STUDIO JOBURG READY FOR ACTION
Studio Joburg launched in April 2016 and is a joint venture between the Joburg Expo Centre and All Africa Investment Corporation.
L
aunched to the media in April 2016, Studio Joburg is a joint venture between the Joburg Expo Centre and All Africa Investment Corporation (AAIC). It is based at the Joburg Expo Centre premises at Nasrec, near the FNB Stadium. It consists of a 50-hectare property containing nine halls of various sizes, as well as substantial infrastructure (parking, catering facilities, storage, a lake, sky train, grass oval, etc.). It is the perfect location for filming with plenty of space for backlots, prop and set storage, production offices and halls ranging from 2 000m2 to 9 000m2. AAIC is a company consisting of a group of experienced TV,
film and finance professionals. These include Eddie Mbalo, former CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation, Clarence Hamilton, a writer, producer and script editor also formerly of the NFVF, and Simon Woodland, formerly of McKinsey and recent CFO of On Digital Media. In the last month, AAIC is delighted to welcome a new shareholder on board, Mfundi Vundla, Producer of Generations and well-known doyen of the industry.
PLANS FOR 2017
Studio Joburg is aiming to secure several TV productions in 2017, commencing from early in January. It looks likely that
these will be long-running daily soap operas, which will provide a good baseload of business. We are also working on a business plan to secure funding to convert one of the large halls into two full sound stages of 2 000m2. These will be aimed at international and local feature film productions. The halls will be fully sound proofed with appropriate entry and exit points, suspended floors and ducted air conditioning. We will continue talking to companies with related services such as props, set building, wardrobes and a film school about relocating to the site in order to create a vibrant content creation hub.

The Wound tells the story Xolani, a lonely Xhosa factory worker who joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel. The Wound was co-written by John Trengove, Thando

It was shot entirely in South Africa with an all-male Xhosa cast. “What a privilege to have worked with this fearless cast and insanely talented team of collaborators. I am so grateful for the many Xhosa men who
contributed in big ways and small ways, and, miraculously, trusted me to make this film. Whatever comes next, we made The Wound with our eyes and hearts wide open,” says Trengove. The Wound is a co-production between South Africa, Germany, The Netherlands and France and was shot on location in the northern region of South Africa. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR
THE REALNESS
PAN AFRICAN SCRIPTWRITING RESIDENCY 2017 Following the success of the inaugural scriptwriting residency, Realness is thrilled to announce the call for submissions for the 2017 edition.
R
ealness is a pioneering residency that provides filmmakers with the opportunity to hone and develop their creative scriptwriting skills. It serves to address the need for promising African film projects to be supported in their development phase to be able to realistically compete in global film markets. This year five filmmakers - Amirah Tajdin (Kenya), Hiwot Admasu (Ethiopia) Luck Razanajaona (Madagascar), Sheetal Magan (South Africa) and Wim Steytler (South Africa) spent six weeks at the Nirox Artists’ Residency in the Cradle of Humankind under the mentorship of script consultants Selina Ukwuoma and Nadja Dumouchel, including attending the Durban FilmMart and Talent Campus at the Durban International Film Festival. “The success of this residency is not only evident in the encouraging feedback from the participants, who welcomed the opportunity to be in a quiet headspace to tap into their creative sources, but it is also evident in the numerous awards they have received and the progress made following the residency,” explains Elias Ribeiro, Creative Director of Realness. “Luck, for example, had a project selected for the Durban FilmMart prior to the residency, where we met and worked with participants as a precursor to programme. Here he walked off with awards from CineMart (International
Film Festival Rotterdam) and the International Organisation of La Francophonie to further develop his script. Hiwot has since won an award to participate at another residency programme in Switzerland — the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, and two of the projects have signed co-production agreements since completing the residency.” As a result of the Realness programme, Ribeiro has been invited to present the initiative at five major international festivals since starting it earlier this year, namely Berlinale, Cannes, Locarno, Venice and Torino. “The continued interest is very encouraging and serves as a platform for the residents to maintain the momentum towards getting their films made. We have structured Realness in a very holistic and strategic way, engaging with heavyweight partners and advisors in developing the framework for the programme. It is rewarding to see the genuine interest in developing synergy between African cinema and the rest of the world.” Amirah Tajdin said “Realness made me realize that…time and space really does make all the difference during script writing.” Wim Steytler said that Realness gave him the courage to “throw my script and eight months of work into the bin. I gained important insights into how to take my story from decent to good. After Realness, my goal is to take the project from good to great.”
Realness is proud to announce that the partnerships established in 2016 will continue into the second edition, which means that the 2017 residents will also have the opportunity to further develop their projects through the awards offered by the Durban FilmMart, Locarno Filmmakers Academy, Torino Film Lab, Midpoint, EAVE and La Fabrique des Cinema du Monde. The submission window opened on 28 November 2016 and closes on 31 January 2017. Applicants must submit ONE PDF dossier containing: • A motivation for wanting to participate in Realness (1 page) • A synopsis of the proposed feature project (1 page) • A narrative treatment of the proposed feature project (6 pages) • A draft of the screenplay (if available) • A writer’s note of intention (1 page) • A short biography (1 paragraph) • Two links to samples of previously produced work, uploaded to Vimeo. If selected, residents will be required to donate one copy of their previous work to the Nirox film library. The call is open to screenwriters from across the African continent and selection will be based on artistic merit. Realness will hold no legal claim over the work once

I
n a partnership between local, majority black-owned AAA Entertainment, Emmy Award-winning Hoplite has after three years of negotiations, decided to put down roots in South Africa. Hoplite Entertainment has successfully produced over 200 hours of original unscripted and factual content with some formats moving through Asia. AAA Entertainment, who has been predominantly active

Co-founders of AAA Entertainment Mayenzeke Baza and Pascal Schmitz, have a combined 23 years of producing experience in the region. “The strength we now have with combined investment, both locally
and abroad, will allow us to stimulate the local television industry while creating new exciting content from Africa designed for a global market place,” they said in a recent statement. “This new branch allows us to continue to not only grow, but find stories focusing on unique characters globally,” Jon Smith, CEO of Hoplite Los Angeles, said. The company will be bringing two to four
shows a year into the region, shooting both local and global versions of each show, with its first series coming into the country first quarter of 2017. Acting CCO Jonathan Perkins added, “A partnership in South Africa allows us to bring more great stories to life, as well as significantly reduce the input cost of some of these shows, through South Africa’s favourable exchange rate.”

GET #SELFIELESS THIS FESTIVE SEASON
Canon SA is calling on South Africans to turn their selfies away from themselves and instead, shifting the focus to animals as part of a social movement called #selfieless, which will see people across the world posting an image of a selfless act.
T
he worldwide movement kick-started in South Africa in November 2016 with a donation of R60 000 from Canon SA to the Animal Anti Cruelty League. The organisation has a long heritage of giving back through selfless acts of care and kindness to animals. “Canon SA has enthusiastically embraced Canon’s worldwide #selfieless movement. Locally

we’ve been supporting the Animal Anti Cruelty League since 2004 and have chosen the organisation as the recipient of our #selfieless campaign. They work tirelessly to rescue and care for neglected and abused animals and without the support from the community and caring corporates, the organisation would not survive. “Canon SA’s selfless act was to donate R60 000 to the
organisation which celebrates its 60th year of selfless acts in this country. We urge individuals and companies to join our #selfieless movement and help improve the quality of life for an animal this festive season,” says Dana Eitzen, Corporate & Marketing Communications Executive at Canon SA. In a world where people snap an average of 93 million selfies
a day, the #selfieless movement is all about encouraging the spirit of selflessness over the festive season, a time when everyone should make an effort to do something for the good of others. To get involved, choose an act of kindness towards our furry friends, take a photo, post it on social media using #selfieless and nominate friends to do the same.

HOOTEN AND THE LADY SHOT IN SA
Southern Africa continues to shine while servicing international film and television productions, with Hooten and the Lady shooting in Namibia and SA.
S
outhern Africa has brought another largescale television series to the region. Hooten and the Lady, a show that premiered on ITV Choice on 13 December 2016, was shot on location in Namibia, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town, which doubled as Egypt, Ethiopia, the Amazon jungle and the Caribbean. The series revolves around Hooten (Michael Landes), a rogue adventurer who travels to a different country in each episode in
search of lost treasure, along with ‘the Lady’, a British Museum curator (Ophelia Lovibond). The series has already filmed on location in Rome, Moscow and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, but according to Landes, the production was not allowed to film in Egypt or Ethiopia, so these two episodes were shot in Namibia. “As for the Amazon jungle in which Hooten and the Lady find themselves in episode one, that’s really South African jungle. We were in KwaZulu-Natal, about two hours away from Durban, where
we filmed for two and a half weeks and where our snake wranglers caught 42 snakes, including black mambas,” says Landes. The last episode of the series was also shot in SA, although this time it doubled as the Caribbean. Hooten and the Lady was a hit
with critics and audiences when it broadcast in the UK recently. Described as Indiana Jones meets Romancing the Stone by The Mirror, the show packs some serious punch with adrenaline-fuelled stunts, exotic locales and an abundance of thrills and spills.
AS FOR THE AMAZON JUNGLE, THAT’S REALLY SOUTH AFRICAN JUNGLE. WE WERE IN KWAZULU-NATAL.

S
outh Africa has not always had a strong presence on the world stage, but 2015 and 2016 were really good years for the country. Not only were South Africans in attendance – often with official delegations – at some of the world’s most prestigious events such as Cannes Film Festival, Cannes Lions, Annecy Animation Festival, the International Emmy Awards and more, but the country
continues to forge ahead with promoting and developing local content for the global industry. “Film festivals are important as they provide a platform to showcase new talent, and are a place to learn and network. Besides strengthening the industry and highlighting best practice, festivals also promote tourism and that value chain,” says Monica Rorvik, Head of Wesgro Film and Media Promotion.

Here’s a look at what we can expect in the coming twelve months from South Africa’s film hubs.
WESGRO SUPPORTS LOCAL AND GLOBAL
A number of international markets are on the cards for Wesgro Film and Media Promotion, the organisation promoting and supporting the Western Cape and Cape Town’s film capabilities. These include
Berlinale’s European Film Market, the Cannes Marche du Film, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and American Film Market and Conferences (AFM). “Berlinale will be hosting its first Africa Hub which will allow a presence for African filmmakers, locations promotion agencies to make more impact,” says Rorvik. “We are looking forward to collectively representing

South Africa’s offering with the other provinces and the national associations and regulatory bodies.” On the home front, Wesgro will be supporting the Cape Town International Animation Festival in March, Encounters Documentary Festival in June, Wavescape in November/ December and of course Durban FilmMart (DFM) and DISCOP Africa in Johannesburg. “Attending markets are incredibly important in fostering relationships and looking for opportunities,” Monica adds. “Our South African producers need to ensure that they map out and plan to attend international festivals and their markets that suit their strategy.” She cites MIPCOM, MIPTV and Cannes Lions as important for local producers working in the TV and commercial spaces. “Filmmakers should also attend the regional and local festivals as this will enable them to find and access a vast array of opportunities and networks.”
GFC PRIORITISES LOCAL CONTENT DEVELOPMENT
As the broadcast hub of South Africa, Gauteng remains a force in the industry, however the region will be focusing more on local growth than international promotion and development. The Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) will continue to support the Durban international Film Festival (DIFF) and DFM, as well as DISCOP Africa (Johannesburg) in 2017. “Because of our limited resources, these two were chosen for their international reach, although taking place locally. We support filmmakers at DIFF by sponsoring the Talent Campus, and at DISCOP we support 100 filmmakers to attend the market,” says Siyabonga Mngoma, a spokesperson for GFC. “With this support we believe that we benefit both emerging filmmakers who get exposure to international markets and established ones who continue to explore opportunities
APPRECIATION AND CONSUMPTION OF LOCAL FILMED CONTENT BY LOCAL AUDIENCES IS ALSO IMPORTANT FOR THE GROWTH OF THE SECTOR AS THIS LEADS TO THE GROWTH OF A MARKET FOR LOCAL CONTENT.
within such events.” GFC’s local content strategy for film and television includes content development, production, and distribution. “From a local television content and production perspective, DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) will provide an opportunity for investment in the development of local content. This is largely due to the fact that DTT will offer more channels thereby requiring more television content,” Siyabonga explains. “The GFC also intends to prioritise distribution of local content. Appreciation and consumption of local filmed content by local audiences is also important for the growth of the sector as this leads to the growth of a market for local content.” The organisation will encourage alternative distribution platforms to open opportunities for filmmakers in the region, and will also work on transformation in the sector.
KZNFC FOCUS ON TRANSFORMATION
The KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) will be shifting their focus in the coming year to developing local filmmakers through the KZN Film Industry Transformation Initiative, currently being finalised. This will grow a skills base in the province while producing high-quality, audience focused content for release into the market.
“We are confident that this programme will in the long term see a shift in the production capability of the province and our ability to attract and “service” production from both national and international companies,” says Carol Coetzee, CEO of KZNFC. The organisation will seek to address the issue of skills shortage by focusing attention on film graduates and providing opportunities for upskilling. As a result, they will and have been marketing the region to internationals in a proactive way: hosting delegations and forging partnerships. In 2014, a Nigerian delegation took part on a familiarisation tour that blossomed into exchange programmes between DIFF and the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos. In December, the province hosted an Indian
delegation. KZNFC has funded 81 projects to date, with 59 in development, 16 in production and six in distribution. In January 2017, KZNFC will be launching The Film Cluster within its office precinct – a 2 000m2 facility in central Durban offering access to education, equipment, networks, guidance, resources and opportunities within the film industry. “The Cluster will also contribute significantly to the transformation of the KwaZulu-Natal Film Industry and is the first initiative of its kind in the province,” says Carol.

SA’S
AWESOME ANIMATORS
South Africa’s animation industry has seen a healthy boom in the last twelve months, with international investments, coveted award-wins, and sector growth and development across the board. Kim Crowie speaks to key players in the long and short format fields.
A
n ever-growing and soon-to-be lucrative industry, animation in South Africa has consistently seen achievements and progress recently. Not only have key players like Triggerfish Animation Studios and Sunrise Productions made notable strides in engaging the local and international industry, but smaller animation houses and independent animators are also beginning to showcase their skills. Animation South Africa, the industry body promoting and growing the sector, has been very busy with development projects across the board – including the relaunch of Kunjanimation as the Cape Town International Animation Festival at the beginning of last year, the launch of a new podcast where they interview trailblazers, and of course, the hugely successful Animation Lounge and Turner Kids Pitching Competition held at DISCOP
Johannesburg in November. Animation SA has also appointed two new board members: Harry Ravelo, MD of Rabbit Disruptive Innovations, as Vice Chair and Kebakile Nage as Treasurer. Another big move from Animation SA is a formal proposal recommending the Department of Trade and Industry’s Incentive Development Administrative Division revise the current incentive scheme to make it more applicable, accessible and effectual for animation projects. “We intend to guide these changes before the new animation film incentive comes into effect in 2017,” says ASA Chair Nick Cloete.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN LONG FORM
Local animators have seen many achievements in 2016, with one of the biggest being a coveted Cristal Award at Annecy for Triggerfish and Magic Light Pictures’ Stick Man. “We’re
constantly trying to improve on our standards,” says Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest. “We’re very selective about the projects we embark on; we have to see the potential to reach our growing standard of excellence.” The show has also been nominated for a Children’s BAFTA. Triggerfish has found a nice market in children’s book adaptations. Roald Dahl’s
Revolting Rhymes was broadcast on BBC1 over the festive season, and they are currently working on Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler’s The Highway Rat, set to premiere on BBC1 in December 2017. They plan on going into production with Seal Team early this year. “In addition to the eight feature films we have in development, we have four TV series, which represent a new direction for Triggerfish.

Our goal is to get the first TV series in production by the fourth quarter of 2017,” Forrest explains. Sunrise Productions has seen some great achievements this year including two SAFTA nominations in March for hugely successful show Jungle Beat, which also screened at Toronto International Kids Film Festival in April. In October they announced a new global TV distribution partnership with the Aardman Rights and Brand Development division. Aardman will represent Sunrise’s new non-dialogue animated series Munki and Trunk – which recently premiered at MIPCOM Junior. Independent animator and whizz kid Mike Scott continues to flourish. part in Triggerfish’s Story Lab, made his Dogshow with Cat pilot with Disney and Triggerfish, and released some personal animated projects including a Bru & Boegie short – among many other things. “For 2017 I’ve blocked out the beginning of the year to focus on my own IP Bru & Boegie. It was originally optioned by Disney for Story Lab, but we didn’t see eye to eye on core aspects of the show so I have the rights back for that and have other plans for my underpanted duo.” Punch Monkey’s dynamic duo Andrew Phillips and Howard Fyvie took home first place at DISCOP Johannesburg’s Turner Kids Pitching Competition for Cloud Life, a zany 2D animated show with an evil corporation ruling over a futuristic digital wonderland, while Zeropoint Studios’ Hatch was runner up. Zeropoint’s hilarious gay
squirrel series, Squeers, was directed, designed and animated by Tincup. Tincup Owner Matt Torode says the show has been “prett y damn well received considering it features an S&M pigeon”. The company was also awarded €80 000 from the Europe Fund to develop their series Iggy and the Missing Links with Framestore, Adorable Media and Emmy Award-winning writer Jon Colton Barry. Animation SA Chair, Nick Cloete, who is CEO of Joburgbased Mind’s Eye Creative, has been pulling some premium 2D work from the US recently. The company is working on Stoopid Buddy’s Camp WWE and were recently sub-contracted to service the second season of original Netflix sitcom, F is for Family. Flying Circus has also been busy of late, with their flagship motion capture ‘kids soapie’ Silly
Seasons continuously attracting distribution deals. Breakthrough, a Canadian producer and distributor has snagged North American rights to the series.
ANIMATION SHORTS UPDATE
The shorts arena has also been busy of late. Tincup is hoping to start production on their short Waterloo and Trafalgar in France, while Mike Scott’s Bru & Boegie short was featured on CartoonBrew. But perhaps the biggest news comes from My Child TV. Teenage Mutant Azanians went digital with the launch of 26 webisodes on the My Child TV YouTube channel at DISCOP’s Digital Lab Africa. It is one of the very few – if the only – adult animation to come out of South Africa, with some incredibly talented, award-winning African comedians including Salvado, Nina Hastie
12 / FEATURE and Richlieu Beaunoir voicing characters on the show. Wilson, who is Executive Producer on the show, says that they aim to generate some real traction through the web series. “Once we’ve reached a critical mass we will then launch a crowd funding campaign with My Child branded augmented reality merchandise rewarded to donors,” he explains.
GAMING AND COMMERCIAL NEWS
On the gaming front, Sea Monster has seen significant achievements. The company was a finalist in the Apps Africa Awards for their Super Animals AR App. It was downloaded over 200 000 times within six weeks of launching. Their latest game, Bar Blitz, takes parties and mixology to another level, and they also had

fun working on the app for Pick n Pay’s Stickeez 2 campaign. Earlier in 2016, innovative gaming studio Free Lives moved to Mauritius temporarily. They were joined by some talented developers for the Game Jam of the decade. The result? A hilarious, NSFW game called Genital Jousting! In addition, their newest demo – as of yet untitled – is a gem of a frog-flattening game and is the brainchild of game developer Ruan Rothmann and animator Mike Scott . Tulips and Chimneys have been doing well in commercial service. In addition to directing and producing their own IP, they have expanded the studio’s capabilities to handle service work as well. “Some of our favourite projects for this year include the production design for

other studios’ original IP,” says Ree Treweek, Creative Director. “Naturally, we’re also still active in the commercial sector and have completed several animation and illustration projects for brands and agencies. The ad agency briefs we’ve recently received are starting to shift quite a lot and there is a much bigger focus on storytelling rather than hard sell. We’re also seeing brands being more active in the Below the Line sector and we’ve worked on a few experiential and digital

Africa’s animation scene is small at best, with hubs in East, West and Southern Africa – the latter being the most developed. That said, the rest of the continent is slowly seeing the importance of growing the sector, with Canadian company Toon Boom recently sponsoring the training of no fewer than 3 000 Nigerian filmmakers on animation. Institut Français will also be facilitating workshops in this field, while Nick Wilson, who coordinated the Animation Lounge at DISCOP Johannesburg, will be travelling to West Africa for the Abidjan show to forge partnerships with animators in the region.

industry role players is the demand for animators. Says Triggerfish’s Stuart Forrest: “Animation studios are finding that the skills shortage is hurting our ability to produce. The bigger animation studios are beginning to offer bursaries to develop new trainees.” One of these is Flying Circus, which has, together with The Animation School, announced a bursary programme specifically for black females. From 2017, the studio will offer four fulltime bursaries to 3D artists to complete their studies at the Johannesburg campus. “In South Africa, animation is still a very new and niche market,” says Andrew van der Merwe, Co-Owner of Flying Circus. “The skills shortage and lack of significant capacity remains our key concern for future growth of the animation industry.” “Government can’t shoulder the entire burden of addressing the skills shortage in animation.
We hope that other studios will follow Flying Circus’s lead,” Principal of The Animation School, Nuno Martins, adds. Animation SA’s inaugural outreach programme, Draw for Life, was a great success. Through it, eight youths from disadvantaged backgrounds were given the basics of drawing for animation – and took to it like ducks to water. Triggerfish, too, has jumped at developing local
and African animators, through Story Lab as well as Animate Africa, a non-profit initiative aimed at uncovering and nurturing artistic talent in Africa. Virtual reality and augmented reality have had a major impact on animators of late, with many not only experimenting in these fields, but also working on projects and ramping up for more in future. SOUTH AFRICA’S
SET DESIGN SPECIALISTS South African suppliers and prop houses are bringing local and international productions to life.
F
or a film, TV series or commercial to be believable, the scenery, props and furniture must be a true reflection of the time period in which the film is set, and must create the physical space in which the actors perform. Think of first film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The source material is a true set designer’s delight. The film would have failed if the sumptuous decor, delicate champagne flutes, over-the-top furnishings and glittering chandeliers didn’t bring to life the sheer excess described in the novel. The set design, in short, creates the mood and atmosphere of the production, and anchors the action within a specific time or place. Even a simple shot involving the interior of a house requires carpeting, bedding, cupboards, linen, furniture, curtain, etc. The list is extensive. Venture into the garden and the art department will require any number of plant varietals (real and arti ficial), ponds, statues, trees, fencing

etc. Venture further still, into a highly specialised shoot perhaps, and one might require antiques, artefact replicas, weaponry, even taxidermized beasts! South Africa is home to set designers, prop houses
and art department suppliers aplenty. Recent releases such as Shepherds and Butchers, Tess and Noem My Skollie are testament to the depth of skill and talent that reside here, and it is clear that international and local
productions are seeking their expertise in greater numbers. International TV series such as Black Sails, Saints and Strangers, Dark Tower, Tutankhamun, Tomb Raider and Roots all made use of our homegrown offerings.

MASTERS OF THE
MUSIC VIDEO
Kim Crowie speaks to three incredibly talented music video directors about their recent work.
M
any of today’s top directors in film, television and even commercials have cut their teeth on music videos. South Africa’s burgeoning creative economy continues to grow, and with a push for local content on the air, there is now more demand for music videos to accompany sonic masterpieces. Enter the music video director.
KYLE LEWIS
In the last twelve months, this talented man has att racted more attention than ever through his unique, sometimes dark, avantgarde visions. In November, five of Kyle’s creations were nominated for Best Music Video at the South African Hip Hop Awards, including Fuseg, War Ready and Mr Madumane. “Being nominated is always such an honour,” Kyle says, “especially doing something I love so much. But the true reward is working with incredible artists who create inspiring music and give me the opportunity to

express myself creatively.” His visual techniques and Afrocentric work have brought him opportunities in the commercial scene as a result. From VW and The Loeries, to Absolut Vodka and others, Kyle has pushed the boundaries of what an ad should and can be. “I have been so blessed with the type of work I’ve been offered. I’m always involved in some capacity in the conceptualizing of the job, which is amazing. Advertising has changed leaps and bounds in the last few years. There’s more and more collaboration with creatives on all levels.” Kyle has just finished a new short film for Nasty C ready for release, saying it is one of his “proudest achievements”.

the City), they formed a tightknit circle with Riordan producing and directing and Rory shooting. “Our first tester for the project was a takeaway show we shot with the boys from Grassy Spark,” says Rory. “After we completed it, we knew we were onto something awesome. Each shoot is completely different and has its own challenges that you have to deal with on the spot, so it has taught me to be pretty flexible and adaptive to my surroundings.” They’ve done twelve shows to date and each one differs from the other. “My top two shows to date are probably Manny Walters and our very first one with Bam Bam Brown. Manny is a great guy, who I feel should get a lot more attention than he does. I had gooseflesh pretty much throughout the entire recording. Bam Bam was our first official show after the tester with Grassy. It’s one that makes me smile because of how much fun it was.” Rory has also been shooting timelapse for six years – three of those professionally. One of the notable projects he’s worked on is a mini tour of South Africa for SA Tourism through The Video Cartel. He recently returned from Namibia shooting for a series, and will be releasing a travel film from a trip to Vietnam this year.

circles, he recently worked with Youngsta on Top Ten List. The visuals are a strong, graphic ode to Friday the 13th , and truly paint a vivid picture of the gritty hip hop scene we’re all familiar with. Batandwa says that he liked the song because of its realism, and he identifies with the underdog feeling that comes with being from Cape Town’s hip hop scene. Since he’s always wanted to work with Youngsta, Top Ten List was a no-brainer – and having Lady $kollie on body-bag duty was great, too. “I always like to hear what the artist wants and aim to use my visual skills to present them to the world in this way. Youngsta really loves the Friday The 13th film series and when we initially starting speaking, he said he just wanted to be like Jason, but in the rap game.” In order to create a really iconic music video, one has to get to know the song and capture the energy the artist created with the music, he explains. “If the song is the soul, then the music video is the physical body… When I work with people, or when I work on anything, I’m always thinking about the energy. Feeling the energy. If the energy between me and another creative is magnetic, then I work with them. It’s not really a science. I just think the world in all its mystery has a way of guiding you.”

www.thecallsheet.co.za
A UNITED KINGDOM “Let us not allow the ugliness of this world to take our joy away from us.”
S
eretse Khama’s story combines two of my favourite things: love and politics. A United Kingdom navigates the beautiful, tragic and uplift ing tale of forbidden love with such nuance and subtle humour that it’s almost too good to be true…almost. As someone who understands what it’s like not having family support your choice of spouse, I could grasp – only just – the insurmountable odds Ruth Williams and King Khama faced. Not only did they have to win their families over as well as his nation,
they also had to painstakingly persuade the British Empire that their love truly could stand any test. To say I was inspired is an understatement. I was enthralled, enveloped, I cried, laughed, and felt uncertainty in her glance, his single tear. A United Kingdom tells the true tale of Seretse Khama, the 26-year-old King of Botswana, and Ruth Williams, a 24-year-old London office worker. It takes place in 1947 against a post-war, pre-apartheid backdrop and stars David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Terry Pheto, Tom Felton, Laura

Carmichael, Jack Davenport, Vusi Kunene, Charlotte Hope, Jessica Oyelowo, Jack Lowden, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Arnold Oceng and Merveille Lukeba. Africa’s increasing ability to give such compelling stories to the world brings some muchneeded encouragement to young people of colour who need role models they can identify with. And it’s as enriching seeing them come to life in such a vivid, visual telling. The film showcases Botswana’s beautiful veld setting wonderfully, and it goes without saying that the South African cast and crew who worked on this production have once again positioned the country as a coveted location for international shoots and world-class expertise. Although David Oyelowo was as dashing as ever with an impeccable, moving delivery; and Rosamund Pike as demure, poised and approachable as could be; it was Terry Pheto who stood out as Naledi Khama, Seretse’s sister. She carried herself with dignity befi tting a royal, and despite having a supporting role
with minimal dialogue, her stoic silence and loyal character said more than any words could. Director Amma Asante, too, has brought history and romance together with such authenticity and tenderness. “I knew that this was a role of a lifetime and also to work with Amma Asante who I absolutely adore; with Rosamund and David was a dream come true,” Terry told me at the Cape Town premiere of the film. “In the past two years I’ve spoken about all three of them but I never thought I would work with all three in one film!” In short, A United Kingdom offered up genuine, incredible performances and a love story that ranks up there with the best of them – Atonement and The Notebook included. – Words by Kim Crowie. A United Kingdom was released in South Africa, and in East and West Africa on 9 December 2016 by Videovision Entertainment through United International Pictures.

EXPERT STUDIO SPACES South Africa’s studio sector continues to grow, with a number of new developments and spaces popping up across the country. Kim Crowie looks at movements in the sector, and finds out what we can expect in the coming twelve months.

tudios in South Africa have seen tremendous growth in 2016, with a number of venues opening to offer more film shoot space, and still others growing and expanding to accommodate the demand for studios. One of the biggest developments in the sector is the emergence of new studio players in Gauteng, according to Sasani Studios’ Managing Director Eileen Sandrock. “This is giving Sasani some healthy competition, and keeping us on our toes. We have studios available for the industry, and so we are thrilled to have attracted a few smaller productions to Sasani; new clients, which is always an absolute pleasure to see.” Another movement in the industry is the integration of different media formats. Tamsyn Nichol of The Bello Studio, a niche space in Cape Town located within The Old Biscuit Mill, says they’ve seen this trend particularly in stills and commercials where many teams are shooting TVCs as well as stills in the same period. “This is great for production and also a unique way for the local crews from the photographic arena and the film division to start to work alongside each other.” Q-Studios, who host highprofile soap opera High Rollers, have had an excellent year, with all three studios and office space booked by Rous House Productions until February
2018. The show’s final fate is yet to be decided, thanks to SABC pulling it in November and then reinstating it until further notice due to public outcry. “Unfortunately, due to everlasting politics, and a badly run broadcaster, the future of this well-received ‘Daily’ is a bit insecure at the moment,” says Ilse Sprenger of Q-Studios. “But justice might still be allowed to prevail and High Rollers can be enjoyed by South African viewers for a long time to come.” The Global Access Studios have seen an eventful year, and hosted the likes of All Access Mzanzi, My Perfect Family, Top Ses La, Thandeka’s Diary, Inside the Baobab Tree and various corporate live broadcasts. “Our highlights were hosting Clash of Choirs and our other productions as well as shooting our company’s #MannequinChallenge in 360 degrees in studio,” says Carla Harris, Marketing and Sales Coordinator at Global Access. “We also definitely saw an increase in demand for studios with up and coming crew showing new and innovative ways of using the traditional space…We don’t want to say too much but let’s just say we’re working on the first VR 360 studio space.”
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
A number of new studios have opened their doors in 2016; the most notable of these being

Studio Joburg. The venue, also known as the Johannesburg Expo Centre, offers a flexible, worldclass facility with 50 000m2 of indoor multi-purpose space, 100 000m2 of versatile outdoor space, over 20 000 parking bays, a helicopter landing base, and is a convenient 30 minutes away from all major airports in the region. They have already facilitated a number of commercial shoots as well as films and series like District 9, Rockville, and Undercover. “The team behind Studio Joburg are passionate about content creation, especially scripted television series and feature films. We are also convinced that South Africa, and Johannesburg in particular, has all the necessary ingredients to make it a destination for content production that is the equal of anywhere in the world…To this end, we have come together to develop studio facilities at a tremendous location to the South West of Johannesburg. These facilities are ready for use immediately, but will be further enhanced in whatever way required, as driven by our clients’ demands.” A new studio in the making is the Garden Route Film Studio, which offers a onestop production facility that its owners are hoping will become the new film hub in the area. Located in George it offers modern facilities at a reduced cost, with a wide range of fresh locations in close geographical
proximity – ideal for international and local commercials, films and television series. Overberg Film Studios is another space that’s just been launched by Imagenheart Films. Located in Kleinmond, the facility has a custom-built stage that can be arranged to accommodate endless video production requirements, and is also ideal for screenings and events. “It’s an exciting venture for us, at a very exciting time for the local film industry,” says Desmond Denton, CEO and Writer/Director at Imagenheart. “It’s great to see large productions come to South Africa, they put people to work and put money in the economy. We want to support them and facilitate their productions, but the local industry and independent film community is even more important to us and with this we have started the Overberg Film Studios.” Relatively new Fleet Street Studios, hosted by Quizzical Pictures, was initially acquired as a series of warehouses in Randburg, Johannesburg in early 2014. The facilities are now fully operational and include two 300m2 shooting studios with good acoustics for anything from music videos and commercials to television dramas and feature films. The venue also holds post-production suiters for edit and final mix, production offices, dry hire space and more. of high-profile production companies pass through its doors. These include Film Afrika, Homebrew Films, Moonlighting, Out of Africa and Gambit Films, whose recent soapie Suidooster celebrated its 100 th episode on kykNET in July. Atlantic Film Studio complex consists of over 32 000m2 of which 11 000m2 is under roof. Atlantic Studios offer The Epic Studio with 3 500m2 of space, as well as The Kitchen (483m2), three 500m2 sound stages, a backlot area with 450 parking bays, and controlled tanks for underwater filming – among many other advantages, equipment, and spaces for hire.
UPGRADED STUDIO SPACES
On the international front, Cape Town Film Studios, who played host to large-scale productions like Black Sails, Saints and Strangers and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, has recently expanded. The studio completed an additional workshop and sound stage in early 2016, which
was immediately grabbed for the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower featuring Matt hew McConaughey and Idris Elba. According to a recent article in The Globe and Mail, CTFS is fully booked through next year, and potentially until 2020. Clive Morris Productions, a well-established production company with accompanying studio facilities, has also made some adjustments to their space. In addition to its 81m2 sound studio and 12 edit suites all run on Mac-based Final Cut Pro and Adobe systems, they also have three HD Panasonic cameras with full tracks, a control room overlooking the studio, and a number of auxiliary options including solid state recording, make-up area, storage facilities, full air conditioning, generator backup and full lighting grid on dimmers. Sasani Studios have also been growing in leaps and bounds on the broadcast scale. Not only did they welcome The Voice Afrique
Francophone and The Voice Nigeria in their new studio space in 2016, but in October they commenced working on season two of The Voice South Africa after a very successful first season. “We would like to develop one last studio complex on site at Sasani,” says Managing Director Eileen Sandrock, “but will assess the market over the next few months before we enter into any definite planning in this direction.” Sasani has a number of studio spaces available for film and broadcast use, including a 600m2 studio with support infrastructure. Cape Island Studios has added to its fold of studios, bringing its studio space to a total of 2 332m2. Broken into five studios ranging from 278m2 to 800m2, they accommodate most commercial shoots, and have had the likes of Gatehouse, Juice Film and AFS Productions through their doors in 2016. “We can look after a production’s changing needs and address these as they happen whilst the
jobs are shooting in Cape Island Studios, offering our customers a turnkey solution which is both cost efficient and time efficient.” says Michele St Arnaud, Operations Director at Panalux and Panavision, which also has new and improved premises.

The Bello Studio is a 100m 2 blank canvas located in the Design District of Cape Town at The Old Biscuit Mill. The studio is a popular space for designers, stylists and photographers who use it as a space for shooting stills, hosting pop-up shops, launching new collections and events — given its location in the hub of the Neighbourgoods Market every weekend. The studio also works well as a casting studio and client production office as it is surrounded by restaurants and local creatives at work, or as an event space to host film screenings or private functions. Annually, the studio team hosts photographic exhibitions by local photographers, and encourages the promotion of local work.

GHANA Nestled between four countries in West Africa, Ghana has much potential as a film location, and has an ever-growing film and television industry to prove it.
A
country that is sometimes overshadowed by its Nollywood neighbour, Ghana has a steadily growing film industry that, although small, has already accommodated heavyweight productions. The region boasts incredible colonial castles, as well as waterfalls, lakes, surf beaches and the unique Nzulezu Stilt Village. Ghana offers rainforest, savannah and African wildlife viewing opportunities for filmmakers thanks to several parks including the Mole Game
Reserve, Kakum Nature Reserve, Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary, Bui National Park, Bia National Park and Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. It is also known for its many cocoa plantations. Ghana’s capital and largest city is Accra, which features an architecturally interesting National Theatre, and a restaurant curiosity – The Green Plane, located inside the shell of an old DC-10.
FILMS SHOT IN THE COUNTRY Ghana’s filmic history is rather young, although the country
does have a steadily growing local industry known as Gollywood which employs an estimated 8 000 people in one area of the country. Renowned local director Kwaw Ansah is known for his 1980 film Love Brewed in an African Pot, while Werner Herzog’s 1987 film Cobra Verde was filmed on location in Brazil, Colombia and Ghana. A more recent international production to shoot on location in Accra is sports film Ali in which Will Smith plays renowned boxer Muhammad Ali.
In 2016, a Ghana/USA coproduction won the Durban International Film Festival Audience Choice Award for Best Film. Nakom tells the story of a Ghanaian medical student who returns to his family homestead to bury his father, only to discover family tensions between his mother and his father’s ‘junior’ wife. A dramatic portrayal of the conflict between the modern and traditional, Nakom has been described as a window into a culture and language

ACCESS Kotoka International Airport is Ghana’s main connection to the rest of the world. Located in Accra, it services regional and international carriers, while several other airports offer connections to the rest of the country. Airlines flying into Ghana include: rarely shown on screen. Perhaps the country’s biggest accolade in the 21st century was hosting director Cary Joji Fukunaga’s award-winning Beasts of No Nation. The film stars Idris Elba and Abraham Attah and is based on a novel about a brutal West African civil war and the child soldiers they claimed. Ghana-born Abraham Attah, who was 14 at the time, broke into Hollywood stardom with the film’s release and will be joining the cast of The
Modern Ocean and Spiderman: Homecoming in 2017.
FILMING ON LOCATION
All visiting crew members need to have press accreditation and security clearances to film anywhere in Ghana. This usually takes 2-3 days to process, and permission to film at specific locations depends on the scope and nature of the shoot. Shutting down roads and more complex requests typically require at least a week to organise.
THE REGION BOASTS INCREDIBLE COLONIAL CASTLES, AS WELL AS WATERFALLS, LAKES, SURF BEACHES AND THE UNIQUE NZULEZU STILT VILLAGE.

NFVF AND CNC PLAN CO-PRODUCTION WORKSHOP The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the National Centre for Cinema (CNC) of France, in conjunction with the French Embassy in SA, are organising a two-day coproduction workshop between the two countries, set to be held in Paris on 27 March 2017. The workshop is part of an ongoing collaboration between the two institutions to strengthen their bond in film, and to encourage co-productions within the framework of the treaty between the two nations. This is the second workshop of its kind to be hosted by the NFVF and CNC, with the first one held in Durban in 2012. The event aims to create a platform for SA filmmakers and producers with developed feature film projects to meet with their fellow French producers, and find potential partners with view to coproduce their projects. For more information on the workshop, visit www.nfvf.co.za.
SOS COALITION CONDEMN THREATS TO SABC 8 The SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition has called on the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to treat death threats against the SABC 8 as a “priority crime”. “Over the last few months we have witnessed several threats and attacks both verbal and physical against our journalists being carried out by law enforcement agents, university management, private security as well as students and other citizens. We have previously condemned such actions as they too clearly undermine our democracy and the right of media to do their job and exercise the rights to freedom of expression,” they said in a recent statement. WGSA HOSTS MICHAEL J DOUGHERTY
LAST ‘IPO PRESENTS’ SESSION FOR 2016
AMASA FORUM SET FOR 3 FEBRUARY
The Commercial Producers Association of South Africa (CPA) has been working with renowned accountants Gailbraith Rushby to formulate a VAT Guide to Zero-Rating for the film industry. The organisation has made the document available to their members through their website. To read more about the guide and what it entails, please visit www.cpasa.co.za.
Before closing the year with a picnic in the park, the Writers’ Guild of South Africa (WGSA) brought Michael J Dougherty to Cape Town to present From Continent to Continent, a talk on the need for diverse writers and writing diversity into a script. He is currently based in Los Angeles, and while in Cape Town, spent 26 November unpacking the subject for WGSA members and students at the SAE Institute. Dougherty is a member of the Writer’s Guild of America’s Writers with Disabilities Committee, and is also the writer/director of Look Around, a PSA produced by the WDC meant to encourage disability inclusion in the media.
The Independent Producers Organisation hosted their final IPO Presents session for 2016 at Atlas Studios in Milpark. The event saw Chairperson Akin Otomoso chatting with Bertrand Moullier of the International Federation of Film Producers’ Association. There was also a subsequent discussion with the Department of Trade and Industry about the Copyright Amendment Bill and the Performers Protection Amendment Bill. The event took place on 23 November. To stay informed about upcoming IPO Presents sessions in the new year, visit www.ipo.org.za.
The Advertising Media Association of South Africa (AMASA) will be hosting their next #AMASAForum on Wednesday, 3 February 2017 in Sandton. Often, as agencies work together for a brand’s success the lines blur and it becomes difficult to identify who is in charge of leading the campaign, which then raises the question: Who owns the idea? A panel consisting of Johnathan Deeb (FCB), Zwelakhe Tshabangu (Dashboard Africa), and Sheila McGillivray (One Lady and a Tribe) will discuss the subject, facilitated by IIthateng Mokgoro of TEDx. More information can be found on www.amasa.org.za.

“We were privileged to be the first company to shoot in the new Cape Island Studios stages. It is a fantastic BIG space, we managed to fit 2 large sets in very comfortably. Lots of thought has gone into putting the space together and it has all the practical aspects that one needs in a great studio. Can’t wait for another studio shoot so we can go back again!”
