THE GARLIC BREAD

We are proud and excited to introduce the first issue of the garlic bread magazine. Our main goal and motivation is to offer a stage for young artists like ourselves, which use the photography in their art. The magazine has no themes or content limitations. We are fascinated by the different ways, in which artists choose to decode their personal obsessions. Our aim is to show a varied selection of works and to try to raise a discussion about the medium’s borders and about it’s place in the contemporary art world. We are very grateful to all the artists, who had submitted their works, and with their help the first issue has finally came out of the oven. We hope that you’ll find it interesting and spread the news further. Sasha & Yoav www.thegarlicbread.com

YURAI BROWN Intake-Compression-Intake

From the most personal place, I came out to a meeting place of universal objects, photographs and mourning. The photographs in the project are not of life but document what is left after it, in which exists the same tension between the impersonality of the objects and the loss of their functional value to the aura they are bestowed after death – an aura which is the direct result of the fact that they preserve the life story and body touch of the person who was and is no longer.

NAAMA ISRAEL Traum Fantasy has no borders. It is the world of human imagination, and is built of human dreams. It would come back is the man would dream, ask, and long for it. This is my attempt of reviving that fantasy, and calling the viewer to believe in it once more.

EYAL TAGAR Fragments of Violence

Fragments of Violence is a photographic project prompted by thoughts of violence in the public sphere. It unsettled me how deeply infused into our subconscious is our perception of control and power, and how it is expressed in our lives and behaviours. Through recognizing and understanding the presence of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as a symbol of power and domination in Israel, I created a body of work through photographing objects, or parts of objects, used by me during my military service in the IDF. These everyday, almost banal objects, have a routine presence in the life of a nineteen-year-old boy serving in the IDF, as I was eleven years ago.

KIRA KLETSKY

When people talk about their loved ones and tell how they do certain things, or describe their habits around home, they at many times smile. In this ongoing series about my grandparents I am capturing their moments. I will always want to remember all those little things, which make them who they are to me.

DANIEL GENTELEV trompe l’oei In this body of work I deal with questions of identity and home. Through a series of portraits and interiors I attempted to process the nested sense of alienation both in my parent’s house and this country. Here i am trying to convey a lack of belonging that I have and the subjects I take, all refugees in their own way. Everyone certainly hunted half cunning hunters. Adolescence in the shadow of patriarchal father, threatened and alienated precisely reflected the direct and provocative look of the subject. Between all of them created an intimate friendship.

NATALIE ARVIV Aesthetics of the not aesthetic Art serves as a tool which is capable of appeal to human emotion of the viewer in it. Works of art has the power of evoking a sense of aesthetic, moral, rage, anger and even disgust. My work is unconventional, deals with materials that make up the basis of the human body, materials that are considered impure and insignificant, although they are simple and natural. The work deals with the use of uncontrollable body secretions often seem and often invisible, touching our inner, which is actually extrovert. Turning private into public sometimes provokes rejection, embarrassment and threat.
