Enterprises working on perfecting skills needed to come ready with the fundamentals to be successful at work,” Hall said. “Additional skills will be taught and learned onsite. For hemp clients, Southeast can handle customers product in-house. We have a dedicated customer support person that always monitors in-house jobs, is involved in production meetings, and liaisons with our production director and floor manager. Southeast foresees handling hemp products in-house. Customer needs and requirements will vary [e.g., bud trimming, stripping, labeling, packaging]. We would provide a bid based on the service needed, which would require a couple days and some sample product to time-study the task required.” So, all that was needed to get the ball rolling on developing a trimming timetable was a little Hemp to test the waters for this oceanic sized idea. Less than an hour later, I had secured the hemp flower from Michelle Poindexter’s farm in Adrian, MO, called MoCannExtracts. A few minutes later, more materials, like trimming scissors and trays, were donated by Happy Rock Farms owner Jason Davis. Everything fell in place so quickly and easily — it was as if the universe was just waiting to align us. Although the Hemp we secured is still growing
The associates at Southeast Enterprises in Independence, MO, provide limitless opportunities to not only the solution of trimming help for MO MMJ cultivation license winners but also for packaging, labeling and assembling work. They love what they do, and happy about doing it. If you would like more information about becoming a Southwest Enterprises client, visit www.southeastenterprises.org or call Lauren Hall or David Melton at 816.353.2704 to schedule a facility tour. They are open Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. They would love for you to meet the individuals they support who proudly serve businesses within the Kansas City region.

COOKING WITH CANNABIS
by Dana Cunningham, Contributing Writer
ack to school or back to work! — Hopefully. I know life has been super crazy and unpredictable this year, and I hope everyone is just keepin’ on and doing the best they can right now. I know our family is. We are keeping it in high spirits because we know how to find the good in things. Celebrating the silver lining is what keeps us sane sometimes. Also, making sure all our furry friends are happy is a must. If you have ever been a dog or a cat parent, you know that they will take on the anxiety that they feel in the home, much like small children. It can cause them to act out and create a bunch of trouble! What do we do when we must leave our furry friends at home while returning to work and school? Studies suggest that dogs benefit from CBD just as much as humans do. We already know that dogs can be diagnosed with anxiety disorders, and they are prescribed “doggie Xanax.” What is even in that medication, and have you ever taken human Xanax? I hate it, to be blunt! It is the farthest thing from a natural remedy, and it makes the mind clouded with poor judgment. I don’t want to take that stuff, let alone give it to my pup! I give my dog full-spectrum CBD treats that I make myself, and they work perfectly. We go on over-night trips all the time. My family likes to get out and explore. This year we have covered about 3,000 miles just in our home state of Missouri, and we can’t take our pup with us. While she is at home, she’s relaxing with these treats. We never come home to a mess, just a happy, wagging tail and tons of licks! These treats are perfect for when we are having guests over, you know, so she is not super jumpy and loud. They also work well during stormy weather. Is your dog afraid of wind like mine? I had a great response with these treats over
34

the 4th of July. My friends were all telling me that their pups were much less timid during the bang of the fireworks. Even if your dog is calm, cool, and collected, she may be suffering from arthritis or diabetes. That’s another reason to be giving her CBD. Studies show that CBD is an all-natural anti-inflammatory, similar to taking ibuprofen. Wouldn’t you rather give them a little natural relief that is actually good for their bodies? Studies say that full-spectrum CBD shows promise in reducing insulin resistance and moderating blood sugars in humans, and the results are similar with animals. I wouldn’t take your pup off any medication without talking to her vet, but it can’t hurt to add a CBD treat to help them feel better and possibly turn around a yucky situation. Having happy pets is a part of the happy home equation, so let’s get on this recipe and make some happy pet treats for our fur babies. This is the recipe that I use, but feel free to elaborate. You can add bacon or cheese, and if you want them to be dairy-free, use dairy-free powdered milk. You could also use gluten-free flour if you are concerned about your pup’s gluten intake. Sometimes gluten can cause more inflammation.
Ingredients:
1 ½ cup Whole Wheat Flour ¼ cup of Water 2 eggs ¼ cup of powdered milk 2 tablespoons of peanut butter 1 tablespoon of local honey 1 gram of CBD distillate 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
T I W G N I K CO O
H
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. 2. Place your coconut oil and distillate in a double boiler, let it heat until the two have melted and combined, then put the bowl in the refrigerator to cool. 3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs until they are combined. 4. Add in the whole wheat flour, water, powdered milk, peanut butter, honey, and infused coconut oil and blend with a hand mixer or a stand mixer until it forms a dough. 5. Let the dough cool in the refrigerator for one hour. 6. When the dough is cool, sprinkle some whole wheat flour onto a hard, clean surface and roll the dough out to about a 1/3 of an inch 7. Take your cute little cookie cutters (I use cutters that are about 1 ½ inch diameter) and cut out your doggie treats 8. Place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper 9. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, some ovens vary in temperature so check them at 10. 10. Let them cool and store them in the refrigerator or freezer. That’s it! This recipe gets me about 60 small treats at 5 mg CBD each, and to dose, I do one treat per every 20 lbs. My dog is 70 lbs., so I give her four at a time. Just play around with it until you find your pup’s sweet spot. These treats are a super simple and easy way to help your pup stand the long days without the family at home. Better yet, if you don’t feel like making them, I make the treats every week. Order them from my website or my Esty shop. Just search Esty for Infused KC! They are only $30 for 30 treats. Have a great September, Friends, and thank you for reading!

Pet CBD 101 ►
How Can CBD Help Your Dog or Cat? by Chet Davis, Contributing Writer
O
h no! Fido is down and out. You’re thinking about trying CBD for your pet, but you’re not sure about the science of how CBD works. How exactly does CBD help with your pet’s joint discomfort, stress levels, and digestive function? Read on, because after reading this article, you’re going to be a bona fide CBD resource for your friends and family — pets included! You probably have friends who rely on medical cannabis or 50-state-legal CBD to help maintain their health. You may even know some proactive pet parents who are already giving CBD to their pets. You may not know that CBD companies (like Kansas City’s own CBD American Shaman) already offer CBD oils, treats, and pet food for dogs, cats — even horses! With more and more pet products entering the retail market, it’s time for a deep dive into the science of how CBD helps pets stay calm and stress-free, even as they age. First, you may be asking, “What is CBD, anyway?” If you’ve been reading this magazine, you’ll know that THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the molecule produced by the cannabis plant responsible for the “high” produced by using cannabis. Alongside THC, the other major cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant is CBD, or cannabidiol. Unlike THC — CBD has no psychoactive effects and won’t get you or Fido “high” no matter how much you take, and CBD is also non-toxic to pets at any “reasonable” serving size. Your next question might be, “If I need a medical card to buy THC products, why is CBD legal for me and my pets?” The answer is simple. In 2018, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) worked across party lines to ensure that year’s Farm Bill included an act to legalize cannabis and cannabis products containing less than 0.3% THC. These low-THC plants are known as “Hemp” and are legally distinct from marijuana (cannabis), which is still illegal at the federal level. Further, the 2018 Farm Bill specified that all non-THC cannabinoids and products of the hemp plant are legal. Hello, CBD! Now that all the background details are out of the way, it’s time to discuss the science of CBD for pets! When researchers started studying the effects of cannabis, they wanted to determine exactly how THC interacts with the body’s natu-
36
September 2020
ral systems to produce the plant’s famous “high.” What they discovered shocked them; our bodies — and our pets’ bodies — contain a complex signaling mechanism known as the “Endocannabinoid System” (ECS). If you look closely, you’ll notice a familiar word wedged in ECS — cannabinoid! What gives? The Endocannabinoid System is made up of a multitude of cells found throughout the body. The cells that make up the ECS are like the body’s telemedicine system, communicating changes in health in one area of the body to the rest of the body. They communicate those changes by releasing “endocannabinoids,” or “endogenous cannabinoids”— cannabis-like molecules created naturally in the body. The amazing part is these natural cannabinoids created by our pets’ bodies are almost identical to the THC and CBD molecules found in the cannabis plant! These endocannabinoids in our pets are like puzzle pieces. They travel through the body until they find a cell with the right “shape” to lock into. So far, two distinct ECS cell receptor “shapes” have
How CBD1 and CBD2 Can Help Your Pet
CBD for Pets been identified; CB1 and CB2. CB1 is shaped for anandamide (the THC-analogue molecule produced by the body), while CB2 is shaped for 2-AG (the CBD-analogue molecule). We know the locations of these receptors in humans, where CB1 is found mostly in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 is found mostly in the digestive and immune systems. In pets, more research needs to be done on receptor distribution. However, it’s likely that the ECS in our pets closely mirrors our own. Now that you understand how the ECS works, let’s discuss how CBD interacts with our pets’ ECS to support their health! We just discussed how endocannabinoids, or endogenous cannabinoids, are released and used by the endocannabinoid system found in our pets. On the other hand, the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant are called “phytocannabinoids,” or “plant cannabinoids.” When our pets ingest CBD, for example, through a beef and cheese flavored tincture or a tasty CBD-infused treat, that CBD is absorbed through their normal digestive process. It follows the familiar path through their stomach and intestines, and is filtered through their liver where some of the CBD is broken down. If your pet is lucky enough to have access to a Water-Soluble Nano CBD (on left photo of American Shaman product), the smaller particle size of the oil containing the CBD bypasses the somewhat destructive digestive process and enters your pet’s bloodstream immediately! Once the CBD has passed through your pet’s liver and entered their bloodstream, it starts locking into the CB2 receptors in your pet’s Endocannabinoid System. The flood of phytocannabinoids attaching to CB2 receptors in your pet’s immune and digestive system spreads like a warm blanket throughout your pet, crowding out competing signals that may be triggering your pet’s discomfort. As those signals are drowned out, your pet feels a gradual reduction in their uncomfortable feelings. For a pet parent familiar with their pet’s behavior, the effect is hard to miss. If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! You’ve completed an article-length training on the “Science of CBD” for pets (and humans). Now it’s time to get out there and evangelize CBD to your fellow pet parents. Here’s to happy, healthy family members — no matter how many paws they have!

CBD Q&A How much CBD oil should I give my dog? American Shaman recommens giving your dog 2 to 5 mg of CBD per 25 lbs of body weight daily. 5mg is equal to half a mL of our tinctures or water solubles, one of our hard dog treats, or 2 of our soft dog treats per day. All dosage recommendations can be found on the product packaging. CBD oil can also be given to dogs as needed ahead of particularly stressful situations like the vet or the groomer.
How much CBD oil should I give my cat? American Shaman recommens giving your cat 2 to 5 mg of CBD per 8 lbs of body weight daily. 5mg is equal to half a mL of our tinctures or water solubles. All dosage recommendations can be found on the product packaging. CBD oil can be given to cats daily as recommended on the product packaging or as needed for the cat’s specific needs.
Can I use human CBD oil on dogs? The ingredients in CBD products for pets are the same as CBD products for humans. The only difference is the flavor! We do not recommend giving our human CBD products to your pets, and it would be difficult anyway, because dogs and cats do not like to eat the flavors of our human products. Our CBD tincture for dogs is beef and cheese flavor, while our cat CBD tincture is real catnip flavor. That way, you can easily get your pet to take their dose of CBD! Is It Time to Renew Your Patient ID Card? A Card Renewal Survival Guide
How to Come Out Smelling Green!
by Stephen Stearman, Contributing Writer
M
MJ patients are already survivors. They’re veterans and people that traditional medicine has failed. It’s likely that most of them have been made to endure mental and physical anguish while waiting for the world to get woke about the amazing benefits of medical marijuana. So, to call this a survival guide is a tongue-in-cheek way of saying, “You probably got this, but here are some tips to make it go more smoothly.” And while renewing is by no means a harrowing process, there could be some hiccups — hiccups in the form of red-tape type stuff, and bigger hiccups in the form of fraudulent or negligent operations. While there are some super legit clinics ready to help you sail through renewal and to compete for your business with great deals, some wolves in doctors’ clothing have recently surfaced. (I’ll tell you all about it. Promise.) Thankfully, fraud can be avoided. And if prepared, I know you’ll navigate any hiccups — large or small — like a medical card renewing boss. So, to celebrate all those one-year cardholders out there, here’s your very own Renewal Survival Guide. Take as needed.
Congratulations! You Just Got a 30-Day Window! For those of you renewing your MO MMJ card for the first time — IN HISTORY — Happy Anniversary! In observance of your milestone (well, as more of an administrative necessity), the MO DHSS will have started sending you reminders to renew 60 days before your patient/caregiver card expires. Emails are sent at 60, 45, 30, and 15 days before your card expires. The 60 days’ heads-up is because if you don’t want any time to lapse between your expiration and renewal, you will need to renew within 42
September 2020
the 30 to 60-day window. This is because the DHSS can take 30 days to approve or decline your renewal. You can renew after the 30-day mark, but your card may expire before you get approved, i.e., you won’t be able to purchase any green until you get the green light. Hoops — I know.
MO MMJ Card Renewal Checklist You don’t have to be an Eagle Scout, but a little preparation goes a long way. 1. Schedule your recertification appointment with a legit clinic sometime in the 30- 60-day window. 2. Obtain your certification with a valid signature from a physician licensed to practice in Missouri. 3. File with the state and pay the fees. Reapply on the DHSS portal: https://mo-public.mycomplia.com/. The steps are the same as the initial process, except you will not have to provide ID and photo — it will carry over from the previous application. You will, however, need to update your proof of residency. Fees for patient and caregiver licenses are $25 and an additional $100 for a cultivation license. Remember, either you or your caregiver can cultivate for you — not both. 4. If approved for your renewal, you will be able to print your card and be good to go. 5. Clean out your bongs, your bowls, your vape ovens — it’s a new year! Let’s do it up right! (There might even be a badge for that.)
Why Choose a Solid Clinic — A Cautionary Tale This is the story of 600 fake medical marijuana certifications. In June, the DHSS reported that “people” impersonated doctors and signed patient certifications in Missouri. This, of course, rendered those certifications invalid, to the tune of 600 already approved patient applications.
Patient Care
Patients who received these fraudulent certifications will receive notification from the DHSS and be allowed 30 days to resubmit a valid physician certification. Additionally, some clinics and physicians email certifications without encryption, which, you should know, is a breach. Emailing your social security number and other personal medical information is not secure.
a 256-bit encrypted database that is HIPAA compliant. 3. How do I receive my physician certification? The secure, compliant way to receive your certification is through encrypted email or downloading it from a secure dashboard that is HIPAA compliant. 4. Are your patient forms encrypted? Any form you fill out for a clinic online should be encrypted. 5. Is your email encrypted? For clinics that exchange patient information through email, encryption is a must!
In medical marijuana, patients should always come first — with the government, with businesses, and with physicians. You should absolutely expect convenience, affordability, compassion, and security from all of these entities. If not, they do not deserve your loyalty. So, how can you get all that under one umbrella?
If you follow your checklist and these guidelines for finding a legit clinic, you’ll weed out the wolves and the folks who don’t put your interest as a patient first. The citizens of Missouri made medical marijuana happen so that patients could have safe access without undue burden and to finally give support back to veterans. Let’s not let a few frauds ruin our good thing. There are many cannabis businesses and services out there that align with the patient-first philosophy. I’m confident you can have a great and successful renewal process in Missouri.
How to Screen a Clinic Ask questions. A good clinic will have this information upfront on their website. But go ahead, interview them like they’re on the witness stand if you want. It’s your health, and it’s every bit as valuable in a cannabis clinic setting as it is in any other healthcare facility. Here are the five main questions I recommend people ask when considering a clinic: 1. Are your doctors licensed to practice in Missouri? The answer should always be “yes.” 2. How do you store my data? Your patient data should be stored in

Strokes: Protecting the Brain and Recovering with Cannabis
H
by Peter Kershaw, Contributing Writer
ippocrates, “the father of medicine,” documented some 2400 years ago a condition he termed “apoplexy,” a Greek word meaning “struck down by violence.” Today we call it a stroke. A stroke is the sudden deprivation of blood flow to a portion of the brain, usually by a blockage. Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. Strokes are also the number one cause of disability among adults. According to the National Stroke Association, nearly 800,000 people experience a stroke each year, and over 140,000 of those will die. The risk for stroke is a serious matter that’s given far less regard by the public than it deserves. However, there are things we can do to reduce the risk for stroke and significantly improve the likelihood of successful recovery should we have a stroke. Cannabis can play a significant role. Eighty-seven percent of all strokes are ischemic strokes, the balance being hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes are caused by the sudden blockage of blood vessels from blood clots. The rupture of blood vessels causes Hemorrhagic strokes. In the event of stroke symptoms, immediate emergency medical attention should be sought. Patient outcomes vary based upon the severity of the stroke, the quality of emergency care received, and how quickly they receive it. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is now thought to be a leading cause of strokes. DVT is blood clots that accumulate in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually the legs. If any of these clots break free and travel to the heart, it can result in a heart attack. If they enter the brain, it can result in a stroke. Millions of Americans have DVT. Many go undiagnosed. Those diagnosed will likely be prescribed a blood thinner such as Heparin and an anticoagulant like Warfarin. However, these don’t address the underlying cause of what often led to DVT in the first place, and they often have unpleasant side-effects. Nattokinase, a natural blood clot dissolving enzyme, originating from the popular Japanese food “natto,” has shown remarkable promise. Nattokinase safely breaks down blood clots without harmful side-effects. Taken regularly, it may dramatically reduce the risk of DVT and, therefore, ischemic strokes. Vitamin K has also been shown to reduce blood clot formation. Are there other things that can mitigate the risk of strokes? Absolutely. Cigarette smokers are at a much higher risk for stroke (not to mention heart disease and cancer). Needless to say, if you’re a smoker and want to reduce your risk of stroke, you should quit. However, studies have shown there to be no increased risk of stroke from smoking cannabis. Many have successfully kicked the cigarette habit by substituting cannabis or hemp cigarettes. Other lifestyle risk factors that increase the risk for stroke include obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise.
Though cannabis consumption hasn’t been proven to reduce the risk for stroke (the jury is still out), regular use has been shown to have strong neuroprotective properties. These properties may be beneficial in the event of a stroke. Ischemic stroke victims admitted to the hospital are most commonly administered tPA, a protein 44
September 2020
that dissolves blood clots. If administered within four hours of stroke onset, tPA can save your life. However, the patient still faces potential complications, such as post-stroke immune responses. Brain inflammation can result in further brain damage leading to a progressive decline in cognitive function. Cannabinoids (in particular THC and CBD) have demonstrated the ability to block the release of pro-inflammatory compounds in the brain, thus increasing the likelihood of better outcomes for stroke victims. It should come as little surprise then that cannabis consumption can also be of significant benefit to those who’ve suffered a concussion or traumatic brain injury. Consuming before or immediately after a head injury may prevent altogether the swelling and inflammation that could otherwise result in permanent brain damage. But even consuming long after a brain injury has occurred can still be of considerable benefit. The NFL would see a lot fewer brain injury problems if they permitted players to consume cannabis. In a 1998 study by the National Institute of Mental Health, NIMH stated, “a chemical in marijuana may protect the brain from damage inflicted by a stroke.” (National Academy of Sciences, Cannabidiol and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol Are Neuroprotective Antioxidants). The cannabinoids block a neurochemical, known as glutamate, that leads to the formation of toxic oxidizing molecules that kill brain cells. Glutamate is produced in the brain if the oxygen supply is cut off. Cannabis has also been shown to improve neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change throughout an individual’s life, such as how synapses strengthen and weaken over time. Improved neuroplasticity may prove beneficial to the stroke victim and improve their chances for a full recovery. As stroke victims recover at home, they often manifest mood swings. These may include depression, anxiety, despair, hopelessness, frustration, fear, anger, and sadness. If they’re homebound for very long, they may lash out at their caregivers. There may be weeks of doctor follow up visits, and potentially months of physical and occupational therapy. Even if it didn’t include any emotional drama, it can be quite stressful and taxing being a caregiver and chauffeur for a recovering stroke victim. From personal experience, I know that the last thing we need as caregivers is to be treated as an emotional wastebasket. Thankfully cannabis can do wonders for a stroke victim’s emotional disposition (not to mention their caregiver’s). Since both THC and CBD are beneficial for stroke victims, one should select cannabis strains with a reasonable balance/ratio between the two.
