A student taking this test will be evaluated for the following parameters: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
IELTS Test Format
The test is usually conducted for 2 hours and 45 minutes. It has the following sectionsListening : 30 minutes + 10 minutes for transferring the answers that you wrote in the question paper booklet onto the answer sheet. Reading : 60 minutes Writing : 60 minutes 1/3
Speaking : 10-15 minutes. This part of the test may be conducted on the same day or within a week after the test. The following tips can help you prepare and pass the IELTS exam with flying colors:
⦁ Be thorough with your vocabulary Students are advised to build their vocabulary by reading as much as possible. The more words the students are exposed to, the better their vocabulary becomes. As you are reading, pay attention to the words that are new to you and you don’t understand, mark those words with a highlighter. Try to figure out the meaning of those words concerning the context and later on look them up in a dictionary for the meaning. Once you have learned the meaning of the word, try to use it in a sentence. This will help you to speak English fluently.
⦁ Try to enhance your writing skills Make sure that you practice your writing skills while preparing for the IELTS exam. Also, make sure that you never write answers below the given word limit and practice timing your writing as it is a crucial factor for this test. When writing, describe in detail about the given topic and if any diagram is given, describe the information regarding the diagram and not the diagram itself. Students will have to analyze the question thoroughly and make a paragraph plan before they start writing the answer. Check that all parts of the question have been answered and keep enough time in hand for editing your writing.
⦁ Practice pronunciations and fluency The speaking section of the IELTS test is divided into 3 sub-divisions-structured interviews, a short talk, and free interview. The students will be asked around 2-3 questions on familiar topics for about 5 minutes in the structured interview. The student will be required to give a brief talk for about 2 minutes in the short talk section and will be provided about 1-2 mins to prepare. For fluency, practice talking for long durations. If required, stand in front of a mirror and talk aloud so that you can hear yourself pronouncing the words. Next, record yourself talking on various topics so that you can listen to them and make corrections if there are any. For pronunciations listen to the news/radio or try watching films on TV.
⦁ Practice on listening skills Students have to keep in mind that they get to hear the recording only once. So, when you are practicing, do not keep pausing the recording. Listen to the typescript once again make a note of all the useful expressions. Try listening to the news in English every morning and write down all the important things to analyze them later. Make sure that you know what is required for each task and check the instructions thoroughly. 2/3
