Greetings Champions, New years are synonymous with resolutions. We set our targets and set it to start on January 1st, and as we approach the year-end, we reflect and appraise them to see how many of those goals have been achieved, and then we probably will restrategise or enhance. Having set a target and chart them out, we have a better chance not to steer away from our focus. The same is important in order to grow be it as a small team, department, organisation, or on a personal basis. As a Protasco Champion, we all possess a tool that can assist us towards achieving our common goals. The tool that I am referring to is our compass, which consists of our Vision, Mission and Core Values. As a champion of Protasco, our reflection should be what has been our contribution to the organisation in the past year. At the same time, let us remind ourselves that these contributions that we have achieved for the organisation are also, in fact, personal achievements. After all, it is our work place and I’m sure we all want to work with a successful organisation. Don’t you think the saying ‘you reap what you sow’ rings true? May we all have a bountiful 2017

“We understand that business Diversification is a way to move forward and to reduce economic risks on the organisation. Being involved in more than one industry means we can lean on another in the face of an adversity in any of the others”
Dear Champions, It has not been an easy 2016 and 2017 has also been forecasted to be even more challenging for businesses. Protasco too is affected by the challenging global economy. For the third quarter of 2016, Protasco Berhad Group maintained its revenue which was largely due to the performance of its Construction Division from the ‘Perumahan Penjawat Awam 1Malaysia’ (PPA1M) Phase 1 project. Interestingly, Protasco became increasingly more active in building construction only less than 5 years ago as we saw the need to diverse from our more traditional business of pavement recycling and road construction. We understand that business diversification is a way to move forward and to reduce economic risks on the organisation. Being involved in more than one industry means we can lean on another in the face of an adversity in any of the others. Therefore, with strength and skill set developed within the Group we are now focusing in 6 main activities. Strong and clear direction ensures the whole organisation remain competitive in all its business activities.
sure that they know they are working with one established Protasco brand. It is through this brand that, we make a promise to them that they are dealing with an organisation that upholds professionalism and integrity. To facilitate the organisation to move forward and to take advantage of its various business links, Protasco champions shall be guided by a Brand Book that will be made available in January 2017. Another immediate area of focus is talent management. Management styles have evolved with the availability of new talents that are more creative and behaving in unconventional ways. Diversity in talents and skills is highly encouraged to avoid groupthink and singlemindedness. In 2017, Protasco’s champions can look forward to more extensive Human Resource programs that will provide guide in the talent management and succession planning. Protasco will continue to undertake learning and development efforts to ensure our talents are kept abreast with the latest in the industry. Moving forward, Protasco will tread boldly but cautiously into 2017. We shall continue to uphold our corporate values in effort to achieve our Protasco Vision. Happy New Year
With diversification come new challenges. We now have to deal with different markets and various stakeholders. Therefore, we must make
Vision To be internationally acclaimed conglomerate ensuring growth and delivering value for a better quality of life.

Protasco to launch RM600 mil affordable homes at De Centrum by 2Q17 “We feel that in order to buck the market trend, we have to concentrate more on affordable housing. The recent Budget 2017 also announced several affordable housing measures, so our strategy is in line with the government’s move to build more affordable housing. Berhad will be launching affordable homes with a gross development value (GDV) of RM600 million at its De Centrum City township in Kajang by the second quarter of 2017 (2Q17), as the group capitalises on the strong demand for this segment amid a subdued property market. Dato’ Sri Ir Chong Ket Pen said, the local property industry is still facing a challenging time amid the various cooling measures imposed. He added that the dampened market has impacted its Rimbawan project at De Centrum, which offers middle to upmarket units priced between RM800,000 and RM1.5 million. “We feel that in order to buck the market trend, we have to
concentrate more on affordable housing. The recent Budget 2017 also announced several affordable housing measures, so our strategy is in line with the government’s move to build more affordable housing. So we will be emphasising more on affordable phases to be launched.” Protasco is looking at launching the affordable houses in two phases, with each phase valued at RM300 million, on an eight-acre (3.24ha) piece of land within the De Centrum township. Meanwhile, the RM350 million GDV Rimbawan development will go on but the construction works will only commence when bookings reach 40%.
Currently, bookings stand at around 30%. The launch of the development had already been pushed back, which was supposed to be in June this year. Protasco now aims to launch the project before end-2016. The group is doing a feasibility study to develop the seven acres of land it owns in Sandakan, Sabah, seeing as more developments are popping up in the vicinity of the tract. Protasco is also looking to develop the 14 acres it owns in Pasir Gudang, Johor, could comprise three-storey and four-storey shops. IUKL develops mapping risk areas for detecting landslide susceptibility in Malaysia Putrajaya, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) is developing an index of probability of landslide occurrence in Peninsular Malaysia.
The “ROAR Index” for landslide susceptibility to reduce casualties and damage was being done by its I-Geo Disaster Research Centre, said the university’s vice-chancellor and president Prof Dr Roslan Zainal Abidin. “This index is a probability prediction of landslide occurrence and may benefit policy-makers or authorities in making early decisions on landslide-prone locations in the peninsula,” he said. The ROAR Index, the first of its kind being developed that incorporates soil stratigraphy and soil series in the country, started in January and is expected to be completed by the end of next year, he said in an interview. At present, there are the ROSE Index (degree of rainfall erosivity), the ROM Scale (degree of soil erodibility) and the RS Chart that are used predict landslide occurrences, he added. Roslan said the ROAR Index for landslide susceptibility was an extension that complemented those indices. The ROAR Index encapsulated the use of soil stratigraphy and the soil series map produced by the Mineral and Geosciences Department and Agricultural Department, respectively, he said. Prior to the development of the ROAR Index, he said, historical records of landslide cases were tagged by making inferences between the associated soil strata and soil series.
16 ProtascoNewsletter
A total of 38 cases were tagged spanning 1993 to 2008 in the peninsular. “The research is about 40% completed. “At present, we are mapping risk areas throughout Peninsular Malaysia,” Roslan said. Head of I-Geo Disaster Research Centre, Department of Civil Engineering Dr Mohd Sofiyan Sulaiman said that based on past records, landslides would always occur in the same geological and soil series. “It is predicted that urban land and acid intrusive rocks dominate the causative factors for landslide in the country,” he said. Following the landslide that struck Taman Idaman in Serendah, Selangor, on Nov 26, Mohd Sofiyan said the team conducted landslide assessments in the affected area by inferring the ROAR Index.
