3 Things You Need To Know About...SETE 2012

On 12 September, the Sports & Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) kicked off its second annual gathering in Durban, South Africa with a star-studded banquet honoring Olympic athletes and featuring celebrity performers. But attendees soon got down to business, planning for 2012 and beyond. With sports tourism one of the fastest growing areas of the global travel and tourism industry ($182 billion worldwide value in 2011) SETE has quickly established itself as an important event on the South African tourism industry calendar. Sugen Pillay, Thebe Conference Director to SETE, says the event is a way to build on the connectivity and energy created by hosting the World Cup. “This event is really an attempt at bringing that togetherness again,” says Pillay, “to bring the industry to start working together.” Organizers reported signifi-

cant growth in attendees at SETE this year, with international buyers doubling from 25 in 2011 to 50 this year. But Carol Weaving, Managing Director of Thebe Exhibitions & Projects, is aiming for an even better turnout in the future. “Our delegates at the conference we’ve probably gone up by about 30 percent,” says Weaving, “...our exhibitors is about a 10 percent increase, so I think your exhibitors and your local corporates is something we’re are going to work quite aggressively on for next year.” But in the meantime, there were important takeaways from SETE 2012. T

he Incentive Travel & Conventions Meetings Association (IT&CMA) & Corporate Travel World (CTW) Asia takes place 2-4 October in Bankok, Thailand, bringing together meetings, incentives, confencing, and exhibitons (MICE) industry buyers and suppliers who are focused on Asia.

2012 is an anniversary year for both the IT&CMA and the CTW. This year marks the 20th anniversiary for IT&CMA and the 15th for CTW Asia-Pacific. Their combined event, IT&CMA & CTW, is the leading international MICE show centered in Asia, offering the largest collection of Asia-Pacific MICE suppliers. IT&CMA brings together MICE suppliers and regional and international buyers for a 3-day exhibition showcase coupled with intensive business ap-

pointments. Exhibition features include destinations, products, services and solutions relating to meetings, incentives, conventions and events. Last year’s gathering was the largest in the event’s history, featuring 16,500 business appointments between a record 335 exhibiting companies and 491 MICE buyers and corporate travel managers. According to the IT&CMA, in 2011 50% of all buyers were new participants in the event and more than 90% of exhibitors reported that they expected to receive orders ranging from US$250,000 to over US$500,000 in the within a year of the event. Event organizers expect an even better result this year, as

IT&CMA & CTW will incorporate a luxury travel component in the show for the first time. This strategic move to expand the event to include luxury travel is intended to give buyers and corporate travel managers the opportunity to simultaneously source for products and services to meet the demands of their up-market clientele. Likewise, exhibitors with luxury offerings will be able to capitalize on the enhanced showcase and buying potential at the event. rom 15 to 17 September, members of the International Conference of the Society of Incentive and Travel Executives (Site) gathered in Beijing to discuss the development of the international incentive traveling market and China’s growing impact on the industry. We spoke with David Sand, the new Site Global President and CEO of UWin IWin to find out what members of the incentive travel industry need to know about Site now.

Q: What do members of the incentive travel industry need to know about the Site conference in Beijing? A: The Site Conference Beijing was a huge success, showcasing the strength of the global nature of the Site membership with attendees from 42 countries. Site represents professionals whose major focus is on the “I” in the acronym MICE – the incentive component. The conference provided a buyer supplier platform that connected China inbound and outbound incentive travel needs with those of global play-

ers. It educated the non-Chinese delegates on doing business in China and introduced many delegates to key players and thought leaders in this rapidly growing mega market. It was great to see five South African organisations attend the Site Conference and also to see the great role that South Africa Tourism is playing in creating a big awareness for our destination in the China marketplace and facilitating relationship building. HE International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) represents the main

specialists in organising, transporting and accommodating international meetings and events. It comprises over 900 member companies and organisations in 87 countries worldwide. ICCA recently demonstrated its committment to Africa by launching an office on the continent on 1 September. An office in the Middle East was opened the same day. “We anticipate that both of the regions have tremendous potential for growth,” says Martin Sirk, ICCA’s CEO, “not just purely in membership but in the international meetings potential.” Members already have resources at their fingertips that can change how they do business. The ICCA Associ-

ation Database connects users around the globe. “We want all ICCA members to use the database on a regular basis, not just those in Africa, and local support will help explain more easily the many different ways the database can be used: for preparing for trade shows and promotional roadshows, for filtering the best prospective events to bid for, to connect with other ICCA members to exchange inside information, and to customise communication with prospective clients, to give a few examples,” says Sirk. Chris Prieto, Regional Director covering the African Region, says, “as the Regional Director for Africa my role is primarily to help ICCA members in Africa to get the most out of ICCA’s tools, events and

data. Great part of my time is going to be spent getting to know individual business objectives and priorities, so that I can help match these up with support that is available.” Rashid Toefy, Chief Executive Officer, CTICC and ICCA African Chapter Chairperson explains, “as an emerging economy it is critical that Africa punches above its weight. The ICCA database is a powerful tool to attract international association conferences to the African continent...Being a member of ICCA can play a key role in increasing the number of intra African meetings that rotate on the continent.”

INDUSTRY LEADERS UPDATE

Joey Pather

A

fter nine years with the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Joey Pather has left his post as Chief Operating Officer to become Managing Director for the Cape-FEDIC’s Tsebo Outsourcing Group. Pather joined the CTICC in 2003 as the Catering Manager, quickly advancing to become Chief Operating Officer in 2010. Says Pather, “in 2010, Dirk Elzinga’s tenure as Managing Director of the centre ended. I was promoted to COO and undertook and oversaw all operational aspects of the business. I played a key role in aiding in the smooth transition from RAI to a truly South African operating entity.” During his tenure at the CTICC, Pather saw events grow through their pioneering

stages to maturity and the attraction of worldwide events to Cape Town. These include: The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Mining Indaba, Design Indaba, World Diabetes, 19th World Diabetes Congress, 19th FIGO World Congress of Gynecology & Obstetrics, 5th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis Treatment & Prevention, Cape Town 2010: 3rd Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization, International Astronautically Congress 2011 and the World Economic Forum. Pather says highlights of his tenure at the CTICC also include being part of a dynamic company constantly evolving to keep up with trends and technology, innovatively insourcing services, “thus promoting skills training and monetary saving,” and being part of the innovation campaign launched this year, which calls for “’reuse, reduce & recycle/cost saving and create environmental awareness.’” Pather says rather than naming a successor, the CTICC will be restructuring roles, “the CEO will be taking on some of my work while my other responsibilities will be divided between the

Executive Management team and a few key staff members. I have been privileged to have been asked to arrange the re-structure of the organisation before I left and I am confident that I have left a good respectable team behind and I have imparted all the knowledge which I have acquired.”

early three years after joining the Sandton Convention Centre, Karin White has moved to Sun International. Karin White, former GM of Sales and Marketing for the Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) has moved to Sun International where she has taken up the position of General Manager, Events, Meetings and Exhibitions.

White joined the SCC in October of 2009. She reflects, “revenues were at their all-time high and as a business unit we had achieved excellent results year on year. We were also nominated as an ICCA marketing awards finalist in 2010 which saw us presenting to a 1000 strong conference attended by our industry colleagues worldwide. Over and above this, our international strategy laid out in 2010 paid off with immense return. We secured more mega events than the centre has seen before.” Now White has new goals in her sites. “To reposition Sun City as the most desirable conferencing and events destination in South Africa. As the resort already has world class facilities my role is to ensure that we align to best business practice both nationally and internationally and to deliver a one stop service offering to all of our clients.” White joined Sun International on 10 September. No successor has yet been named at Sandton Convention Centre.

A

lan de Beer, Creative Director of Scan Display, has been in the stand design business long enough to remember when technology meant a TV set placed on a stand. But times have changed. Now de Beers is using “thin, wallmounted plasmas,” “iPads,” and LED lighting, like much of the rest of the industry. Customers expect the incorporation of the latest trends into their stand designs. Average graphics can look amazing when properly lit, good graphics become wow graphics!” Jaques Jacobs, Head

of Design at 3D Design, says that although the objective remains the same -- keeping up with client expectations such as good design, good service, and good finish, the industry is changing due to outside factors. Jacobs says, “the energy crisis, greening, pollution, technology and new materials,” impact his work. “I draw inspiration from my surroundings, watching people and everything and anything that I feel will inspire me, which helps create new and innovative ideas,” Jacobs adds. The global economic downturn has also impacted the

industry, notes Murray Strauss, Head of Design at SSQ Exhibitions. “The industry has been hampered by various factors from the recession affecting marketing budgets to the slow pace of adapability from market players...There has been a noticable decline in fact, in terms of size, budgets, and forward thinking of exhibitions, primarily due to recession,” Strauss notes. We asked stand building industry pros to tell us what’s in, out, new, affordable, and next for stand design in Africa. Here are some of the most informative answers.

How are stand designs different now than they were ten years ago? When I started in the industry we put TV sets on the stands. Now we have thin, wall- mounted plasmas or iPads set-up in docking stations. This is one example of how changing technology has aided us in designing better, slicker stands. Other areas that have evolved include lighting and finishes, giving us tools that create a very professional look. A second difference is the gravitation away from ‘busy’ stands covered with logos and graphics, and towards uncluttered and ‘clean’ stands, with fewer but bigger and bolder graphics. Less is definitely more at the moment. Thirdly, there is a growing awareness around sustainability. This has pushed design in the direction of thinking long term and re-usability,

What is popular now in terms of colour, lighting, etc.?

Green and green design is the colour that most companies want to incorporate into their stands. Except for that, colour is very much determined by the clients brand and the goal the client wants to achieve at that specific exhibition. Lighting is a key aspect in exhibition design, from LED’s to neon lights and even colour changing lights, these lights seem to appeal and draw attention from people walking by to the stand, making lighting together with colour extremely important when designing an exhibition stand forming an extension of our clients corporate identity. --Jaques Jacobs, Head of Design, 3D Design

Is there any difference in stand design here on the African continent versus Europe or other markets? We are generally a few steps behind Europe for many reasons when it comes to stand design. Budget and product availability being one of the main reasons for the differences, however the resourcefulness of our market has shown us replicating cost efficient alternatives and ideas to what is being done in Europe, with some stand out, uniquely African finishes and designs coming through. -- Murray Strauss, Head of Design, SSQ Exhibitions

What features will stands have in ten years that they don’t have now? What coming innovation are you excited about? I believe the use of holograms and interactive screens will push stands even further than anyone thinks is possible. 3D projections seem to be gathering momentum and this could lead to a dramatic shift in what is possible on a stand.

Lighting and sound will continue to bring a real world experience to the visitor and at their current growth who knows what we’ll see in ten years. There will always be a need for ordered, modular exhibition space for new, small, or constrained exhibitors who just require a space or presence for their product or identity. Exhibition stands and event infrastructure supplier ConCept G opened their doors two years ago and have grown into a tried and trusted industry brand.

I

n the two years since its inception, ConCept G has planted its feet firmly in the events industry turf, becoming a member of numerous associations including EXSA, The Event Greening Forum and IFES. At present, owner Andrew Gibbs is Vice Chairperson and Treasurer of EXSA. “ConCept G has grown from strength to strength since inception. From a small company we have evolved into a medium sized entity, having been awarded some prestigious projects over this period that have further enhanced our experience and placed us on the map,” explains managing partner Gill Gibbs. “We are in the process of acquiring an established custom exhibition company in Cape Town, which has led to the expansion of our facility in Johannesburg and an increase in our staff complement. Andrew has extensive shell system and exhibition experience, having

worked at Oasys Innovations for five years. His wife and business partner, Gill, has been a key account manager for both Oasys Innovations and International Fairs & Exhibitions. Andrew and Gill see themselves as brand and image ambassadors to the exhibition and event industries, with a collective 26 years of experience and expertise, building on, and adding value, to the reputation of their clients. The results speak for themselves. “In our first year of opening, we were appointed to project manage the SA Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai, China, an eight month activation that comprised the actual bricks and mortar stage of the Pavilion building to the realisation of the interior finishes, displays, event, AV and content development,” says Gill. “In our second year of opening, we were awarded the IEC Gauteng Operations Results Centre at SABC, Auckland Park. In 2011, we were appointed by the preferred Agency to realise the Siemens Africa Sustainable Cities Road Show which was launched at Turbine Hall in JHB, then moved to

Cape Town and then culminated in KZN with COP 17. We have also provided custom solutions for Siemens and TCTA at WISA in Cape Town, appointed by their preferred agencies.” The company has also provided project management services to the rAge Expo over the past two years, with 2012 being the third opportunity. ConCept G has realised various system and custom (bespoke) design stands for rAge, some of which are Kalahari.com; NAG/The Verge; EA Games; Microsoft Xbox; NGL and FoxComp. It’s been a busy year. In May, the company was appointed to provide and finish the infrastructure, services and project management of AVI Africa, as well as various design stands for a poultry exhibition at Emperor’s Palace. ConCept G also provided a number of stands and pavilions at Saitex and Africa’s Big 7, as well as the media centre and hosted buyer’s lounge at Meetings Africa, Africa’s biggest business tourism lekgotla. Another personal highlight for Gill was being chosen as the preferred agency to man-

he last few weeks have been manic at the 3D Group, specialist exhibition stand builders and exhibition infrastructure suppliers. In total, we have built over 2 000 sq m of custom designed exhibition stands, of which 500 sq m were double storey stands, at three different venues in nine days.

Thirty of the 38 stands were built at Electra Mining Africa and the other eight were built at the Johannesburg National Boat Show at the CocaCola Dome and at the African Property Investment Summit at Sandton Sun Hotel. In total, we had 136 people on-site and eight project managers, all in the capable hands of Ivor Allison,

Production Director at the 3D Group. “This is the most work we have done at any one time, and I must complement my incredible team that I work with. Without their dedication and commitment we would never have been able to pull this off,” says Allison. “We have had an exception-

ally busy time. I am happy to report that with our customer satisfaction reports completed, we have happy clients all round. This is not easy to achieve when there is so much pressure on our system...however, it goes to show that with a great team nothing is impossible,” says Conrad Kullmann, Group Sales and Marketing Director.

STAND DESIGN - GENERATING RESULTS

It is often said that the only limitation we have is the boundary of our own creativity. This can most definitely be applied to the industry of developing design stands. Whether creating custom or system stands, the challenge is always to push the boundary just a little bit further.

I

f you looked back about ten years, you would see ‘design’ stands that include vinyl prints, some creative use of furniture and possibly a different colour carpet or floor. Nowadays, technological and inspired evolution in this sector has led to modern designs that are distinguished by the use of a variety of materials, unique lighting, different floors and levels and the incorporation of technology, all of which have become key fundamental elements. Robert Walker, Business Development Manager at Complete Exhibitions explains, “It is firstly critical to understand the client’s main goal for the stand and then design around that. Often it would be a product display, a networking opportunity or brand launch. Each objective will result in a different approach to the design to ensure that it is met. Together with this are the common parameters, such as floor space

and budget, which also need to be considered.” Typically, design stands have been utilised when working on large projects that offer expansive floor space. Complete Exhibitions recently conceptualised and built two large design projects which were uniquely different and posed different challenges. At the Sasol TechnoX, they were tasked with recreating a mine environment which needed to represent both hot and cold elements. Each of the divisions had a unique set of requirements that needed to tie-in within the overall theme. The next large project was the relaunch of the AFGRI brand at the recent Spring Show. While always adhering to strict corporate guidelines, this project required 12 distinctive design stands, each one representing a division of the organisation while presenting a unique look and feel. In all, there were 13 design stands and a fully functioning Farm City

and Town & Country Shop. Design stands, however, should not be limited to large projects only. A recent execution illustrating this was at the Insurance Institute conference and exhibition. The space provided was a very generic 3 x 3 meters. The brief was to construct an eye-catching environment through creative use of space. One of Complete Exhibitions approaches to creating differentiated design stands is the use of curves and bends in the place of straight beams and right angles. Walker explains, “Curves create a far more visually appealing stand. When used correctly this allows for the flow of a design to be greatly enhanced. Softer lines generate more interest and, when incorporated with appropriate graphic prints, can create a focal point on any stand.” Incorporating this approach, Complete Exhibitions developed a stand that exceeded the client’s expectations. As an exhibitor moving into

the world of design stands for the first time, they were delighted with the appearance and the effect that it had on the visitors’ approach. The reality of today’s economic climate means that the emphasis is on the design team and suppliers to come up with cost effective, reusable and sustainable solutions while delivering creative and pioneering stands that deliver on both function and form.
