Best Pie Company
The secret to Best Pie’s success is twofold. “We use an old-fashioned recipe for the crust and only the freshest and finest ingredients for the filling. That’s the formula,” said Sherman McCoy, who owns the shop with his wife Patricia. Two dozen pies grace the menu. Some are seasonal—such as cherry and blueberry peach; others—like sweet potato and coconut custard—are available yearround. Reduced-sugar and lemon meringue pies must be ordered. While it’s the actual making of the pie that Sherman McCoy loves best, hearing how much customers enjoy the fruits of his labor is a close second, he said. 13600 Old Annapolis Road, Bowie 20720 301-860-0620 bestpiecompany.com

Sam’s is like family to many long-term employees and patrons. “Our customers enjoy … seeing familiar faces,” and it’s not unusual for them to “tell us their first summer job was at Sam’s and that they remember coming to the car wash with their parents when they were children.” 3401 Branch Ave., Temple Hills 20748 301-894-3100 samscarwash.com
