Chances are if you’re walking around Fernie on any given day you’ll run into at least one four legged friend.

Dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds can be seen prancing around absolutely everywhere in town.

Well behaved pooches on leashes are welcome in most outdoor and public places in Fernie while there are plenty of off leash options for when the doggo really needs to stretch their legs. Between the endless trails and mountain paths and the plethora of outdoor, off leash areas, Fernie is every dog’s very best daydream. One of the best off leash options in Fernie can be found at the north end of Annex Park. Since there’s not a ton of signage at the park, it’s often overlooked. Although there’s no fence surrounding the park, it is bordered by the river along one side meaning it’s the perfect spot for dogs who love to frolic around in the water. Parts of the river are shallow enough for a quick swim, while the middle of the river can move quite swiftly so owners are urged to be aware of the hazards.

Another great spot to let the pooches run is next to the Fernie Aquatic Centre. This park is also not fenced or signed but you’ll be able to recognize it by all the happy dogs running free around the area. This spot has benches and shade and water if you become tired just watching fido run laps. Another great option is the Fernie Railyard Dog Park, which can be found in the green space between 4th Avenue and 13th Street, just past the train tracks. This park is a multi phase project with upgrades and fencing being added over a five year period. It currently has paved paths perfect for a stroll with your pooch. Although there are many options for dogs and owners to have off leash fun in town, there are also plenty of dog friendly trails outside of the city limits. Remember that not all trails are off leash and it’s important to check before heading out for the day. As a general rule of thumb, multi use trails in the area allow dogs to be off leash.

The only outdoor places you can’t bring your four legged friend are the school grounds, Rotary Park and Ridgemont park, since these playground areas are for children and not dogs.
