ELON UNIV. Q U I C K FA C T S
• Elon has scored 21 or more points in each of the last five meetings against the Eagles. • This year marks Elon’s 91st year as a football program. • Elon head coach Jason Swepson is the 20th head coach in program history. • Eagle Head Coach Jeff Monken is the reigning SoCon Coach of the Year. • In 2007, the Eagles held Elon to Lindsay Hartmann/The George-Anne
Senior offensive lineman Blake DeBartola (77) prepares to snap the ball back in his quarterbacks hands on command. Offensive lineman sophomores Logan Davis (74) and Garrett Frye (58) along with junior offensive tackle Doriah Byrd (71) and senior tight end Tyler Sumner (88) assemble along the line of scrimmage to protect the offense.
Tiebreaker to be determined BY JANNAH BOLDS The George-Anne staff
Both the Eagles of Georgia Southern University and the Phoenix of Elon University will fight claw-to-claw for a five-year-series tie-breaker this weekend with both teams winning three of six games. The Eagles cinched the last two meetings between the teams, winning 41-14 in 2011 and 38-21 in 2010. The biggest advantage that Elon has going into this game is that they will have a senior quarterback, Thomas Wilson. Last year, Wilson led the Southern Conference in passing yards and was ranked 13th in the nation after putting up 3,057 passing yards. He threw 23 passing touchdowns, which tied for the most in the Southern Conference for Page designed by Kelsey Paone
2011. Today, Wilson will have a receiver who burned the Eagle defense last year. Senior Aaron Mallette had nine catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Although the Eagles outrushed their opponent last season, Elon’s passing numbers have been superior in the last two games. In 2010, the Phoenix covered 193 more yards than the Eagles with 322 total passing yards. So far this year, the Eagle defense has held opponents to an average of 215 yards of total offense per game. Elon’s defense has been giving up an average 295 total yards. Also in last season’s game, the Eagles managed to rush significantly more than the Phoenix. GSU rushed a total of 60 times for 300 yards while the Elon offense rushed only 19 times for 54 total
yards. In 2011, Elon got picked off three times, but they still gained 92 more passing yards than the Eagles and threw the ball a staggering 38 times, showing the phoenix prefer to fly. Last year, junior halfback Robert Brown was effective against Elon, rushing for 116 yards on 11 carries and scoring a touchdown. Sophomore running back Dominique Swope ran for 74 yards for a touchdown, and he also caught a 12-yard pass for his first multi-touchdown game of his career. The Eagles are averaging 432 rushing yards per game and the triple-option is not something that Elon has faced this year. The Phoenix are 1-5 at Allen E. Paulson stadium, and the Eagles are sure to rely on their rushing game once again.
19 rushing yards. • The Eagles set an NCAA record in 2008 for the largest 4th quarter comeback, they were down 31-3 with 11 minutes left against Western Carolina. • The 1989 National Championship team is one of only two teams in NCAA history to have a 15-0 perfect season.
