Dates to know for the General Election Most everyone understands the election is rapidly approaching. Make sure you’re aware of all the important dates coming up.
BY MITCH SMITH
Print Managing Editor Mitch.Smith@thegeorgeanne.com
October 12 - 30
Early voting began on October 12 but will continue until October 30.
October 24 (9 a.m.– 4 p.m.)
Saturday early voting is held for one Saturday. For Bulloch county voters, you can go to The Board of Elections and Registration Office, 113 North Main St., Suite 201 in the County Annex from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon.
October 30
This is the final day of early voting but be aware because
the final day of early voting is notorious for having long lines so try to go sooner if possible. This is also the last day to request an absentee ballot, also be aware that doing this last minute might not be the best idea because the mail can sometimes run into issues.
November 3
This is heavily anticipated Election Day, and if you plan to vote on this day please check mvp.sos.ga.gov which is where you can find your assigned precinct. After you know where you are supposed to go, schedule out your election day and make sure you make it to vote.

Statesboro making cuts to free COVID-19 testing BY EDEN HODGES
City Correspondent Eden.Hodges@thegeorgeanne.com
STATESBORO — The City of Statesboro and the East Georgia Healthcare Center plan on cutting down free COVID-19 testing at Luetta Moore Park as the demand for testing begins to slow. After a little over a month since opening up the site, the free COVID-19 testing offered at the park on Tuesdays and Thursdays will now only be operating one day a week, taking both drive-ups and walk-ins. Anyone can show up and be tested at Luetta Moore Park during their new hours on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon with no appointment needed. For more information call EGHC’s Statesboro office at (912) 764-9196

Student wellness goes weekly We hope students know that we know things are tough and the Wellness Ambassadors and the Office of Student Wellness & Health Promotion is available to help.” Michele Martin
Associate Director of Student Wellness and Health Promotion
BY DAVIS COBB
Correspondent Davis.Cobb@thegeorgeanne.com
STATESBORO — In lieu of their Health Hut project, Georgia Southern University’s Wellness Ambassadors will be hosting a new weekly program entitled Wellness Wednesdays to ensure students can remain informed and well. The Health Hut offered a similar opportunity to students, but in a more physical manner; throughout the semester, these tents would be set up at various locations around the university campus, answering questions and offering advice on health and wellness to anyone interested. With the looming threat of COVID and the social distancing guidelines in effect on campus, however, such a method isn’t as viable anymore, prompting the Wellness Ambassadors to opt for a more virtual format instead. “We hope students know that we know things are tough and the Wellness Ambassadors and the Office of Student Wellness & Health Promotion is available to help.” Said Michele Martin,
Associate Director of Student Wellness and Health Promotion. “We want students to know you can still interact with each other, it just looks a little different these days.” As its name suggests, the program will be hosted virtually every week over Zoom on Wednesdays, and will provide a way for students to maintain interaction with one another alongside various games and activities. In addition, each session will discuss topics related to personal wellbeing, such as sleep, time and stress management, mental health, and substance use. The first session of the program was recently held on October 14, and Martin had this to say about the results: “In a virtual setting, it takes a few weeks to make sure students are aware of the program. We hope more will join in soon!” Wellness Wednesdays will be held every Wednesday over Zoom from 6 to 7 p.m. Information about the next meeting will be posted on the Student Wellness and Health Promotion Twitter page, along with a QR Code for access to the meeting, sometime before next Wednesday.
Amid COVID-19, did more students withdraw from classes this fall? BY FERNANDA CAMACHO HAUSER
Correspondent Fernanda.CamachoHauser@thegeorgeanne.com
STATESBORO — The window to withdraw from courses this semester without academic penalties closed October 12, but did more students withdraw than in previous nonCOVID semesters? Compared to fall 2019, there have been 33 more complete withdrawals this semester which brings the
number up from 355 to 388. That’s a nine-percent increase year-over-year. There seems to have been a decrease in individual course withdrawals, however. 64 less individual course withdrawals this fall (4,415 withdrawals) compared to fall 2019’s 4,580 withdrawals. The numbers being used to compare the two years are from all three campuses as of October 19, provided by Jennifer Wise, director of communications.
“Majority” of alumni and donors affected in May ransomware attack Blackbaud won’t tell the university, or The George-Anne, how many people were affected in the hack BY ANDY COLE
Editor-in-Chief Andy.Cole@thegeorgeanne.com
STATESBORO — Following an attack on a Georgia Southern software vendor, Blackbaud, in May, GS says a “majority” of alumni and donors had their names, social security numbers and donor profiles stolen. According to a letter sent to those affected, the hackers took a backup of the data Blackbaud stored and attempted to encrypt the files to force Blackbaud to pay the ransom. They did and received confirmation that the hacked files were destroyed. “There is no reason to
Page designed by Madison Terry
believe any data was or will be disseminated, misused or otherwise made available publicly,” wrote Trip Addison, vice president of university advancement in a letter sent to those affected. In response, GS has removed all social security numbers from Blackbaud’s database and Blackbaud has since identified the vulnerability and fixed it. The university is unaware of how many people were affected through this hack, according to Jennifer Wise, director of communications. All GS knows is that it affected the “majority” of alumni and donors. In an email to The George-
Anne, Blackbaud wouldn’t say how many people were affected in the hack citing the privacy of their customers. Blackbaud sent links to a statement on their website, three articles from The NonProfit Times and said they wouldn’t comment further. GS says anyone who received the letter should read it carefully, follow the instructions and call the number listed should they have any questions. GS has also provided identity monitoring services for one year for all affected. That service includes credit monitoring, fraud consultation and identity theft restoration.
There is no reason to believe any data was or will be disseminated, misused or otherwise made available publicly.” Trip Addison
