‘As women, we’ve had to fight for every opportunity. In athletics, we were excluded from many Olympic events because we were deemed to be “physically incapable”: triple jump was only added in 1996; hammer throw and pole vault in 2000; and steeplechase in 2008. In business, we’re still struggling with gender parity – but at least it’s on the boardroom agenda. Whether forced or organic, conversations about diversity and inclusion are finally taking place. ‘The pandemic has proved that flexible working is completely possible and, in some cases, even more productive. But, on
the flip side, we know that the majority of women are still taking on the lion’s share of domestic responsibilities and at-home labour. As a society, we need to address that. Workplaces also need to make sure that women don’t pay a promotion penalty for working at home. So much happens as a result of proximity.’

On her current role: ‘In 2019, I became the BBC’s first Director of Creative Diversity. The BBC is made for all of us, so it should represent all of us, which is why we ringfenced £112m of commissioning budget for diverse and inclusive content. Over the next few years, expect to see fantastic programmes coming out from new creative talent. My remit was always to set things up, then pass the baton on to someone else, so I’ll be stepping back as soon as we’ve found a successor. Next, I’d love to build my own business. Watch this space!’
I didn’t think I was capable or in the right headspace but this was a chance to do something great for my country and, lo and behold, we won the bid. I’m currently president of Team England, a BBC sports presenter and a mother of four – constantly spinning plates!’

On her current role: ‘After retiring from athletics, I went through a spell of feeling lost and low. It took me a while to separate the performer from the person and build myself up again. I had to accept that just because I wasn’t out there winning medals any more, it didn’t mean I’d become insignificant. I wanted to use my experience to inspire the next generation of athletes so I became an ambassador for Youth Sport Trust. I also received a call from Lord Sebastian Coe, one of my childhood idols, asking me to travel to Singapore as part of the London 2012 presentation team.

From representing small island nations threatened by the effects of global heating and getting the target of net-zero emissions by 2050 included in the Paris Agreement to glueing myself to the forecourt of the
Shell building as part of the Extinction Rebellion protests in 2019, my work is all about bringing the voice of the vulnerable to the table. The fossil fuel industry has known about climate devastation for decades but has tried to deny climate science and hoodwink the public.’

‘People may think that women are breaking glass ceilings and racism has ended – but that’s far from the truth. Of all the philanthropic funding to tackle climate change, 90% goes to organisations led by white people and 80% goes to organisations led by men, according to a report by the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity. It’s shocking.
My current work focuses on challenging traditional power structures and making sure climate philanthropy is focusing on achieving climate justice, especially by funding diverse and marginalisedhistoricallypeople.’

Bosses need to put clear hybrid-working rules in place – and lead by example. If you do work from home, make sure you’re still visible. Don’t assume that if you work hard and keep your head down, senior people will notice you. Book in 15-minute catch-up calls with your manager. Be more vocal than usual when
you’re on Zoom. Wear a bright colour that will make you pop out from the screen. Overcompensate.’
