he University Supreme Students Government (USSG) dedicated a virtual celebration to recognize teachers and professors during the annual World Teachers’ Day (WTD) amidst the pandemic on October 29.

However, he mentioned that USSG faced inconvenience in delivering the physical prizes because they were given to the teachers individually.

Before the celebration, Joaquin Miguel Timones, USSG Public Relations Officer, mentioned that they disseminated the information through USSG Facebook page and classroom president group chats. During the WTD celebration, the teachers played the games virtually unusual from the previous years.

The cash donation funds this year’s celebration. Student organizations of four colleges also joined the celebration with intermission numbers from URSM Band, Inrayog de Moro, and URSM Chorale.

“Personally, I find it fun because even the students themselves can join the games not just the teachers. Therefore, all out interaction was expected and it was delivered accordingly,” said Timones.

Butas na bulsa aslub an satuB

M

OPINION Educators Educators influence influence on on students’ students’ standpoint standpoint for for the the upcoming upcoming election election

T

he 2021 presidential election is quickly approaching. In previous months, voter re gistration, education, and activism have started to get essential. To make the most of this last stretch, campaigns and community organizers are updating their outreach methods. It is also a crucial time for K–12 schools to recognize and accept their role in educating young people for civic involvement. However, the current situation, COVID-19 pandemic, introduces a unique level of difficulty and complication in encouraging and enabling the teenagers to vote. The experiences of young people who were educated and encouraged to vote in high school matter, and young people and young voters have the power to influence elections in a variety of ways. It is also evident that, due to COVID-19, schooling this year was everything, but a routine. For the purpose of youth involvement in 2021 and beyond, educators, administrators, and parents must integrate voting and elections in their collaborative efforts to determine what students’ educational experiences will look like in the months ahead. The immense power and influence of a teacher may jeopardize students’ ability to engage in discourse and debate to form their own opinions about candidates, topics, and the process. However, if the teacher’s opinion is communicated too forcibly, it can restrict voices and contradict education’s goal of opening rather than closing minds. Educators shall realize how great their influence is on the mindset of the students. Instead of promoting a candidate or a party-list, would not it be beneficial to impart how to be a wise Filipino especially in times of election? In a year when teachers and administrators are dealing with unprecedented obstacles, ensuring that students are prepared to vote remains one of the most important. It has the potential to have a long-term impact on young people’s engagement in elections and civic life in their communities.

that her parents also somewhat struggle financially.

Battle. Collect. Earn To cope with the struggles, one chooses to be a working student, but what Licca Edelyn Rellores, a striving sister III-BEED-CC2, shared her happens when a struggle came one after from experience as a working student–an Axie another? Infinity scholar.

Online learning for her is difficult, and it is more of a problem than a solution. For her, she barely learns, and it is just mere compliance of the activities.

Droplets of dream

She struggles the most with time management; attending online classes, doing activities, working, bonding with family, doing household chores, and even resting. She sometimes submits her output later than the deadline especially when it is due within the day. Also, due to her unstable internet connectivity, the stress and anxiety during class increases. There are times that even if she wants to participate she is being limited. In which, she feels that she is not doing well enough and results to breakdown and sleepless nights.

Vincent Santiago is a persevering father from the BTLED program. He is now a working student employed as a delivery boy in a water refilling station in Baras, Rizal.

Axie Infinity is a gaming platform where users can earn from playing at the comfort of one’s home. It is undeniably popular among the students nowadays because it helps them earn while studying.

“It was difficult for me to be in this work because the built of my body is not appropriate to this kind of work,” he narrated. The nature of his work requires him to meet and socialize with people which can be a threat for his health. However, he is still able to continue his work with proper adherence to the health protocols. Despite the risk, he still chose to be in this path to practically earn something, so he can suffice his needs in school, and the needs of his child.

As they say in this game, no one starts skilled enough. As a newbie, she started from scratch, but through perseverance she now spends approximately 3-4 hours per day to accomplish the tasks which are not easy to do. As the level increases, its difficulty and complexity also increases.

For him, the group activities are the most challenging part of his setup. He was not able to participate in his group, and became a burden because he works during weekends. In terms of doing school activities, there are times that he forgets to do some, or some of the outputs were made rushed. Apart from that, things went more challenging due to an event that changed him and his family’s life. He became mentally unstable.

She endures the stress, tiredness, and eye strain due to facing the screen all day; from online class to work.

From the start to far apart By Quennie P. Lessano

I saw you first in the aisle, I stopped and looked for a while, Looking at your handsome smile, Then I walked again a hundred miles. Every time I saw you walking, I cannot resist my feeling, My heart never stops beating, 'Coz, I know you are my everything. Many days had passed, I wish it wouldn't last, Sharing a life of happiness, That forget all my sadness. Sometimes I wonder what you think? When you hear my name, do you smile and feel sick? Do you also dream about me every night? Wish to hug me and hold me tight. But after I knew you'd committed to someone, I was loveless and couldn't share my feelings with anyone, And now I think we are done, But still, for me, you are the only one. Your happiness is my priority, So here I am making you happy, By doing my best to set you free, Even it is a big impossibility. I had loved you from the start, I gave you all my heart, But I think, it will be smart, If we will be far apart.

Ang Bata sa Hallway ng COE Building Ni Quennie P. Lessano

S

#URSMEncounters #TrueNga

Room of rope Words by Shergie Gwyneth N. Ocampo

This area is too narrow to feel the comfort. The sun shone through the frames of my blocked window. While stumbling to my feet and approaching the entrance, I punched through the pavement. There seemed to be no one else in the room. I could hear cries and yells through the thin walls. The loud buzzing sounds filled my ears and sent shivers up and down my spine. All was silence after I heard her door was shut. Another loud cry has vanished. I haven't seen or heard where they’re taken, and I'm not sure if I’d like to know anyhow. Sometimes, it's wonderful to be clueless.

how tired we are of living this life.

It became too conventional to live in this eight-by-eleven dungeon. A daily plan, displayed on my wall, informed me what I had planned for the day. All of my actions were scheduled around the findings of my previous tests. 2 -3 times a day, psychotherapy discussions were scheduled. Panic and anxiety attacks became more frequent and lasted for hours at a time. My arms were covered with open wounds, and I was losing hair at the rate of an aging 40-year-old. The triggers appeared around practically every corner, often in the most unexpected places.

The lady was stoned at first, but she let out a sweet smile.

I don’t have any memory of my life outside. They keep on telling me to focus on myself and not get too anxious thinking about who I am outside these walls. Nurses and staff have always told us that this place is our haven. But, one thing is for sure, this place is excruciating.

I don’t have any clue about my life, yet a feeling for wanting the idea of death lingers on my mind. It felt like death was the only way. As I ate the meal our nurses had served, I raised a question making the nurse gasp from surprise. “Why do you people try so hard to keep us alive?” I asked. “Why don’t you people just let us die and be free from ourselves?” I added.

“You know what, my sister died three years ago from suicide. No one was there for her; even me, who studied Psychology, never had a glimpse of her suicidal feelings. I guess, I want to save you and everyone around here from death because your life is worth saving. Most people here feel lost and scared to survive. Some people here cannot decide fully on their own.” She spoke. “Do I deserve to live?” I asked, secretly hoping that she'd say yes. And just like what I hoped for, “Yes, you deserve life and survival,” she answered. Thank you. I mouthed. This place locks me up from the outside world. I lost my identity and lived here as an aged newborn baby, and just like a child, I deserve my life.

LITERARY ARTS Emotional Emotional Dungeons Dungeons at at Home, Home, how how does does it it feel? feel? Words by Shergie Gwyneth N. Ocampo

They say Home is where we feel our safest. People say that our Home is the place we ran to at our darkest point in life. What if that ‘home’ doesn’t offer the feeling of safety in our minds? What if we feel lost in our own Home? Or maybe, what if our Home doesn’t feel like Home anymore? Many of us experience that uncomfortable feeling flowing through our bodies: anxiety. That sensation might range from profound five-alarm bells noisily wailing to dread lurking in the shadows of our mind. When this happens, people may disengage socially to escape the feeling of hopelessness. People go through life afraid of confronting the source of their constant anxiety. We think we’re worried because both our parents are already anxious. We recognize that we are worried because we have suffered from trauma around one or more moments in our lives. We believe that there's no way out of this situation, but we do our best to squeeze it out and make it through. There are several instances wherein people feel that their Home is a pit of depressive feelings. Fact: we don't feel safe a lot of the time, and this lack of safety is the primary cause of all the dread we experience. Most have no clue what it means to feel safe. Plenty of us have never had our parents reassure us that no matter how bad things were in our lives. We will eventually not only be okay but prosper.

Optimism and hope were never fostered in several homes. The notion of safety at Home became a dungeon of oppressive rules that needed to be followed. The idea of being mentally safe at Home became a pit of bashful words and manipulative actions. Whenever I see how happy other children are with their families and parents, I notice how bright their parents glistened just by the sight of their child. It made me ponder: did my parents ever gaze at me with warmth? I guess that sensation that being passionately loved offers a child comfort, self-assurance, and protection. I guess that sensation that being passionately loved offers a child comfort, self-assurance, and protection. Feeling wanted makes us feel secure. Being safe means not reprimanding yourself or believing that everything excellent in your existence is on the verge of disappearing. Safety is not the feeling as if you're about to tumble over a high peak and not being concerned about being judged by people. It's the ability to rediscover the secure area within oneself put aside when we're younger. That safe zone is present when we are born, but we lose our way there due to the abuse and neglect of those who are supposed to look after us. Being mentally healthy is also a result of a healthy environment. If the Home doesn’t feel like ‘home,’ where should we run to?
