Welcome to the 47th Annual

Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival SM

The Official Shrimp Festival of North Carolina Lisa A. Hamner, 2017 Chairperson We are happy to be able to continue our fresh seafood market. Take home some fresh local seafood to cook at your own home. We have invited the seafood houses to come and sell their fresh local catch. Festival attendees will be able to by the best of our local shrimp, fish, crabs, clams, oysters, etc. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity.

It is my pleasure to Welcome you to the 47th Annual Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival! This year has been full of blessings and challenges! I am excited to announce that we will be offering a ride all day wristband for $10 per person to enjoy riding both the mechanical rides and bounces. You will be able to enjoy festival classics like the ferris wheel and carousel as well as other traditional fair rides and attractions.

Have you been practicing?? It’s almost time for the Annual Shrimp Heading Contest! The contest located under the large pavilion on Saturday, August 12 beginning at 12:30. Make sure you come show off your talent as the fastest shrimp header in town! Or get a lesson in shrimp heading for the first time!

This year, we will also be hosting the inaugural Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Barbecue Cook Off to see who can create the best barbecue around. We have added items to our Shrimply Fabulous Souvenirs with long sleeve t-shirts, hoodies and sip and mister cups. We will also have our award winning spice sets, named North Carolina’s Best Merchandise 2017.

Get the most current information and news about the Shrimp Festival on our facebook page and website www. sneadsferryshrimpfestival.org.

Also new this year will be a mascot race on Saturday, where you can see area mascots race to see who is the fastest mascot. We will also be host to cowboy roping demonstrations all weekend. We have added a special section to our website, “Eat Local”; where you can find a place to buy local wild caught seafood to take home and prepare or a Sneads Ferry Favorite Restaurant serving up the local catch. You may have also noticed the new billboard upon entering Sneads Ferry via Highway 172 that encourages visitors to “Eat Local”. I am so very proud to present our cover artwork available as prints and on our annual t-shirts, by our very own Sneads Ferry artist, Phil Christman. Phil was so very generous to work with the festival committee in producing

this year’s design as his personal gift back to the community. Prints and t-shirts are available for sale at our mini store at the Community Center prior to the festival and at the merchandise tent Shrimp Festival weekend. Our Shrimparoo dinner will again this year be prepared by our volunteers and the volunteers from the Carolina Museum of the Marine with all of the shrimp caught by our local Sneads Ferry fishing fleet. The full plate dinner includes a half pound of fried or boiled shrimp, French fries, coleslaw, hush puppies and sweet tea.

Remember to thank a committee member (those hard working individuals wearing a festival staff shirt), these folks have been involved all year helping to prepare for an awesome festival! Also be sure to thank our volunteers when you see them, without their hard work and dedication festival weekend this festival would not be possible. I would like to personally thank the festival planning committee and the Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department, their partnership and dedication to this community are truly amazing! Also, a big thanks to this year’s sponsors. I look forward to seeing you all at the 47th Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival! Lisa Hamner Chairperson

The cover art and t-shirt art depicts our great fishing village.

About Phil Christman, the artist of this year’s Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Artwork A North Carolina native, Phil has been painting since 1985. After years of painting murals and faux finish work, Phil can now focus on fine art painting full time. Some of Phil’s work can be seen as the back drops for events at the Sneads Ferry Community Center, the mural at the recently opened Outriggers 21 Restaurant and on display at the Sea View Motel. Phil will also be on hand to sign our festival prints and if we are lucky he may have some of his work on display at the festival! Also, another big thank you goes out to Jason and Sarah Davis with Loggerhead Digital Printing. They took Mr. Christman’s artwork and turned it into this years t-shirt and book cover.

History Of Sneads Ferry Written in 1971 by Virginia Midgett

Sneads Ferry is located in Onslow County, North Carolina, between Jacksonville and Wilmington and the inlet where the New River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Sneads Ferry, fi rst known as the lower ferry, was renamed for Robert Snead, an attorney who settled here in 1791. Robert Snead shot and killed Colonel George W. Mitchell, Revolutionary War Hero during a political quarrel. He was tried and convicted by a superior court in Wilmington, but when he entered the court for sentencing, he carried a full pardon signed by the Governor. The mystery surrounding this matter is now obscure, as is most of the early history of Sneads Ferry. However, we do know that the fi rst license to operate a ferry here was granted to Edmund Ennett and that the fi rst post road from Suffolk to Charleston crossed here. The post rider, passing through, brought the news of the battle of Lexington in 1775. Visitors to Sneads Ferry will fi nd that it has much to offer, whether their stay is but a few hours or for many days. Besides the blue skies, plenty of sunshine, sparkling waters, soft breezes and friendly people. There are fishing skiffs for rent for fishing and boating in the river and sounds and charter boats with licensed captains for fishing in the

ocean. Here, too, are cabins and trailer space and several fi rst class restaurants where one is served the best seafood in the world and most any other foods you might want. For those who would like to prepare their own picnic lunches, there are up-to-date grocery stores with courteous proprietors to serve you and there are places where one may obtain fuel, bait, ice, tackle and other boating and fishing needs. Sneads Ferry is a many faceted place, a composite of old and new, the old-fashioned and the modern, the slow easy ways of the old south and the fast moving pace of the new. Here are old-fashioned frame church houses and modern brick ones, but the aims and dedication of the people who enter are all the same. Here are houses many more years than a hundred old, while near by are new homes being built, along with a bank, the fi rst one in the history of Sneads Ferry. A few years ago, a modern fi re station was built with up-to-date fi re fighting and rescue equipment. It is operated by

volunteers who give unselfishly of their time when their services are needed by anyone. This unselfishness and care for others is a trait, deep-rooted in the hearts of the people of Sneads Ferry. They are always ready to give of themselves, their time and their worldly goods, without question to anyone in need. They make few, if any newspaper headlines, but their headlines are written deep in the hearts of the ones who have known their kindness and generosity. In Sneads Ferry are gray, weathered fish houses, lashed by many a salty gale, the wood floors trampled by many a salty fisherman. Near by are sleek new trucks for taking away the bounty from the boats moored at the barnacled docks. Here are solid trustworthy fishing skiffs, sharing the waters with swift as birds motor boats and people from near and far travel the expanse of the river and out the inlet where it is said that Blackbeard slipped silently in to hid his ill-gotten gains from other pirates in a time of long ago. Because it was fi rst settled along the shores, Sneads Ferry has always been known mainly for its commercial fishing. many of the fisherman today, with their motorized boats and underwater floundering lights, are the son, grandsons and great-grandsons of fisherman who in their day, used flaming lightwood knots on a wire basket for floundering and depended on strong arms

and stout oars to take them and their homemade boats to their favorite fishing grounds. Many evening they rowed long, hard miles to reach the schools of big mullet, or in search of the elusive trout. Many times they came home with an empty boat, but although they were discouraged, they were never defeated. There was always tomorrow. Too, there were nets to mend and time to gather in the shade of the live oaks and reminisce of big catches made in the past. Many times the fish were scarce and the price was low, which meant the fisherman and his family hardly had enough to live on and no luxuries at all, but they had hope, pride and a strong faith that the good Lord would provide. He always did. There was always plenty to eat in the river. One could always catch enough for a meal and there were oysters, washed and clean by the flowing tides, to be roasted slowly over an outdoor fi re. What a mouthwatering feast they were, especially when eaten with crispy crackling cornbread and washed down withcold fresh water from an old hand pump. Today there are few small commercial fishing boats. Most

SM

of the fishermen have boats large enough to brave the sometimes contrary Atlantic and instead of depending entirely on the river mullet, flounder and trout, they search the outside waters for shrimp and blackfish. The opening of the shrimp season means the difference between doing without things the fisherman and his family need and having money for a few extras. In many ways things have changed in Sneads Ferry, but in some ways the past is still a part of the people. Many of the old ways and customs still live and there is a special dignity and peace of mind in being your own boss. This is the inheritance of the fisherman, handed down through the centuries from the fisherman of old Galilee. Yes Sneads Ferry has many sides. Here too, are fertile farms and gardens from where in summer we enjoy the honest to goodness freshness of corn, beans, red ripe

20 | 47th Annual Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival • 2017

tomatoes and other good things furnished by mother Nature, with a lot of help from the hard working people who still love the earth and growing things. In Sneads Ferry, there are hard paved roads leading to Highway 17 and then on to anyplace. Here also are dusty lanes that, too, lead to anyplace or no place, where one can wander and dream in the shade of the signing pines and giant oaks. In the spring, one can thrill to the beauty of snow white dogwoods and breathe in the sweetness of the golden yellow wild jasmine that grows in profusion everywhere.

What is Sneads Ferry? Some would call it a lazy little fishing village, and a very small dot on the map. Some might say it is the fastest growing little town in North Carolina. To us, the people who love it, it is the best place in all the world. It is Home.

The History of Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival The Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival celebrated it’s 46th year on August 13th & 14th 2016. With this year being the 47th Annual Shrimp Festival we are expecting a large crowd. A tradition that began as a way to honor the local fishing village has grown over the years, drawing crowds of more than 10,000 people. On May 3, 2011, the festival was name the “Official Shrimp Festival of North Carolina”, by the bill sponsored by Senator Harry Brown and passed by the North Carolina General Assembly. This begins a new milestone in the history of the festival. So one begs to ask, “How did the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival get started?” Well, a group of businessmen got together over coffee one morning in 1971 and decided it was time we share our delicious shrimp with the outside world and honor the fishing village that harvest them. It was decided at that time that each subsequent festival would be held the second weekend in August. “The reason they picked August is because it’s the peak of shrimping season here,” according to Bernice Guthrie, who has been involved with the festival for the past 44 years and is the only original member still actively involved in the festival. “Plus when school is out, more visitors and tourist are able to come,” she added. The event would not be complete without a Queen, so a contest was contest was held on Saturday, August 14, 1971. That first year everything was graciously donated to get the festival off to a good start. The first Shrimp Festival Queen was Vennie Bush, niece of Cecil Parker, our first Chairman.

was formed and incorporated as a non-profit organization. The second year everyone pitched in, including the merchants, the Marine Corps and the community who worked all day preparing and serving the shrimp, hushpuppies and slaw. The Shrimp Ball was also added to the festival in 1972. Traditionally held the weekend before the festival, the Shrimp Ball has grown into the largest community dinner dance event of the year. The ball introduces the newly crowned queens to the community, offers a father daughter first dance and fiends and family gather to share good times and food. The first Shrimp Festival was held down on Fulcher’s Landing in 1971. In 1972, it moved to the riverfront property where the Saratoga Restaurant was on Highway 172. In 1973, it was held at the end of Peru Road, near the water. In 1974, it was held in the field across the road from Jack Millis’ house. In 1975, we leased the site on Stone Bay located on Highway 172, by the back gate of Camp Lejeune. “The first five festivals we had were right down in the heart of Sneads Ferry. That was the only time we had ever seen traffic jams,” according to Guthrie. Traffic was such a problem at the earlier sites that the committee needed to find a place that could accommodate all of the events at the same place. In 1976,the committee elected to purchase a wooded 10 acre tract of land to provide a permanent home for the festival as well as a community park for its residents. The Shrimp Festival has been held on the site ever since.

In 1972, a Shrimp Festival Committee

SM

By 1990, the Shrimp Festival Committee finally achieved their ultimate goal and built a community building on the site. The building serves as a meeting place for several of Sneads Ferry’s community events. As the years passed, improvements to the building were added as well as a covered bandstand and covered shelters. “We just improve it each year – we’re really proud of our community building.” Guthrie said. Over the years, the Shrimp Festival Committee has donated proceeds from the festival to help the community. They set up a Scholarship Fund in 1982 for our Miss Shrimp and a deserving high school senior living in the Sneads Ferry area. They also contributed to the start-up of the Sneads Ferry Library and in obtaining the land for the Fire & Rescue Squad – land that lays adjacent to the Community Building. The Shrimp Festival Committee continues to support the Fire & Rescue Squad with annual donations, as well as provide assistance to several other programs throughout the community. Through all of the changes the Shrimp Festival has endured, it has continued to grow. Currently, the two-day festival includes a parade, music, shrimp heading contest, fireworks, car show, military exhibitors, arts and crafts, lots of food and lots of shrimp! Its continued success is a direct result of the dedication and determination of the citizens of Sneads Ferry and folks like you who come to celebrate not only your love of shrimp, but the love of a community that cherishes its past, its present and its determination to preserve the future.

How to Buy Shrimp Shrimp are sold by count per pound. Counts are expressed as a range. For example, 26/30 means that 26 to 30 of them make one pound. The smaller the size, the higher the count. Differentials between one grade and the next are often substantial, and getting the correct grade is crucial. Counts within a given range should be as uniform in size as possible. The ideal is shrimp that are all exactly the same size. Counts are occasionally expressed in names rather than numbers, such as “Jumbo” and “Extra Large”.

Man has tamed the wilderness and bridged the river’s span; Leveled mountains, stripped the earth with unrelenting hand… But, yet the sea, the vagrant sea, no human hand can tame; For from the time God bade it be, the sea has been the same. Through changing time, as ages pass, its ceaseless breakers roll; The thunder of its music sounds in every kindred soul… It’s borne the storms of countless years and felt the rains and snows; It’s shone beneath a billion suns, a billion soft moon glows… Its siren song has led men on, the strong ones and the brave; And wrapped in the shrouds of misty fogs, have lured some to their grave. It gives to those who, with respect reap with a willing hand; And shares its wild sweet majesty with those who understand. It’s part of earth and wind and sky and yet, has never known; Any rule that’s human made but by God’s law alone… No man has touched its darkest depth or solved its mystery; And none can ever hold enchained, the sea, the untamed sea.

Shelby Taylor Farewell From The Miss Shrimp Festival Queen 2016 Wow, this year has really flown by! I am so blessed to have spent this year with some of the most amazing young women! There are so many people I would like to thank for this incredible year. First, and most importantly, I would like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity to represent my community and always watching over me. I would also like to give a big thank you to my Nana for being the best pageant grandma a girl could ask for. I’ve loved being able to

SM

spend time with you throughout this year and go to my events with you. Thank you to my family for being very supportive this year and always making sure I look great for my events. Next, I would like to thank the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Committee and Jennifer Thrash for keeping this pageant going and giving all of us girls the chance to know one another and make lifelong memories. To Paisley, Adallyn, Georganna, Madison, and Faith: I have loved watching you all grow over

the past year. You all have such fun personalities and I know you will go on to do big things in life, I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for you. I love you all from the bottom of my heart! To the next shrimp queen, cherish every moment and remember to take lots of pictures because it’ll be over before you know it. For the last time, I am Shelby Taylor, your 2016-2017 Miss Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Queen. Thank you! Shelby Taylor

Austin Antinori

Farewell From The Mr. Shrimp Festival King 2016 This past year being named the 2016-2017 Shrimp King has truly been an honor. From having a blast at the Shrimp Ball with all of my family and friends to riding in my very first parade, every event that we’ve had I can tell a different story about each one and what a great time I’ve had with the community. To all of the kings and queens, I became close with each and every one of you and I hope we will all stay connected with one another. To the future kings and queens, some advice I could give is to get to

know everybody involved because you’ll be sharing some amazing memories with them. I have been a part of this community all of my life so taking on this important role will forever be a favorite chapter in my book. Stay true to yourself, trust in God and lead by faith.”

2017 Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Grand Marshall Mr. Alton James Norris Jr. Alton James Norris Jr. is known simply as “Jr.” to his family and friends. He is Captain of the Theresa Marie out of Mitchell Seafood in Sneads Ferry and he is carrying on a tradition of pride and hard work that he knows is vital to the survival of a coastal fishing village. Inspired and guided by his father, Jr. embraces the fact that fishing is in his blood. He hopes that his contributions on the water and in his hometown will be remembered and sustained by younger generations of fishermen like his oldest son Joel. Jr. says that, [his] “heart is in the river and there’s nothing else [he] would rather do.” His lifetime dedication to his hometown and its many traditions set him apart from others in the fishing industry. It is with great honor that we honor Mr. Jr. Norris as the 2017 Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival Grand Marshall.

The wind howls like a banshee, The waves roll wild and high… The spray’s so thick and smothering, One cannot see the sky. The storm is on the ocean, The sailor’s nerve is gone… But, yet the captain of the ship, Has one command, “Sail on.” Sometimes, our lives are stormy, The winds of trouble blow… And through the mist of sorrows, The way we do not know. We try to fight the currents, Till hope is almost gone… But God, who charts our voyage, So gently says, “Sail on.” www.SneadsFerryShrimpFestival.org | 67

Fish Houses of Sneads Ferry Although our local Seafood Houses buy and sell tens of thousands of pounds of fresh, local Shrimp, Fish, Oysters, Clams, Crabs etc. to wholesale markets, they will also gladly sell it directly to the public. So please stop by and let them show you how to head and peel shrimp, fillet fish or shuck oysters and clams. Stop by and watch our local fishermen haul in their catch from the boat ... and if you ask them nicely, they might even head the shrimp for you (heading fee may apply.) Please submit updated information for Fish Houses of Sneads Ferry to shrimpfestbook@gmail.com
