MEETINGS AFRICA 2013 – BUILDING AFRICA INTO A GLOBAL GIANT, TOGETHER

W

ELCOME TO MEETINGS AFRICA 2013, themed ‘Advancing Africa Together’, so anticipate a distinctly African flavor as you go about doing business over the next three days. We are delighted to welcome a record number of quality international, regional and local buyers, delegates and exhibitors. This is testimony that this year’s event will deliver excellent business and networking opportunities. Seventy eight percent of the international hosted buyers attending this year’s Meetings Africa have never been to South Africa before. They represent a potential of almost 62 000 delegates that could attend business events held in South Africa.

As a delegate, exhibitor or visitor, you are an essential role-player in a wonderful African story about to unfold, and we’re delighted that you’re on board. Our panAfrican strategy has been carefully devised to unleash the power of co-operation across the African business events industry, and to offer full support to all delegates in making it happen. This continent has the potential to become a world giant in business event hosting, and each Meetings Africa attendee is an essential building block in this dream. The host of Meetings Africa 2013, the South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB), works collaboratively with key partners in the industry, to develop the business event industry and grow its market globally. The SANCB has based this drive on well-researched data that shows unequivocally that there is huge, untapped potential to grow business events - not only in South Africa but across the continent where economic growth has been nearly five percent over the last two years. Come visit the SANCB stand located at the entrance of the exhibition floor. We are on stand number 500. At this year’s show the SANCB will seek to secure more African association meetings, attract more business event arrivals, partner with African professionals to grow Africa, and to secure a higher International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranking

for South Africa. We are doing well, but by working together we can do even better and Meetings Africa is an excellent platform. A few changes have been introduced this year to enhance Meetings Africa. Today is the Business Opportunity Networking Day (BOND) and offers workshops and seminars tailor-made for delegates to meet and strike up business partnerships, and to hear from the business events industry’s leading local and global experts. A valuable addition this year is an international hosted buyer qualification process led by International Conference and Incentive Travel Research (ICR) Inc, a thorough vetting system that investigates each nominated buyer, their track record and business portfolio. Another hugely significant platform for business events growth in the region is South Africa’s membership of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The business events industry is well placed to grow, and grow fast. With the willing buy-in, co-operation and partnership by industry role-players like yourselves, business events will become one of the most important and sustainable economic development sectors in South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. And Meetings Africa is the engine room of this work. May it be profitable and successful for us all.

DEPUTY MINISTER OF TOURISM, TOKOZILE XASA, TALKS AFRICAN INTERGRATION AT MEETINGS AFRICA 2013

Deputy Minister of Tourism, South Africa, Tokozile Xasa

I

t is important to have a discussion on integrated tourism in Africa. Tourism is a key element in the promotion of growth, socio-economic development and unity of our continent. Africa is now directing more and more of its energies towards enhancing socio-economic development of its people and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) whose target date is just around the corner in 2015. Tourism is regarded as a fast growing industry that is likely to contribute immensely to the eradication of poverty, achievement of the MDGs and integration of Africa. Hence, the AU Commission wishes to maximise exploitation of this sector in its bid to improve the livelihood of the people of the continent and, at the same time, market what is best of Africa to the world. As a continent, the time has come for us to embark on activities to support better tourism policies in Africa, as well as to create employment opportunities through increased investment in, and marketing of, African destinations. We need to find models that can increase the visibility of Africa as a tourism destination and mobilise investment for sustainable tourism projects in Africa. We have quite a number of investors keen to come to our shores because they have realised the huge business opportunities in the African tourism sector.

According to the figures released by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in October of 2012, International tourism in Africa has almost doubled since 2000, growing from 26 million international tourist arrivals to 50 million in 2011. International tourism receipts, a vital source of foreign exchange in the region, tripled in just one decade (from US$ 10 billion in 2000 to US$ 33 billion in 2010). As a continent, we regard ourselves as developing nations. Our countries fully regard tourism as an important and integral part of their economic development strategies. This point tallies perfectly with the issue of integration. There is general recognition that the real question is not whether there should be co-operation or integration, but rather to identify that combination of cooperation, coordination and integration, that is realistic and feasible under prevailing conditions, and that could thus best advance the goals of contributing to growth and development of Tourism in Africa. The new trend for tourism growth is establishing regional hubs which allow marketing and promotion within the identified area of common features. In South Africa, my department, which is the National Department of Tourism would in partnership with South African Tourism (SAT) implement the Africa Hub Strategy. The opening of a country office in Nigeria, Angola and Kenya by South African Tourism (SAT) will boost the Departmental hub strategy efforts. Also critical will be partnerships with departments such as Transport, Public Enterprises on air links and Home Affairs in facilitating the movement of tourists to SA from these regional hubs. The agenda for discussion centres on Advancing Africa Together. The acceleration of Africa’s regional integration is imperative for its future economic competitiveness and its development and prosperity. The development of skills, infrastructure and interconnectivity, intra-regional trade, common markets, and the removal of trade barriers will be essential. The integration of SADC remains critical for the economic development of the region and for South Africa’s global competiveness. Regional economic cooperation

and integration offers an opportunity for regional industries to overcome the limits of small national markets and enhance competitiveness as a platform to participate at global economy. South Africa will continue to place particular focus on cross border infrastructure development. We believe that the integration of SADC, the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS), East African community (EAC) will advance political unity and economic strength of Africa. As you might be all aware; the traditional role of government is to formulate policy for the tourism sector. Yes, that is true. However, things have changed and we have to evolve with the emerging trends as a Continent. Today, the focus has changed because of changing priorities occasioned by development in the international tourism scene (e.g. the emergence of consumer interests). The challenge for national governments is to formulate tourism sector policies that best reflect the new thinking. We have a responsibility to review the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Tourism Action Plan. It is critical that South Africa, in cooperation with its African partners, continue to support the implementation of NEPAD programmes, particularly those that strengthen cross-border infrastructure development, ICT, agricultural, tourism, capacity building and industrialisation. We need to work closely with the media as partners and educate the world about this tourism destination called Africa. As much as it has its own challenges, there are good stories that will continue to motivate people to explore this destination. As Africa, we are not only looking at International tourists but we do promote domestic tourism so that our people can appreciate the beauty within their borders. I therefore urge you all to follow the discussion we are going to have with the African Ambassadors here at Meetings Africa 2013, under the theme “Advancing Africa Together” This will take place tomorrow, Tuesday 19 February 2013 here at the Sandton Convention Centre.

GOING GREEN!

ook closely and you’ll see – Meetings Africa is leading the event greening trend! From booking the most direct flights possible for the international hosted buyers and media to purchasing renewable energy to power the show, Meetings Africa aims to minimize its negative impact on the environment and promote a positive social legacy for the local community. “The exhibition and events industry has a huge environmental footprint, but also has the potential to manage this to create social and environmental benefits, as well as financial savings. The bottom line is about efficiency, and we can’t keep on wasting our precious resources as we did in the past,” says Grace Stead, Event Greening Forum Vice-Chair. Meetings Africa’s commitment to greening initiatives reflects a wider trend by South African Tourism, an early adapter of the global greening trend. Responsible tourism is playing a growing role in the development of the local tourism industry, and South African Tourism (SAT) continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability by incorporating sustainable practices. In 2013, Meetings Africa has again hired Steadfast Greening, an independent consultant, to compile an eco audit report of the event. The eco audit report is based on the principles of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Protocol, and is based on data gathered through interviews, on-site inspections and data capturing done before, during and after the event. Every year Meetings Africa has sought to improve on the performance of the previous year. For instance, in 2011, 60 per cent of the show’s waste was recycled. In 2012, this increased to 78 per cent, and exceeded the target SAT set to recycle 75 per cent of the waste at the show.

Water: If catering for an event, please always include jugs of water as an option for guests Eco-procurement: Organic and locally produced food, drink, and arts and crafts, generally have a smaller carbon and ecological footprint than imported products. They also stimulate the local economy Transport: Be organized, so you can minimize the number of truck trips required for the job

Waste: Reuse your bubble wrap and boxes after the show, contact the Food Bank to collect any excess food you have, so they may distribute it to community projects struggling with food scarcity Catering: Investigate using energy efficient appliances, having good insulation, only turning on appliances as needed Stand Builders: Promote energy efficient technology in your stand design (such as iPads over AV screens, or LED lighting rather than halogens) and avoid designs that require excessive lighting

LINDA PEREIRA, Executive Director of CPL Events, Portugal. Linda is a renowned international speaker on international association topics and was the 2012 Stream Chairperson – Association Congress. Association Day concludes with a Gala Dinner that cannot be missed. This year’s theme is “Fire and Water” – elements that best showcase Africa’s spirit of achievement and determination to succeed. Fire depicts the burning passion that all Africans share for their continent. It emphasises the fiery ambition with which each new venture is undertaken. Water, on the other hand, symbolises fertility. It is the source of life itself. South African Tourism chose this element because it is a powerful source of energy and unwavering determination for a continent that is continuously advancing to a brighter future for all.
