CONSCIOUS CONFERENCING

The historic Spier Hotel & Wine Farm in Stellenbosch is constantly striving to find innovative ways for its business to have a positive social and environmental impact – and this very much embodies its approach to events, which it calls Conscious Conferencing.

B

y hosting your event at Spier, you’ll be helping to uplift communities, support local businesses, contribute to staff wellness and benefit our environment – all the while treating your delegates to a great experience. Just 40 minutes from Cape Town, and 20 minutes from the airport, Spier offers 12 different meeting venues that can host large and small conferences, as well as business meetings, workshops, seminars and exhibitions. The venues include a 430-seater auditorium, three meeting rooms in the 1822 historic Manor House (which has an oakshaded courtyard adjacent to it) as well all as three river- and mountain-facing conference rooms which can be used separately or combined to seat 250 delegates. In addition to Spier’s Eight restaurant (which can be booked for private use), there are a variety of picnic spots and outdoor spaces for cocktails or dining. Comfortable, country-style accommodation is available for delegates in the four-star, 153-room Spier Hotel (which also has a boardroom for meetings).

On the plate Spier serves wholesome and delicious food, fresh from the farm, that pairs perfectly with its award-winning wines. Underscoring this is the belief that the natural flavour of food should speak for itself, so expect a conferencing menu that is seasonal, uncomplicated and creative. Beef and pork come from grass-fed animals reared on Spier’s pastures, along with delicious eggs laid by happy hens that scratch around freely in the fields. The animals are reared without the use of antibiotics or hormones. As a participant South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI), Spier also promotes sustainable seafood choices.

Conferencing at the Manor House Courtyard

Ever greener While Spier has long offered sustainablyminded conferencing solutions, it is setting the bar even higher following a R1-million refurbishment of its facilities. The upgrade includes the installation of temperature-regulating glass sliding doors at the centre’s entrance and soundproof double doors for its Tamboers Lounge, as well as water-saving motion-sensor taps and waterless urinals – adding to the farm’s already 400 water-saving devices. Spier also recycles more than 97% of solid waste and 100% organic waste and black and grey water (the treated water irrigates the garden and grounds). Delegates are kept refreshed with filtered tap water and the Water From Air™ machines harness the atmosphere’s humidity – served in recyclable glass bottles. Pens and notepads are made from 100% recycled paper, with leftover stationery going to deserving schoolchildren in nearby communities. As part of Spier’s commitment to a self-sufficient and sustainable future, a solar power system was installed in August

2017 on the Spier Conference Centre roof. The system generates electricity from the sun and offsets approximately 40% of the Conference Centre’s annual power usage.

Get involved In partnership with Pack for Purpose, Spier has selected three social development projects which guests can make a contribution to. If you have spare space in your luggage, you could make a huge difference by packing in a donation of stationery, games, sports gear and soccer balls.

CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT

‘COULD GROW SA BUSINESS TOURISM TENFOLD’

SA has massive business tourism potential, says Craig Newman, CEO of AAXO sponsor Johannesburg Expo Centre

The public sector could help create this conducive environment by drawing on industry knowledge and expertise. Craig Newman, CEO of the Johannesburg Expo Centre

S

outh Africa, and the entire SADC region, stands to gain from an influx of business tourism – assuming a conducive environment is created. This is according to Craig Newman, CEO of the Johannesburg Expo Centre and incoming president of the international exhibition body UFI. Announcing the Johannesburg Expo Centre’s silver sponsorship of the Association of African Exhibition Organisers (AAXO) in Johannesburg, Newman said industry bodies such as AAXO played a crucial role in bringing the exhibition industry together, and giving it a voice. “Our sponsorship of AAXO supports efforts to drive business tourism to Southern Africa,” Newman said. “By working together through a credible industry association, all industry stakeholders are better positioned to raise awareness and engage with

AAXO Chairperson Carol Weaving

the public sector on initiatives to grow business tourism to the region.” Business tourism presents significant economic growth opportunities, he said. “Commodities have a limited lifespan, and there is a growing realisation that both business and leisure tourism present new opportunities.” Business tourism alone could grow ten-fold in the SADC region, contributing to economic growth and job creation, Newman said. However, to capitalise on the potential, the region has to overcome issues such as visa challenges and international perceptions around safety and security in the region. Newman believes that industry stakeholders, working closely with the public sector, can change perceptions, overcome the challenges and create an environment conducive to a thriving business tourism industry. “The public sector could help create

this conducive environment by drawing on industry knowledge and expertise, as well as by working with South Africa’s neighbours to present the entire Southern African region as a compelling international destination with a market of up to 300 million people,” he said. Echoing these sentiments, AAXO Chairperson Carol Weaving welcomed the Johannesburg Expo Centre’s sponsorship and closer engagement with AAXO. “We are very excited about the enhanced collaboration and support of the Johannesburg Expo Centre and its CEO. We believe that partnerships such as this one stand to benefit AAXO, our associated members, and the exhibition and business tourism ecosystem as a whole,” she said. For more information on AAXO, visit www.aaxo.co.za or contact Llewellyn du Plessis on 011 549 8300 or at llewellyn@aaxo.co.za.

UMHLATHUZE Consider the City of uMhlathuze as the playground for your event.

W

e welcome the opportunity to make good memories with you, and fulfil your expectations through our offerings. This Sizzling City has much at your disposal to make your event a success and to give you the experience you have been longing for. The City of uMhlathuze is situated on the beautiful northern coast of KwaZulu-Natal in the heart of Zululand. You can fly in direct from O R Tambo International Airport, or our road, rail and water infrastructure gives easy access to our city. We boast high-standard facilities and venues including hotel establishments that will put you at ease when you stage your event. From sports facilities to hidden gems, water sport equipment to fishing spots and many other inland facilities and venues, you will be spoilt for choice. We are blessed with a wonderful climate. Our summers are sizzling hot and our winters are mild (some might say ‘warm’ in comparison with other regions). Our sea temperatures, too, seldom require the use of wetsuits, while our endless stretches of coastline, beaches, bay and inland waters mean we have almost yearround access to the most wonderful water sports and leisure events. But we have much more to offer than sun, surf, flat water areas and a landscape that lends itself to adventure tourism. Being in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom, we have an abundance of locations of historic and cultural importance in our brag book. We pride ourselves on being home to the Thula Thula Game Reserve, where you can view Elephants and many other special wildlife species. Royal heritage excursions, visits to

significant struggle sites and a package that includes our ever-growing township tours, have grabbed the imagination of passengers from visiting cruise liners. And, far from being a hindrance to tourism, our massive industries are in themselves attractions as ‘industrial tourism’ lures students to see some of the biggest operations of their kind in the world. Besides being a clean city (we strongly promote clean air initiatives and stringent environmental policies), we are also ensuring that we run a clean government and now enjoy a fifth consecutive Clean Audit. Welcome to the fast-growing City of uMhlathuze, we are eagerly waiting to make your event an unforgettable experience.

12 VOICES SHARE ONE IMPORTANT MESSAGE

New communications campaign set to showcase the Power of People.

I

n recognition of the Global Meetings Industry Day, the BestCities Global Alliance announced an exciting new communications strategy that will showcase the Power of People. Led by the Greater Bogotá Convention Bureau, who will host the BestCities 2018 Global Forum in December 9-12, the bureau has developed a campaign that aims to celebrate the unique role people play in making significant changes and progressions in the meetings and events industry. Together alongside the 11 other BestCities destinations, Bogotá will be showcasing the core theme of this year’s Global Forum in a drip-feed digital strategy that will make touch points across the globe. This will be the first time the Alliance has communicated the theme from their annual event out to a wider audience via a targeted strategy that will see all cities share a cohesive message. The movement will give real understanding and meaning to the power people have within an industry that have the ability to make change. Over the past two years, the BestCities Global Forum

has looked at the impact of legacy and the importance of building cultural bridges. This year, the Alliance wants to ensure the people are at the core of everything. Phase one of the campaign will see all 12 of the BestCities partner cities, which includes Berlin, Tokyo, Vancouver, Madrid, Houston, Singapore, Melbourne, Dubai, Bogotá, Copenhagen, Edinburgh and Cape Town, share impactful images that illustrate what the Power of People means to them. Linda Garzón Rocha of Greater Bogotá Convention Bureau said: “We strongly believe that each person has the power to make a fundamental difference that can shape the future and make a positive change. People are the essence of this industry, and this industry is a vessel to achieve wider and bigger impacts. As an Alliance we want to highlight the true power of the people within it and believe this campaign will help us achieve this.” Paul Vallee, Managing Director of BestCities Global Alliance said: “We always do our utmost to ensure the theme of our Global Forum focuses

on a significant topic so we’re excited to have this year’s event focus on the Power of People. The message we want to communicate is that people live at the heart of this industry and through this campaign we hope to shine a spotlight on the many inspiring individuals who are working to better the industry, events and legacies we’re creating. The Power of People is a broad theme with multiple meanings and we’re thrilled to have a strategy in place to share our view on what this means to 12 of the best cities across the globe. Phase one of the campaign ran from 12 April until 14 May with phase two to be announced shortly. The BestCities team and partner cities attended this year’s IMEX Frankfurt. Further information on what is to be expected from this year’s Global Forum taking place in Bogotá in December will be unveiled at a media breakfast on Tuesday 15th May at Maritim Hotel Frankfurt, located next to the Messe Frankfurt. THE SHOW MUST GO ON, BUT WHAT IF IT REALLY CAN’T?

Whether a music festival or a business conference, cancelling an event can be costly.

E

vents are regularly cancelled for all manner of reasons – a key artist is sick or injured, a piece of machinery breaks down or the weather refuses to play ball. There are, of course, also tragic reasons for event cancellation, such as an act of terrorism or a musician who dies on the eve of a major global tour, as happened with Michael Jackson. Beyond the human impact of such an event, the financial repercussions of these cancellations can be tremendous and result in payouts to customers and suppliers running into millions of Rands. Today, most organisers of large events take out insurance so that, wherever possible, the show can go on. Event cancellation policies come under the umbrella of contingency insurance and primarily encompass cancellation, abandonment, postponement, rescheduling or interruption of an event for a reason beyond the control of the organiser or the promoter. According to Francis Hernandez, Entertainment Manager for Overseas General Insurance at Chubb, almost everything imaginable is insurable, including unpredictable factors such as the weather.

Weather adversary “Each claim is considered on its own merit as there is certainly nothing more unpredictable than adverse weather at an outdoor event. Some insurance policies attempt to define what bad weather constitutes in terms of wind speed or the amount of rainfall experienced as examples, but you have to look at how the weather event plays out to make that call. As a rule of thumb, event cancellation insurance will respond favourably when the organisers or local authorities deem it too dangerous for

the event to continue, such as a hail or lightning storm during an international cricket match,” says Hernandez. “Events that are currently being cancelled due to the drought in the Western Cape region however

whereby we reimburse the organiser for lost revenue because people can’t attend.” If an event needs to be relocated in anticipation of adverse situations, event cancellation insurance will typically cover the expenses incurred

would not be considered to be an insurable event as the drought is not sudden, nor unforeseen. A decision to cancel an event due to the drought conditions would generally form part of a planned process that can be done in advance to minimise the risk and the cost of cancellation,” says Gena Jalink, Mid-Market Practice Manager for Chubb Insurance SA. Adverse weather is one of the most longstanding and frequent risks event organisers face, but one of the more recent and most devastating risks is terrorism. “In the aftermath of the suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK, last year, the American singer cancelled a portion of her world tour, including concerts in London, Belgium, Poland and Germany. Event cancellation insurance not only responds to an actual act of terrorism, but also where there is a credible threat. Whilst the event and initial attack took place in the UK, it affected events in other European countries,” says Hernandez.

in moving the event to another venue, as it will generally cost significantly less than an outright cancellation of the event,” Hernandez adds.

Event liability cover According to Jalink, it’s important to understand that there is a difference between event liability insurance and event cancellation insurance - they do not cover the same risks and are usually separate policies but can be provided as a packaged offering. “It’s essential to have event liability insurance in place and ensure that their event plan complies with stipulations set out in the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (the “SASREA”), which firmly places the responsibility on all parties involved to ensure event safety. The distinction between who is responsible for what is sometimes blurred and all parties should have their own event liability insurance cover in place, whether a sponsor, supplier, contractor, event owner, advertiser or events coordinator,” explains Jalink.

Political risk “If conference goers are prevented from accessing the building due to political demonstrations, the integrity of the event is compromised both from an attendance and exhibition point of view,” explains Jalink. “Even though the event most likely won’t be cancelled, the event organisers may need to refund entrance fees as well as exhibitor fees. This is known as an ‘enforced reduced attendance claim’,

Today, most organisers of large events take out insurance so that, wherever possible, the show can go on.

hen you visit Africa’s Travel Indaba, you touch base with most of the continent. Through all of your senses you will experience the richness of the African continent. What you’ll remember most when you leave, however, are the stories you hear and how these serve to connect people to business. South African Tourism

celebrates this with this year’s theme: “Africa’s stories, your success.” Sisa Ntshona, CEO of South African Tourism, owners of Africa’s Travel Indaba, says, “The modern traveller is looking for a travel experience that is distinctive and authentic, and travel in Africa offers exactly that: an unforgettable experience that leaves you with stories to tell. It is these real, incredible African stories that

inspire our continent’s world-class tourism products and drive their business forward.” “The world is increasingly looking to Africa as a vibrant continent where they can shape lasting travel memories. These are the stories we want to amplify at our continent’s premier tourism trade show in 2018. We want the African tourism economy to help write the story of Africa’s prosperity. We want the world

For those putting a trip together for clients or themselves, they can contact the listed products directly, or they can contact Wild Zambezi which will put them in touch with an expert travel planning consultant. Sally says Zimbabwe is big news this year: “The changed political scene has

made everyone curious to rediscover this wonderful country. And the good news is that it’s just as beautiful as ever! Are they willing to venture further afield and explore Lake Kariba on a luxury cruiseboat, catch tigerfish and enjoy the best sunsets in the region? Would they sleep in a tent under the Winter Thorn trees and walk with the elephants in Mana Pools? Did you know that the stretch of the Zambezi River that passes through Zimbabwe has the largest, contiguous section of protected ‘wilderness’ in Africa (if not the world)? Wow! That’s really something special! We want the whole world to know,” she enthuses. The Wild Zambezi stand at Indaba 2018 is DEC2B19, in the DEC Hall right opposite the Zimbabwe Tourism Stand. They are planning to give the international and regional travel trade a tantalising taste of the varied travel products available in the Zambezi’s wild areas, with something for everyone, including: • Wild Zambezi – Online information resource for travel to the Zambezi River’s iconic wild areas, searchable listings, travel reviews and independent, on-the-ground travel advice • Birdlife Zimbabwe – Travel portfolio of professionally-guided, specialist tours for birding enthusiasts to

ADVENTURES

AROUND EVERY CORNER Southern Africa has a wealth of experiences to offer the adventure traveller, and some may be found in unexpected places.

From meetings to motorcycles Craig Marshall, owner of the DSA-Group, is a firm believer in the existence of the “wanderlust gene” (DRD4-7R), also known as the adventure or thrill-seeker gene, believed to be carried by around 20% of the population (read more about this controversial theory at www.cntraveler. com/story/the-science-of-wanderlust). The DSA-Group taps into this genetic variant within its clientele with its four motorcycle rental companies, specialising in adventure travel, guided and GPSguided motorcycle and 4x4 routes in southern Africa. Based in Cape Town, Craig has personally guided more than 100 motorcycle tours during the past ten and planned well over 350 self-guided motorcycle and 4x4 tours covering 400 000km around Southern Africa. “The yearning to traverse Africa on a bike is still strong. We start in Cape Town and loop into most SADC countries. The best motorcycle routes and adventures are in the southern parts of Africa – South Africa and Namibia specifically. Once you head further north via Botswana, Zimbabwe and beyond, it’s predominately asphalt, and riders are generally restricted by the prohibition of motorcycles in national parks and private game reserves. Further north to Kenya, security is an issue and it’s advisable to travel in escorted groups and in some parts even military convoys,” Craig says. His clientele is mostly between 45 to 60 years old, high-powered businessmen, almost all international, Northern Hemisphere riders escaping their cold winters. They are keen for a sense of freedom on a motorcycle, where they can dress in the latest gear, take a proper break from the confines

of their offices and work responsibilities, get dusty and feel young again. Many own motorcycles back home and are keen to ride new routes in different countries, during the off-season at home. Craig says he carefully matches

route and motorcycle or 4x4 to client, including their preferences for tar and/ or gravel roads, some of which are deeply embedded in our history such as the numerous old ox wagon trails cut by the settlers as far back as the

1800s which remain in the mountains of the Western Cape. “There is a formula to making a successful motorcycle trip, and it starts with a clientele needs analysis and screening the client – seasonal considerations; makeup and interests of the group; length of trip; and prior experience,” he notes. While motorcycle and 4x4 trips may appear dangerous, Craig says the biggest risk is the safety aspect from a routes perspective, rather than crime, and they mitigate against this with much planning. Self-guided trips are popular and these are GPS-guided for

maximum enjoyment and safety. “The inaccuracies of Google Maps particularly when it comes to off-road conditions, locked gates and changes in dry and wet seasons, make motorcycle travel a challenge to those with little or no route knowledge,” he emphasises. Craig and his team of operators within the DSA-Group are particularly mindful of the impact of adventure tourism on the natural environment. They know which regions do not allow motorcycles, which have limited access by 4x4, what the rules are in the various game reserves and national parks in South Africa and neighbouring countries. He would never create a route that includes areas that are off-limits, he says. Instead, he organises for the correct vehicle for access, such as bicycles in the moonscape region of Sossusvlei. “The adventure tourer is usually very eco-friendly and they stick to the rules,” he adds. Any adventure holiday needs to be documented and as a professional photographer, Craig ensures the best shots are captured, including using drones, as part of the offering. These are among the most shared shots and a powerful word-of-mouth marketing tool.

Increased global awareness about the impact of tourism on biodiversity, ecosystems and animals means tourists are keen to know the impact of their decisions, particularly on animal welfare. Tour operators are now more selective about the tourism experiences and companies included in their packages. And there is increasing opposition to experiences that include animal interactions, which is starting to impact tourism businesses, irrespective of how ethical or well-intentioned their approach to animal interactions may be. The impact has also filtered through to how South Africa is being perceived as a tourism destination. The contentious issue of animal interaction was discussed at SATSA’s conference in August 2017. There are a vast range of opinions on the topic and the impact of tour operator decisions on the sustainability of some businesses. There is a perception that all tourism businesses that offer animal interaction are being tarred with the same brush, irrespective of the actual practices adopted. It is also evident that different tourism markets are seeking varying levels of interactive animal experiences and some operators would like to continue providing experiences that meet the needs of their clientele. Realising that this is a very sensitive subject and that livelihoods are at stake, Satsa is set to appoint an independent research specific firm to: • Define the types of entities that fall within the ambit of animal interactions • Develop an ethical framework to evaluate operations that involve animal interactions • Develop a set of guidelines for the self-regulation of animal interaction tourism experiences For more information go to www.satsa.com.

Overland tenting | Image courtesy of African Budget Safaris

Bucket list on a budget Terry Murphy, owner of African Budget Safaris, offers a wide range of tourism activities aimed at the budget-conscious traveller. He has been in the travel industry for some time and saw a lot of emphasis on the luxury market as well as the backpacker crowd. In 2006 he launched his company to meet the needs of the gap in the market in between, with clientele mostly between the ages of 18 to 39 years old looking for an adventurous trip at a budget-friendly price. A big hit is the camping safari, which reduces costs but includes all the splendour of the African landscape. “The overland industry has grown significantly since the 1970s when it was a communal trip for guys with a vehicle, who would take on a few passengers. Now we have accommodated tours and camping tours in large, specialised trucks carrying around 20 to 25 people per vehicle. Adventurous clients can travel from Cape Town to Nairobi, on different lengths of trip. We emphasise that these are adventure, participatory safaris so guests are encouraged to get stuck into putting up tents and helping out. The cost is a small percentage of what they would pay if they were to do the same trip in a smaller safari vehicle and stay in luxury lodges,” Terry explains. He also offers various packages for the over-40s age group that are less strenuous but still have an adventure component. Terry says the overland trips are

especially appealing to women travelling alone and youngsters, who often find the idea of travelling around Africa by themselves quite daunting. “About 40 to 60% of our clients are women and independent young travellers – it’s a definite trend,” he adds. Road trips are organised into remote parts of Africa amidst wildlife. Terry says there is an entire industry of suppliers of regional activities that revolves around the overland industry, specifically aimed at the adventure market. Activities include helicopter flights over Victoria Falls, white-water rafting, river boarding, canoeing on the Zambezi, bungee jumping and tandem bridge swings. “Many smaller towns along popular routes have specifically catered for the adventure market in response to the rapid growth of the overland industry,” Terry notes. “There are probably around ten big companies that do this particular style of travel, which means a constant flow of tourists within this age group into these towns.” In Cape Town, adventures will be tailored to offerings in the region. One of the most popular is the shark diving industry. “South Africa has the leading shark diving industry in the world. It’s inexpensive compared to other places and clients come out specifically to do this,” he says. It’s also a huge industry in terms of education and self-regulation as they operate within a particular area in Gansbaai and any kind of breach of ethics

will be reported by other operators. “We have rave reviews for shark encounters from our clients. They also create positive awareness of the value of sharks within the ecosystem and dispel the myth of the Jaws hysteria,” Terry maintains. Terry supports Satsa’s initiatives to look into the ethical side of animal encounters. This is in line with international trends, he notes, with visitors from the UK and Europe already aware of the move away from animal encounters that are unnatural or lead to later cruelty, like canned lion hunting. There are other ways to get close to animals in nature without harm, he adds.

Capers in the Cape Haadin Waggie of Adventure Sports and Tours 4U says the concept of adventure is different for everyone: “It’s about getting out of your comfort zone and doing something out of the norm, sometimes with an element of danger,” he explains. “We offer a wide range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, rock climbing, sandboarding, river rafting, surfing, watersports, land sports, traditional tours and safaris.” Haadin says depending on the activity being requested, clients are assessed for fitness, prior experience and competence in the activity, and every precaution is taken by guides to ensure safety. “The idea is for the client to have fun and go back with good memories and a new experience,” he adds. Most of Haadin’s tours take place

in the Cape and he says visitors have great respect for the environment, from mountains to nature reserves to the ocean. Business and corporate clients may choose an adventure tourism experience as part of a team-building exercise, where there is some challenge involved. Others prefer simpler excursions that are still thrilling, like a safari with game drives – he says you can’t underestimate how exciting seeing the Big 5 is for international visitors. A hugely popular activity is sandboarding. There is concern among sandboarding operators, however, as some of the dunes are being handed over to conservation authorities to manage, resulting in new rules and higher prices. He shares the passion of conservationists but believes there is a balance to be found. “We’re always looking for something new and special. This year we’re building sea kayaks and look forward to getting people out into the ocean at sunrise and sunset,” he adds. Many clients come to the Cape to participate in a specific major sporting event, like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which has international appeal. Adventure Sports and Tours 4U arranges all of the logistics of bringing its clients to Cape Town to participate in the event.

Ekasi excitement Duwayne Putter of Ekasi Adventure Tours in Port Elizabeth believes there is an adventure offering around every corner in South Africa, if you care to look. Offering tours

into poverty-stricken Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth, in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, he says international tourists are intrigued but initially nervous to spend time in an unfamiliar environment. They soon feel the warmth of the community, which welcomes visitors into their taverns and homes to experience what township living is really like. Duwayne was inspired to offer this unique experience after undertaking a few township tours in Cape Town. He sees it as a way for the local community to get involved in uplifting themselves. Proceeds from his tours are ploughed back into the community, specifically the Rainbow Educare Centre in Walmer Township which is a day centre for around 40 children. The tour starts in the main street – Fountain Avenue – which has lively “kasi vibes” from pop-up shops of goods and services, such as barbers, street food and arts and crafts. “The tours are adventurous because they’re immersive: tourists get to see, taste, smell, hear, touch and experience township life, culture, food and beverages, dancing, stories. You get invited into someone’s home and listen to their life story, their journey, their struggles, their triumphs – it’s the real deal,” explains Duwayne. International visitors are blown away by the tours, saying they’ve never experienced anything like it in their lives. They go home with memories and images of a hidden gem in South Africa.

WILDLIFE INTERACTIONS –

A CONTENTIOUS ISSUE The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) has broken ties with Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) following the announcement of the organisation’s captive wildlife criteria.

W

e feel that the recently introduced FTT captive wildlife criteria are not strict enough; they are open to interpretation, and don’t sufficiently address the interest of captive wildlife,” says Tony Blignaut, CEO of SAASA. “However, we are fully committed to continue following the other FTT principles in our business model as we believe these represent best practice in the industry.” He says SAASA would realign with FFT only when their captive wildlife criteria is more in line with what is better for animals. The four SAASA wildlife sanctuaries – Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Jukani and Monkeyland KZN – put the welfare and the needs of their animals above all else and believe that they have an intrinsic right to be treated respectfully. They have always

falconry where birds are tethered.” Lara Mostert, marketing manager for SAASA, adds, “We don’t allow any handson interaction in any of our sanctuaries, regardless whether we deal with lions, lemurs or budgies. We do understand the need for businesses to be financially viable in order to look after those same animals in a sustainable manner. However, every business needs to find the ethical balance between animal welfare and financial health. The compromise at Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, for example, is to have feeding stations set up in strategic places that encourage the animals to feed in public access areas, but with the complete freedom of coming and going whenever they like. This allows visitors close-up encounters without the need for hands-on interaction or to hand feed the animals.”

prescribed to a complete hands-off rule when it comes to their sanctuaries and have adopted a “no grey areas” policy. “It’s the grey areas where the disagreement lies. FTT based their captive wildlife criteria mostly on the widely accepted ABTA Animal Welfare Guidelines. However, the latter still allow for some humanwildlife interaction and feeding of wildlife, as long as a thorough risk assessment has been undertaken,” Tony explains. He says SAASA would like to see the FTT certification standard for captive wildlife be made more stringent and adopt the Dutch ANVR Addendum of Unacceptable Practices Regarding Animals in Tourism. “The ANVR have taken a firm stance against, for example, walking with any big cats, as well as using birds of prey for display and

BIGGER THAN EVER MULTI

SPORTS FESTIVAL BACK AT SCC

Sports tourism remains a major draw card to South Africa.

T

he Sandton Convention Centre is hosting the large and exciting, multi-faceted, Arnold Sport Festival for the third consecutive year, from 18 to 20 May, featuring over 70 sporting codes – up from 48 accommodated in the inaugural festival in 2016. Wayne Price, organiser and shareholder of the Arnold festival in South Africa with his wife, Michelle, and president of the SA Body Building Federation, says, “We have been delighted with the growing success of the Arnold festivals held at Sandton Convention Centre for the past two years – and this year we are going bigger than

ever, introducing 16 new sporting codes.” This year for the first time, the festival will extend onto Alice Lane which runs behind the Convention Centre and will be closed off for the festival weekend to accommodate various sporting activities. Included in the new codes are exciting sports such as beach tennis, ice hockey, e-sports, multiplayer video game competitions, speed cubing, and many more. The Arnold Sports Festival, which was founded in Ohio USA in 1989 under the auspices of Arnold Schwarzenegger initially as a bodybuilding competition, has expanded into a global annual event

hosted on six continents for a rapidly growing number of physical and mental sports, giving athletes the opportunity to compete in international competitions against participants from around the world. The Arnold in Africa embraces numerous sporting codes and is jampacked with contests, demonstrations, record attempts and amazing feats. This year additional contests will feature on the programme, including an art project and model search. Shaun Bird, GM of SCC, says, “Hosting this vibrant and exciting sports festival annually, is a highlight on our event calendar and a logistical challenge that we thrive on. Every single

Shaun Bird, GM of SCC, says the Arnold Sport Festival is a highlight on their event calendar and he and his team thrive on the logistical challenge of maximizing every square metre of the venue when hosting the event. © Derek Guthrie space in our 22 000m2 venue is used effectively – every floor, room, and loading bay – to accommodate the over 15 000 athletes who participate, the upward of 62 000 visitors and spectators, as well as the exhibition showcasing a range of sports and fitness products from about 250 exhibitors.” As the largest sport festival of its kind in South Africa, the Arnold organising team has to stay way ahead of the game to make sure the event comes together smoothly. Says Michelle Price, “We tend to start organising the following year’s event a week after the Arnold, but with the rapid growth of the event, we are already in planning stages for the 2019 festival, and we have a full-time team selling expo space and sponsorship throughout the year.” Wayne and Michelle Price are impressed with the wide-ranging space and facilities offered by the Sandton Convention Centre, as well as its extended facilities at the other Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile properties, the Sandton Sun, the InterContinental

Johannesburg Sandton Towers, and Garden Court Sandton City. “We need a lot of space – and that’s what makes the SCC so suitable for our event. Of course the building is also wheelchair friendly, and very importantly, the SCC staff are always exceptionally helpful. From booking a meeting room, to catering, and attending our project meetings, they are brilliant and always willing to assist us,” says Michelle, adding that over the Arnold festival weekend, the pressure on everyone is very high, “but the SCC team always remains calm and together we always come up with solutions to any problems that may arise.” Bird says that the Convention Centre’s capacity to host events of all styles and sizes – from small to enormous, its location in the heart of Johannesburg’s premier business and retail district, and the wide range of accommodation and facilities in the Tsogo Sun Sandton Mile properties, all contribute to its tremendous value and strong reputation as a world-class multipurpose venue, locally and internationally.

Arnold Classic Africa 2017 Highlights from last year’s event: • Held in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). • More than 14 200 professional and amateur athletes from across South Africa and around the world attended, some 7 800 of which were youth athletes. • Attracted more than 62 000 visitors to watch the 58 sporting codes take place indoors and outdoors, as well as the Health and Fitness Expo. • Some 200 exhibition spaces were utilised, representing more than 75 different brands. • The estimated direct spend in the area by visitors from outside the region was more than R35.7-million.

TM Africa 2018 has been a major success with exhibitors and buyers alike already expressing their interest in WTM Africa 2019! We have seen a steady of flow of foot traffic across the exhibition floor over all three days, and record attendance at all of our speaker sessions,” says Chardonnay Marchesi, South Africa Portfolio Director for Reed Exhibitions’ Travel, Tourism & Sports Portfolio. Key and emerging source markets were represented in buyers and travel professionals from 58 countries, including the Americas, Asia Pacific and Middle Eastern regions from countries such as United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, India,

Brazil, Canada and Argentina. The third day of WTM Africa 2018 saw the continued success of the Speed Networking events, with exhibitors meeting with over 135 buyers to showcase their products. The focus on digital trends and technology on tourism was highlighted too at the E-Tourism Africa Summit (ETAS), as well as throughout the presentation on the future and challenges of influencer marketing with iambassador. “Travel and tourism are global businesses with a worldwide market, and it is vital that companies either large or small know and understand how the market is developing and how their customers are using online platforms

both for business and leisure. The ETAS discussions give a great snapshot of what is happening globally online for travel and it helps businesses to think about their online priorities for the coming year,” surmised Damian Cook, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers, who facilitated ETAS. Once again, WTM Africa 2018 was delighted to partner with the City of Cape Town. The continued support of the city is a key factor in the success of the show, and the involvement of the City of Cape Town is testament to the importance of WTM Africa 2018 within the tourism landscape. Alderman Patricia De Lille, Executive Mayor City of Cape Town revealed: “We will unveil a public artwork of the former President at the City Hall to coincide with his birthday in July 2018. In 2019, on the anniversary of his release and historic address to the world on 11 February 1990, we will open the exhibition. This will contribute to the rich tourist experience that already exists in Cape Town’s historic central city, the oldest urban area in southern Africa.”

“WTM Africa has been a really good experience for Dream Hotels. PIN INCENTIVE TRAVEL PROGRAMMES ON EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS With incentive travel proving to be an increasingly exciting growth opportunity, enterprises are still faced with the question of how to integrate travel rewards with sustainable business practice. This is where events and exhibitions come in as a key factor underpinning incentive travel initiatives. Because relevant business events and exhibitions play a crucial role in upskilling, knowledge-sharing and business networking, there is no doubt they are an important part of everyday business best practice. However, B2B events and exhibitions also serve as a useful catalyst for incentive travel and leisure. Since industry participants will clearly benefit from attendance at an event, incorporating leisure travel is a cost-effective and logistically sensible way to add value to the event. Africa is fortunate in that it is a leisure travel destination of choice for many foreign travelers, so events and exhibitions in Africa have a direct and positive impact on the incentive travel market. South Africa’s popularity is largely due to its unparalleled nature, wildlife, adventure tourism and diverse, rich cultures. In fact, our research has found that in 2015 alone, attendees at South African business exhibitions spent nearly R5-billion. While attending the event was their primary reason for

www.theevent.co.za

travelling to the country or exhibition city, visitors also had holiday travel, shopping and visiting friends on their agendas. Domestic visitors stayed an average of 2.3 nights in an event host city, but only 1.1 nights specifically for the exhibition or conference. Foreign visitors stayed longer – an average of 4.8 nights in South Africa, but only 1.7 nights specifically for the exhibition. Aiming to raise Africa’s profile as an exhibition, conferencing and incentive travel destination, AAXO is now actively seeking closer ties with international exhibition and events bodies. Recently, we signed a strategic agreement with our Italian counterpart, the Italian Exhibition and Trade Fair Association (AEFI), to support bilateral growth and collaboration. AAXO will also participate in the upcoming Indian Exhibition Industry IEAI Open Seminar in Hyderabad, India, and is strengthening alliance with U.S. industry bodies with a view to strengthening U.S and African industry collaborations. PCO BIDS FAREWELL TO JACQUELINE STUMKE The PCO Alliance Network announced the semi-retirement and relocation of founder and Chairlady, Jacqueline Stumke, on February 16 2018. Jacqueline’s official farewell was subsequently held at Avinato Hotel, in collaboration with a number of other sponsors, on March 25. The occasion was great fun, with Jacqueline saying: “I think I’m only coming down now from absolute Cloud Nine – that awesome day, that most memorable occasion which I will cherish the memory of forever!” Ellen Oosthuizen, EXCO member who held the Inbound and outbound PCO Alliance Network Tours portfolio, has been appointed as Vice-Chairlady effective from 01 April 2018. Ellen will work alongside and be guided by Jacqueline, who will retain executive responsibility for the strategy and management of the organisation. Following a career of more than 33 years organising conferences, exhibitions and events, Jacqueline announced her new plans at the Alliance’s first quarterly meeting of 2018. She, with her husband Robin, will shortly be relocating to the Cape. Jacqueline will continue in her fully-dedicated role as Chairlady and, while not being present at various site-inspections and tours, she will be physically present as the Cape-based “branch” of the PCO Alliance Network.

Five South African events companies have committed to sponsor research into the use of wood and wood products in exhibitions, with a specific focus on how much of this material is used, how it is disposed of as waste, and how it can be used more responsibly. This move is indicative of a growing conviction among business that more needs to be done to promote responsible practices within the industry. The five companies are: African Graphix, bluClube, Inspire Furniture Rentals, New World and Scan Display. The research was initiated by the Event Greening Forum (EGF), after its committee members noticed a trend towards more custom exhibition stands being commissioned. Out of a number of proposals, the University of Pretoria was chosen to conduct the research. To cover the cost, the EGF invited the industry to sponsor the research. Six sponsorships of R10 000 each were proposed. With five sponsorship spots already being taken, one still remains open. All sponsors will be acknowledged for their financial support in the published research. If you would like to take up the remaining sponsorship opportunity, please contact Lynn McLeod for more information on 082 891 5883 or email her at lynn@eventgreening.co.za.
