I’m someone who grew up in public housing. I’m the 11th of 12 kids in my family and the first college graduate. That came from hard work, grit, and determination—but that’s not all. Somebody gave me a Pell Grant, a low-interest student loan, and a path to become a productive citizen. I’m running for Senate because across Georgia, it’s even harder to get by today than it was for my family. With your support, I’ll be a Senator who represents ALL the people of Georgia who Washington is leaving behind.” —Reverend Raphael Warnock

What’s the latest on the COVID-19 vaccine? Brian DeLoach, M.D., gave us the update BY FERNANDA CAMACHO HAUSER Correspondent Fernanda.CamachoHauser@thegeorgeanne. com
As of this week, two companies appear to be leading the charge to a COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer and Moderna. According to Brian DeLoach, M.D., medical director and staff physician, both companies have created a vaccine with reported high levels of success with the expectation that both companies will be filing for an emergency use authorization from the FDA. “The hope is that, if the vaccines have high efficacy in the population, and there is widespread acceptance of the vaccine among the population, then at some point population immunity will reach a level that will significantly reduce transmission of the virus and
the pandemic will end,” said DeLoach. This does not mean that the search for a vaccine is over, the world wide effort to find a vaccine is still ongoing even with the announcements of vaccines with higher levels of success. The Emergency Use Authorization is defined by the FDA as, “Unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products to be used in an emergency to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions caused by CBRN [chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear] threat agents when there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives.” In the last day, several news outlets have reported that Pfizer (who is working with BioNTech on a vaccine) will be
applying for the emergency use authorization from the FDA but the active list of emergency use authorizations on the FDA website has not yet shown this development. “There are some reports in the national media that vaccines will be distributed as early as before the end of this year, it is more likely that it will be sometime during the first half of 2021—exactly when is still unclear,” said DeLoach. “Although the details about distribution are also not clear at this time, there will probably be a tiered distribution from the federal government’s strategic national stockpile.” The vaccines themselves have so far been understood to work in slightly different ways with the Pfizer one being a two shot procedure, with an initial one and a booster shot a few weeks later. While the
Moderna vaccine would be a single shot with no follow up booster shot. With our community in mind both as Georgia Southern and as Statesboro the same goal of, “Achieving high levels of immunity[…]” applies. “Continue to be diligent in following public health measures to protect yourself and those around you: wear your face coverings, socially and physically distance, wash your hands frequently, stay home if you are sick,” said DeLoach. “As more definite news about the vaccine becomes available that will better inform the University’s plan for access to the vaccine, we will share that information with the University community,” DeLoach added.

On Monday, The GeorgeAnne opened up a google form to ask, “Did you practice social distancing and follow COVID guidelines last week?”. 81.8% of people said yes while 18.2% said no. We then left an open response section where we asked those same people to explain their answer.

Why does Georgia have runoff elections? BY FERNANDA CAMACHO HAUSER
Correspondent Fernanda.CamachoHauser@thegeorgeanne.com
We voted for president and vice president, sheriffs, senators, coroners and, for some of us, on other federal or local positions we didn’t know existed. We’ve kept up to date with the recount and all it entails. So why are we still hearing political ads and being told to keep voting? When it comes to voting someone into office, the candidate doesn’t just need more votes than the other candidates who are vying for the position. They need a certain predetermined number of votes in order to win office or a significant percentage more
over the candidate with the second most votes. Such as the magic 270 electoral votes for presidency and vice presidency. In Georgia, prospective senators must reach at least 50-percent to be elected. Since there were more than just two candidates running in the senate elections, no candidate reached the magic number. Because of this, runoff elections are slated for January 5. One race is between Senator David Perdue (I-R) and Jon Ossoff (D), while the other is between Kelly Loeffler (I-R) and Reverend Raphael Warnock (D) For this runoff election, the voter registration deadline is December 7. Early elections start on December 14 and the election is slated for January 5.

How to Navigate the Holiday Season During a Pandemic BY TATIANA JOSEPH-SANDERS Culture Reporter
As we approach the holiday season, it is completely reasonable and even expected for you to be worried about the pandemic. Sure, you may know the basic regulations and recommendations from health officials like social distancing and wearing a mask, but is there anything else? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently updated their site and their page speaking on holiday gatherings and small gatherings. On this specific page, a highlighted note is at the front… “More than 1 million COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States over the last 7 days. As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.” So, if you and your family are strictly following guidelines this year, you should only be spending the holidays with people you live with. This means no inviting extended family, or friends from school, or even family that lives near you guys.. Further into the site, you see the specific ‘considerations’ of the CDC:
“Please stay safe this holiday season, this virus does not just affect you if you’re positive, it affects everyone you come into contact with.” The community levels of COVID-19: This means taking
into account how COVID-19 is affecting your surrounding community. Whether or not you are spending Thanksgiving in a high-risk area, or if your area is going through a spike at the moment.
Exposure
during
travel:
This point focuses on the traveling aspect of the holiday season, and how risky those methods are during the pandemic. Airports, bus and train stations, gas stations and rest stops are places where travelers can easily pick up the virus.
The location and duration of the gathering: Indoor
gatherings paired with poor air ventilation raise the risk of contracting Covid, as well as
gatherings lasting longer than 15 minutes.
The number and crowding of the gathering: How many
people will be at the gathering and how well can they stay 6 feet apart? This is what the CDC is calling on people to think about when this holiday season.
Behavior of the attendees: The CDC is really
recommending hosts to take into consideration how well the guests have been adhering to Covid guidelines prior to gathering and also how they behave during the gathering. Gatherings that maintain safety measure have a less of a risk of spreading the virus.
What about the food and drinks at said gatherings? The CDC has thoughts for
those things too!
They recommended that hosts encourage guests to bring their own food and drink to minimize the spread. There should also be one person serving food with a mask, so there won’t be multiple people around the serving utensils, according to the CDC. One interesting thing that they mentioned that would have never crossed my mind was a recommendation for a notouch trash can for guest. Smart, right? The next section of the article goes over some questions those traveling for the holidays should consider; Does anyone you’re visiting has an increased health risk if they contract COVID-19? Are cases increasing where you’re leaving from or where you’re going to? Etc. Next in the article, there is a section on staying overnight during the holiday season. There are typical recommendations like utilizing the outdoors for gatherings and ensuring there’s efficient ventilation. Please stay safe this holiday season, this virus does not just affect you if you’re positive, it affects everyone you come into contact with.

Two Football Players Arrested The eagle football players being held in Bulloch county jail
BY DJ CADDEN
Sports Correspondent Robert.Cadden@thegeorgeanne.com
STATESBORO—Eagle football stars Wesley Kennedy III and CJ Wright were arrested on drugs and weapons charges Monday, according to jail records. Kennedy, a star running back for the Eagles, is facing multiple drug charges and a charge in relation to the possession of a weapon while committing or trying to commit a felony.
Wright, a standout defensive lineman, is charged with multiple drug offenses. Bond has not been set for either player as of Monday night. “We are aware of the situation, and are working with law enforcement officials to gather all of the facts,” Georgia Southern Athletics said in a statement to The George-Anne. Kennedy, a 2019 All-Sun Belt honorable mention, is the primary running back for the Eagles. Through eight
games of his senior campaign, he has accumulated 610 scrimmage yards and seven total touchdowns. Wright, a junior, had emerged as a star on the Eagle defensive line. In 2020, he has put up 32 total tackles including four for a loss. Just two days ago Wright put together his best game of the season when he accumulated 10 total tackles against Army. Georgia Southern currently sits at 6-3 and is set to take on Georgia State in Atlanta this Saturday.

STATESBORO—Eagle football’s Ephraim Kitchen Jr. and Chris Harris Jr. were arrested Tuesday on drug charges, according to jail records. Kitchen, a graduate transfer cornerback, was charged with possession of marijuana and has his bond set at $2,000. Harris, a senior cornerback,
was charged with possession of a schedule I controlled substance and has his bond set at $7,500. “Georgia Southern football players Chris Harris Jr., Wesley Kennedy III, Ephraim Kitchen Jr. and CJ Wright have been suspended indefinitely for violations of athletics department policies,” said Georgia Southern Athletics in a statement to The GeorgeAnne. The arrests come less
than 24 hours after Wesley Kennedy III and CJ Wright were booked in the Bulloch County Jail Monday for drug and weapons charges. The four arrests stem from the same case, according to WJCL Sports Director Frank Sulkowski. Harris had appeared in seven games and accumulated 11 total tackles in 2020, while Kitchen has yet to appear in a game for the Eagles this season.
extremely critical of offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse, who is in his third year at Georgia Southern. However, many fans are still skeptical to point the finger at anyone for Kennedy’s lack of usage. One thing is certain, if Georgia Southern wants to compete with the best of
the best, Wesley Kennedy III must be an integral part of the offense. While the other running backs have performed extremely well this season, Kennedy simply provides an energy to the offense that seemingly no other player can provide.
Georgia Southern star not happy with usage in recent games Arguably the Eagles’ best player tweeted his displeasure with his touches after Saturday’s loss BY DJ CADDEN
Sports Correspondent Robert.Cadden@thegeorgeanne.com
WEST POINT, NY—After a dogfight against Army that resulted in an extremely controversial Georgia Southern loss, many Eagle fans were understandably upset. Not only did this upset the fans, but star running back Wesley Kennedy III would voice his opinion on his recent usage in a string of tweets posted less than two hours after the game was completed. Kennedy tweeted, “I want to be used to my FULL POTENTIAL … I am a PLAYMAKER , USE ME!!”
This statement drew loads of attention from Eagle fans, players, and alumni. The response from those on the outside was almost unanimously on Kennedy’s side, as he is widely regarded as one of the most electrifying players in America. A little more than 45 minutes later, Kennedy tweeted again, “No selfishness intended to my last tweet. I want to WIN & TO DO IT AS A TEAM . It takes ALL 11.” The George-Anne reached out to Bryan Johnston, senior associate athletic director for communications, for comment

on Kennedy’s tweets. Citing the return trip back to Statesboro, Johnston didn’t have any comment. The lack of touches for Kennedy has puzzled every Georgia Southern fan and analyst as there seems to be no concrete reason as to why he is simply not getting the ball. For his entire career, Kennedy averages nearly eight yards a carry every time he touches the ball. If you only look at the 2020 season, this number jumps to over eight yards per touch, good enough for ninth in the nation. Many Eagle fans have been

Eagle mens basketball open 2020 season with a win Georgia Southern takes down Florida National in season opener BY DJ CADDEN
Sports Correspondent DJ.Cadden@thegeorgeanne.com
After a longer than normal offseason, Georgia Southern mens basketball made their long awaited return Wednesday with a 97-65 victory over Florida National. After a tumultuous offseason, which included hiring a new head coach and many transfers, the Eagles were able to put together a strong performance. The Eagles were lead by Elijah McCadden, who put up 13 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Boone, Kaden Archie, and Kamari Brown also hit the double digits mark in points. For Florida National, Jeffrey Hernandez accumulated an impressive 17 points and 8
rebounds. Kenneth Santos and Hirotaka Ohashi would also eclipse double digits for the Conquistadors. This win is the first of the Brian Burg era at Georgia Southern and his first ever as a head coach. When asked what was going through his mind after opening his career with a win, Burg said, “There is a lot of emotions. Anxiousness, nervousness, complete excitement, but I’m just extremely grate for the opportunity to be here at Georgia Southern and get win No. 1.” Georgia Southern now sets their attention on Saturday’s game against Coastal Georgia. Tip-off is currently set for 4 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.

Football Flight Delayed Eagle women fall in 2020 season opener The team and staff spent an extra 24 hours in Newark, New Jersey
BY DJ CADDEN
Sports Correspondent DJ.Cadden@thegeorgeanne.com
NEWARK, N.J.—After a devastating loss, most teams simply want to do one thing: go home and rest. For Georgia Southern, a handful of problems would ground the team in Newark. The Eagles would board their first plane hours after their game at Army, but the plane would be deemed unsafe for flight after a piece of equipment was identified as broken, according to Allegiant Airlines in a statement sent to The George-Anne “A replacement aircraft was
flown in from another state. Unfortunately, that aircraft experienced a mechanical issue that caused a short delay,” said Allegiant Airlines Spokesperson Sonya Padgett in an email to The GeorgeAnne. “At the same time, the flight crew ‘timed out.’ Per FAA regulations, the crew is required to rest before their next flight, so the decision was made to reschedule the flight for today.” This time, rather than order a new plane, Allegiant Air provided the entire football team and staff with hotel accommodations and meals for the night and following morning.
Page designed by Adrienne Prophet
After eating, putting together a makeshift projector, and making TikToks for a few hours, the Eagles were finally able to board a plane. The plane departed from Newark shortly after 3 p.m. and the Eagles arrived in Savannah shortly after 5 p.m. “We value our customers and regret that, for this flight, we didn’t meet the standard of service that we hold ourselves to,” Padgett said. After arriving in Savannah more than 24 hours after the game concluded, the players were given Monday off. The team will hold their next practice on Tuesday.
Women’s basketball team struggles on the road at Jacksonville State BY DJ CADDEN
Sports Correspondent DJ.Cadden@thegeorgeanne.com
Despite a solid offensive performance, lackluster defense haunted the Eagles as they fell to Jacksonville State, 70-58. Despite an outstanding 25 point performance from senior guard A’Tyanna Goulden, the rest of the Eagles struggled to pick up the slack. In addition to Goulden, redshirt freshman Eden Johnson also eclipsed the double digit mark. Sophomore Shondell Vickers was dominant on the boards as she raked in 13 total rebounds.
Senior Tatum Barber also had a good day with six rebounds of her own. For Jacksonville Stare, the story of the game was the threepoint line. The Gamecocks attempted 45 three-pointers and were successful on 14. Junior Yamia Johnson led the Gamecocks in scoring with 24 points. Senior Taylor Hawks was the only other Gamecock to eclipse double digits and also managed to lead the team with five. The Eagles will now shift their focus to Saturday’s game against Division II Augusta University. The game is set to tip-off at 2 p.m.
