Students offer their thoughts on parking at GS

Your View

Natalia Atlow freshman fashion and merchandising major Do you think it’s fair that Parking & Transportation gets to issue tickets for each violation and eventually even put a boot on a car? “Sort of, but maybe not to that extreme. I understand that people shouldn’t be parking where they’re not supposed to be, but I certainly don’t want my car to be booted.”

Tam Vo sophomore pre-pharmacy

Are there enough parking spaces or do we need to find a way to better accommodate students?

DEVIN CONWAY Conway is a junior journalism major from Manchester, New Hampshire.

One of the most common complaints that I hear about our university from other students is that our parking situation, to put it mildly, is less than ideal. There aren’t enough parking spaces, especially around extremely busy areas like the library or the Russell Union, and even if you do manage to find a spot, you’re always susceptible to a run-in with the widely respected officers of Parking and Transportation. They have a sworn duty to protect and to serve and they take their job very seriously. If it weren’t for them, how would we stop people from parking in 30 minute parking zones for 45 minutes at a time? There’s absolutely nothing worse than getting out of a class that has a mandatory attendance policy, with a teacher whose lecture is about as entertaining as watching paint dry and then spotting a bright yellow envelope on your windshield as you make your way through the parking lot. Even if we haven’t directly experienced the frustration of having to deal with a ticket for committing the crime of trying to get to class on time, we can at least feel the anger vicariously through our friends. I spoke to a few different students about some of these aforementioned issues. Here’s what they had to say.

“There are, but there should be more of a focus on putting the parking spaces in one specific area.”

Sara Simpson junior business management major How do you think the University can work to take care of students that are trying to find parking at or near the library during busy times? “Either by increasing the size of the parking lot or maybe allowing students to park wherever they’d like to for a few hours after classes are over for the day.”

Halloween brings GS and Statesboro together BY TAISHA WHITE

The George-Anne staff

The annual Halloween celebrations in the Georgia Southern and Statesboro communities allows people to express themselves in creative ways, all while bringing people together. For most individuals in both communities, Halloween is a fun and festive way for the community to come together. “Everyone dresses up and has fun and it allows people to revert back to their innocence and their childhood,” Roxie Santiesteban, a resident of Metter, said. “When you have children, it’s a lot more fun. It’s a great time for families to be together and it’s one of my favorite holidays.” Each year brings a variety of Halloween related events, from Scare in the Square in downtown Statesboro or the Bulloch County’s annual Trick or Treat at Mill Creek Park. Although many of the Halloween events in the Statesboro area are geared towards the entire family, the main people who are bound to

receive the greatest enjoyment are the kids. Fabiola Trujillo, a Metter resident, believes kids are the main reason for Halloween. “It’s not about the families. It’s about the kids,” Trujillo said. “It allows kids to enjoy themselves and have a great time.” All in all, each Halloween is bound to be bigger than the last, bringing a greater bond to members across the city and campus community. “Halloween is a fun way for kids to get out and have fun,” Christie Carpenter, Brooklet resident, said. “Sometimes Halloween can be a little scary for kids, so the community has things for kids that can not be as scary for them. So that’s a good thing.”

Fright Night The second annual Fright Night has made its way from the RAC to the Hanner Fieldhouse old Gym. Free to all GS students, the Fright Night haunted house will feature a variety of props and special effects. University

board members as well as volunteered faculty and staff will appear in a variety of costumes in the haunted house. Keandra Goodman, special events chair for UPB, explains why individuals should attend Fright Night Halloween weekend. “Fright Night is more of an alternative to other things that are happening on Halloween weekend,” Goodman said. UPB has been planning this year’s Fright Night since the end of last semester. “Well last year was the first Fright Night and we had a great turn out,” Goodman said. “It will be a safe, free and fun outlet on campus, where students can enjoy themselves without having to go into the city and getting caught up in the madness of Halloween weekend.” Stephanie Scott, sophomore fashion merchandising major, is excited to attend the haunted house. “The haunted house sounds like a lot of fun,” Scott said. “I would love to go.” Fright Night will be opening

its doors Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. and will be open until 10 p.m. Eagle ID is required in order to participate in the event.

Halloween Costume Contest The annual Halloween Costume Contest, held by the University Store, will allow students to show off their best and most creative Halloween costume for a prize. Students, either as an individual or as a group, entering the contest will be judged by a group of staff members. Costumes will be judged based off of creativity, originality and their ability to portray a character/characters in the best way. Carlita Slatky, director of the University Store, explains how the costume contest is a great way to bring the GS community together. “I think that sometimes we are all about academics and business and I think this is just fun, lighthearted way to celebrate a holiday,” Slatky said. “We are not really here for Thanksgiving or Christmas because the campus is usually

closed. This is one of the few holidays we can actually get into and have fun with here on campus.” Winners will be ranked third to first place for individuals and as whole for the group contest. Third place wins a $25 University Store gift card, second place wins a $50 University Store gift card and first place wins a $100 University Store gift card. Winners of the group contest will each receive a $10 Chickfil-A card. Meghan Brown, sophomore early childhood education major, believes that Halloween gives people the ability to express themselves. “I feel like it’s the one time of the year where we all get to truly express ourselves as who we really want to be and who we truly are inside,” Brown said. “I always feel like Halloween is our day to do that and that’s why we celebrate it.” The contest will be held on October 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Store. Winners will be announced at 5 p.m. on the GSUStore Facebook page.

GS Public Safety on alert for Halloween KIARA GRIFFIN

Despite no sightings of clowns, GS Public Safety will still be keeping an eye out for threats this weekend. Officials urge students to use common sense. BY MATTHEW ENFINGER The George-Anne contributor

Georgia Southern Public Safety is taking many initiatives into keeping students safe this Halloween, due to recent occurrences, one concern about this year’s festivities is the campus clown epidemic. “We’ve had no credible clown sightings on our campus,” GS Criminal Investigation Department Captain Terry Briley said. Despite reports elsewhere, Georgia Southern Public Safety will not pursue people dressed as clowns but instead approach all reports the same. “It would not surprise me that we would have some folks dressed up like clowns. I would venture to say it would get our attention a little closer but we are not going to single them out. We’re not going to pick on people who are wearing clown outfits…. But, if we have an incident where a clown person or an alleged clown person causes a problem, we’ll deal with it like we could deal with anyone else,” Briley said. While officers are not enforcing a no clowns costume initiative, Deputy Chief Clay Gracen advises students to

use their best judgment and “common sense” in regarding activities this Halloween night. “It’s not a good idea to go out and try to scare people who don’t want to be frightened. We would advise you not to do that because there are consequences to your actions,” Deputy Chief Gracen said. Students approached by a creepy clown or anyone with intent of harassment is advised to remove themselves from the situation and call 911 immediately. Another means of protection that GS Public Safety advises students to use this Halloween is the new LiveSafe app. “We are pushing that app extremely hard because it’s an extra way to communicate with law enforcement,” Investigator Danny Garrigus of GS Public Safety said, “if you see something, it’s a very good way of pointing it out to us.” Through the LiveSafe App, not only can students report suspicious activity, they can also provide pictures and descriptions of the event, and allow Public Safety to track the user until they have reached a safe area.

If we have an incident where a clown person or an alleged clown person causes a problem, we’ll deal with it like we could deal with anyone else.” TERRY BRILEY

Barefoot Campus Outfitters has multiple chains in the U.S. Statesboro’s location will close in about a month.

BY LUKE PASHKE

The George-Anne contributor

Barefoot Outfitters, the campus clothing store located on Chandler Road next to Dingus McGee’s, is hosting a fire sale this month in preparation of closing the store. In order to salvage what they can from their inventory, Barefoot Outfitters is offering significant sales until they officially close. In recent days, the store has experienced a sharp increase in customer traffic. According to Austin Adams, an employee at Barefoot Outfitters and a junior business management major, their current fire sale is “by far” the best sale the clothing store has offered. “Right now, we’re doing $5 and $10 t-shirts, and any items that are over $50 are going to be marked down to $25, and then a lot of other items are 50 percent off,” Adams said. In addition to these deals, all the store’s hats are marked down to $10.

Barefoot Outfitters joins a long list of closed businesses in the Statesboro area, including Grays Bookstore, Rum Runners, Retrievers, Moonshiners, Big Shows, Hungry Howies, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and more. From lowincome college students to a location that’s seeing less and less traffic, there are a multitude of circumstances that could be the store’s undoing. However, Adams believes that it’s a combination of factors that led Barefoot Outfitters to Statesboro’s local business graveyard. “Honestly, it’s just hard for businesses around here to adapt to the University Store and the University in general. A lot of it has to do with licensing and just sales in general. Plus, with this location, there’s not a lot of foot traffic coming this way. Just a lot of little things added up,” Adams said. At this time, there’s no exact date for the store’s closing, but it will be out of business in approximately one month.

Truly a southern sunrise

The Tuten Brothers BY ARAYA JACKSON The George-Anne staff

It is no secret that Georgia Southern is home to many aspiring musicians and bands. However, Statesboro isn’t the only place in the Southeast aspiring artists make their dreams come true. Just 160 short miles away is the home of the University of Georgia, Athens. The city is home to countless performers, such as R.E.M. and Widespread Panic. Now there’s another up-and-coming group. The Tuten Brothers are a group of three UGA students who seem to be making a legacy of their own. Their up-beat melodies and catchy lyricism is one to catch any country-soul music lover’s eye, or ear, perhaps.

The Who Brothers? Brothers Walker and Sam Tuten from Macon are the young and dedicated frontmen of the group. Longtime friend Connor McAdams from Roswell plays the drums along with them. Straight out of a spare bedroom in their cousin’s house, the Tuten Brothers recorded their debut single “Southern Sunrise.” Since then, they have been blazing through the Athens and Atlanta area at venues such as 40 Watt Club, Live Wire, and the Georgia Theatre. The band moved from the spare bedroom to a studio in Nashville, Tennessee to record with Alex Gilson of Gold Cassette Productions, and released another single, “Why You Gotta.” Their anticipated debut self-titled EP was released on Oct. 25, featuring Why You Gotta, and three other songs. By taking a look at their first two singles, you really get a feel for these guys, their artistic capabilities, and the music they want to spread.

Southern Sunrise This song is a great one to have as a first country single. This relatable tune talks about traveling around to reach one goal, warmer weather. It opens up strong with the drums, followed by a smooth guitar melody that’ll quickly get you tapping right along with the song. The warm, energetic vocals add to this engaging tone, compelling you to keep listening. Their young voices combined with the localized lyrics keep the song dynamic while holding the listener’s attention. There is a nice pitch range, especially in the bridge of the song. The additional clap-along brings the

The band’s self titled EPwas released on Oct. 25. The tracks on it are “Why You Gotta,” “Lonesome Travelor,” “Like This,” and “Sarah.” listeners right into the song with the brothers. It is smooth and almost a sunny tune itself. It is easy to imagine yourself jamming to this with the windows down, travelling on your own road trip.

Why You Gotta The violin at the beginning of their second single is a great opener. The vocals start earlier, pulling you right in like the violin did. This tune has a stronger energetic sound than the first single does, but the simple structure design is still there. The repetitive “oh, oh, oh, oh” throughout the song shows the feeling of being taking away by a girl dancing, disregarding what he has already experienced with her, as the lyrics go.

The song is upbeat, and makes you want to move just like they describe the moving girl. The lyrics are easy to sing along to, and flow along with a continued simpler style. The Tuten Borthers’ YouTube channel has a live performance of “Why You Gotta” at The Georgia Theatre in Athens. This classic country and rock ‘n’ roll inspired band is quickly getting their name out and are on their way to the big stages. The Tuten Brothers will be headlining their first show at The Georgia Theater November 15. Their self-titled EP is available now on Apple Music and Spotify. You can also check out the band’s social media outlets for more information.

-- Losing -Your Rocky Horror Show Virginity FEATURES

The main cast members perform the final dance of the show. The play is an adaption of a movie by the same name.

Entire cast of Averitt Theatre performance. The show was performed at the Averitt Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BY THOMAS BARSZCZ

The George-Anne staff

Imagine downtown Statesboro, the quaint center of of our humble little town. Now imagine one of its main streets filled with women in their underwear and men dressed like women. That is the scene while people wait in line outside of the Averitt Theater to attend the Rocky Horror Picture Show Tuesday night.

It begins

10-27-16

As you enter the doors to claim your tickets from willcall, you are greeted by scantily dressed cast members who give you a playbill, bag of props and ask you if you are a “virgin.” Being a “virgin” means you have never attended a Rocky Horror Picture Show Live performance, and if you have not, they mark you with a blood red “V” on your forehead with lipstick right before seating you for the show. This is to single you out for the “sluts” in the audience, those who have seen the

A “virgin” gets marked with a red V before entering the theatre. A “virgin” is a person who has never seen the show live.

show multiple times. After being seated, the show director announces that the first half of the pre-show will begin. That part of the show is a costume contest for men dressed in drag and/or people who dressed up like characters from the movie. The participants strut on stage for the audience and are narrowed down to finalists by the crowd. Once there are five finalists, they must introduce themselves to the crowd and spell their own names in the air using only the motion of their butts. This decides the two finalists who must compete for the win by lip syncing and dancing to a song as sexily as possible. The winner then gets a prize.

The sacrifice

After the costume contest, the director asks the “virgins” to stand, give a middle-finger salute and recite a pledge to prepare for Rocky Horror’s

second half of the pre-show known as “the virgin sacrifice.” This “sacrifice” entails a series of several different sexual and illicit games that 10 virgins must play at a time wherein the winner, determined by the crowd, wins a prize for proving his/herself on stage. The games vary in themes. Some where virgins must recite a random pick-up line to the crowd as seductively as possible, or seeing who can put a condom on a cucumber with their mouth the fastest. After around four different virgin games, the sacrifice is over and the crowd becomes complete once again, and that is when the show starts.

Experiencing the play

The show itself is an interesting creation where actors dress up like characters from the movie but instead of performing the entire play alone, the actors play out the scenes from the movie while the movie itself plays behind them. This allows the actors to reenact the movie but make it their own. For example, some props in the movie are replaced with large rubber penises and certain scenes of embrace are re-created with the actors groping each other, all adding to insane weirdness that is Rocky Horror. Throughout the show, the audience is encouraged to interact with the cast as they are provided with a bag of props to throw, wave and dance with as they correlate with different scenes in the play/movie.

It never ends

After the show, the director invites the audience to join the cast for an after party at 40 East Grill right across the street, emphasizing that Boro DD will be there to take people home safely. Even though Rocky Horror is an event that encourages open-mindedness and self-expression, safety is still a priority, which is also why they emphasize the fact that although the cast is halfnaked, it is not okay to touch them. From women in lace and fishnets to men in wigs and heels to giant rubber penises for props to condoms being thrown into the crowd: there really is not anything you won’t see at Rocky Horror Picture Show. So, women, go and put on some lingerie and men, go put on some dresses and heels and buy your ticket for Rocky Horror Picture Show Live. Although the Averitt Theater only hosted Rocky Horror for Oct. 25 and 26, students can still catch the show at the Bay Street Theater in Savannah. It runs from Oct. 27 to. Oct. 31 and showings start at 8 p.m with a midnight showing on Oct. 30.

Rocky Horror Picture Show Then Versus Now

The new cast of the remake “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again” includes Tim Curry as the crimonologist.

BY ARIANE JENSEN

The George-Anne contributor

Whether you are a “virgin”, “masturbator” or “slut”, you are always welcome at the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The original motion picture premiered in 1975 with a wild cast including Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss and many more. This year, Fox Network produced the TV-movie remake titled “Let’s Do The Time Warp Again,” airing right after the 41 anniversary of the original picture. The new cast includes the vivacious Laverne Cox as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Victoria Justice as Janet Weiss

Page designed by Stevey Mann

and Curry as the criminologist and narrator of the story, a great nod to the 1975 hit. The new adaptation features changes to the several songs, and also some script changes to enable all characters to speak, but also to add to the general sexuality of the show. The songs were all put to a live band which slowed them down significantly, and made them somewhat unrecognizable. When actually addressing the “Time Warp,” Fox network seemed to skip over it. Giving it a brief minute and a half performance and only featuring the original choreography once. However, the audience was included in the film. That was a smart addition for the people who plan on attending the live performance, since having the

audience allows viewers to know the proper cues to use props. Some more changes that were evident was the extra dialog during sex scenes, the assistant in the narrator’s office and Colombia’s monologue. Fox did a great job of explaining characters and their backgrounds, something that was needed in the original movie. Overall, the new rendition was slightly disappointing, and nothing will really live up to the original Rocky Horror motion picture. There is something so incredible about the grittiness of the film. This new TV movie was too shiny and tried too hard to be as flawless as the original that we have come to love and enjoy.

Georgia Southern vs. Appalachian State THE GAMEDAY PREVIEW THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27 - 7:30 P.M. PAULSON STADIUM - STATESBORO, GA Broadcasted on ESPNU

GEORGIA SOUTHERN ApPALACHIAN STATE BY CHRIS SMITH BY Robert George This Thursday, Georgia Southern (4-2, 3-1) plays their longtime rival Appalachian State in a redemption match from last year. There is no love lost between both teams and it is sure to be a classic contest. GS is coming off a 22-19 road win against New Mexico State, while App State just defeated the Idaho Vandals last week 37-19. GS is in the fourth-place spot in the Sun Belt conference and App State is holding on tight to that number one spot. The Eagles managed to put together a wellplayed game to get the edge on NMSU. Quarterback Kevin Ellison managed to a have a good game last Saturday finishing with 101 yards passing to go along with two touchdowns. He even led the team with 117 yards on the ground. The rivalry between GS and App State has been brewing since their time in the FCS. These two teams have played each other each season dating back to 1993.

App State holds the series lead 17-13-1, GS is looking to add another win to their column on Thursday. GS has lost four of the last five matchups against the Mountaineers. If GS wants to assert their dominance as the best team in the Sun Belt, they will need to thoroughly take care of the Sun Belt leader. The Eagles have seemed a bit off ever since the beginning of their four-game road trip. Coming back to Paulson Stadium and playing in front of their home fans can be the spark that they have needed. The last time these two teams met in Paulson stadium, Southern defeated App State 34-14. In that game Matt Breida rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Ellison ran for 151 yards and a touchdown. All GS fans are encouraged to attend this Thursday home game. This contest will be a blue-out, so all Eagles should wear their blue attire.

When Georgia Southern (GS) takes on Appalachian State (APP) tonight under the bright lights of ESPNU, they’ll face what is arguably the best allaround team yet. While Ole Miss is more prestigious and Western Michigan is undefeated and ranked 20th in the nation, the Mountaineers boast a team that has no obvious weaknesses. App is 5-2 (3-0 Sun Belt) on the season, with the losses coming to Tennessee in overtime and Miami at home. They do, however, have a perfect record in the Sun Belt and are in a three-way tie along with Troy and Arkansas State. They’ve outscored their opponents 79-22 in their three conference games this season. GS head Tyson Summers said that the number one thing that jumps out about this team is that they play hard every down in every phase of the game. “They’re a tough, physical football team with a lot of team speed,” Summers said. Offensively, the Mountaineers are led by their senior quarterback, Taylor Lamb. He’s the engine of the well-oiled machine that is their offense. He is a great passer and a capable runner, and leads the team with 10 total touchdowns. In last year’s matchup with the Eagles, Lamb threw for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

But as talented as he is, it’s APP’s running backs that boast the most talent on the team. Sophomore Jalin Moore already has 800 rushing yards on the season and senior Marcus Cox should be back from an injury he sustained earlier in the season. They’ll be looking to run against a GS team that has given up an average of about 260 rushing yards in its last three games. “They’re all really good players, and they can rotate them in at any point,” Summers said. Defensively, the Mountaineers are anchored by a pair of stud linebackers in Eric Boggs and Keenan Gilchrist. They’ve combined for over 100 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. They’ll look to add to those totals against a runoriented GS unit. “It jumps out at you how well they play with their hands, getting off blocks and running to the ball. That’s why their playing as good on defense as they are,” Summers said. Boggs and Gilchrist will be flanked by a pair of ball hawks at the cornerback position in Mondo Williams and Clifton Duck. The duo has a combined seven interceptions so far this season, and will look to make plays when GS drops back to pass, something they’ve been doing more of this year.

FROM THE EDITOR BY JASON HUBER

The Appalachian Sports Editor

Q: Since 2000, Georgia Southern is 6-3 against App State in Paulson Stadium. What about Paulson makes it tough for the Mountaineers to win there? A: App State is known for being dominant at home. Holding a 123-1 record against the Eagles in Boone, it has been no different in the matchups between these two teams. Just being in the atmosphere of the fans in Boone gives us motivation and I think Georgia Southern fans do the same for the Eagles in such a big rivalry. Q: Who’s been the MVP for the Mountaineers this season? A: Offensive statistics were not the most polished when looking at the Mountaineers first three games with two being against Top-25 teams, but after all-conference running back Marcus Cox was injured in week three, backup running back Jalin Moore has become the heartbeat for the Mountaineers. Ranked 21st in rushing yards in the country and 774 yards in just four games, Moore has proved to be the MVP and allowed App State to not rush back Cox from injury.

Q: Who’s the X-Factor for the Mountaineers the for Thursday night’s game? A: The X-Factor on the Mountaineers will be junior linebacker Eric Boggs. Boggs had a breakout season in 2015 and has followed up this year so far with 57 tackles, two sacks and one interception. Boggs should be able to put a lot of pressure alone on the Eagle’s defense. Q: What’s the general feeling on App State’s campus about Georgia Southern and its football team? A: Georgia Southern week has become a tradition. Playing three years in a row now on Thursday nights, Mountaineer fans have become known for using the hashtag #FailSouthern whenever Georgia Southern loses a game. The Eagles have been the biggest rivalry since we entered the FBS with them. Q: What’s your prediction for who will win and what the score will be? A: Even though App State is 16-1 in their last 17 Sun Belt games and it has taken the last three Sun Belt opponents 179 minutes to score a point, I think this game will be a very close one. My prediction is App State 24 Georgia Southern 17. Questions by Robert George

It’s time again, Eagle Nation. It’s time for another matchup between Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. App State leads the rivalry series 16-13-1, but haven’t historically played well in Paulson Stadium. The Eagles have won seven of the last 11 games, including the 2014 contest which saw them dismantle the Mountaineers 34-14.

But App is rolling so far this year, and come into the contest with plenty of confidence and ability. They won the meeting last year, and are looking to repeat and prove that they are the better team since transitioning to the FBS. “It’s Southern week,” Taylor Lamb, App State quarterback told the Watauga Democrat earlier this week. “It’s circled on the calendar. It’s a short week to get ready for them, but it’s also a short week for them to get ready for us. They’ll be ready and it will be a great atmosphere.” Tyson Summers understands what’s at stake, and how much this rivalry means to the players and fans. A win here could spark another run towards a Sun Belt title. A loss would put the Eagles two games behind first place. “There are certain rivalries that people try to quell to some degree, but that’s not here,” Summers

@cj_deboer If Monday’s could be described as a football team, it’d be App State. #AppStateHateWeek #HailSouthern @A_Ellingson Found a dollar on the ground this morning. Earned a degree in economics from App State. #AppStateHateWeek @valpal104 I hate tests almost as much as I hate App State #appstatehateweek #booCrappstate

said. “That’s certainly not at App State either I don’t think.” The Eagles are looking to avenge last season’s loss in a game where App State closed the gaps and held GS to just 13 points. They should be helped by a home crowd that will be glad to be back in Paulson; it’s been 40 days since we last filled the stands here. Let’s be clear: this is a mustwin for both teams. App State is looking to keep pace with Troy and Arkansas State and can’t afford to fall a game behind this late in the schedule. Also, GS is trying to make up ground in the standings after losing to Arkansas State. The Eagles will need to play their best game of the season to take down the Mountaineers, a team who might be the most balanced in the conference. Whatever happens, expect another battle. My prediction is Georgia Southern over App State 20-17.

@the_onb How do you get an app state grad off your front porch? You pay him for the pizzas #crAppstate #HailSouthern @DFlake_GS7 @AppState_FB is going all out this week huh? Just a good thing that animals can’t press charges…#HateWeek
