Beautiful NIghtmare Models: Whitney & Hallie Photography: Ca rey J. Mays Hair and Make-Up: Ma r v in Hayes

All MAC cosmetics were used to achieve Whitney’s look (left). To accomplish that dewy glow, Studio Fix Fluid foundation was applied on top of Studio moisturizing cream and set with Select Sheer loose powder. To bring out some color on the face, “Gingerly” (blush) was dusted on the apple of the cheeks.

All MAC products were used for Hallie’s look (right).Studio Fix Fluid Foundation was used as a base and was set with Select Sheer Pressed Powder. Apples of the cheeks were brushed with “Sincere” blush.

On the eye, “Untitled Paint” was used as a base to allow the shadow to pop. “Orb” was used over the lid and “Carbon” was blended from the outer corner into the crease. The brow bone was highlighted with “Shroom” and the brows were amplified with eyebrow pencils in the colors “Fling” and “Brun.” To finish off the eyes, they were outlined in “Endgrave” and lashes were made luscious with Pro Long Lash Mascara.

“Untitled Paint” was applied to the eye as a base color. Over the lid, “Omega” was used and “Brun” was utilized from the outer corner to the crease. Eyes were rimmed with “Stubborn” eyeliner and highlighted on the brow bone with “Shroom.” The eyebrow was finished by filling with a brow pencil in the shade “Fling” and lashes were elongated with Pro Long Lash Mascara.

Lips were colored with “Myth” and glossed with “Lip Glass.”

better than ever

This spirit popularized by the prohibition has made a comeback behind the bar and should no longer be feared. Distilled with fruits and botanicals, gin has far greater depth and variety than other clear spirits. Gin can be enjoyed straight or with a simple mixer like tonic. The following cocktails show just how great of a spirit gin truly is. Do not be afraid to join me on the quest for a gin cocktail in downtown Gainesville. Starting with the easiest to drink and ending with a more potent cocktail, all six are completely different.   The Gainesville Style

The Gainesville Style: Shops

The Colorful Gator, located at 2441 N.W. 43rd St. in Gainesville, is a signature store that carries all the popular Lilly Pulitzer items, including clothes, accessories, shoes, purses, makeup bags and stationary items. The store sells exclusively Lilly Pulitzer clothing, but does carry Loren Hope jewelry, a fine handcrafted jewelry line. Although the store has only been open for not even a year, The Colorful Gator has already made a name for itself. Lilly Pulitzer, a brand that started in the ‘50s in Palm Beach, Florida, has grown tremendously in the past year. Owner and manager, Susan Koren, feels the explosion in popularity is due to the brand’s “resort chic” style, which women seem to love. While women in their ‘20s to ‘40s give the store their strongest business, mostly due to the classic Lilly Pulitzer strapless dresses and other younger styles, The Colorful Gator is multigenerational. The store sells children’s clothes, and has shoppers ranging from three months old, to women in their ‘60s and ‘70s. A huge seller for all ages is the Classic American Shift Dress, which flatters all ages and body types. When asked if most of her shoppers are college girls, being the store right in the middle of a college town, Koren replied, “It’s half and half. A lot of young moms come in just as much as the college students because we sell matching children’s dresses, to the adult dresses, so moms can match with their kids. The moms really like this.” The Colorful Gator does not offer the full Lilly Pulitzer line, simply because it is too extensive. Instead, Koren selects which items she believes will sell best here in Gainesville. Koren feels that Lilly Pulitzer remains most popular in Florida, most likely because it originated here, but the brand is sold nationwide, from Florida to California. Although Lilly Pulitzer is currently more popular with southern states, it is expanding up north as well. Koren tells us that although the spring line is one the biggest, we should be super excited for the Resort line to come out in mid October. On what we can expect for the new fall line, she said, “Lilly Pulitzer has a new fall color palette, consisting of a lot of bright colors, and dark navy and dark turquoise.” If you haven’t already checked out The Colorful Gator, you should stop by. There is something there for ladies of all ages, offering quality, style and fit. If you can’t make it to the store, be sure to visit their website at, http://www. thecolorfulgator.com. The Gainesville Style: Model Citizen

Brazil. Paris. Ethiopia. Gainesville? These exotic locations are known worldwide for birthing strikingly beautiful models. Gainesville may not be an internationally known city, but it has given rise to a model who is dominating the catwalk. Shara McGlinn, a Gainesville native, models for Ford Modeling Agency in Chicago.

“Growing up, I was always a lot taller than everyone else,” Shara said.

Family and friends encouraged her to model, so at 18 years old, Shara participated in a modeling competition in the mall for Elite Modeling Management. She won runner-up. However, her time with Elite was short-lived because the agency criticized her body and overall look, which Shara was quite uncomfortable with. In the meantime, Shara studied English at Santa Fe College and finished her last semester at the University of Florida. Two years later, a co-worker from Shara’s job at Krishna.com took some photos of her on a beach in St. Augustine, and Shara sent the photos to Ford Models in Miami. Shortly after, Shara received a phone call from Ford asking to meet with her, and she and her mother left for Miami.

“We went to Miami and signed the contract in five minutes,” she said.

After sealing the deal with Ford, Shara quit her job and began her new career as a model.

“It’s fun and adventurous. I never know who I’m gonna work for next.”

Shara does a combination of commercial and high-fashion work. She has modeled for major department stores such as Belks, JC Penney and Macy’s, ripped the runway for designers like Heatherette, JLo, Akris, and Aéropostale. She’s done photoshoots domestically and overseas and was featured in campaigns for Sony and Virgin Mobile. Now 25 and a seasoned professional in the industry, Shara reflects on her earlier days as a model at runway shows. “Everyone was changing backstage, and I’m like ‘Oh my God, where are the dressing rooms?’ but you get used to it.”

She recalls her first runway show, which was for Heatherette.

“It was crazy! Everyone was wearing blond wigs,” she said, “I was pretty much a nervous wreck. They threw a surfboard at me last minute, and I could barely carry the thing around.”

And like every models dreaded moment, she remembers the fear of tripping on the catwalk.

Shara was in Miami doing a fashion show and the runway was down the middle of a pool after it just fin-

“When I get on, it’s like an adrenaline rush.”

ished raining, so tripping was a potential. However, after the initial shock, it was smooth sailing.   The Gainesville Style

In Gainesville, she is like a mini-celebrity amongst her friends and family. “In Alachua, they think it’s the most glamorous thing ever. It’s not all that glamorous, but I let them think it is.” Her parents are her biggest supporters and motivators. “My mom carries my magazines and shows them to everyone she comes across.” Even if it’s a racy photograph she won’t show her dad, and even though her mother makes comments like, “Shara, you almost have a nipple showing,” she beams about the fact that her parents love her unconditionally. “I always say anything that’s good about me comes from my parents and anything bad about me is my own mistake.” As a once-aspiring model herself, Shara leaves some words of wisdom for girls who want to break into the industry. “If they know they can do it, they should definitely try. Don’t be afraid to ask a question. Don’t be timid. Don’t be shy. It took me two years to get started.” Breaking into the modeling industry can be a tough cookie, but in the words of Shara, “if it’s your karma, it will happen.” After modeling, Shara hopes to go back to school and design a jewelry line. At the end of the day, Shara is the stickler on grammar who has a fascination with Eminem. She’s the neon finger painting girl who prefers a leather studded jacket over a dress any day, the easy going nerd who would never make it on America’s Next Top model because she’s just not that confrontational. Above all, she is simply the girl next door who chased her passion. “My greatest achievement is being able to do what I do.”

Bra From ancient Minoan sportswear to Lady Gaga’s meat-kini, the bra has been a fixture in the female ward robe. Bikini-like garments were earliest depicted on seventh-century women in Crete as support for the breasts while performing in sports. In classical Greece, bands made of either cloth or leather, were called apodesmos or in Rome, strophium. Through centuries and over continents the brassiere has been through several transformations from bandeau-like structures to the recognizable modern-day bra. The bra, as we know it, made its debut in the early 20th century in attempt to replace the health-hazardous corset, which had been popular since the 15th century. For the exception of a brief period during the ‘60s when the bra was considered an objectifying symbol of womanhood, most women have adopted the bra as an integral player in their wardrobe. Until the next period of ultra-feminist bra-burning, females can embrace their cups and the history behind them. --Raven McMillian

I draw inspiration from my coworkers and classmates on a daily basis. I look to make up artists, painters, sculptors, musicians and craftspeople for inspiration. You really just have to keep your eyes and mind open. If you could apply makeup to any person, who would it be? I think everyone could benefit from a few tasteful strokes, but most of the time I'm overcome with the desire to take a makeup wipe to many. The truth is: I want to do everyones makeup and teach them how to best help themselves.

Do you have any artists that inspire you? I have learned so much from reading Robert Jones’ book “Makeup Makeovers.” If you could apply makeup to any person, who would it be? I would have to say Anna Paquin or “Sookie Stackhouse” from the show Trueblood.   The Gainesville Style
