JON COFFELT COSMOS TRANSITION The Foundation Gallery 2014
About the Artist The Foundation Gallery is pleased to present Cosmos Transition, a new series of paintings by Jon Coffelt. The exhibition will be on view from October 30 – December 23, 2014. An opening reception will be held October 30 from 6 – 9 pm. 25% of proceeds from the show, as well as the gallery shop, will be donated to BreakOut! a local non-profit seeking to foster a safer and more just New Orleans for LGBTQ youth. Cosmos Transition continues in the tradition of Coffelt’s intricate, soothingly cohesive body of work. The pieces are at once celebratory and meditative. The repetition of shape and color creates a hum that is approachable despite its complexity. In the artist’s own words, "What I'm dealing with is space and proportion, and the idea of pulling a person inside of that. It's about meditation. I hope that people may get a picture of feeling, of being more centered. When I use bright, contrasting colors, I hope that people will find them soothing, very peaceful, very contemplative." The images are universal, but the artist’s hand, his willingness to allow his own unconsciousness to breathe through the colors and textures, is alive and explicit in the work. "What painters are trying to do, in the short and long run, is to allow you to visit a part of themselves internally that society in its usual conventions may not.”
allow you to visit a part of themselves internally that society in its usual conventions may not allow you to visit," says Coffelt "But painting is not about ego. It's about the absence of ego.” Coffelt has been fully immersed in the southern arts scene as a gallery owner, artist, and advocate for social change since the late 1980’s. His work transverses appropriation, book arts, collage, painting and sculpture. He has shown in over 50 solo exhibitions and 150 group shows around the world. Coffelt founded Alabama Art Monthly in Birmingham, Alabama in 1994. AAM was the state’s first gallery guide and Coffelt its first editor and publisher. From 1993 to 2001, Coffelt owned and operated AGNES with his partner, where he curated more than 80 exhibitions. AGNES opened its doors with a mission statement to raise public awareness about various social issues. Coffelt currently lives and works in New York City. He continues to make art and curate artists' book exhibitions independently for private, not-for-profit galleries and alternative venues. The Foundation Gallery is honored to work with Coffelt and BreakOUT! in the concerted effort to engage local communities and support social change through the arts.
