Zohra Mahomed
Zohra’s journey began in the early 1970’s, newly married, but with a firm belief that the only way a woman; regardless of race, creed or religion ; would ever be able to break away from the patriarchy and shackles that society imposed on them would be through equal access to the doors of education. It was her passion for women’s rights that ultimately saw the birth of the Solly & Zohra Noor Foundation. Her first recollection was when a young girl came to her doorstep looking for work as a domestic worker. Her first question was, “why are you not in school?” The girl immediately replied that her family did not have enough money to pay for her school fees. The young girl was sent back, with money in her hand to pay for her final year in matric. From the sourcing of school textbooks to the provision of weekly meals at primary schools she always looked for new opportunities to make a difference.
