Slocan “Owl Walk” Thanks to the provincial Community and Employer Partnership fund., four work experience program participants in the Village of Slocan are sharpening their carpentry and construction skills as part of an effort to establish destination recreational trails through the region’s western screech owl habitat. Since May 2015, they have laid new chip trails, deconstructed an old wildfire crew camp and will be building a new information kiosk and signs out of the salvaged camp materials later this month. Trail animal shelter to move The Trail Regional animal shelter, located at 7700 Highway 3B is in extremely poor condition and is too small to serve the needs of the community. The BCSPCA is committed that the closure of the Trail facility will go hand in hand with the opening of a new BC SPCA facility that can meet the future needs of homeless and abused animals in the area. At an estimated cost of $1.6 million. funding for the new facility has not been secured, however, very recently, the City of Castelgar approached the BC SPCA expressing interest in participating in the project. https://www.facebook.com/bcspca.trail

New fires in Southeast Fire Centre, Rock Creek continues new fires visible The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a number of new fires that are highly visible from surrounding communities throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. None of these fires are immediately threatening any communities or structures, however due to their location the public may see an increase in smoke and air operations in response to these incidents. -The fire 5.6 km northwest of Renata is currently 8 hectares and has shown rapid growth. Seven firefighters and one helicopter are on site, assisted by airtankers. -The Tenderloin Creek fire is currently 10 hectares and is located 6.5km east of West Arrow Lake. Airtankers are on site. -The Hanna Creek fire is currently 0.3 hectares and is located 8km

northwest of Trail. One BC Wildfire Service Initial Attack crew is on site assisted by a helicopter. -The Kelly Mountain fire is currently 0.13 hectares and is 6.5km northeast of Fruitvale. There are 5 firefighters on site. Officials from the BC Wildfire Service met this morning with the Incident Management Team on the Stickpin fire, 7 km south of the Canada / U.S. border in Washington State. Discussions are underway on how to potentially assist our neighbours to the south with suppression efforts on this fire. Fire near Rock Creek continues to burn The wildfire which started west of Rock Creek near Highway 3 is currently estimated at 3750 hectares. The larger estimated size of this fire today is due to increased visibility in the area which has permitted more accurate mapping. The majority of the fireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth took place on August 13, but heavy smoke previously limited mapping capabilities. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has completed an assessment of damage in the area and has confirmed that 29 homes and additional structures have been lost. An Evacuation Order and an additional Evacuation Alert issued by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary remains in effect. Growing Up (Or the Lack Thereof)

As we grow in age, so do the amount of things we must be responsible for. I don’t know about you but this scares me immensely. Being responsible isn’t an issue, it’s taking into account all of the things I feel responsible for. But taking these responsibilities is a necessity. You don’t want the feeling of being inferior that you get for not achieving as much as your peers. I do however find it best not to compare your accomplishments to those of others if you feel inad-

equate in comparison. I often find myself overwhelmed and yearning for days where a lack of responsibilities was the norm. Of course, I take care of what’s needed, but I still can’t help to yearn for those days again. It’s all right to indulge in many of your childhood interests, even at an older age; you must simply take care of your responsibilities in a timely matter. It’s best to take a look at everything and accomplish it in a way that optimizes your productivity.
