he successful hosting of huge conference and business events in recent years is testament to the African continent’s ability to outperform all expectations and pre-conceived notions. This is a place that declares itself as the future of business events. South Africa is considered the role-model for the continent regarding growing the business events sector. Having successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the United Nations COP17 Climate Change Conference and the International Conference on Mother and Child Health Handbook, South Africa is poised to remain at the forefront. This year, Cape Town as the World Design Capital will roll out countless innovative design programmes, initiatives and showcases. The country remains in the top-15 long-haul business-events destinations globally, and is edging up on the competition with every fantastic event held. Cape Town was recently rated Top Destination for 2014 by The New York Times and The Guardian, and gradually lesser-known provinces such as the Northern Cape and Limpopo are gaining well-deserved recognition for their outstanding natural beauty, tourism attractions, and large pool of skilled, hospitable people. By 2030, the continent will be home to 25% of all the world’s populations. South Africa is the gateway to that immense and largely untapped market. It simply makes sense to bring your business here. Africa is many things, but her beauty, world-class infrastructure, abundant first-rate hotels, enviable affordability and inherent charm combine to produce an events destination that proudly proclaims “we are rising”. So rise with us, and experience the very best that this world has to offer.

AFRICA Now is the Right Time

verywhere you look, the signs are clear. Now is the right time to hold an event in Africa. The African continent is at the forefront of global growth. According to the International Monetary Fund, seven of the world’s fastest-growing economies are African. The continent also boasts the world’s fastest-growing population and the fastest-growing middle class. Consumer spending in Africa is expected to skyrocket from $680 billion in 2008 to $2.2 trillion by 2030. That makes the African continent a business event hot-spot. A new report from UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, shows more and more business events are coming to Africa. Despite a difficult global
business climate, the exhibition industry in Africa is growing and there is a “clear sense that the future of the exhibition industry in the region is promising,” says an UFI report. Ibrahim Alkhaldi, UFI MEA Regional Manager, says, “Compared to the first edition of this UFI research completed in 2006, we note an increase of 33% in exhibition space and 15% more trade fairs on the entire African continent.” South Africa is the continent’s business events powerhouse. South Africa has hosted some of the world’s most important global events and meetings, including COP 17 and the fifth BRICS Summit. In 2016 South Africa will host (for the second time) the 21st International AIDS Conference. It offers
world-class business and conference facilities, excellent leisure tourism attractions and hospitable, welcoming, and skilled people. As a result, South Africa has secured 88 major bids for the period 2013 until 2017. Jointly, these bids will attract no less than R2.6 billion to the tourism economy. These meetings will bring an estimated 200 000 delegates to the country. Attendees of business events on the continent can expect top-notch service in unforgettable settings. In Africa, visitors can stay in the world’s best luxury lodge or apartment hotel – winners of World Travel Awards in 2013. Trip Advisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards 2013 named four hotels among the best hotels by country in South

Economic Boom As The Economist magazine wrote in 2013, “There is no shortage of economic growth in Africa.” The African continent is home to some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with an expanding, thriving middle-class that is attracting the attention of corporations and organisations world-wide. South Africa and Nigeria are the continent’s powerhouses, but they are by no means alone in economic heft. Meanwhile, global economic growth is expected to increase over the next two years, particularly in Africa. The international interest in doing business in Africa makes the continent the ideal location for a business event.
Track Record of Success A 2013 report from UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, says that despite a difficult business climate, the exhibition industry in Africa is growing with a “clear sense that the future of
the exhibition industry in the region is promising.” In 2013 the continent was buzzing with high-profile industry events. The International Federation of Exhibition and Event Suppliers (IFES) hosted the IFES World Summit 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. This was the first IFES conference to be held in Africa. Bruno Meissner, the President of IFES, enthused, “This was the best IFES event I have attended! We will all keep great memories from Cape Town in our hearts.” Also in 2013, the members of the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC), the industry association for professional convention and exhibition centre managers worldwide, gathered in Cape Town, South Africa, in June for its Annual Conference and General Assembly. AIPC wanted members to experience “a destination in major transition from a closely controlled past to a still-uncertain future and where economic progress is a major factor in addressing social issues.”
Africa – 2014 Hot Spot In 2013, African suppliers were in-demand among global buyers at EIBTM (the global meetings and incentive exhibition in Barcelona, Spain) and at CIBTM (China’s leading meetings, incentives and business travel exhibition). This is part of a wider trend – Africa is a business events hot spot in 2014. Graeme Barnett, Reed Travel Exhibitions, EIBTM Senior Event Director, says there hes been a surge in interest in Africa because the continent has one of the highest growth rates in the world. “We believe that it is Africa’s business potential, and the large increase in the number of corporate and business travellers placing outbound business into Africa that has stimulated the growth in the meetings industry on the continent.” Africa will be in the spotlight with the launch of the new Africa Travel Week, includes the World Travel Market which Africa, IBTM Africa, and International Luxury Travel Market Africa.

Rise With Us. The Time Is Now. land of abundant wealth yet with the most striking of socioeconomic divides, South Africa is a magnificent place filled with possibilities. Its history and heritage is steeped in colonialism, racism and civil unrest but the nation has managed to rise from the ashes to create a booming economy with an impressive infrastructure that cannot be ignored.
South Africa is one of only 12 countries where tap water is safe to drink. It is the world’s biggest producer and exporter of mohair. Its mines run deeper that any country in the world – up to 2.5 miles at points. Afrikaans is officially the youngest language in the world and South Africa is the world’s largest producer of gold, platinum, chromium, vanadium, manganese and alumino-silicates. It produces nearly 40% of

with South Africa offering a number of incentives to encourage growth. One such initiative is the film rebate scheme, which has brought large-scale productions like ‘Safe House’ (2012), ‘Blood Diamond’ (2006), ‘Dredd’ (2012), ‘Black Sails’ (20122013) and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2014) to the country. The nation also has one of the largest growing middle classes on the continent and the government is in the process of providing proper sources of income and amenities in informal settlements. One such project is the 110% Green Initiative which, together with the Western Cape Government, promotes sustainable housing solutions for a growing housing backlog. as the National Tourism Sector Strategy which aims to provide “excellent people development and decent work within the tourism sector”. The country’s economy has naturally evolved with all these social changes – as has the events and meetings industries. In recent years, South Africa has become widely known for accommodating international conferences, mega-concerts, and design, food and other expos on a regular basis. In 2012, Debora Patta, then presenter for ‘Third
Degree’, said that the 2010 FIFA World Cup was “an example of a nation that despite all odds, often delivers an astounding product”. Cape Town, also referred to as the Mother City, was nominated as the World Design Capital 2014. Throughout the coming year, the city will host hundreds of programmes that identify, nurture and promote projects that improve lives through design. Cape Town was also ranked as one of the top 10 cities to visit from 2006 to 2009, with the New York Times putting it at number one for 2014.

South Africa hosted 106 international association meetings in 2012 and has a goal of hosting 130 events each year by 2020.

The nation continues to enjoy a steady influx of international tourists on the back of the FIFA World Cup. In 2013, arrivals grew by 5.1% during the first six months – over 4.6 million tourists. In the first two quarters of 2013, tourism injected R35.3 billion into the economy, which is more than gold exports contributed during that same period. The Department of Tourism most recently announced the opening of an office in Lagos, Nigeria, signalling the importance of the West and East African markets. “For us to compete as a destination in the current economic environment where many travellers in our traditional core markets are choosing to travel for shorter periods of time and closer to home, we need to work harder than ever to be seen as a destination that offers brilliant value for money. Working with our private sector partners, we are focused on nurturing this value proposition,” SA Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk said in an official statement. He went on to voice his enthusiasm at the new Lagos offices, saying that the Department remained confident of growth in tourism from Africa. “We look forward to being part of the larger Nigerian travel community. Having a marketing home in this critical West African region will do much to bolster the relationships we have with both trade and consumers in the region, and
unlock the full potential of tourism.” Most recently, Cape Town announced exponential growth in its tourism industry, with the V&A Waterfront being the “biggest draw-card for local and international visitors”, according to the Cape Argus Business Report. There are also signs of a revival in the city’s construction, with an almost 48% year-on-year rise in the value of building plans completed between July and September 2013. Wesgro has also announced that it is attracting new investors, with the company facilitating three major investments to the value of R219.4 million during the quarter under review. “The city’s large spend on new infrastructure, refurbishment and maintenance of existing infrastructure has created the platform for a growing economy,” said Garreth Bloor, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning. A sizeable portion was invested in the media and advertising sector, creating around 2,000 jobs. In the same way that Cape Town has

benefitted from investments, across the country internationals are investing in South Africa’s many resources. The Marriott International, the largest hotel chain in the US, recently acquired a R2.02 billion stake in the nation’s Protea Hospitality Holdings. Dubai-based investment bank Arqaam Capital has become the newest equity member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), indicating the confidence of other emerging markets in South Africa as a financial gateway to sub-Saharan Africa. In January 2014, Petrochemicals giant Sasol inaugurated a new, R1.9-billion ethylene purification unit in Sasolburg in the Free State province. And in December, a German company landed its biggest ever solar contract – thanks to South Africa’s renewable energy programme. It represents an investment of over R1.2 billion, on the back of South Africa’s approval of R33 billion in investments in renewable energy projects. The South African business events Industry has also seen some developments in the last year. Durban hosted the 123rd International Olympic Committee Session

Joburg hosted the Africa Rail, Port and Harbour Show, the 59th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference and the International Franchise Expo. The development of large, state-ofthe-art convention centres in all of South Africa’s major cities has helped create an environment that grows events industries. Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) is host to annual events like the Design Indaba, the Mining Indaba and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, which

saw over 34,000 visitors in 2013. It has two large auditoriums, multiple meeting rooms and flexible exhibition, trade show and film shoot venues with 11,200 square metres of column-free space. Parking and amenities such as ATMs, a restaurant, a prayer room, a business centre, and a coffee shop can be found within the facility. The CTICC also plans to upgrade its complex in the near future. In 2013, it added a record high of R2.9 billion to the SA economy and over R1 billion to the Western Cape’s coffers. The Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg is the nation’s leading and most prestigious, multipurpose exhibition and convention complex. Situated in
the heart of Joburg’s business, hotel and entertainment district, the Sandton Convention Centre offers easy access to over 5,000 hotel rooms and provides nearly 11,000 secure parking bays. These numbers pale in comparison with the complex, which covers over 22,000 square metres of floor space. This excludes the Pavilion, the Ballroom and 13 other meeting rooms which can accommodate up to 8,000 guests combined. It is often host to the African edition of international conferences. Durban International Convention Centre is a focal point of Durban’s business district. It is centrally located and just half an hour from the airport. Durban ICC is one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world, and the best-performing convention centre in the country. In 2013, it produced a revenue of R157 million with profits of R45 million before tax. Durban ICC also has a world-famous catering service headed by Executive Chef John Moatshe, who was awarded the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Brass Plaque/Blazon for maintaining “a superb level of cuisine, hospitality and service”. Looking at the massive investment in conference infrastructure, one can see how committed the country is to growing the sector. And, over the last few years, it has paid off. South Africa hosted 106 international association meetings in 2012 and has a goal of hosting 130 events each year by 2020. 88 international meetings have already been booked between 2013 and 2017, generating an estimated R2.6 billion over a period of five years. As South Africa embraces 20 years of freedom in 2014, the country celebrates. We celebrate not only the impact that former president Nelson Mandela has had on the nation, but the fact that South Africa has grown and built so much in such a short space of time. It has truly become an example for, and the gateway to the rest of the continent.

The Province of Gold onsidered the commercial heart of South Africa, Gauteng’s energy and vibe are tangible from the moment you arrive. From historical and cultural attractions that speak of the country’s turbulent past, to world-class cities that are distinctly African, Gauteng has plenty to offer travellers attending business events. The province is the site of coal and diamond extraction operations, but it is best known for its gold deposits. With only 1.4% of South Africa’s land area, the tiny province of Gauteng punches far above its weight-class, contributing more than 33% to the national economy
and 10% to the GDP of the entire African continent. Politically, the three metropolitan municipalities – the cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane (Greater Pretoria) and Ekurhuleni (East Rand) – have come together to build a globally competitive city-region. Gauteng also boasts a rich history, with a heritage steeped in the origins and evolution of humankind, mining and politics. Visitors to Gauteng can enjoy exploring heritage spots, absorbing arts and culture, trawling the markets and malls for interesting memorabilia or simply soaking up the sunshine in the great African outdoors.

rom the mighty pyramids of Giza to the majestic Nile River winding through Saharan dunes towards the warm Mediterranean coast, Egypt is an explorer’s paradise. It is home to some of the world’s most renowned diving locations and holds a wealth of history within its borders. In years prior to the Arab Spring, it was ideal for European holiday makers – as one of the most exotic vacation spots close to home. These days, the country struggles to bring tourists in. Reuters announced in mid-January that Egypt’s tourism revenue sank by 41% in 2013 compared with a year earlier. The sector naturally took a massive hit in 2011 when President Hosni Mubarak was toppled by a popular uprising. It was further damaged in 2013 when, after mass protests, hundreds were killed in the army’s violent overthrow of elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

SOUTH AFRICA Paves the Way for Large Conferences in Africa
G
rowth is the key word for Africa, as both the economic outlook and the population of most African countries continue to climb. Which are two very good reasons why conference organisers should move beyond their comfort zones and invest in some African adventures. Actually, staging a conference in Africa is nowhere near as risky as some foreigners may feel. Despite headline-grabbing images of poverty and war, the truth is far less exciting and far more attractive. Many African nations have built high-quality infrastructures, stable economies and a cadre of extremely professional event organisers to ensure visitors enjoy a truly amazing and well run experience. Chief among the countries geared up to host large conferences are South Africa, Mauritius, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and Egypt, with South Africa winning the bulk of the business. “South Africa remains a very attractive conference destination, not only because of its sophisticated infrastructure, but also because of the incredible diversity in terms of location and tourist offerings,” says
Zelda Coetzee, National Chairperson of the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI). “The country has a solid reputation for hosting seamless international conferences and events and therefore continues to attract them.” That is confirmed by figures from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which places South Africa 37th in the world in attracting international association conferences. “This year the whole of the South African business events industry stands to benefit from Cape Town‘s status as World Design Capital, as the city and the country will continuously be in the international spotlight,” Zelda adds. Local conferences continue to be the backbone of the industry, however, with hundreds of small and medium sized venues across the country. Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, executive manager of South Africa’s National Convention Bureau, recently reported that South Africa hosted 106 international association meetings in 2012 and has a goal of hosting 130 association events a year by 2020. “We set a target for growth
at 5.6% but we’re now at 12%. The good news is that we have world-class meetings infrastructures and an industry that’s working like a well-oiled machine.” Already 88 international meetings have been booked between 2013 and 2017, generating an estimated economic impact of R2.6 billion over five years. So it’s no surprise that Africa’s conference venues are making fresh investments to increase their capacity and hone their services, to create a self-fulfilling circle of bookings, impressed delegates and more bookings. Yet the enormous potential remains largely untapped. Africa’s investment in infrastructure is inadequate to benefit meaningfully from the pent-up demand, says David Scowsill, CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). “Outside of the Nairobi and Johannesburg hubs, Africa doesn’t really have the infrastructure to support the growth that is coming their way,” he says. With the WTTC forecasting annual growth of 3% for travel and tourism to $6.8-trillion, African governments and eventing professionals have plenty to aim for.

AFRICA S
Needs to Hone its Exhibitions Industry taging a successful exhibition takes a great deal of organisation. A crucial part is finding a suitable venue, which is becoming noticeably easier in South Africa and further north as massive infrastructure investments help Africa to create a more professional exhibition landscape. Another key factor is attracting the right audience, and Africa’s growing middle class is creating a core of aspirational consumers. It is also creating a qualified professional audience for more focused trade shows aimed at niche industries. South Africa alone has more than 1,000 conference and exhibition venues, ranging from bush hideaways to hi-tech convention centres, with enticing after-hours attractions like wildlife safaris. A skim through the calendar shows how many international as well as local exhibitions these venues have successfully bid for in 2014, with everything from wedding and baby expos, ever-popular food and drink shows, tourism, a slew of information technology shows and industry specific events such as the Africa Ports and Harbours show. “Africa is emerging rapidly as a destination of choice when it comes to hosting meetings, with many global associations looking to include Africa in their rotation patterns,” says Shinu Pillai of Reed Travel Exhibitions.
Despite the global slump, South Africa’s exhibitions industry remains resilient, agrees Mati Nyazema, executive director of Sandton Convention Centre. But Africa needs to hone its offerings to become a serious platform for international events, she warns. That demands a long-term view, since competing for international business demands heavy up-front investment in infrastructure, plus hard work, persistence and networking. “Our industry has not matured enough to realise what it takes to play on the international stage effectively,” Mati says. “South Africa still needs to up its game. In the rest of Africa some destinations are on board, like Tanzania and Kenya, but generally the rest of Africa is still lagging behind. You have to invest for several years before you see any returns.” Some people still argue that exhibitions are a waste of time and money. That may be true if the exhibitors outnumber the visitors because you have misjudged the market or chose a venue that people won’t visit. But done properly, exhibitions are a valuable way of reaching new customers, finding more products and making vital business contacts. EXSA, the Exhibition and Event Association of Southern Africa, believes exhibitions should be a key factor in the marketing strategy of all businesses. They can reach thousands of buyers simultaneously, making them a perfect platform to launch

a new product, showcase an established brand, meet new contacts and analyse your competitors. “Exhibitions coupled with a strong PR campaign and good literature can bring in more direct business than any other marketing channel,” EXSA says. David Dodgeon from DMC Green Route, who will attend IBTM Africa in Cape Town in April, says Africa is a perfect destination for several reasons, offering a huge contrast in terms of culture and history and being well situated for flight routes and global access.

INCENTIVE TRAVEL Africa Steps Up Its Game
I
f you want to reward your staff, your customers or your business partners, there’s no better way of showing your appreciation than by spoiling them with a holiday. A week in hip and happening Cape Town, time on the beach in Zanzibar, or perhaps a Kruger or Serengeti safari. It’s a far more memorable reward than money, and despite the economic slump, incentive travel is still a key component of the travel trade. The great news for Africa is that we have sights and experiences that jaded European, American and Asia travellers won’t find anywhere else. All we have to do is market those offerings effectively. Obviously that’s not easy in an industry where everybody is trying to woo incentive travel organisers, but Africa has plenty going for it. Firstly is the novelty of the experience, since the majority of the world’s travelling classes still haven’t even set foot on this massive continent. But they have to trust that the experience will go well, and that means travel organisers, venues, logistics services
and the attractions themselves must deliver. Travelers will expect things to be different and more exotic in Africa, but they won’t forgive incompetence or discomfort. Fortunately the standards in many African countries are on the rise, with top class hotel chains operating alongside boutique hotels and lodges that offer an exquisite personal touch. At the 2013 IMEX America conference, Jenn Lim, the CEO of Delivering Happiness, said the big trends in our working lives are ‘work/ life balance’ and ‘workplace spirituality’. A growing number of organisations recognise that employee loyalty and motivation hinges on a convergence of personal values with corporate ones, and that a happy worker is a productive worker. Jenn expects more organisations to embrace happiness as a means to growth in 2014, which could fuel more incentive travel to keep employees sweet. At the Site Global Conference in Orlando in 2013 more than 400 incentive travel professionals from 40 countries celebrated “the world of motivational experiences.”
David Sand, the first African to serve as its global president, believes it is crucial to highlight Africa as an incentive destination, and not only South Africa, which already gets the bulk of the attention. Other countries are belatedly realising the value of this market, and boosting their tourism facilities and hospitality standards to win a share. Locally, the South African chapter of SITE has launched a new training scheme for youngsters keen to enter the industry, which includes work experience at incentive companies, transport companies, adventure companies and hotels. Such efforts are crucial, because although our natural attractions are enticing, the services and hospitality the travellers receive are what will clinch the deal. It’s also worth noting the rise of China as a major force in the MICE market, with China becoming a top buyer for many MICE industry suppliers. That’s a good indication of where your marketing money could be channeled this year.
