A Glittering 200th Birthday Celebration for Henry Wickenburg WICKENBURG, AZ- Join us for a multi-day celebration honoring the 200th birthday of one of Arizona’s most influential pioneers, Henry Wickenburg. His legacy has not only shaped the town that bears his names, but the state of Arizona as well. Wickenburg was a German immigrant who discovered gold in 1863, which in turn established the Vulture Mine, one of the wealthiest gold mines in the territory. From the mine to his ranch, and throughout the Town of Wickenburg his adventurous spirit continues on in the charm of a true Western community.
This same spirit will be the heart of the celebration that begins on November 21, 2019 to celebrate Henry Wickenburg’s 200th birthday, on his birthday. The Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society, the Town of Wickenburg and a number of other organizations and sponsors are proud to present this celebration that will begin at 11 a.m. at the historic Henry Wickenburg House. Event commencements and honors will be presented to Mr. Wickenburg’s remaining relative,

WASHINGTON – The House voted 236-185 Wednesday to permanently ban uranium mining on just over 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon, on a largely party line vote in which each side accused the other of fear-mongering. Republicans said the bill would do little to protect the Grand Canyon while killing mining jobs and making the U.S. reliant on other countries – some hostile – for uranium for our power and weapons. But Democrats said the real threat is to the contamination threat the mining poses to a popular natural treasure and to
residents of the area, including tribes that live in and around the canyon. In a news conference after the vote, they called it a major step toward safeguarding spiritual and cultural lands. “In 2019, our Havasupai voices were heard after 30 years,” said Carletta Tilousi, a councilwoman for the Havasupai Tribe, said after the vote. The victory lap came hours after Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Prescott, blasted the bill during House debate as a threat to national security and to northern Arizona’s environment and economy. He claimed the bill would gut up to 4,000 jobs and cost the state $29 billion in economic activity.
“This has nothing to do with the Grand Canyon. This has everything to do with monopolization and removing part of the segment that we promised future generations,” Gosar said. Gosar also accused Democrats of using Native American tribes and the public as “pawns” by suggesting that the bill would affect the park itself. “It’s sad when we use them as pawns,” Gosar said on the floor of the House. “When we have a press conference and they don’t even know what they’re coming to the press conference

My home is my castle! Isn’t that how we’re all supposed to feel? When we arrive at our abode after a busy day, we’re entering the comfort zone. The one safe haven in a hectic world - that’s our su casa. The place may not be a palace, it could be a continuous work in progress, but it’s that one spot in the entire universe where the earth spins a little slower and the stars shine slightly brighter. Home sweet home. Sitting one morning on the sofa, I gazed out through the arcadia doors at the patio. In an instant, my sense of security and safety was shattered. Imagine my shock when I noticed the head of a reptile looking back at me! That’s right, the little slithering beast was staring in
the window at me. At first I couldn’t see a body attached to the head. I wondered, was it a giant lizard? The beady eyes of this headless monster fixed on me across the room. Cautiously, I tiptoed over to the glass door and saw the long, frightening body of a big snake. Hey, isn’t this the season when all snakes go into holes and hibernate? Every now and then, our “home sweet home” hits a sour note. Around here it’s usually because of things that crawl on their belly and come out especially at night or early in the morning. It’s not that these critters don’t belong here; it’s just that they make me wonder if I do. There’s something downright unsettling about sipping coffee, reading this fine paper, and having a big yellow snake glaring at you with a menacing tongue darting back and forth. Did I mention that I ate a rattlesnake once? It actually was pretty tasty. I looked back at my bold intruder, thinking that he could make a tantalizing appetizer for my next gathering. Wouldn’t my guests be thrilled if I served up a nice platter of “diamondback morsels” stuck with little toothpicks? Oh, but I
digress. I was talking about how our home is supposed to be our safe haven from all things (and critters) mean and frightful. Well, perhaps we should make our homes more like forts. A sixfoot moat around the perimeter would keep a few reptiles away. But then I’d miss the lizards, cousins of those pesky snakes. I have a few that live their entire lives on our patio, scurrying from plant to shrub. They love to hang magically on the side of the walls, much like an artificial bronzed art deco. The UPS man was quite disturbed when he rang my doorbell and discovered that the lizard he had just touched was real. He screamed like a girl and practically threw the package at me! Beware, Dear Readers, of slithering giants with rattling tails and hissing tongues. Stay alert and safe. Oh, if you want to try a different appetizer for an upcoming Holiday party, fried “rattle-snack” served with ranch dressing is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local realtor. Are Real Estate Investments Right For You?
BY DEBORAH HARTWICK DIGNIFIED HOME LOANS
For most borrowers, the first step to real estate investing is the financing and specifically, the terms of the financing. Consider some of the following questions: How long do you intend to hold the property or mortgage? Do you need the lowest monthly payments or are you concerned about using the least amount of cash to close? There are also interest rates and points in the transaction which is why it’s important to have a mortgage loan officer by your side to help make sure you understand all the terms of your financing. Investment properties typically require a down payment of 1520% of the property price. If that money is difficult to attain currently, perhaps the best
way to start is by purchasing a property you will occupy first. For owner-occupied properties, the down payment can be as low as 3-5% of the property price. Did you know down payment funds could also be a gift from a relative? PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance) will be required due to the low down payment, however, with Conventional financing, the PMI will drop off when the mortgage is paid down to 80% of the purchase price, saving you money on your monthly payment. If you currently own a home, you may consider holding it, renting it out and then purchasing your next home with a down payment in the 5-10% range. You are able to rent your departure residence and 75% of the rental income may be used to offset the monthly payment you will still have if or when you are qualifying for a new home loan. Your 30 year fixed rate mortgage is your greatest asset as a homeowner and investor. We have all seen the increase in rents and home values since 2012. As rents and real estate prices continue to increase, your monthly mortgage payment (P&I) remains the same. Future

A quote from one nomination read, “Shadows of Ron’s vision will continue to impact others for generations to come, as his legacy and that of the Anthem community are forever intertwined.” The ACC created the Anthem Veterans Service Award in 2013. The award, presented annually to an individual or group to recognize “extraordinary service and selfless dedication in support of our nation’s veterans,” has become a staple of the Veterans Day Ceremony, held each November 11 at the Anthem Veterans Memorial. A plaque with the names of all recipients is on display at the Anthem Civic Building. Past winners, selected annually by the ACC Board of Directors based on nominations submitted from the community, include: Daisy Mountain Veterans (2013); Ray Norris (2014); Mary Ann Derryberry (2015); Elizabeth Turner (2016); Bob Hackett (2017) and John Simmons (2017); and Tom Kirk (2018).

Memorial. Military veterans and those currently serving from all five branches, as well as their families, were honored. The ceremony also recognized significant dates related to World War II. Current United States Army Reservist and Chief Warrant Officer Matthew Woodruff, and Arizona State University student Kyle Polen delivered inspiring speeches about the importance of service to others and country, and exercising rights Americans are afforded by those who serve. At the ceremony, Woodruff was reunited with World War II veteran Jim Galgano, whom he accompanied as a guardian on a 2017 Arizona Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Pastor Jessica Schulze of Anthem’s Grace North Church delivered the invocation, and Musical Theatre of Anthem and the Arizona Veterans Band performed special music. At 11:11 a.m., the sun shone through the five ellipses of the Armed Services branches and a spotlight was cast on the Great Seal of the United States; the moment was shown live and in real time on an LED screen for attendees to witness. Passion Prevails SHEA STANFIELD
It has been said, “The things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling.” Such is the case for local ceramic artist Paulette Galop. Growing up in Howell Michigan, a small farming community, Paulette’s mother was a gifted musician who could play any instrument by ear. She was Paulette’s first cheerleader into the world of creativity. Paulette took up playing the piano, sketching, painting, and working in ceramics at a young age continuing through high school. Eventually, working with ceramics was the medium that ignited her creative passion for creation. Paulette transformed this love of creating with the earth into a career as a potter. She became part of a co-op in San Diego making functional pieces for sale to the public. It wasn’t long before she saved enough money, from her job, to start college at the University of Colorado in a degree program focusing on the fine arts. Soon the desire to strike out on her own adventures took hold and Paulette turned her attention to traveling and collecting new experiences, one of which was to start a family. This eventually lead her to taking on a non-art career in retail. In 1996 Paulette
ended up in Arizona with her work and little did she know, at the time, she had stepped on the path that would lead back to her creative self. In early 2000, she went back to school enrolling in ceramic classes, with the intent of picking up her initial passion in functional ceramics, but the magic was gone, she no longer enjoyed that aspect of ceramics. Inadvertently, Paulette signed up for a hand building sculpture class and found renewed excitement in constructing with clay. The challenge to building large sculptural forms was technically complicated, she
soon developed a new passion for problem solving in her large sculptural pieces. Paulette soon built a home studio at her residence and began the new phase of her creative journey. Paulette draws her inspiration for being an active outdoors woman, hiking, riding her Clydesdales, and diving in the ocean. Land and sea experiences offer a variety of inspiring ideas for large sculptural pieces. She makes optimum use of nature’s extensive textures, colors, and unique forms. Over the years Paulette has participated in numerous art shows, including

the ASU Ceramic Research Center Studio Tour and the Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour. This year you will find her at Desert Rat Forge #47 the last two weekends in November, www.sonoranartsleague.org. Several Galleries including the Fountain Hills Gallery in Fountain Hills, The Gallery at El Pedigral in North Scottsdale and On the Edge Gallery in Old Town Scottsdale also represent her works. Paulette has won several juror’s awards and has published in The National Emerging Artists Catalog 2013. Area volunteer work is also a passion, Paulette donates her ceramic masterpieces to the Empty Bowls Hunger Project, each year, in connection with the Sonoran Art League to benefit the Desert Foothills Food Bank. She also loves opportunities for continuing education class and workshops, as well as, working with other artists on collaborative projects. Paulette also looks forward to expanding her talents into working with youth projects. ALL ABOUT ARIZONA NEWS
PHOENIX - Nikola Motor Company, a Phoenix motor/ vehicle designing company has signed on for $1 million to test a fuel cell for the all-electric vehicle it has built for military use. This vehicle is called “Reckless.” In an online press release last week, it was announced that the project for Reckless, designed for off-highway driving, was scheduled to last 32 weeks. The Department of Defense is also involved with the planning. “This is truly a groundbreaking effort in our quest to have a zero-emission future,” Andrew Christian, vice president of
defense for Nikola Powersports, said in a statement last week. Nikola will work with Pratt and Miller Engineering on the $4.35 million venture to “to integrate hydrogen fuel cell technology in an electric offroad vehicle,” Christian said. Reckless was built to be operated remotely and has an on-board drone and weapons station. Nikola closed on a deal for over 2,5000 acres in Coolidge to build a new manufacturing plant earlier this year. The plant is expected to open by 2023 and create about 2,000 jobs by 2024.

It’s personal: Team Terravita Walkers raised $2,600 for Parkinson’s. (L-R) Carol Creekman, Captain Cathy Boss-Fessel, Kathy De Marco, Anne Prine. Unable to attend: Team members Terry McNeice and her two grandchildren.
NORTH SCOTTSDALE – On Saturday, November 9, hundreds of people gathered at Kiwanis Park in Tempe for the first annual, Valleywide “Moving Day Phoenix” event that raised almost $75,000 to combat Parkinson’s Disease (PD). North Scottsdale’s Team Terravita Walkers, with seven members, raised more than $2,600 to place second in donations for the event out of 44 teams. The Parkinson’s Foundation charity fundraiser celebrates movement, which is proven to help manage PD symptoms. The Foundation’s mission is to make life better for people affected by PD by delivering quality care, funding cutting-edge research and providing free resources to patients and their families. “For me and the team, participating in Moving Day is personal,” said Terravita Walkers Team Captain Cathy Boss-Fessel. “All of us at the event have or had family members affected by PD. I walk to honor the memory of my late father, Jerry ‘Boss Man’ Boss, who lived with Parkinson’s for many years.” “In Arizona the Parkinson’s Foundation has invested almost $400,000 in research to better understand PD and improve patient care,” said Robin Rhea, Parkinson’s Foundation development manager. “Funds raised will help support, among others, the Phoenix-based
Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence. “For everyone with PD, an accurate diagnosis is critical because treatments and resources are available to help patients live a better life with the disease. It’s also important for U.S. veterans to know that many with PD can qualify for veterans’ benefits.” Since 2011, Moving Day events across the country have gathered more than 130,000 participants and raised nearly $22 million. Moving Day celebrates movement with a familyfriendly walk course; audience participation movement activities including boxing, exercises, dance and song; a caregivers relaxation tent and more. Sponsor booths offer free product, service and resource information. Details of the 2020 event will be announced in coming months. Affecting nearly one million Americans and 10 million people worldwide, PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s. It is the 14th leading cause of death in the United States. In Arizona there are an estimated 18,000 people with PD who are age 45 or older. The Parkinson’s Foundation, founded in 1957, has achieved a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities.

for. That’s sad. America, wake up.”The bill’s lead sponsor, Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Tucson, called Gosar disrespectful for suggesting tribes that had spent decades fighting new uranium mines in the region did not know what was at stake. “To make those comments is not only insulting to all of us, but particularly mean to the people who have been fighting this fight for so long,” Grijalva said. He rejected arguments that the bill would hurt Arizona’s mining industry, saying it is time to stop “rehashing the same wornout arguments.” “The idea that we need to mine around the Grand Canyon to meet our energy needs is false,” Grijalva said during debate. “There is ample data to show it, and national security and nuclear nonproliferation experts have routinely raised the alarm this fear mongering about supplies is based on fantasy.” Grijalva was joined by Arizona Democratic Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick of Tucson, Tom O’Halleran of Sedona and Greg Stanton of Phoenix, in cheering the proposal as a way to protect the Colorado River. Grijalva pointed to mines on both the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon that he said contaminated millions of gallons of water before they produced ore. Former Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar in 2012 imposed a 20-year moratorium

on new uranium and other hardrock mining permits 355,000 acres in the Kaibab National Forest, more than 600,000 acres owned by the Bureau of Land Management, and nearly 24,000 acres where ownership is split between private owners and the federal government. The House bill would make that moratorium permanent, if it is passed by the Senate and signed into law by the president. Critics called both steps unlikely, but Grijalva said Wednesday he is optimistic about the bill’s chances in the Senate. Critics include Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson, who said he sees no negative impacts from uranium mining on the area – but a big downside from not mining. “People want to talk about climate change and carbon footprints. Nuclear reactors are carbon-free, and bring a lot of inexpensive power that people have come to rely on,” he said.

Johnson, who has testified previously before committees on the bill, said uranium mining in the Grand Canyon is vital to national security and clean energy development. “We have the richest uranium deposits here in Arizona,” he said. “Without being able to mine that, we’re totally dependent upon foreign uranium to run our nuclear reactors and our ships at sea and all the things that we need for our military.” But Kevin Dahl, Arizona senior program manager for the National Parks Conservation Association, said there is too much at stake in mining that close to the Grand Canyon to even take the chance. “The risk is too great. Mining companies have forever said, ‘There will be no impact,’ and, ‘We’ll clean this up,’” Dahl said.

Desert Foothills Theater Events for December and January SCOTTSDALE - The Desert Foothills Theater (DFT) announces several productions and events for this December and January/February 2020. The “Honk! Jr.” audition workshop for ages 8 to 18 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with auditions on Dec. 7. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, “Honk! Jr.” tells the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother. Soon after Ugly is born, he is seduced away by a wily Cat who wants to eat Ugly for dinner. Performances of “Honk! Jr are Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 14-15 and Feb. 21-22 at 7 p.m. and Sundays, Feb. 16 and 23, 2 p.m. in the DFT’s Blackbox Theater, 33606 N. 60th St., Scottsdale, 85266. Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” is opening Jan. 17. “And Then There Were None” tells the story
of ten people who were lured onto Indian Island by a man named U. N. Owen. Once all ten people were in the house on the island, the story picks up when someone is poisoned. Will they discover who it is or will everybody die before they can figure it out? “And Then There Were None” plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17-18 and Jan. 2425, and on Sundays at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 26. Performances will be held in the DFT Blackbox Theater and tickets are $25. “We are grateful to Phyllis and Peter Strupp, our season sponsors” says Vicki Chamoff, interim managing director of the Desert Foothills Theater. The award-winning Desert Foothills Theater has been presenting live performances in the far north valley since 1975. Daisy Mountain Fire District was formed in 1989 to serve the residents of New River and Desert Hills. In 2003 the district grew to include the unincorporated community of Anthem, and again in 2017 to include Black Canyon City. Today, DMFM spans two counties, and protects a population of about 55,000 residents. The district covers approximately 210-square-miles and is served by five fire stations. Its service area includes a dangerous 35-mile-long stretch of Interstate 17 from about Carefree Highway to north of Sunset Point. Photo courtesy of Karen Alexander

Pet of the week: Zoro ANTHEM – Zorro is a fearless adventurer! He loves to lurk in his lair under the bed and wait for unsuspecting prey to walk by. No fly will ever pester un-challenged and un-pounced upon where Zorro bravely treads! But underneath all this bravado, Zorro is just a big tender heart! (Shh! He gets embarrassed easily! Also, he is self-conscious about his big ears. Kindly don’t mention them.) But once Zorro’s adventuring is done for the day, he oves a snooze cuddled up with his brother Nacho, or next o his favorite human. He is sure to win your heart with his dashing heroics! Zorro is neutered, litter box trained, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $85 and he is ready for his forever home. Find Zorro on anthempets.org. or fill out an adoption matchmaker form on anthempets.org under resources or call 480-287-3542.
