"Our Kiwanis of Carefree pancake breakfasts are a favorite local attraction." Pancake breakfasts are held twice a year, fall and spring in the Town Center of Carefree. More than 250 people attended the last breakfast held.
"They offer good food at good prices, creating a good time to support our many good community services. They [Kiwanis] raise about $8,000 each year to support our various community organizations," Kiwanis stated. When the breakfasts began about 12 years ago, they were tied to the Fiesta Day Parade – the only local event that drew a lot of outsiders. Now pancake breakfasts are an event on their own, with other local organizations arranging information booths around the area. The Kiwanis added: "We welcome this intra-community involvement because good neighborhood organizations should support each other." Celebrate the grand opening of Maricopa Park's new nature-themed playground at Lake Pleasant

PEORIA - After a year of planning and building, Maricopa County Parks Department is rolling out the sidewalk and inviting everyone to come and play at Lake Pleasant Regional Park for the grand opening of the new naturethemed playground. The celebration takes place on Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In 2009, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation System Master Plan that envisioned county parks playing a critical role in connecting and reconnecting people with nature. One vital component of the plan was to ensure the county parks truly represented Arizona’s unique Sonoran Desert environment.
But, how does a parks agency that is located in the “fastest-growing county in the U.S.” connect people with nature when the amount of available open space located in urban areas is shrinking? “You get very creative,” said R.J. Cardin, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department Director. “It made sense for us to look for playground pieces that blended with the landscape while providing youth with a safe place to explore their natural surroundings when we began redesigning our playground systems." Cardin says that "instead of seeing the traditional climbing pieces in our parks, you’ll now see Tarantula rockwalls and cactus climbers.” Over the past five years, the parks department has been removing outdated playground systems and installing new nature-themed playgrounds in their regional parks. In 2016, the tired playground system located in the Roadrunner Campground Area at Lake Pleasant Regional Park was dismantled. “At the same time the playground was being removed, the Discovery Center was
receiving a complete makeover,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisor Clint Hickman, District 4. “The Discovery Center is the hub for visitor activity. Relocating the playground to this area will help visitors enjoy all of this in one place.” At the new playground kids will find a larger than life Bald Eagle climber with double slide and nets, and a brightly colored Gila Monster rock climber with a roller slide. "We’ve also included a Cottonwood tree climber, Desert Tortoise and spiderweb climbers, and red hawk topped spinner under a massive shade structure to help keep the kiddos from overheating,” added Cardin. Lake Pleasant Regional Park is located at 41835 N. Castle Hot Springs Road. Castle Hot Springs Road is located roughly near Mile Marker 19 on the Carefree Highway (Hwy. 74). To learn more about the playground grand opening, visit bit.ly/2MC7qsV.For information about activities at a county park near you, call (602) 506-2930 or visitmaricopacountyparks.net.

Around the Bluhmin’ Town
Remembering Kayla
BY JUDY BLUHM
PhoenixMomBlog.com
Facebook.com/TheFoothillsFocus
The monster is dead. Thanks to the U.S. military special operations raid in Syria, ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was eliminated. He was responsible for the torture and death of so many innocents, including Kayla Mueller, our hometown young woman who set out to make a difference in the world. And she did. Kayla seemed to know from an early age that she would work tirelessly to help the poor, sick and suffering people of the world. She was clear on her purpose, committed and devoted to her mission. America grieves for Kayla because she represented the best part of us. The pop culture we live in easily sweeps young people into self-absorption and an obsession to share every mundane moment on social media. Money, fame and attention have
too often replaced character, faith and self-esteem. And then we are given the gift of a woman named Kayla to remind us of everything that is good in humanity. She believed that the strong could help the weak, and that life is immeasurably better when we give unselfishly to those in need. Kayla changed me, and probably you. And just about everyone she touched, which were people in several continents and countries. That it all ended so badly is hard to get out of our minds. The agony that her parents and family have experienced these past years is simply unimaginable. The strength of Kayla’s beliefs and character are beyond our comprehension. If we read her letter written in captivity it seems not possible that someone at such a tender age could pen such wisdom. Then there are those words from Kayla. “Even in prison I can be free.” Or, “I have no fear.” Her resolve is quite astonishing. How did a woman so young become so strong? We must look to her parents and loving family who obviously instilled a great deal of faith in a child who grew up to accomplish so much. There are too many lingering unanswered questions about exactly what happened to Kayla. We pray for answers!
Her parents deserve to bring Kayla home. In 2015 we lit a candle. Let’s do it again. We will continue to let the light of Kayla and her selfless work for the downtrodden show us the way to a meaningful life. Through the horror of her captivity and torture, she remained strong and compassionate. Her actions give hope to those of us who have problems that overwhelm us, or illness that feels like conquering us, or problems that seem to be beating us. She modeled courage and strength, in the darkest of circumstances, showing how each of us have the ability to form our own inner sanctuary. America is a nation of givers and we are a state of doers. So, in the spirit of Kayla, we will carry on and feed a hungry child, comfort the sick, rescue an animal, help with the less fortunate, donate our time, energy, money and skills to pay it forward to those in need. She is an angel, still inspiring us. We remember Kayla. Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local realtor. Have a comment or a story? You can email Judy at judy@ judybluhm.com.

non-profit organization that serves the homeless population, was given Arizona’s District 8
Congressional Recognition by the Office of Congresswoman Debbie Lesko. “Whether it’s mobile shower services, haircuts, or hot meals, Trevor’s Vision is focused on meeting the needs of the homeless in the Valley,” Rep. Lesko said. Jeff Kistler was presented with the recognition by a representative from the congresswoman’s office last week. Kistler, a retired Air Force veteran, started Trevor’s Vision to give back to the homeless population through meals, clothing, laundry services and even showers. “To achieve their mission, Trevor’s Mission relies solely on volunteers and donations and operates at zero cost. No money, no lights: Shutoff of senior woman’s electricity leads to calls for reform
About 30 protesters marched around the Arizona Corporation Commission building in Phoenix before an early September meeting on APS shutoff policy. (Photo by Jake Eldridge/Cronkite News) BY BARBARA SMITH CRONKITE NEWS
PHOENIX – “How do you feel knowing that someone died because of one dollar?” Arizona Corporation Commissioner Sandra Kennedy asked that question of Donald Brandt, chief executive of utility company Arizona Public Service, as he sat at before the commission. APS has been under public scrutiny since the Phoenix New Times broke a story in June about a Sun City woman who died after her electricity was disconnected for nonpayment in the summer of 2018.
Brandt replied that if Pullman had called APS, the company would not have shut off her electricity. For weeks, demonstrators, advocates and representatives from the electricity provider have come before the commission to plead their cases about what’s right not only for them, but for APS and other utility customers. There is no state standard on how and why a customer’s utilities are cut off. The corporation commission is considering reforms for the 16 electricity providers it oversees. It’s working with
veterans representatives and advocates for the aging, as well as utility companies, on proposed reforms that may restrict disconnections or put a moratorium on disconnections during the summer months. After the New Times story was made public, the company began a moratorium on shutoffs that ended Oct. 15. Stephanie Pullman died in her home on a 105-degree day in 2018 after falling behind on her bills. She had made a partial payment to APS but it was too late.
It’s unclear how much she Pullman owed, but Kennedy said if she just had paid about a dollar more, her electricity would not have been disconnected. APS officials said they have settled the case with Pullman’s family. In one heated daylong meeting, an activist for veterans urged the commission to take action. “You’re the only protection for all of us,” said Barry McCain, who represents Arizona veterans with disabilities. He stressed how many of his fellow veterans have fallen on hard times and feel they aren’t getting the proper support. The session came a month after APS executives were asked how many people died in the heat and what methods APS used to notify people who risked disconnection for nonpayment. That meeting led to the calls for reform on shutoffs. Proposals vary in degree and consequence. One idea the commission has suggested is to suspend shutoffs once temperatures hit 95. APS suggested 105. “105 degrees is unacceptable for Arizona, and we can’t use other states as our point of information,” said Kennedy, who has been an outspoken critic of the company’s procedures. “Arizona stands alone.”

In 2018, Phoenix had 128 days in which temperatures topped 100 – the second most on record. APS officials also were asked about how they issue final notices for customers who are close to losing power. Under APS procedure, a utility worker leaves a written notice at the residence but does not speak with the customer. Critics said notices can be missed, removed or blown away. “We would like to see a safety visit when someone’s power is going to be terminated,” said Stephen Jennings, associate state director for AARP Arizona. “We think that the utilities should knock on the door and make sure it won’t endanger their safety.” Such safety visits would ensure there is person-toperson contact and that the customer understands when and how their power will be shut off, and how it can be reconnected, Jennings said. Reforms won’t come easily, industry representatives said. The corporation commission oversees large utilities, including APS and Tucson Electric Power, but also more than 10 smaller electricity companies. The bottom line: Kennedy said it may take up to a year for a new policy to take shape.

storyteller who promotes cultural competency. “I will say that ignorance happens all the time, but I think it’s 2019 and schools can do better at teaching their students how to be better human beings. A recent Canyon Athletic Association state tournament girls volleyball match was halted after racial gestures and slurs from Caurus Academy fans were directed at players from Salt River, a school located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. There are conflicting reports about what occurred and to what degree, but Randall Baum, executive director of the CAA, an association that oversees non-traditional educational institutions, acknowledged that “something did happen. Concern about racism directed at Native Americans have permeated the sports world. Several weeks ago, Ryan Helsley, a St. Louis Cardinals reliever and a member of the Cherokee Nation, criticized the use of the “Tomahawk Chop, a fan cheer popular with Atlanta Braves fans. The Washington Redskins’ team nickname and logo is the subject of an ongoing debate. When the team visited the Arizona Cardinals home stadium in 2014, hundreds of Native Americans protested outside, while others showed their support for team owner Daniel Snyder. Arizona is home to approximately 300,000 Native Americans, according to the U.S. Census. In the past decade, at least 52 incidents of racial harassment directed at Native American athletes, coaches and fans have been recorded in the United States, reports High Country News after compiling data from news articles, federal reports and court documents. That the recent issue involved high school-aged students seemed troublesome to many. “The Canyon Athletic Association and our member schools do not support racial discrimination in any form, Baum said in a statement issued after news of the incident went
viral on social media. To date, no action has been taken against the Caurus Academy, a public charter school located in Anthem, or against the school’s volleyball team or any school officials. However, the incident has prompted CAA officials to ask why it occurred and to form a committee that includes representatives from both schools to examine what steps can be taken to prevent similar behavior in the future. Walker said the taunting is indicative of issues bigger than sport and more needs to be done to address the larger societal issue of oppression of Native American people. “It’s easy to address, but it’s hard to acknowledge that you have an issue, said Walker, who suggested that a good place to start is by providing students more education about the history of Native American culture. Reportedly during the third set of the contest, Caurus fans began a mocking “war-whoop, stereotypically associated with Native Americans. Some also reportedly yelled “savages at Salt River’s players. Walker said Salt River coach Kyronna Roanhorse and her assistant coaches witnessed the gestures, which they described as “disgusting. After the coaches notified referees about the taunting, tensions in the building began to raise. Roanhorse decided to remove her team from the court during the middle of the fourth set because of the offensive taunts out of concern for the safety of her players. “Our students and our coaching staff felt unsafe in that gym, Walker said. “All parties agreed that the game be continued at a later date. The members of the administrations at both schools met with the CAA to determine how to proceed, and the match was completed at a neutral site last Friday with Caurus prevailing in five sets. The CAA reportedly looked into the incident and did not place blame on anyone other than the fans and decided that there would be no sanctions handed down. The decision

went widely criticized among social media users. After the match was concluded at a neutral location, a video surfaced on social media that showed the Salt River girls crying as they went through the ceremonial post-game high five with their opponents. However, many assumed the video was from the part of the match played earlier and that the girls were reacting to the taunting. Walker said the video showed the emotional response the players had because their season had just ended. So far, no video of the taunting has surfaced. Several Caurus parents and others expressed their support for the team at the school’s regular board meeting Monday. “I am so proud of these girls
who stepped out on the court in an extremely difficult situation on Friday, Wendy Davison, Caurus’ principal said at the meeting. “They were composed, they were mature, they were great sports. Board member Kevin LaMountain noted the socialmedia backlash the academy received from the story. “This school has handled the hundreds, if not thousands, of negative comments through Facebook posts, he said. “The story went national. It’s not as though the comments that we’re getting are from 10 miles around this campus. They’re from tens of thousands of miles away. The

ALL ABOUT ARIZONA NEWS
A rare astronomical alignment known as a Mercury Transit will occur on November 11, and will be visible across almost all of North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Western Asia. A transit occurs when a planet passes directly between the Earth and the sun. They are rare and only happen about 13 times every 100 years. The next one will occur on Nov. 13, 2032. In order to see the transit, spectators will need the proper solar filter to safely look at the sun, as well as cloudfree weather. Looking at the sun without the proper protection can lead to permanent eye damage, including distorted vision or loss of vision all together. After the 2017 total solar eclipse, there were reports from people across the country that
their eyes hurt from looking at the sun. One woman even burned her retinas due to observing the event without protective eyewear. “This damage can be temporary or permanent and occurs with no pain. It can take a few hours to a few days after viewing the solar eclipse to realize the damage that has occurred,” Prevent Blindness explained on their website. Prevent Blindness is an organization that works to prevent blindness and preserve sight by informing the public. Onlookers will need specially made solar filters, such as eclipse glasses, to safely observe the Transit of Mercury. Interested people should order their solar filters now from a reputable vendor that meets the international safety standards so that they arrive in time. In order to see next month’s Mercury Transit, onlookers will

need more than just a pair of eclipse glasses. “Mercury is too small to see with your eclipse glasses and requires a safe solar telescope,” NASA said. “Only ever view the Sun through a telescope with a certified solar filter; otherwise you risk permanent damage to your eyes,” NASA added. It is very important to make sure that the solar filter is on the correct end of the telescope. Looking through an ordinary telescope or binoculars with only a pair or eclipse glasses over your eyes will not work. People that cannot get the proper viewing equipment in time can visit one of many astronomy clubs across the country holding a viewing event on the day of the Mercury Transit or watch the event online.

Design deeper than surface
BY SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST
Steve Jobs once reflected on the concept of design by saying, "In most people's vocabularies design means surface decoration, a veneer. To me nothing could be further from the meaning of design it's much deeper than that." In the world of designer and artist, Cynthia Eral, her design in for interior space involve the senses and expansive imagination. Cynthia grew up on a small Minnesota family farm in a home built in 1928. Her world was filled with adventures in the woods, camping by the river, gardening with her grandparents and enjoying the captivating colors and patterns of the changing seasons. Her parents presented her with her first oil painting kit when she was nine. With her mom as a creative example, Cynthia observed her as she managed the updating of their home with modern tastes, while maintaining the warm and charm of its original construction.
Throughout Cynthia's childhood she received painting lessons from area artists. She learned patience and new ways of challenging herself with a variety of materials and utilizing the concept that, "It was ok to be yourself." One of Cynthia's favorite artists is Jessie Wilcox-Smith. A piece of hers entitled "The Senses: Hearing," still hangs in Cynthia's home today as a reminder to enjoy the simple things in life. The move to Arizona came from an "adventure" Cynthia and her husband created for
themselves to "get out of the cold temperatures of the Midwest." They set off on a month long motorcycle trip with the goal of exploring the Western United States. With camera in hand and miles of highway and back roads to travel the couple ended up falling in love with the Sonoran Desert. It wasn't long before they decided to relocate and start a new life with a much warmer climate and more than 300 days of sun. Cynthia's career path took her into the world of design. Her first position was in visual merchandising and she never looked back. The opportunity to become involved with home design in Scottsdale was the catalyst that propelled Cynthia into creating her own art for clients. The need to customize a home to her client's personal preferences opened an opportunity for her to pick up her brushes and hit the canvas in very creative ways. During the design process Cynthia's team creates vignettes for clients to view and help them understand the importance of continuity of furnishing and color through out their home and design project. Over her 30 years of design experience Cynthia has created countless inspirational interiors for her clients homes; containing endless possibilities of creative interest. "The connection of art and home décor is powerful. It creates a mood, a special place,
even a destination for the soul. I want to work with clients to help create personal spaces that are a reflection of their own identities," Cynthia says about her work. The painting abilities Cynthia has picked up over the years has allowed her to customize her client's accent pieces even further with large and small paintings, interior and exterior murals and accessories she collects. Anything is possible for building that right mood. She is a member of the Sonoran Arts League and exhibits her work at the El Pedregal Gallery in North Scottsdale. She is also active with the Desert Foothills Land Trust Events, Plein Air gatherings and Audubon Society events. This November, she will exhibit her work in the annual
Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour at Studio #18. Her work is available for purchase locally at Bungalow Furniture, Tierra del Lagarto, Big Bronco, Rusty Shack and The Emporium in Yarnell. Cynthia also created animal cards to benefit Anthem Pets, which can be purchased at Anthempets.org, The Rusty Shack and Tierra del Lagarto. Cynthia is available for consultations at her studio in Cave Creek by appointment or her website Cynthia DesignAZ.com, on Instagram @cindybrushinhand, as well as through the Sonoran Arts League SonoranArts League.org. Movie Review
BY MONTE YAZZIE FILM CRITIC
A lone New York gumshoe exits the darkness of a side alleyway, a fedora casting a shadow over his eyes as steam rises from a manhole nearby. “Motherless Brooklyn,” directed, acted and written by Edward Norton, tackles the crime film noir genre with aggressive style and impressive performances. The group of exceptional actors are placed in roles that allow them to flex and chew the scenery in unique ways. It’s a movie that doesn’t often get made in today’s sequel-heavy, superhero influenced atmosphere. The fact that it understands film noir characteristics and narrative themes keeps this film thought-provoking and engaging throughout. In 1950s New York City, Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), sometimes known as Brooklyn and often self-described as Freakshow, works for a private investigation company run by Frank Minna (Bruce Willis).
Lionel is an orphan who grew up rough. Frank protected him when he was younger, keeping others from taking advantage of him. Lionel has a condition and says his “brain is all messed up,” which is accompanied by physical twitches and involuntary verbal bursts. But being in the investigation business, this condition has an advantage because Lionel has a photographic memory. Frank arranges a setup with a group of mysterious guys, bringing Lionel and another one of Minna’s Men (Ethan Suplee) along to watch his back. Things go bad and Frank is shot. Lionel must now piece together a scheme of corruption beyond the private sector, and into the realms of New York politics, greed and murder. “Motherless Brooklyn” is an interesting piece of noir cinema. It feels unusual yet refreshing to see a film like this on the big screen, which is where it should be seen. Edward Norton wearing the director’s hat, does a great job
of combining familiar genre characteristics from crime films of the past. He brings a shadowy and hazy atmosphere to New York City, while also showing the contrasting beauty of the city’s architecture and landscape; both in bright sunlight and the dark of night. It feels, in very specific moments, like John Alton’s style of noir composition with films like “T-Men” and “He Walked By Night,” with deep shadows and pinpoint lighting style. The cast is an ensemble of great actors who all contribute nicely with characters, some who control the screen with glee. Take for instance Alec Baldwin, who plays a forceful businessman in a politician’s disguise. Baldwin’s introduction in the film finds him bursting through doors, feet and fist stomping into a celebratory meeting that immediately stops. Minna’s Men, Bobby Cannavale, Ethan Suplee, and Dallas Roberts, have the fun task of playing the many different versions of noir detectives we’ve seen from the past. The tough guy, the playboy, the family man, each in search of different reasons for being a detective. Norton’s character is the most complex, the most intricate and the most unlike the standard stereotype found for this character. At one-point Lionel, seemingly shedding his persona to look like something more familiar, picks up a trench
coat, fedora and gun holster, putting on the uniform of the determined gumshoe. Norton is doing so much with the character, consistent twitching and verbal rhyming spells. Done with more flair than vulgarity, the spells become more prominent when he is agitated or, in the one instance, grooving to jazz music in a smoky night club. The narrative weaves a nice "who-done-it," but delves into over-explanation too often, with flashbacks that assist the mystery in ways the audience is already keen to. The primary story conflict is that of power, and throughout the film this aspect is what gives the movie its motion, keeping you engaged. This drives the film until the final act when it shifts into a story about the protection of the past, present and future. It works in pieces. “Motherless Brooklyn” is inspired by so many great

school has done a fantastic job at handling all of that. While the incident was only briefly discussed during the board meeting, it was the subject of several discussions among administrative teams from both schools and the CAA. Those sparked a conversation about diversity within the school system. The CAA is a governing body that facilitates athletic competition for “non-traditional educational institutions, in Arizona. The majority of the approximate 125 member schools fall under the category of charter, home school, or parochial institutions. Ultimately, all parties decided that a change was in order and the CAA announced steps it will take to prevent future incidents. “(The) CAA executive director will be organizing a committee to develop new policies surrounding cultural competence,

so that all members can benefit and the right resources are available to our membership, Baum said. The Salt River schools supported the proposal in a statement released last Thursday. “We are eager to participate on a new CAA committee to address racial discrimination with strong league policy, and we are confident everyone will learn and grow from this experience, the statement read. The Caurus statement made no mention of the committee, however. But Baum said he is ready to implement changes discussed in the various meetings and hopes everyone will learn and grow from an unfortunate situation. “The important thing we want our athletes, students, families, and our fans to leave this experience with is to trust that appropriate actions have been taken to mitigate and move forward, Baum said.
