It’s hard to believe that Leadership Montgomery was just a seed of an idea 26 years ago. It took 9 months to the “birth” of the first class, and I have always thought of LM as my baby. I could never have imagined that it would grow up to have 2,100 graduates from our 5 programs (Core, Senior, Youth, Executive and the newest, Emerging Leaders). It has been such a joy to see our graduates serving on hundreds of boards, committees, commissions, and projects and improving the quality of life in this county that I love so much. Our graduates from all walks of life form a diverse network with core values of integrity, passion, service, leadership, diversity and relationships. Our vision is to be vital to Montgomery County through the transformational leadership of our graduates. Our graduates have provided leadership to hundreds of nonprofit and public boards, committees, commissions and projects, as well as many who serve in elected office at the State, County and local level. Every board needs leadership, and I wanted people to see informed Leadership Montgomery (LM) graduates making a difference everywhere we look in the County. Participant feedback clearly says that we have succeeded in our purpose to educate, connect, and inspire leaders to improve our community. Our great network of 2,100 graduates supports each other’s organizations, projects and lives. We have many graduates who have had a transformational experience in Leadership Montgomery, which makes them even more effective leaders. While I officially retire at the end of September, my last Celebration of Leadership as CEO and Founder of LM is May 29. The Board is honoring me with the Outstanding Leader Award. Further, they have created the Esther Newman Leadership Fund to benefit our scholarships and programs. Contributions will benefit future participants as we strive to build a lasting legacy. The most important asset of LM is our people - the graduates who feel passionately about their community, including those who serve on the LM Board, and the amazing, dedicated staff who work tirelessly to provide high quality programs. Founding and serving LM for the past 26 years has been the most rewarding professional experience of my life. How many people can say they had a vision that became a reality beyond their greatest ability to imagine? I am blessed to be one of those people.

LEADERSHIP MONTGOMERY 2015 ANNUAL REPORT | 3
n CORE PROGRAM
Program Sponsor:
Creating a Community of Purpose Since its inception in 1989, Leadership Montgomery’s Core program has focused its eight monthly day-long sessions on issues like public safety, transportation, education, diversity, communities, County government, arts and creativity. Sessions are enriched by presentations from a wealth of experts who share their knowledge and views on various topics. Yet when you ask a cross-sample of classmates what was the best thing about their LM experience, they hardly ever list suiting up in a firefighter’s gear, having a dialogue with the County Executive, or visiting an Islamic temple. Instead, each person answers with some permutation of “getting to know my classmates” and “the friendships I made.” Creating a community of purpose, a network coalition with core values of integrity, leadership, passion, relationships, service and diversity, is a great way to describe the ultimate goal for LM classes. At the end of each year, a new group of informed stewards joins the growing circle of graduates and creates connections for sharing information, ideas, and resources toward the common purpose of making Montgomery County a better place to live and work. Mark Cress passed the physical fitness test for firefighters at the Public Safety session
OCTOBER SESSION Despite an overcast day, there was nothing damp about the sunny disposition of each speaker/ presenter, led by our knowledgeable tour guide, Glenn Orlin (’95), Montgomery County Council Deputy Administrator. The passion for positive change and cooperative spirit were felt with each presentation. The history of the County was shared with such finesse by Bill Offutt, who was both entertaining and educational. As we traveled by bus to stops in the northern part of Upcounty Shady Grove Road Recycling Center, Red Wiggler Farm, BlackRock Center for the Arts, the Maryland SoccerPlex and Button Farm - our changing seats after each stop provided the opportunity to get to know more of our classmates on a personal level. – Aj Coffee, General Manager, Pike & Rose
After each session, a different participant gives a summary of the day with pictures that is posted on the website. Here are the 2015 class’ experiences.
PODER participant Danny Rivas talks in Spanish to class participants at the December session
NOVEMBER SESSION The Public Safety session day started with a fascinating discussion about Montgomery County Government, as Keith Levchenko (’08) explained the budget process, where money is spent, how it is spent, and the competing needs of various County programs and citizens. The County 101 presentation was followed by a tour of the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg. In many ways, the highlight of this visit was talking to 3 inmates about their experiences, hopes and dreams. We spent the afternoon at the Public Safety Training Academy, where I heard two statements over and over again from police and firefighters, “It is the best job I ever had” “I can’t wait to get to work in the morning.” I am not sure many of us can say that about our profession or jobs. The biggest takeaway from the day was that our first responders deserve all of the respect and admiration we can give them. - Gary Altman, Attorney at Law, Altman & Associates

DECEMBER SESSION: The session started with a powerful presentation From Higher Education to ‘Hire’ Education by Dr. DeRionne Pollard (’12), President of Montgomery College, and Susan Bateson, Chair of The Universities at Shady Grove Board of Advisors. A discussion followed about how to nurture the next generation of thinkers and what society’s views of ‘acceptable’ jobs are in the 21st century. The day included a tour of Gaithersburg High School, the session site. It was remarkable to note the range of ethnic diversity of the students. This topic was expounded upon by Brett Morales, an English teacher who initiated a student led group called PODER to help more males from the Hispanic community graduate. As part of our homework, we had to get to the session using public transportation. It was quite an experience and a source of pride given the on-time schedules and clean buses; however, we noticed how much longer it took to get around as opposed to a quick trip in the car! - Parthiv Shah, President, eLaunchers.com
JANUARY SESSION: Liz Huntley (’10), Corporate Citizenship and Community Relations Director for MedImmune, gave us a warm welcome to the beautiful MedImmune headquarters where we first heard from Casey Anderson, Chair of the Montgomery County Planning Board. Next, Jim Dinegar, President and CEO of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, led a rousing discussion on the amazing range of economic strengths and opportunities we enjoy in the Washington area. Steve Silverman, the former Director of the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development, described the County’s efforts to retain existing employers and deliver new ones. Chris Jones, President of the BMC Property Group, provided a heavyhitting and eye-opening counterpoint from the business community. Next up, Josh Carin (’14), Owner of Geppetto Catering; Michael Cassidy (’10), President and CEO of TW Perry; and Hemant Virkar (’13), President and CEO of Digital Infuzion, Inc., presented their view of the good, the bad and the ugly of doing business in Montgomery County. Ellie L. Giles (’10 SLM), Director of Operations for the Montgomery Business Development Corporation, discussed whether Montgomery County is competitive with other jurisdictions. - Anne Clinton, Associate Counsel, Brookfield June 2015
Special photo op with Governor Larry Hogan in Annapolis FEBRUARY SESSION: The day in the State Capital provided us with the opportunity that so few citizens have. Different than a typical summer day when Annapolis is filled with tourists! We learned about the legislative process in a truly “up front and personal way”. The tour of the State House, plus meeting with the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, and other legislators was icing on the cake. How many people can say they saw George Washington’s resignation letter and stood in the same place he announced his resignation? The most important lesson we learned: It is much easier than most people think to get engaged in legislation and, yes, each and every single person can make a difference! – Bill Pickhardt MARCH SESSION: Our “Day of Diversity” provided an insightful time and space for exploration into sometimes uncomfortable and controversial subjects like race, gender, religion and even accent that we seldom address so candidly. Open dialogue and sincere curiosity were encouraged through the Open Space Technology format introduced by session facilitator Eliot Pfanstiehl (Founding Board and Facilitator). The afternoon visit to the Muslim Community Center provided a first-hand glimpse into a culture and religion from a local perspective. Our discussion with their leadership revealed insights about their self-identity vs. how they feel the media portrays the Muslim faith. The closing debrief allowed many to share how the day had impacted them. Learning more about each other’s experiences and perceptions fostered conversations that helped break down barriers and helped accentuate that we are in fact strengthened and better together because of our diversity. - DeeDee Smartt Lynch - 3Circle Partners
APRIL SESSION The day started in the historic Washington Grove Town Hall, where it was easy to imagine what the County looked like decades ago. An ongoing theme of the morning was the challenge of change for residents individually and also for the larger community. From Washington Grove, we divided into smaller groups to tour the following 4 communities: White Flint, Long Branch, Wheaton, and Lincoln Park. They all have deep roots in Montgomery County and are at various stages of change and growth. As a perfect counterpoint to our morning site, we reunited at the brand new community Pike and Rose where construction is going on. No discussion of community evolution is complete without the recognition of the many nonprofits that voice the concerns of those most affected by community change: its citizens. The discussion led by Debbie Liverpool (’99) was particularly striking while sitting in the modern and vibrant AMP which, we learned from Eliot Pfanstiehl (Founding Board and Facilitator) Strathmore’s CEO, is a great example of turning a vision into reality through collaboration across industries. – Meredith Bowers, Executive Director, Jobs Unlimited, Inc.
Animated conversation about cultural differences during the March session June 2015
Improv act at the May session MAY SESSION We were treated to a glorious day at one of the County’s truly unique assets, Glen Echo Park. We got in touch with our creative sides, led by Bonnie Fogel (’95), Founder and Executive Director of Imagination Stage, who reminded us that retaining confidence in our own creativity that we had way back in kindergarten is an essential part of strong leadership. We took the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, discussed the arts experiences that have shaped us, and expressed our creativity through African drumming, Latin dance, Improv, and drawing. Eric Siegel (’13), Board Chair of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, helped us understand how the Arts and Humanities Council functions and demonstrated the importance of the arts to economic development. Katey Boerner (’07), Executive Director led us on a tour of the park, including the gorgeous Dentzel Carousel, Adventure Theater, the Puppet Company, and other sites in the park. We ended the day by cha-cha-cha-ing, improvising, and drumming in the Bumper Cars Pavilion. It was a glorious, creative and inspiring end to our too-short season of Leadership Montgomery. - Leslie Miles, Founder and Principal, Topside LLC

n October 10, 2014, Leadership Montgomery (LM) launched its newestprogramoffering,EmergingLeaders. This dynamic, professional development programs allows rising young professionals to learn the key issues and players impacting Montgomery County while also honing their professional skills. Over the past 8 months, the cohort of 30 young leaders have participated in monthly sessions focusing on topics including Montgomery County 101, Economic Development and Civic Engagement. They’ve also received professional development training in areas including public speaking, negotiation, conflict resolution, business etiquette, relationship-building, and business ethics.
In addition, this inaugural group of Emerging Leaders has had the opportunity to be matched with professional mentors and to participate in numerous learning enhancements, including lunch with County Executive Ike Leggett and a flyover of the County in a traffic plane. “As a lifelong Montgomery County resident and local small business owner, I am incredibly grateful to this program for providing meaningful and pertinent sessions that opened my eyes to some of the deeper issues and opportunities in our County that I may not have otherwise been exposed to. I can earnestly attest that my classmates and I have grown from the experience, and I am thankful to have been connected to a remarkably strong network of individuals committed to the well-being and improvement of our community”, said Patrick Howard, Chief Operating Officer of Howard Insurance Company. Fostering informed and engaged leaders is critical to Leadership Montgomery’s mission. Participants in LM’s Emerging Leaders program graduate with a deeper understanding of the County and the connections necessary to help strengthen our community. “My experience with Emerging Leaders has been invaluable. Since joining, I have felt more connected to Montgomery County and have become more involved in the community; while also making lifelong friends along the way”, says Tie Smith, program participant and Event Manager at the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes.

outh Leadership Montgomery (YLM) is a two-part program based on a partnership between YLM and Maryland Leadership Workshops (MLW) that provides an experience to develop leadership skills and community awareness for any Montgomery County public or independent high school student entering grades 9-12.
“Each day we spent at MLW came with something new. We learned ways to react when entering new situations. Spending the week with a group of unknown new people taught us great social skills and let me walk away with some true friends that I will never forget.” – Robert Sood. In the fall, the young leaders learn about the role of nonprofit organizations and civic engagement in our society through the example of passionate leaders, as well as hands-on activities. “To see how much effort is put into making sure I get a good education amused me and made me feel more June 2015
This enriching experience results not only in better understanding, more empathy, and a greater sense of community, but also makes participants realize that they can find so many ways to utilize their individual talents and leadership skills in serving the community in which they live. “Our senior class now takes our fresh knowledge, and hopes to continue to contribute to the vitality and desirability of our community— knowing that our Leadership Montgomery contacts can open doors,” pledged Cyril Draffin, who applied for the program because he believes that learning never ends. Outstanding Leader Award Award Sponsor:
Esther B. Newman
By Eliot Pfanstiehl CEO, Strathmore
F
or a woman who, for the last quarter century has been the very face of Leadership Montgomery, the truth was Esther Newman had no idea what she was building when she began. Such is the nature of many bold leaders - they don’t always know the details of where they are going, but they do need to gather passionate people around them who, together, can make it happen. And that is what Esther did best. She was a gatherer of people. Of people who cared.
And while she is often credited with courageously forging a broadbased institution of new community connections, capable of crossing existing political and geographic boundaries, she never quite knew where it would end up. For over 26 years, she has fearlessly entrusted hundreds of people she encountered along the way to mold a new kind of organization which would change the shape of community relations in a county of a million people. Fortunately, Esther could engage people like few others. It was her talent and her gift. It will be her lasting legacy. From her early professional leadership experiences with the Family
Life Center of Montgomery County, Montgomery General Hospital, the YWCA and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, Esther discovered in 1988 that there was a new community leadership program paradigm spreading across the country, magically connecting everyday citizens to collaboratively seek nonpartisan changes at the grass roots level. In 1989, she and the late Larry Pignone of United Way gathered prominent business and civic leaders to launch Leadership Montgomery. After drafting Eliot Pfanstiehl as her facilitator, she constructed the ninemonth curriculum of retreats, speakers and site visits which still characterize the program today. With an initial staff of herself, she built, recruited participants, managed, fundraised and expanded the program using her unique skills as an entrepreneur, but one dedicated to working for community good, instead of for individual wealth. Eventually, she added to the Core program several other programs. Senior Leadership Montgomery, Youth Leadership Montgomery, Inside Montgomery Executive Program and the latest, Emerging Leaders, which now collectively boast over 2,100 graduates. Together, these graduates are credited with hundreds
10 | LEADERSHIP MONTGOMERY 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
of success stories touching almost every nonprofit organization in the County. Due to Esther’s vision and hard work, those graduates went out empowered, connected and supported to succeed at their own individual community work. As she often said, “Leadership Montgomery does not take a stand on issues; rather, we expect our members to think and act for themselves.” But they will think and act more compassionately, globally and efficiently after experiencing the full LM program. She often talked about “her family” of graduates, who are now spread across the County and nation, with the same pride a mother uses to describe the accomplishments of her offspring. And they, in turn, often confided in her on everything from job seeking to resource building to managing their own personal life crises. Esther became a fixed point in their solar systems and a reassuring presence for many. Over the years, Esther raised more than $5M dollars in contributions and scholarships and leveraged another $3M donated in-kind services. She was honored by the Washington Business Journal Women Who Mean Business (2014), Jewish Women International (2011), The Daily Record Top 100 Maryland Women (2010), as well as being honored by The Gazette of Business and Politics, the Corporate
Volunteer Council and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce with their Community Service Award. She even volunteered beyond her workday for causes including Jubilee, the Executive Ball for the Arts, the Women’s Breast Cancer Golf Tournament, and she served as President of the Montgomery College Alumni Board. She was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in 2000 and awarded an Honorary Associate of Arts in Public Service in 2002. The story of Esther Newman is written in the lives of her graduates, her loving family, and her greater community. Those who seek to collaborate more than compete, to celebrate more than criticize, and to connect rather than collide with adversaries, all have Esther to thank for making that a way of life in Montgomery County, Maryland. For a woman who didn’t know if her dream would work, it is now clear, it did. And it will continue far beyond her tenure. For this legacy of leadership, and on behalf of the Board of Directors and entire membership of Leadership Montgomery, Esther Newman is our “Outstanding Leader of the Year for 2015.”

(PHI). Pepco supports a diverse group of organizations and a wide variety of educational, arts,
cultural, environmental, health and business initiatives each year by donating millions of dollars. In 2014, PHI raised almost $850,000 during its annual United Way Campaign and that money further supports services in Montgomery County and surrounding areas. “Pepco exemplifies the community impact that Leadership Montgomery strives to build through its programs to create transformational leaders,” said Hemant V. Virkar (’13), President and CEO of award sponsor Digital Infuzion, Inc. The criteria included visionary thinking, innovation, courage, and integrity.
